  • In this video we talk about how to Kill Crabgrass in Bermuda Grass with Quinclorac. Last year I used Tenacity to kill crabgrass in my fescue and it worked great! However, Tenacity is supposedly not safe for Bermuda Grass. For this reason I had to look for a different product and came across Quinclorac, which is the active ingredient in most post-emergents for Crabgrass. The product I used is a 75% concentrate of Quinclorac that I dissolved in water and mixed with surfactant, which breaks down the water tension on the leaves and allows for greater foliar absorption. I also used Turf Mark to allow me to better see where I applied the product on my lawn.
    Products I used this weekend:
    Quinclorac 75 DF

    Surfactant

    That's the only thing that drives me nuts about spraying bermuda...the slight discoloration. But it's so worth it when the weeds die! Good stuff as always bro!

      Maybe, but the color was back after the second mow. Very temporary. Especially since I mow at a sub-1 inch height of cut and mow every 2-3 days.

    Creative vid! I put dye in my mix for hose end sprayer helps verify it’s siphoning. Doesn’t show up on grass due to dilution with hose end. I still want a backpack sprayer for just reason you demonstrated, it’s easier to see where you sprayed ( with the dye). 👍

      I would recommend getting one that is battery powered. I don't mind pumping, but unless you keep pressure up, it makes for uneven spray.

      The very next video shows some initial results (ua-cam.com/video/ASEPlDkJ_YU/v-deo.html). The nice thing about the Quinclorac is that the damage to the Bermuda is very temporary. A couple mows and it wasn't even noticeable.

    • @TheLawnShark
      @TheLawnShark  4 роки тому

      No, but I will be sure to mention it in one of the videos after I sand level my lawn. It actually did really well with only a few larger plants that remained. I will probably just dig those out, which means I won't need a second application.

      @@TheLawnShark Sweet! I have been using MSMA which is amazing but we just built a house with a well and I don't get a warm & fuzzy feeling about it leeching down. (hence the switching to Quinclorac) I just put down 10 yards of a 60/40 mix (top soil/sand). It did level it to an extent, but I think I need a heavy sand mixture so I can't wait for your video! ( I seeded Princess 77 last year, no sod) Thanks again!

    I didnt get any discoloration on my hybrid bermuda and I actually did a double dose (day 1 we had a unexpected rain so I redid it in the morning)... a week later the crab grass is all dead...and I have a heavy infestation... you should see my backyard just huge brown splotchs and I didn't get everything. I found I did not need to premix anything. I use a Chapin 24v backpack sprayer. .50oz Quinclorac per gallon, 1oz Duo Stick Pro surfactant per gallon, and then I just eyeball the Lazer blue dye. I filled up my sprayer to halfway what I wanted to spray, added all my "ingrediants" then filled the rest up with water... shake vigorously.. I love going out and seeing all the dying crabgrass and I look forward to hitting the rest up.

    • @TheLawnShark

    Do you find the quinclorac settles in the tank if you dont use all of if? Does it clog your nozzle? I use the same stuff for spot spraying crabgrass and since i dont use a full tank it settles and clogs siphon tube.

    • @TheLawnShark
      @TheLawnShark  4 роки тому +4

      I don't leave it in the tank. I try to only make as much as I need. If I have left over, I do my neighbor's yards, especially since the crabgrass is probably coming from them. 😜

    Japanese Stiltgrass.. What is your experience with Japanese Stiltgrass. My lawn (manly the front lawn is infested with Japanese stilt grass. I have recently applied to applications of Tenacity but the Tenacity is having very little effect on the stilt grass. (my lawn is KBG with a recent overseeing of Perennial Ryegrass)

      I have no experience with Japanese Stiltgrass, but after a quick search, it looks like Sedgehammer+ works on it. I have used Sedgehammer on Nutsedge and it worked great. Would be worth a try. The beginning of this video was hilarious. Lmaoo I’m dealing with crabgrass and it’s bad. It took over most of my backyard. I have cool season grass and wanted to do tenacity so that I could Overseed. People are recommending Quinclorac because it’s more effective. I’m probably just gonna nuke my backyard with it and reseed it all anyway. But do I then apply tenacity during the reseed so that I don’t get new weeds???

    • @TheLawnShark
      @TheLawnShark  3 роки тому

      That is what I would do. Tenacity is a great pre and post emergent. It will help to control weed emergence while your grass seed germinates. Glad you enjoyed the beginning!

  • @drakew3355
    @drakew3355 Рік тому +1

    Do you need to shake the ingredients in a sprayer tank? I know the pump sprayers use pressure forced into the bottom (then upwards) to mix inputs. Wasn’t sure if the battery powered worked the same.

    Can I do this very same application just before overseeding with bermuda grass seed? If not, how long would you recommend for me to wait before overseeding?

    • @TheLawnShark
      @TheLawnShark  2 роки тому +2

      I would never over-seed Bermuda unless you are sure you have the same cultivar because there are too many variation in Bermuda cultivars. I would deal with the weeds and then make sure you have the proper nutrients for the Bermuda to grow and spread. Bermuda is such a fast grower that you should be in good shape within a season. If you have huge gaps, then I would try to find out your particular type of cultivar and re-sod the areas with the same. If you try to seed, and it's not the same, it will be obvious and it will look patchy if you are not careful. Also, Bermuda seed is incredibly slow to germinate. Allowing it to spread and/or sod is a better option in my book. Hope this helps.

    • @TheLawnShark

      You'll need to check the label to make sure, but I believe it is not safe for St. Augustine. St Augustine is very sensitive to many herbicides. Always check the label carefully.
