How To Kill Clover For Good Completely

- There are many different ways to attack clover in a lawn but few ways to kill clover for good from a lawn with a single application.
In this video, I apply two hand-selected herbicides mixed together with a surfactant to kill clover once and for all. This works if you have burr clover like me, white clover, red clover, or any other obscure form of clover in your own lawn.

I use 20cc and 30cc syringes to accurately measure small quantities of herbicides. It’s much easier and more accurate than pouring from a cup. One ounce is roughly 30 cc.
Appreciate the video. I have customers who lawns are full of weeds.
Love the video as always
What's your advice for getting rid of daisies?
Clover drove me nuts for years. Now i fight it in my neighbors lawn. Great content. I love the channel ☘
What does that even mean
@@Peter-cx4irso it doesn’t spread into his yard
Oh wow! I didn't know Dr. House did lawn care also.
it could be lupus...but ultimately, it won't be 😉
I've never had a problem killing my white clover with 2,4-D.
Wow Brian your timing is perfect like ur in my head. I have fine fescue. My neighbor has clover in his bermuda, what should he use?
Appreciate the video. Get a lot of clover in my back lawn during the Fall months, so I will definitely be referencing this again in a few months. Right now I'm dealing with a foxtail infestation in my primarily TTTF lawn. Would mesotrione knock it out or do you have any other suggestions?
Could you please give advice on how to determine mix rates when spot spraying weeds in planters and tree wells, and spraying crack weeds. I get confused when the mix is per area and not per gallon. I’m not spraying turf and can’t use roundup.
Ah, okay. It's the 60% Triclopyr we used to clear brush around grandpas farm. That's why such a 'small' amount. If I remember right, big-box brush clear formulations are something like 8%; likely because they don't want people to kill their trees.
This is awesome information....my lawn is glory ...but all my neighbors could use this... question...we have many neighborhood cats ....is there another method by any chance ?
fun comment response, that made me smile. As for the question the safest thing to do is use FeHEDTA, it's a special liquid chelated iron product that many organic lawn care people use. I use it for a lot of things too. It's different than iron fertilizers and doesn't affect the grass, just dicot plants like most weeds. It's nowhere near as effective at killing off mature clover but it can kill off young clover just like the stuff I had in this video next to my driveway. I have a video on it here ua-cam.com/video/9tkSxGEuLdU/v-deo.html
I use Ortho weedclear with great success
Hi Brian, is this more effective than Tenacity? I've seen it mentined on quite a few other youtube vids. Or does that depend on the type of grass you have?
I believe the weed you are speaking of is called purslane. Apparently it’s edible (gag)
you might be right on that. It's so far from my front door that I haven't given it much thought but since I'm preparing to seed a new section along that parkway strip I'll have to start fully identifying what's there and getting it all cleaned up. Also, I've heard of purslane being one of the most nutritious plants possible...but still gross. LOL
Get some Speedzone and be done with it in 2 days at the most
It's one thing to let grass grow tall when treating with weed killers but at least keep the sidewalk clear of overgrowth. We have our own 10rentals & 2 personal houses I maintain myself yet I've never allowed overgrowth to impede public access to sidewalks.
Good job on clover
Yep, I let that go way too far just for the sake of this experiment. I won't do that again.
Why kill clover?
Most people don't like clovers in their nice green yard full of grass.
Question.....will prodiamine stop clover from emerging after winter?
I use prodiamine to prevent crab grass. It does absolutely nothing to clover.
Are you interested / in fear, of the damage to soil micro environment ?? ( i am very very interested, ty )
I am actually concerned about that quite a bit. In my last house I used almost zero chemicals at all and this house I plan on switching back to a nearly 100% organic lawn again. Last year after we moved into this house I committed to transforming this lawn incrementally using chems and cultural practices to demonstrate to regular lawn owners how it can be done even in a place with a ton of invasive weeds and grasses, but in the long term I am itching to getting back to where my heart is. Keeping the soil and biology in the lawn healthy.
I sprayed creeping charlie in my lawn with T-Zone and it's dying but there's still a matrix of vines and roots everywhere choking out the grass. Should I pull them by hand or is there an easier way?
Might have hit it twice. Tough but not impossible. Took me twice in the fall for 2 consecutive years and it went away for a year. Then came back next year but very minimal. 1 more that fall and it hasn't been back.
Don’t pull creeping Charlie. Unless you pull out all the roots, which is virtually impossible, it will keep coming back. A few rounds of t-zone will really do the trick.
Use a dethatching rake
So does video mean FEHEDTA isn't a great long-term clover root killer? I saw your videos on iron but didn't try it myself.
It's not a great long term killer unless you keep at it for a long while kinda like general maintenance. It will kill off newly sprouted clover when it's super young so over the long haul it will make a serious dent in the problem...it can also be applied at much cooler temperatures so your "season" for attacking the clover is much longer with FEHEDTA. Many people don't want to deal with it though so this video was to present the harshest quickest treatment...and even this one might even need a second application for the thickest patches because it's just hard to get great leaf coverage on layered clover hiding under the grass.
@@TurfMechanic have you experimented with adding surfactant or other uptake things like ammonium sulfate to FEHEDTA? I'm not sure if it would enhance the effect or just make it destroy the grass
That little one with the yellow flower looks more like oxalis, which is also tough to get.
There's a bit of oxalis in there but burr clover looks a lot like it when it is very young. As you watch burr clover grow up the scratchy burrs start forming and the leaf shape adjusts a bit. In very young sprout stage though they look extremely similar.
@@TurfMechanic that’s cool. I’m in NY, it’s entirely possible we don’t have it. I just know a lot of people get pissed of when their clover killer doesn’t kill it…. Because it’s not clover haha.
Id hate to be your neighbor with that patch of clover
You'd be surprised, I don't care at all what's on the neighbors side of the line. Just adds more interest to my own yard...and fun projects too. 😀
I think you should have trimmed the clover half this height...to reach more into the lower parts.
I ended up ultimately trimming back the top layer (I let it get way to overgrown for this test) a few days after spraying and then eventually had to hit the lower canopy on a second pass. You are right, with it being so overgrown there was just so much clover undergrowth that was protected that it just never got sprayed.
18:48 That looks like Perslaine. I would not weed whack that.
I see the pattern.
Next video: How to kill the grass, but not the weed
It is not a joke. I turned part of my lawn to wildflower garden. But it looks like I failed to kill the grass, and it is creeping back, suppressing many smaller flowers. I don’t want to restart it from scratch, just to kill the grass.
Do you know what type of grass is coming back? That's a tough one without knowing what grass type you need to get rid of and what desirable garden plants you have growing. In my back garden area I'm hand pulling a lot of grass in stead of using herbicides. For bunch type grasses that might be your least offensive option although quite labor intensive.
Mono-culture lawns are boring and are like deserts for pollinators.
You should use an N95 mask not a surgical mask. N95s protect the wearer, surgical protects others from the wearer. In other words, N95s filter when you inhale, surgical filters when you exhale.
Just hire a company
Why on earth do you want to get rid of clover? xD
Bc It’s a weed
It’s a hideous invasive weed? Absolute weirdo
I need my grass to be grass... not clover. That's why. Completely ruins the look of a nice lawn
Ugly and provides great coverage for insects and ticks.
I love clover, either by itself or mixed in with grass. Some people are OCD with lawn uniformity. But I love a mix of grass, clover, and dandelions. With a little fertilizer it looks nice. Often the reason some lawns with dandelions and clover look shabby is because the owners don’t ever fertilize.
4-leaf clovers bring good luck, by getting rid of them you bring bad luck. Leave a patch of clover and you will thank me later
Love your videos, but man you gotta spend less time talking about meaningless stuff. These videos are just too long.
sorry, but you can always watch on faster speed and I'm starting to publish shorter versions of all my videos on the Turf Mechanic Briefs channel. Keep that in mind while browsing. Will take me some time to get caught up over there on the shortened versions.
I bought the store bought Spectracide. It didn't do much for oxalis, but it sure killed the St Augustine in my Zoysia 😊
My neighbor told me to use dawn dish soap salt and water. Just got done spraying it down right now. Slap me if I’m wrong.
Tryclopyr 4 is way underated. I used it to clear brush undergrowth and then on the lawn. It is my go to herbicide. It is deadly on thistle. I live in NW Indiana.
Thanks for your informative video.
I'm sure I missed it, but how long will you wait after spraying will you attempt to reseed the area?
