- Classic Pokemon Vs Modern Pokemon. Which is Better, and why? Pokemon has changed and evolved over the years ever since the release of Red and Blue, and now that we have Sword and Shield as well as the Crown Tundra DLC, a lot has changed. Some fans prefer the earlier games like Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, while others prefer newer games like Pokemon Sun and Moon. Today we will be going through each generation, as well as all the remake/"third" versions, to discuss what each generation added and how they fit in the modern era of Pokemon or in the classic era of Pokemon

I was 3 years old when I played Fire Red on my GameBoy Advanced SP back in 2009 I was so close to beating it I needed HM strength I owe my brother most of the credit because he taught me how to play it. Bulbasaur was my first starter and my favourite and still is till this day.

@Ferniand Von Edgelord I was born In The 90s I played every game and I can say with confidence the sinnoh and unova are complete shit games. Gen 3 was great. Then gen 6 was okay however gen 7 made it irrelevant.

Gen V allowing us to reuse TMs was the best thing ever.
But the thing that made TMs fun and interesting was the strategy involved in only being able to use them once, so you had to really make them count. I absolutely hate reusable TMs.
@@nintendonut100 The strategy here (with reusable TMs) is in having as much flexibility to your pokémon's movesets as possible.
I'd say it introduces more strategy(ies), incentivizing you to try more things even.

Pokemon White was the first Pokémon game I ever actually owned and finished despite having played gens 3 and 4. I beat the game with literally 1 HP left on my sole surviving Emboar. I will always remember and love that game and I’m glad to have started with it. I honestly really enjoy Sword personally but man the series has gone so far downhill. The 3D thing’s gotta go or they’ve gotta do more to make the worlds feel real

The thing with Team Yell is that they aren’t really an evil team, but an obstacle to try and stop trainers from completing their gym challenge so that Marnie has an easier time becoming champion. Considering they show instances of actually caring about Pokémon, unlike some other evil teams, kind of show that they aren’t really an evil team.
I actually prefer Team Yell over some weird “evil” team with extreme and obscure ambitions lmao
@@miyane994 I originally hated team yell when they were first announced, but after playing through the game I began to appreciate what they brought to the story/game. And they also made for more realistic road blocks.
They dont even have a team Boss. You might think Piers, but he implied he had no idea his gym trainers where even doing the Yell thing. Just that he must suck so bad that that's why no one has come to battle him for the challenge. And Marnie is off doing her thing, telling them to stop doing the Yell thing because its a bother to her.
They are not villains, just over exaggerated fans who love snakes taking naps and turtles being turtles on the beach.
@@namegoeshere5220 and that’s what I love about them, they actually subverted my expectations in a good way. Hell they even help you out when your trying to get to Leon and Chairman Rose.

I’m weird. I prefer the style of the old game’s story and the ability to go anywhere without being stopped by cutscenes. But I love some of the new Pokémon and the player Customization.
Worst Thing About: Modern Pokémon Games, No Enhanced Version Except For Gen 7.

BW and B2/W2 are the pinnacle of pokemon. Both in Story and everything else. The decision to only allow regional Pokemon for the story content was amazing (i was always defaulting to certain pokemon in gen 1-4 and 6-8).
I completely agree with you. It's a shame the pokemon fanbase is plagued by so many genwunners who would complain if something like that was implemented again cause "I wAnT tO UsE mY fAvOuRItE pOkéMoNs iN ThE sToRy!1!!1"
Gen BW are ethe only games besides RBGY to only have regional pokemon before the E4. Also BW is the only game where you don't fight the "Champion" to beat the game on your first playthrough. But I'm sure you already know that 😊
BW/BW2 are amazing games but for me the best is HGSS yes it has its flaws but my nostalgia for that game is to much

Special Z moves should be but general Z moves (specifically status Z moves) should be available all over. Status Z moves were AMAZING. It really gave life too SEVERAL under used pokemon. Musharna was terrifying to see on the opponents side of the field.

According to the best nuzlocker in the world (pokemon challenges) in order to do a hardcore nuzlocke you need to be really knowledgeable about pokemon, and I know for a fact that if anyone calls gen 5 easy for quality of life reasons, imma bonk them. Gen 5 is a fun challenge.

Something controversial yet brave: Team Yell is a self aware meme. The last evil teams felt like a joke but they were treated as “serious threats”.

And GF being lazy as usual, they reuse everything from animation etc. I actually enjoy swsh, but this game clearly shows that gf clearly dont give a fck about mainline games anymore and gave more focus on their merch and mobile games.

The last good teams were Flare in X & Y and Magma and Aqua in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire remakes.
Gen 5 had the best narrative out of any gen by far, nothing comes even close. Not to mention the character development of N, he’s the the best character in this entire series tbh
Overrated
N is kinda overrated though. But Unova as a whole is really greatly made region. So much reliance within it, that's what make it stand-out comparated to the other regions.

I would say it has the best narrative of a Pokémon game but that’s not impressive. When you look at it from a critical perspective you’ll see how BW2 story is pretty standard and not great, but BW had a much stronger narrative.
But the narrative focus caused it to be incredibly linear with the worst map design ever. Personally I am playing Pokémon for exploration, tough battles and bonding with my Pokémon. Gen V was incredibly linear, and much easier than the previous gens. Not saying they are cakewalk but looking from Cynthia to Iris it is a downgrade.
Side note: iris is one of the worst champions. She literally does less in BW2 than BW and it sucks. Her team is half weak to ice and half weak to fighting. Idk why I expect more from gamefreak but I do.
The route design was good but kinda felt like it lacked its own identity with its routes. Like most of the routes were rehashes, but it had some places I like. Examples being the dream yard, cold storage, and chargestone cave. I enjoyed some ideas like, the seasons, musicals and PWT but they kinda fall flat. It’s annoying when you can’t get an item for a few months because it’s the wrong season, and even worse when it’s a Pokémon. The aesthetics are nice but the execution was annoying. Musicals are fun for a one time try but lack depth compared to contests. PWT was fine but the battle frontier had SO MUCH more variety and depth. I did like seeing all the past characters back though.
With that all being said BW2And BW are my my second and 3rd favorite games. I just love them so much but they have ALOT ALOT of flaws
Gen 7 also had a pretty great narrative and is considered more character focused. People also mostly say bw2's plot is worse then 1's.
To me, Mega Evolutions didn't feel like some cheap gimmick. They felt like a natural evolution of the Pokémon formula.
Pokémon X and Y are my favorite Pokémon games and I really wish that we could've got Pokémon Z to hopefully fix some of Gen 6's difficulty problems.
Totally agree. I think people didn't start seeing it as a gimmick until they were largely pushed to the side during gen 7 for z moves, and completely abandoned in gen 8 for dynamaxing. It would have been better to just keep mega evolution as the main new mechanic and not introduce the other two imo.
You two are spitting straight facts. To me, Game Freak's biggest illusion was introducing new Mega Evolution in ORAS: that feature made me think that the introduction of new megas had become a staple of every new game.
You look at Mega Audino and tell me that it's in pain.
Jokes aside I don't know if we can necessarily believe the Poké Dex entries for Mega Pokémon. Some of them are written as if the Mega Pokémon stays in that form and lives. One of Mega Metagross's entries says it's made of the Metagoss + 1 Metang + 2 Beldum. Some of Mega Pinsir's entries state that it's actually very excited due to having wings.

@Kouta Tsuchiya Why should that matter if it doesn't effect gameplay whatsoever? It's just flavor text. You can make the same arguments about almost every Dex entry on Ghost Types being literally evil and harmful to humans, but again it's all flavor text and changes absolutely nothing about gameplay and how you interact with the pokemon.

-The version exclusive gym leaders don't have the exact same team.
-The map is WAY bigger.

Something that i really enjoy from the modern games is how much they thrive in their respective world themes - like alola for instance, it completely feels like you’re part of a tropical hawaiian adventure. Before gen 5, i feel like it was sort of difficult to achieve that great world theme with the limited hardware
Sinnoh has the same thing going for it imo, but alola is definitely the culmination of that design theory.
I only ever played gen 1 and gen 3 prior to sun and moon coming out. Played them a little and hated them, then when they announced sword and shield I got all the old games on eBay for my DS and have played through them up to x and y. Gen 5 was definitely the first time it felt like you were immersed in the Pokémon world and it’s my favorite so far!
The problem with Alola for me was how empty it felt despite being based off of Hawaii
The exploration elements were completely neutered and the areas weren’t that extensive

Okay, while Gen 5 wasn’t as hard as say Platinum or Emerald, I think the examples you cited were ways the games were less tedious rather than less difficult. The battles themselves didn’t become easier till X&Y in my opinion
Man, HGSS have a great problem, is the great curve of level in this game and his dex
I don’t really think it’s a problem of HGSS but more of remakes in general. Remakes keep pretty much the same teams and levels for the characters with barely of a change to the move sets. All the remakes would’ve been better if they changed the teams of the characters mainly the gym leaders and elite four along with adding more different generation Pokémon in the wild

@@Gamefileplays Fair enough, I think BW2 is in the top 3 with Emerald and Platinum, but BW is a bit easier.
Platinum is hands down the hardest game in the series. Especially if you Nuzlocke it, Cynthia's Garchomp alone can destroy pretty much everything. Pretty much all games other than Platinum, Emerald and B2W2 can be hardcore nuzlocked (no items in battle, level cap) by just throwing random mons in your team but those 4 games actually require a strategy to beat some bosses.
One reason classic pokemon is better is that you did not have to pay for a post game and more pokemon
With the Sword and Shield DLC you're paying for extra content as the game already has a post game, and the added back Pokémon can be transferred over without the DLC
Assuming we're talking about when gen 4 first released, assuming you brought Diamond/Pearl and THEN came out, providing most of the game's main postgame in the form of the battle frontier, you would've had to spend twice as much money as you would've than if Platinum was the only Sinnoh game and that was the one you bought. Also, i'm pretty sure pre-nat dex D/P only had a dex of exactly 150 pokemon. 150! To put that into perspective, Ruby/Sapphire had a dex of 192 without legends. The gen 3 games came out in late 2002, whereas D/P were released near 4 years late, WITH DELAYS. The D/P dex was so small, the ONLY non-starter fire type line was Ponyta. I'm no expert on the eyesight of the devs, but if i was a play tester for those games, i probably would have noticed that, ESPECIALLY with an E4 member that uses STEELIX, DRIFBLIM, and LOPUNNY. SwSh started off with a base dex of about 400, which was already pretty good. Then with the expansion pass came an update to give EVERYBODY the ability to trade between games with all mons, new or returning. Last i checked, they NEVER added the new Platinum forms to D/P, so if you wanted those new forms TOO BAD. Bascially wht i'm trying to get at here is that you're lying about paying for postgame or a bigger dex. Is SwSh the biggest post game ever? No, far from it. But how about you think about if D/P was released today and THEN a Platinum came out? Would people be mad or what? And no, don't give me the excuse of it's a different time because DP were delayed yet STILL are some of the most flawed games in the series. If anything, DLC is just a more modern way of doing things compared to third versions. There's even a great 3rd version VS DLC vid by JPRpoketrainer here: ua-cam.com/video/DWgfaX5zc00/v-deo.html. Sorry if i'm having a bit of a temper tantrum, i've just seen too many "harhar new pokemon bad" jokes for a lifetime, and now anything is prone to set me off.

Follow pokemon, apricorns, multi battles (star tournament), post game content, discovering other mythical pokemon (kubfu and calyrex). Hg ss had JUST as much as content as both the dlc and base game for swsh. Not giving a billion dollar franchise excuses. That would be like making excuses for EA. Swsh has its merits but some things are plain as day.

Gen 5 was overhated during its time. It was an era where people got less into Pokemon after the years of constant releases. A lot of people missed out on BW (B2W2 especially). I'm just now rediscovering Gen 5 and its honestly amazing. It combines gameplay with story and its incredibly fun. The mechanics and graphics are better and much more fleshed out than Gen 4. Gen 5 was the peak of Gamefreak's effort to make the ultimate Pokemon games. Things started to go downwards after...

I’ve always been on the fence about Gen 5 remakes because Gen 5 is honestly still a solid game graphics wise today, but a BW 3, that sounds way better. We’d be able to explore Unova possibly with a bit of a different layout, a different story, and most likely different gym leaders
@@lloydirving6209 not attacking you here, but how do they ruin Ruby and Sapphire with ORAS? I would consider ORAS to not only be one of the best Pokémon games but also one of the best games in general.
@@Whale-Shark-Katie added lots of unnecessary handholding and railroading to the originals, shoehorned in megas, changed the plot and characters considerably, neutered some areas (changed granite cave from a multilevel dungeon to a straight hallway), etc. And in general I think the 2D games do not translate well at all to 3D, or at least game freak didn't know how to do it well imo. The original map was grid based because it was a 2D game (obviously), but the grid based maps of old pokemon games do not translate well at all to 3D, it just looks really strange. ORAS also have load screens between routes and towns (not in the original games) which makes it go from a seamless world to a more fragmented feeling, which I didn't like; it made everything feel smaller. I'm not a fan of gen 7 games really but at least the map feels like a 3D world for the most part, ORAS does not. I also strongly dislike the whole chibi aesthetic they did in gen 6, which again was fixed in gen 7. And they left out the battle frontier which was one of the best parts of gen 3. The delta episode was pretty cool though.

One thing I love about Gen 6 and up was making 5IV pokemon doable without hacking, nature changing, adding egg moves etc. The training changes were a great idea and it still took a lot of effort to get competitive pokemon.
It let you use the pokemon you took through the story for competitive battling which reenhanced the bond you had with them. I lost my bond with many pokemon in previous gens because they sucked when I went online.
I dont really know. ORAS and Emerald are tied for best game for me. Although i do know one thing. The best ride pokemon was the eon flute, and no one can change my mind.

One thing i noticed in the Alola and Galar games is that the evil teams are less of a presence but have a secret "pulling the strings" villain that's introduced as nice but becomes a twist villain at the end. Alola having the Aether Foundation and Galar having Macro Cosmos. I hope this trend doesn't continue.
Yeah I noticed that when first playing through Galar. I really liked it being in gen 7 because Pokémon had generally never done something like it before and I think Team Skull is a really good group of characters, but it doesn’t really work in gen 8, Team Yell are just a watered down Team Skull. Another reason I feel it doesn’t work in gen 8 is because it feels like GameFreak is trying to get the player to take Team Yell seriously, while in the Alola games Team Skull is clearly meant to be just a group of goofballs, and they succeed at doing that. I still love SW/SH, but this is definitely one of its glaring issues

@@Mqstodon fair point. What I should’ve said is that Team Yell isn’t handled well. I say that Team Yell is taken seriously in SW/SH because they aren’t on the level of Team Skull. What I mean by this is that Team Yell is probably as much taken seriously as Team Skull, maybe even less, but they don’t have that overly “we’re the bad guys!” thing that Team skull had. Team Skull tried to be evil, it’s pretty clear in SM/USUM, but failed in that, which made them funny and likeable in my opinion, but Team Yell, they don’t even try to do that, they’re just “YEAH GO MARNIE” and that’s it. Sure, they can be nuisances with blocking paths, but that’s about it. What I’m trying to say is, Team Yell is trying to imitate Team Skull and failing. Like I said before, I still love SW/SH, but this is one glaring issue
Something I don't like about the modern games is how focused they seem on spectacle. Z-moves are just really big attacks, dynamaxing is just turning your pokemon really big. Mega evolution is fine though, and I feel like that's going to be the next "we want pokemon to follow us again."

I feel as if I can give a good opinion on this topic, since I have been playing Pokemon since Gen 1.
I think that "classic Pokemon" has the better map/level design and re-playability, but "modern Pokemon" has the better mechanics and stories. The Gen 5 games blend these two concepts together well, and seem to "bridge the gap" between the two eras of Pokemon.
Gens 1-4 = Classic
Gen 5 = Mixture
Gens 6-8 = Modern
HG/SS is really good, you can get 18 badges in Kanto and Johto

I really wish they didn’t feel like they have to have an evil team. Team Yell is absolutely useless and adds nothing to the story. I wish they would’ve just left them out entirely. Team Skull was also a pretty stupid evil team to me

Definitely agree. While I disagree about Team Skull because I think they're great, they definitely shouldn't feel like evil teams are a requirement every generation. I've even come up with an idea for a Pokemon game and told I need an evil team because there has to be one.
I think one good comprimise is, using Sword as an example, removing that part with the Chairman right before the Champion battle and letting you play through the league uninterrupted. Then have those evil plans be in the post game kind of like Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's post game
BW and B2W2 weren't that easy. Not to an 11 y/o. I've seen adults get bodied in BW. X&Y are the real games where difficulty dropped.

Before I played B2W2 I have only played XY, ORAS, and Lets Go, so when I went into the first gym in that game I got destroyed and it was shocking to me. But then after that I was able to get through the rest of the game somewhat easily
and also after playing that game I can definitely say it was easily my favorite pokemon game I've played, followed up by ORAS, then let's go, and then XY
I’m able to skip the text faster in the older games. And I have running shoes in gen 3,4,5. So those are the gens I replay the most. Gens 6,7,8 take WAY too long to get through the text, in my opinion it hinders gameplay because the games are extremely linear and my journey gets interrupted every 5 steps. It gets annoying.

I actually liked Generation 7 a lot but agree the handholding is annoying. I still found them far more enjoyable than XY though. Or Sword and Shield.
I fell in love with it simply because out of nowhere one of my pokemon did this thing where they toughed out a hit on 1 hp and it said it did it to not make me sad (this is why typhlosion is now my fave pokemon)

Im glad that someone liked anything pokemon but if you're a longtime fan gen 7 is unplayably boring the whole game feels like a tutorial with hand holding basically never stopping, you never get any kind of choice where to go . I mean if you like listening to bad boring generic story telling and having your hand held for the entire game than this is the game for you. At least it still had megas and all pokemon in it.
Personally, couldn’t handle the cutscenes to make it through the game. I loved the concept and I’ve heard ultra sun and moon are better but I’ve never spent the money to try them out.
Here’s my 2 cents: everyone values the games differently, some people like the region and world, in which Sinnoh, Kalos, and Galar are all very hard to argue against. Some people like the story, in which Kanto, Hoenn, and Unova are very hard to dethrone. If you like gameplay and technical feel, then you’d probably prefer the end of each generation (Crystal or BW2 for example).
In my opinion, Gen 6 7 and 8 receive the most hate just because they are new and are part of the “gimmick” era. But all Pokemon games have upsides and downsides. It’s very hard to get a new region right with the first games, and I think all of these gens did very well. I mean look at the mountain of problems D/P had. In a sense of how much GameFreak “cheaped out”, D/P are actually almost as bad as SwSh. And they had a third whole game in Platinum rather than DLC. Which is why I would love D/P/P remakes. Most people end up tending to favour the generations they grew up with, and completely trash every other generation, and say “oh well I played it but it was garbage”. If you go into something expecting to hate it, you’d probably rather satisfy your expectations than betray them.

2. Gen 2
3. Gen 8
4. Gen 5
5. Gen 3
6. Gen 1 (tied with D/P)
It seems like Johto is my favourite region based off these ratings, but my fav region is Hoenn. Also I have SwSh ranked so high because they’re so modern (co-op modes, post game Star Tournament) and have so many QoL features (Hyper training, Ability Patches, EV brute forcing/resetting), it seems like Gen 8 sets you up for competitive battling. IK some people hate this, but that’s up to preference. I know some people also hate the shiny charm and Masuda, and prefer full-odds. If you’re more into purely main-story, then I can see why SwSh is not your cup of tea (lol).
My favourite game was BW2 (the hidden abilities, fusion, moving sprites, I’m very biased for these games. I’ll even defend Garbrador and Vanillite), while I think the best games were HGSS (Crystal to me is a very close second). My first game was Fire Red (went back and played the past gens around when Gen 5 was announced). I can’t rank Gen6 cause I’ve never played it, but the region looks amazing. I also choose not to rank Gen 7 since they purposely strayed from the formula.
Also I think in terms of story, Leon saying “hey I’m an adult let me handle this” is actually fine, and it’s not as bad as Cynthia seeing Cyrus trying to end the world because he’s depressed, and standing by, just to let a 10 year old kid save the region.
Kanto did not have a good story. Period. That's my only disagreement.

The issue with Leon is that it's just a lazy way for events to happen off screen without the player being involved at all. Cynthia at least tries to do research and figure stuff out which can be important to the matter at hand.
I enjoy the Pokemon roms made by fans with the look of classic GBA (Emerald) but with the new moves and fairy type from Gen7

I'm so glad to see more and more people appreciating Gen 5. White 2 was my first Pokemon game and even with nostalgia aside, I think B2W2 are objectively two of the best mainline games alongside HGSS.
Well, I'd say the same, but I don't play johto enough to care too much about it. My personal second place is probably y because I loved it when I first got it, the music is really nice too. Best spinoff game is probably pokemon ranger, shadow of almia hands down.

The sountracks from Gen 3 are phenomenal.
I think the other reason the evil team stories were better prior to Gen 5 is because you weren't really the "hero" tasked with dealing with them, you were just some dude trying to do the gyms and catch em all and it happens that some evil doers are in your road. Starting Gen 5 it had this more personal goal to defeat evil with N popping up everywhere in B/W, and then your rival wanting Purrloin back from Plasma in BW2
IMO the thing that separates "modern" and "classic" is the emphasis the pokemon company has made in the competitive aspect.
In gen 6 they made hidden abilities more accessible, breeding became easier and the entire pokedex was obtainable in a single gen.
In gen 7 you really didn't need to breed anymore, they made all pokemon usable thanks to bottle caps.
In gen 8 you can do to your pokemon what I compare to plastic surgery, literally every aspect of the pokemon other than the species and gender can be modified.
Modern is about making VGC more accessible and attractive to the casual player.
You know, I agree with that and that makes me wonder. What if the next games went even further on that aspect. Introduce Double Battles and VGC ruleset into the main story. Gen 8 did this somewhat with the last gym leader, but I think they could double down on it. It would allow Game Freak to do things that aren't possible with only single battles and have more challenges that way. Idk food for thought I guess.
The problem is that while they make competitive teambuilding easier, they don't give us any way to use it in-game outside of Battle [building] knockoffs. Where did the Battle Frontier go? Or the World Tournament from B2W2? (ok i know there's Galarian Star Tournament, but I don't know much about it)

As someone who has never even thought about competitive pokemon I don't see this. I like gens 2-4, think everything post 4 is bad. With each getting worse. I couldn't finish SM or SS.

Recently I bought all DS games and I can't stand them anymore, as much as I liked them gens 1-5 feel so slow and I'm not invested in any pokemon I didn't breed since all wild pokemon seem worthless, I can't bring myself to finish them, feels like a waste of time.

As a long time Pokemon player, and still a fan. I find merit in all Pokemon games. My first Pokemon game was Red and although I love these games, however I will happily admit these games have flaws and that further installations improve greatly on the core that was started with Gen 1. With that said I will happily say that Gen 3, 5 and 8 are by far my favorite generations and it is because of the interactions I had with friends during these gems and how Ruby and Sapphire were the first Pokemon games I bought with my own money. With all that said I have a tendency to remember Classic Pokemon games the most fondly, but I still do like the modern pokemon games. I loved seeing this video and thanks for it!

I'm convinced there must be some connection with experiencing things as a kid or nostalgia in general having an effect on memory. I swear I've played through gens 4 and 6 more times than 3, but I could definitely draw a map of Hoenn and list all of the town names no problem. I could hardly name any towns from sinnoh or kalos, and most certainly could not draw a map of them from memory, despite playing them more recently.

I honestly never cared. If a Pokémon game can make me feel satisfied and absorbed in its lore and themes, then it succeeds as a great game in my eyes. Essentially, I love all the games, some more than others, but for menial reasons.

Refresh ruined the games difficulty. Once you get access to Rainbow beans, you get the Nuke Button and the only hard part could be the Totem Ribombee but it’s still really easy.

I agree. Difficultylevels did not change much in gen5, but that is because it was the first attempt. I am sure they could have had a pretty good hardmode in the newer games if they kept the mechanic.
I prefer classic Pokémon but I did really enjoy gen 6 as well. Effectively Gens 3-6 are peak enjoyment for me
I personally prefer the story structure generations 5 and 7 took with black and white(2) being my favourite games, sun and moon second and diamond, pearl and platinum third.
The removal of HMs, introduction of reusable tms etc are honestly just some awesome quality of life changes in my opinion. As for difficulty...I honestly didnt mind the difficulty outside of gen 6 and 8 and strangely enough I thought it was fine in gen 7, particularly with totem pokemon and ultra necrozma. Other than that, good video, keep up the good work ^^

I really like x/y’s chibi style and visual consistency. It really felt like it was going to be the start of something special. I don’t think it ever got there sadly. I think the DS games are the pinnacle but I might always find gen 1 the most replayable.
I personnally think no generation is better than gen 4, but gen 3 comes close.
Gen 3 had the best performance and feeling, Gen 4 had the best additions and story

Their both equally great, some of the best original titles in ruby,sapphire,pearl,diamond,emerald and platinum. Then you have remakes that make the originals look like a joke in soul silver,heart gold, fire red, and leaf green

I like the story of gen 8, just because the adults try and handle things. Like problems are happening and Leon is just like "Hey, don't worry. Just focus on your pokemon challenge. Let me, an adult, handle this.
Kind of like how in BW, at the end the adults actually come and help you (all the gym leaders) and I like it when the adults actually play an important role in the game.

As i'm an old school pokémon player, growing up with the first gens does make me favor them more. That being said, I don't really enjoy all the pandering the current gens do to the first gen. There are tons of interesting pokémon in subsequent gens, but they keep pandering on the same Kanto pokémon that at this point, just isn't very interesting.
I didn't really enjoy SwSh, too much hand holding. I hope the Diamond/Pearl remakes aren't bad, since I want to like pokémon again.

@@averytubestudios at first the pandering was ok. "Oh the starters on X/Y, that's pretty neat let me get a Charmander again.". Then Kantonian forms on S/M, then Charizard with tons of focus on Sw/Sh. Other Gens deserve pandering as well. We have some on the Megas, but I'm sure they could do more.
And I'm more of a old games fan, not specifically Gen I. I do prefer Gen II due to being a much longer game than Gen I.
I honestly think SW/SH really improved in terms of handholding, sure, they still have issues, but stuff like making tutorials optional is a really big step. The fact that I’m saying that having tutorials be optional is a big step shows how handholdy the past games are, I still love em though

But that’s not what I meant by handholding, what I meant is all of the tutorials that are usually in Pokémon, the main issues with games like Sun and Moon, where other characters are constantly telling you where to go or how to do something, with SW/SH however, they make those tutorials completely optional and they don’t guide you as much to different areas

Sun and Moon are my second favorite Pokemon game, I find that a lot of people love generation 5s story, I personally don't get it, I find the story in Sun and Moon way better and especially the character design way better than generation 5. Maybe better is not the right word, I simply find SuMo more endearing and fun, gen 5 takes itself too serious in a world that is so "unserious", people questioning the ethics of Pokemon when there are literal 10 year old kids being sent out into the world to become "Pokemon Masters" when these monsters are apparently supposed to be pretty dangerous is all very baffling to me and I just don't get why it gets praised that much. I do have to say Black and White and its sequels were still incredibly good games, there is so much content in those games its unbelievable
My hat goes to gen 2 games, both original and remakes, and not because of the fact that gen 2 has Kanto in it as a post game no not at all, but simply because I absolutely adore Johto as a region and gen 2 Pokemon designs were incredibly appealing and in the ranks of some of the best designs ever, like Scizor, Steelix, Heracross, Crobat, Sneasel, Lugia etc, gen 2 was the perfect sequel to the franchise, it could had been the point in which Pokemon flopped but if anything it boosted it up into even higher grace, and when the remakes came out those games were so filled with content and genuine love it was hard to not consider it basically one of if not the very bets Pokemon games so far

I feel like (while living through it at the time) BW is the transition bewtween classic and modern bcoz they tried to reboot the franchise (most noticeable in the anime, card game design philosophy, BW adding the most no. of pokemon and distancing itself from the previous games). The problem is at the time people hated the changes in BW so when B2W2 and esp with Gen 6 they changed course and made the games easier and started pandering to nostalgia (hence mega evolution and regional forms in the later generations). This is to say that BW couldve been the start of modern pokemon but because of the change in direction it became a transition because its so different from classic pokemon and modern pokemon.
BW felt like a fakemon game. Only game ive never finished in the franchise. Not to mention weather was completely busted in that Gen.

We all have our preferences. I like Gen 3 the most, myself. I know it’s a little off topic. I think Gen 4 had pretty much everything better. New evolutions, better remakes of better classics, and on top of it all new Eeveelutions. I love Gen 4, but Gen 3 still holds that special place.

Im split on this, obviously Modern Pokemon has all the newer Gen Pokemon i really love. Like, im a big fan of Vikavolt, Alolan-Exeggutor, Sirfetch'd and all these other Pokemon that don't even exist in the older versions, plus the QoL improvements like how TM's aren't just a one time thing, and whatnot. But the classic games aka Gen 3/Gen 4 feel like a story adventure unlike any other. Some of the older "features" like the lower Pokemon pool, XP and TM mechanics add weight to your decisions somehow, like your starter being way more important because Pokemon with 100+ in their best stats arent running around everywhere or the way you have to commit adding a new party member by grinding them instead of getting fed infinite XP Candy's after an hour in the wild area, which others would see as a inconvenience. Im more of a Classic fan but like i said its just preference, they're both great in their own ways.
agree with the xp candies. it's a great mechanic if you are into online competitive battling, but otherwise I'm not a fan. catching something and raising it up to add it to your team is more satisfying imo, and strengthens your bond with your team a lot.
@@lloydirving6209 I'd say the same for the automatic XP share. The worst hand holding in the later gens is how easy it is to beat the games. Sword and Shield are 10-15 hours of game time from start to champion.
I think it's just a cycle. Gen 4 & 5 were despised for a very long time, and gen 6 & 7 were beloved on release. We're an inconsistent-ass community.

It is all relative. Gen4 was likely hated for diamond and pearl, gen6 was only loved specifically because it was not 5 and gen7 was always very split in the community. Just that it was not a trashfire of a conversion like gen8.

@@RollsRyda Yeah. It's unfortunate but it is true. The main problem (i think) is that the fans complain about not getting a pokemon game and the pokemon company won't give gamefreak enough time.

Plain and simple: 1 to 5 is Classic, 6 to 8 is Modern. I cannot stress how much I LOVE Gen 5.
I think Gen 5 fits in more with modern, because of the difficulty and all the story in it

Pokemon RSE was the first Pokemon games I played, but it was with my brother. DP were the first Pokemon games I played on my own. So I have a heart for those 2 games on their own.
Simliar with me. My first mainline game was Diamond but I had already played the gen 3 games and even the some gen 2 games on my cousin's GBA/GBC. I even played the GameCube games (XD and Colosseum) prior to Diamond and Pearl releasing.

If the "classic" generations weren't plagued by outdated mechanics (Ex: Physical-special split), I'd easily prefer them over their remakes and modern gens

This best summarizes how I feel about the classic era. I want to go and play FR/LG but the fact of not having the physical-special split, for example, low-key bugs me.

The classic games are still playable today but gen 1 is insannely broken.
It would probably go a long way for GF to add a Hard Mode option and expand on Wild Areas in future games.

The game that I enjoy the most was probably hg/ss and platinum, but b/w and b2/w2 I absolutely loved. I think making a Pokédex where you only have the generational Pokémon until you beat the game I think feels the best to me. I love to play with new Pokémon and I don’t want to be persuaded to go to my old favorites

Even most of the professional nuzlockers say that ultra sun / ultra moon are the most difficult games. I would also say that the games are the best for competitive, because there is no 20 minute timer like in sword and shield, you have battle replays, megastones and Z-moves are also included and you have the largest selection of Pokémon. (807) I really love these games.
I still think SM and decently hard mainly because the totem are just so powerful even against type advantages especially in the early game, and I’m just gonna Kukui fucked me up the first time round compared to Leon who was easy as hell

I've been playing since Gen 1, and there's something I love about every generation. Gens 2, 4, 5, and 7 are my personal favorites.
Somewhat frustrated/disappointed with Gen 8, but the Crown Tundra gave me hope for the future of the franchise. I hope Game Freak begins to challenge itself.
