This might be one of the absolute most exciting series on the entire website. Your explanations and easy to watch/listen style is truly is a relief. Personally can't wait to see you eventually start racing and all the steps it takes to get race-ready.

Honestly, even though it's not the intention of this video, you've done a really good job of explaining how parts work to a less knowledgeable audience. I never really understood how things like torsion bars worked or could be adjusted but even with your short explanation and demo you've shown it perfectly. Same with how you showed how the brake bias works. Aside, I'm now following this project closely and looking forward to what's next!
Don't adjust ride height with the spring seats, normally on a car like this you give the front some preload (like 3 turns) and set up the ride height with the pushrods.
isn't preload settings supposed to be changed only when changing driver (weight) ? I'd keep the suspension travel at 70% up with driver and fuel onboard
@@tkzii6207 preload is just to get rid of too much sag. So with a rwd car you want some sag at the rear (to keep traction) but not at the front (so able to run less anti roll). With a linear spring the (little) amount of preload doesn't have an impact on spring rate. You're referring to corner weighing and that you also only change by the pushrods.
If you can't adjust the pushrods, then it can be done with adjusting the spring seats but that isn't the preferable method.
So normally you would set the ride height (with driver weight in seat, 14kg fuel in), do the alignment, the front on a formula car/Single seater/prototype should now be almost equal in weight and do the rest of the corner weighing at the back. Front should be equal left to right, crossweight 50%.
In big lines. UA-cam comment section isn't the best platform to properly explain stuff. But as I said in a different comment, look up the Radical manuals on radical registry for useful information

I've never seen a racing channel really go over each mechanical aspect in such an understandable way! I love it!

Just ensure the airbox is sufficiently higher than your head when wearing a helmet. Otherwise if you role the car it could end very bad...

Some small things. The cover on the front is for making shock adjustments and for adjusting the swaybars. Ride hieght and corner weight is adjusted from the pushrods. For camber, most modern formula cars use shims to adjust camber not with the rod ends. Between the top of the upright and the block which the a arms attach should be a stack of shims. Changing the thickness of the stack changes the camber

@@TTRacingYT you can make the shims out of various thickness aluminum sheet. Its a good idea to record what thickness shim results in what change in camber.

I've also enjoyed translating the sim racing setup side to physical parts on the car. Sway bars is one of my go to changes when setting up a car on a sim, so I'm glad it seems quite straightforward and accessible to tune here.

The spring seats are adjusted to set the corner weights. For setting the ride height, the push rods will have some adjustment. Here's looking forward to you having lots of fun with this😊

@@TTRacingYTYeah, the spring perch are for adjusting preload on the springs only! Ride height and corner weight are adjusted via the pushrod. I would highly recommend getting a set of scale pads and more importantly pad cradles so you can level the car! If you just have pads with light them being level you get no useful information other than the total weight of the car. I’m a professional in high level motorsports so message me with any questions!

if you're not planning on doing it already, I'd look up a base setup for the type of car and do a string and bar alignment if it's not been done. Massively changes the handling characteristics of the car, and will make your first test go much smoother.

Hoping to follow your season with the car when you start driving
A word of advise, as it’s dry sumped when you start it if it hasn’t been started for awhile it’s a good idea to run up oil pressure first by turning it over without the ignition on. When you see the oil pressure rising to maybe 1 bar then switch the ignition on and start it.
Many garage nights, touching every nut and bolt, castorcambertoe, bump steer, corner weights, ride height and the long road searching for 3 seconds begins.......delicious agony.
I am looking forward to seeing you design and fabricate a chain guard for this machine. I am certain that you and the carvera will both do superb work that will end up being the envy of the paddock. Having two mechatronics engineers digging into this sport can only mean great things to come along with some very good content for folks like me (who love both making and racing) to watch.
Oh and by the way, don't use the reverse unless absolutely necessary. The reverse in this Diff courses a lot of drama.
That's definitely the plan. I worked that out after it got stuck the first time.
You motivate me to work harder so I can get one of these while I’m still in my 20’s. Fast road cars are cool but to me circuit racing in an open wheeler is where it’s at.

As many have said use the pushrod to set corner weight and ride height. I would recommend pulling the pushrod adjusters apart to check the engagement length of the rod ends and also the wall thickness of the adjuster. There was a batch of adjusters made for these cars with insufficient wall thickness and they are prone to failure. Any questions just ask

You need to look up apexspeed as thats the forum where the F1000 class pretty much was born. Lots of good info on the F1000 cars maybe not so much on the Speads chassis as they werent the best even when they came out but should still have some good info for you. Also you might want to think about switching to 7-9" tires as that was the better combo for the cars.
I did some reading there while researching what car to buy. There's actually a thread there where a person was asking about this exact car as a possible purchase. I'm guessing they never did since I now own it.

To set your baseline brake bias, with all wheels off the ground, step on the brake just enough that Dave can't turn the front wheels by hand but can barely turn the rears. It's a good starting point and you can then adjust on track.

Wonderful single seater and for myself i could fall in love with the bodywork and wings alone.
I would be worried about the electronic stuff because after following Praga R1 here in the UK ,that is usually the only thing that goes wrong.
As an old timer i will stick to my Historic Mk 1 Cortina and Hillman Imp builds.

I think I will cover this in time. I feel like the engine and gearbox are somewhat future proofed. I've done an engine swap before on a road car so doable. I'm currently tracking down a mold of the front wing and I've heard there are jigs floating around to remake suspension arms.
You might want to check that you fit in it, when you sit in it your head has to be sheltered so if you roll, the roll bar is going to touch the ground so you don't break your neck. You can check by sitting in the car and tieing a piece of string from the roll bar behind your head and the roll bar infront of the steering wheel. hope you fit
I've done the test and currently the top of my helmet just touches the line. I'm currently exploring options for getting myself a little lower.

From my experience racing motorbikes, you should do a track day or 3 BEFORE you actually race. You'll get and idea of what you need and can get a good procedure for leaving and coming into the pits. Learn what needs to be fixed/replaced and have an idea what the car wants.

This is great. Found you through 3D printing. I'm in the same boat as you re: car situation - been through all of the imports, then euro, dabbling in Lotus nowadays but think I'm ready for a true race car. Definitely insighful and will be following! Quick tip I find useful to remember which direction to tighten/loosen bolts is this saying: "Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty" (Left loosens, right tightens).
I used to teach that to my students but on this case the left and the right side of the car are different.

i was planning on building my own single seater and throw either a hayabusa or H2R engine in it, but with this i may just grab a F1000 car and put my own stuff in it cause these are pretty much exactly how i would like my own to look
There's a few floating around in Aus and North America too. In the UK they have Formula Jedi which is a similar type of car.
@@TTRacingYT I love the tall and wide sidepods, they just look right. the only major difference is that in my local area i can make this street legal quite easily, and that is exactly what i want to do. I already have a v12 mercedes as my daily driver/track toy, and a 1986 toyota hilux for off road fun, but i want something more dedicated to the track, but can still be legally driven on the streets. Thats the very small neich area i want to fal lin and with how light these cars are, and with the power that is possible out of the engines, it would be perfect, also the 305hp and 14k RPM redline of the 1 liter H2R engine would be music to my ears

It'd be cool to see a video about suspension setups. Although I know a bit for normal road cars and works on the same principles for open wheeled cars it is a bit different. Also would be really cool if safe to run the car with no body and watch the suspension move.
everyone assumes that you need a massive diffuser to get good downforce. that floor will easily produce more downforce than the 2 wings combined.
Also maybe you figured it out by now, but the red canister you called an oil pump is actually just your oil filter.
We did, thanks. We also found a traditional oil filter on the side of the block under the exhaust. That one is going to be hard to get to.
@@TTRacingYT yeah usually you only change the hard to reach one, per season. Clean the other one more often on each oil change.
On the car I sold I had a remote relocation oil filter kit. I wouldn't mind adding one here too.
Your wheels are ATS Motorsport Formula 3 wheels; they were the lightest wheels available for an F3 car for a long time. Made in Germany but not available new any more.
You guys should get custom shirts of the team logo and name!
Very nice piece of equipment there. Because you are so tall i would lay the battery down flat under your knees or under your seat and remove the fire bomb to better spot where it doesn't stand so tall. Just my opinion. Also that seat could become very uncomfortable, should consider moulding a new seat where you sit a bit lower and your shoulders are lower down in the car for protection also adding better support to your body and hips.
Keep the series up, very interested in seeing where this goes!
