I'm a little embarrassed to admit how much I enjoyed this. Something about hearing "organic matter" amd seeing that soil get aerated.😅

How about how everyone today ends up suffocating every newly planted tree we see by using way too much ♡rganic matter.
_Experts now expect this present day mulch mounding fad to kill more trees than both Dutch elm disease and emerald ash borer combined._
That's why we use an air Spade to bring buried trunk back to trees original birth grade level.

Hey guy's can't seem to find a place to rent an air spade, question though:why can't i use a power washer for this type of job?
the big selling point for an air knife or air spade is that it's just air so the roots of the tree are not at risk for damage as in using an auger for example: Power wash is just water. for a small job seems like it should work.

Hm, interesting idea. I have not researched this idea at all, but I suppose water could work. You would need to be very careful not to allow the high pressure water to strip the roots, cause damage, etc. I know that some power washers have enough force to strip paint, skin, etc. This would definitely hurt the root system. It could also get quite messy. I would love to hear more about how this project turned out!

LOL sorry about that, somehow your comment escaped my notice. Did you get the project? if yes, how did the power washer work out?

Have not tried the power wash method yet.

And before you do any of that make sure your aborist/landscaper didn't bury your tree so deep the root flair is 2 feet under ground. You can aerate and fertilize until the cows come home. Your tree won't make it past 10 years.

_Also remember not to walk over loosened soil for at least a year since it will be even way easier to recompact. Especially when wet._
Better still, seed naked dirt with native species grasses & Sedges before Broadcasting light blanket of inch in size or larger bark pieces/wood chips.

Yes! And native wildflowers! I 100% agree

I have over 20 trees planted in severely compacted clay, it seems the builder scraped off all the good soil and left only the clay. Unfortunately, it’s stunting the growth of every tree on my property. Is there a way to not only amend the soil but also create better drainage in a fully clay soil? Something that can be done by a home owner?

Healthy soil and plants will pull down LOTS of rain water. So if you focus on creating healthy soil and getting trees, shrubs, etc planted this should help with the drainage issue

Not a lot you can do but look into using a broad fork to break up the soil below the surface without completely turning it over and ruining roots. Don't overdo it

    What about using a broadfork?

    • @Leaflimb
      @Leaflimb  5 років тому +1

Maybe..... But you will need to be very careful to avoid damaging the root system.

@@Leaflimb I know nothing about it. I've heard that you would do it at the drip line to avoid damaging large roots.

I bet you $1 dollar that it says in your mycor mix or whatever you're using with living cultures states that anything over 50 PSI will kill them. If you're going at 200 PSI and that not just B-Roll, I'd make it a point to read the label again.

No need to bet, it's just compost. We know what we are doing :)
