  • Sometimes when you are out photographing wildlife you come across a small subject that you want to photograph. In my case it was a poisonous mangrove pit viper. What works better for capturing close ups with your telephoto lens? Is it extension tubes or a teleconverter? Check out which one I would recommend when trying to photograph those small subjects you find when you are out capturing images of wildlife with a large telephoto lens like the Nikon 600mm F4 FL lens.

    One thing to consider, with extension tubes, is that the more you have stacked, then the more voltage drop to your lens. Since this is extremely low voltage, and low amperage, I'm guessing that the autofocus would be significantly slower than when using a teleconverter.

    I appreciate how thorough you were and how you showed the formula as well as your actual math. Snakes are not my favorite, but 14ft with him in a tree felt safe.

      Thanks so much Steve! As with anything I do with photography, I am always learning and trying to show what i have done. So I am glad you liked seeing the actual math. I was amazed how many people walk past the snakes and don't see them. I was happy that it couldn't get onto the boardwalk I was on because I would be heading the other direction. :)

    Good video: My Olympus/OMD 300mm f4 has a minimum focusing distance of 1.4 metres. I attach an MC20 to it and photograph butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies. The subject fills the frame, but I do not get so close as to scare it off. I rarely refer to my lenses by their FF equivalent, but for those who do, my 300mm f4 + MC20 is the FF equivalent of 1200mm, and retains the minimum focusing distance of 1.4 metres. If I am able to do so, however, I use my OMD 90mm f3.5 macro lens, with or without my MC14/MC20 teleconverters attached. I am no macro purist: I use whichever lens is the most suitable at the time. I prefer to use a teleconverter rather than an extension tube because I can still use the lens at or close to infinity should the need arise.

      Thanks for the comment Pete and thanks for sharing your experience. I agree that I like the teleconverter because I still have the same focusing distance and I can still focus at infinity.

    I have a Canon 2x Extender iii EF, and I want to connect it to my Sigma 50-500mm EF lens, but it won't connect. If I get an extension tube, would this work?

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  8 місяців тому +1

      Not all lenses can be used with extenders. Some extenders have notches or parts that prevent them from being attached to specific lenses or even that prevent them from being stacked together with other extenders. This is sometimes done because extenders might damage a lens. The elements of a lens (especially a superzoom like your 50-500) may move a lot and may extend back close to the camera body where they may come into contact with the extender elements.
      You may be able to use an extension tube but then it is possible that you won't be able to focus your lens to infinity. So if you are trying to focus on something far away, an extension tube won't help.
      Some third party extenders don't have the notches and can be attached to any lens but you need to be careful that they don't damage your lens. I hope that answers your question.

    How about tele converter plus extension tubes with anti reflection layer DIY in it? And even more plus one ultrawide in reverse on front of the tele lens?
    To shoot ant's hair and eyes, how many magnification I need?
    And what if I reverse a Ultra wide lens like Sony 16-35mm F4 PZ at its 16mm on front of multiple the extension tubes, will I get even more magnification?
    Is the Sony 70-200mm F4 MACRO OSS G II with 2X tele converter that can produce 1:1 magnification still a good buy? It has autofocus to shoot closer up and long tele videos , but with extension tube and reverse attach an ultrawide on front of the lens will still get high magnification too right, just cumbersome right?

      Thanks for the comment. I was trying to see which would work better with a long telephoto lens like my 600mm F4. But I do love macro photography and I have done some comparisons of macro lenses which you can check out here: ua-cam.com/video/OV-YxUkWuFQ/v-deo.html
      I am currently working on a video which shows going beyond your macro lens by using a reversing ring and mounting a lens (in my case a 24mm or 28mm) lens backwards on the camera to go beyond 1:1 magnification. If you add extension tubes to that setup you can shoot ant's hair and eyes. The key is to reverse a wide angle lens as it will give you the most magnification. They are cheap: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1457020-REG/kipon_55mm_maf_sony_adapter.html

    I have a really good beginner question for ya, what if we mount the middle sized extension tube first, then the teleconverter, then the big sized extension tube and then the lens? Will that work? And also that might remove the vignette situation since magnification glasses will be more spread out or should we mount the teleconverter directly to the lens and camera to the extension tubes?

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  2 місяці тому +1

      That is a really, really great question! Sorry it took so long for me to test it out. Unfortunately, in the end, it wasn't possible for me to mount the middle sized extension tube then the teleconverter and then the big extension tube. The big extension tube wouldn't fit onto the front of the teleconverter. The lens in the front of the teleconverter sticks out and the opening of the extension tube won't fit over it without damaging it. Teleconverters often have things built in that prevent you from stacking them or using them with lenses that are not compatible so this may be the case here. It also may be possible with other brands of extension tubes and teleconverters even if it isn't possible with my set. Thanks again for your great question!

      @@thephotographytoolkit
      Hello there, thanks for the reply. I have tested the same thing out but apparently the problem don't exist with the viltrox 2x teleconverters, I can stack two of them on top and get 4x extra zoom for planetary imaging. And yes I can stack them until the image quality suffers greatly. For things like wildlife photography etc, using TC's are a bad option because you can get closer to the subject most of the time and the image quality suffers greatly even with a single 2x converter, however for shooting the moon I've used a single TC and it worked really really well. Also two TC's stacked together reduces the IQ of the moon but it still produces very usable images. So instead of doing a heavy heavy crop, I'd rather use two of them together to get closer to the Jupiter and then stack those images to get a much better image than cropped versions. Also check my moon video out. Peace. ua-cam.com/video/IVXUwUp9kaU/v-deo.html

      @@fy7589 Thanks for the reply. I don't think it is a 'problem' with the Nikon teleconverters. My understanding is that Nikon doesn't want you to stack them so they put a tab so you can't join them together. There may be some problems with the glass that extends out touching other parts of glass in other teleconverters and that is why they don't want you to stack them. I have heard different things so I am not 100% sure.
      I do know that the quality of the teleconverter will make a huge difference. I had an older Tamron teleconverter and the images were not as good as when I used my Nikon teleconverter.
      You mentioned that the image quality suffers greatly with a single 2X teleconverter and that hasn't been my experience with my Nikon TC 20Eii. It also depends on which telephoto lens you are putting the teleconverter on. When I use us my 1.4X, 1.7X, 2X with my 600mm F4 lens, the quality is good.
      The color grading in your video of the moon was super cool. Thanks for sharing.

      @fy7589 Місяць тому +1

      @@thephotographytoolkit Thanks again for the detailed response. Yeah I also think some manufacturers do not build their TC's stackable is because most of their everyday customers wouldn't be pleased with the stacked results so they are probably trying to avoid bad reviews to their brand which is understandable. Two teleconverters stacked will reduce the IQ greatly and it's not a good idea to use for anything other than planetary imaging or maybe video. But it's just super fun to stack them and get incredible reach once in a while :)
      Also thanks for the kind comment for my video.
      Cheers!
