Extension tubes can help turn your lens into a macro lens or give your lens some extra focal length. Extension tubes come in different lengths and some support auto focus. In this video I discuss how you can use extension tubes with your camera.

I think it's important to correct a couple of things in this video. First, when the presenter speaks of "focus distance" he means "working distance". Focus distance is from the plane of the sensor of the camera to the subject. Working distance is from the objective lens to the subject. Two different things. "Minimum working distance" is how close the objective lens of the camera can be brought to the subject while still maintaining focus. A short working distance is not in itself sufficient to make a setup a macro setup; the focal length is also a factor.
Related to this last point is a second point: reducing the working distance (as extension tubes do) does not automatically make a lens a macro lens. "Macro" photography is when the real world size of an object is imposed on the camera's sensor (or film) at that the same or larger size as the real world equivalent.
Finally, this presentation speaks of the role of the electrical contacts on extension tubes as being to support autofocus capability in the lens. That's true, but misses the second functionality the contacts support: aperture control. This functionality is at least as important as having electrical focus control.
Thank you. Do you hv a channel also. Am a beginner
I bought a new zoom lens and was disappointed seeing I couldn't zoom in closer because it'd just get out of focus so hearing about extension tubes is a blessing to not have to buy a whole new lens again.
This is more of a what it does than a how it works video, but great video
Fantastic description - very professional and much appreciated!!!
Best video on explanation on extension tubes. Thank you!
Question, can I use convert mount + macro tube at the same time?
One of the better videos explaining extension tubes, I still use them with my Canon 100mm L f2.8 Macro to give my a 2x magnification. I have appalling steadiness so I always use a tripod with a macro rail and a shutter cable. A definite subscription.
Or you could of payed under 600$ and gotten the laowa 100 2.8 2x zoom macro lens !
Thank you this is a very good video
Great instructional video and demonstration. Thanks.
Very clear explained!
Bought a couple years ago but never bothered to try it. But just did.. wow.. i can put my camera right up. awesome.
Although you've provided a lot of information, there are a couple things I'm not able to troubleshoot. I bought a Neewer extension tube set that claims to support auto focus. When I put one, all, or any of the tubes on my camera it won't focus at all (only by physically moving my camera forward/backward) but worse is that my camera doesn't seem to 'read' it and won't allow me to photograph. I get a multiple E showing on my screen. Any tips how I can get rid of that E and to get my shutter to work?
The actual review and instruction starts at 5:00, everything before that is a lot of filler. Hard to watch video, quite tedious and not to the point.
you should use a flower or an insect for macro, using a boat maybe not the best option even for demonstrate.
I just bought a Fujifilm x-t3 body and haven’t yet gotten my hands on a native lens, I have an old kit lens for my canon 600d and was wondering if these extension tubes could help me out as I am currently using vintage lenses with non electrical adaptors, and would like to use the the image stabiliser and AF on the canon lens.
I’m new to this so at a bit of a loss, please help :)
Thanks, great video !

Can you advice where I can find an option of enabling shooting without lens on for a6000? Jus receives those rings with outofocus option and they are not focusing at all, not in auto and not in manual. Just completely blured immage. Was looking trough the menu and I didnt find anything what could solve it.
What camera did you use to film this video? Nice, CLEAN focus and clean 1080...
Even I can understand that. Many thanks.
I've found that, despite being an ardent supporter of autofocus since I got a Sony a6500, autofocus with macro extension tubes will still really struggle to get what you want and the touch screen sure as hell won't work either.
I have an 85mm nikon 1.8 lense. Can I make convert it to macro with the extension tubes and take product photography with it?
Fun thanks !
Can I use an extension tube on a macro lens?
My t3 old dslr has that zoom in function in display mode.
Can I use an extension tube on a lens with high minimal f stop to get portaits with shallower DoF?
Another question: are there any drawbacks from using an extension tube?
Yes you can
A draw back would be that they aren't as good as macro extensions but for the price they are 100% worth getting it
Will this work for me as well as it did here? I have a Nikon D 3400 with the kit lenses. (18-55 and 70-300).
Glenn Crisler II I have Polaroid ones and they work fine
Sir, I use the manual Sony Mirrorless Extension Tube, I tried but the F (Aperture) error. I'm using a Sony a5100, can you help?
Hello, does this work with video recording?
do these extension tubes work for all canon cameras regardless of what lens you use them on? i have an 80d will the kenko work? thanks
+printcordesigns If you buy Canon specific extension tubes for EF mount, yes.
Only for Macro or can I also take my Fuji 35mm to a 50mm for shooting portraits of people?
Why do you look yellow/green on the sides of your face, and pink in the middle of it?
Because he has a green screen behind him. You need a well lit green screen for the best results but that means you will have green light reflecting onto your subject if they are too close.
@@codyanderson4132 Thanks buddy, We learn something new everyday.
What are inner threads of extension tubes used for?
How can you tell exactly the focus distance you get with tubes on?
That’s interesting
So, if I'm a little paranoid and plan on only using manual focus anyway for macro shots, I can just get the dumb extension tubs without the metal pins? I wonder how hard it would be to just drill your own holes and shove some pins in a cheap tube
Im just starting out here...and my question is...when using a extension tube thats does not have autofocus, will the camera say your subject is in focus even tho you are manually focusing it....? The camera is a Canon digital rebel XT..
70 200 lens ko zoom lens banana ho toh keya lagta hai ?
"more of a minimum focus distance" .. aaargh!
The minimum focus distance is not measured from the end of the lens, it is measured from the focal plan mark on the camera body ;)
best
Macro lens doesn’t mean that it has short focal distance🤦🏻♂️ it means that 1mm in real live is represented by 1mm on the sensor....
Which camera do you use? I heard you said Sony, but Sony what? Please answer this thank you 😊
MikkelRützou Vlogs a6500
How can u change f no of lens if u r using extension tubes without electrical connection
You can only do so in manual lenses.
Modern autofocus lenses only have a focus ring but no aperture control ring, so they will remain wide-open at their smallest f-number. To shoot at higher f-numbers, for a deeper DOF, you need a manual focus lens, either a modern one or a decent quality vintage model off eBay, since these will have a manual aperture control ring.
"Extension Tubes: How Do They Work?"
This video title would p;lssibly be more accurate if it read, "Extension Tubes: How to use"
I was expecting (with the current title) for the video to include a diagram of light coming through a camera lens and hitting the sensor, then show a second diagram of the same thing, but with an extension tube added to the lens. This would clearly explain how the extension tube manages to manify the subject of the photograph.
Extension tube reduces f no. and therefore clarity of Lens. Just adventure is Focus area is reduced very much.
Let me confuse everyone..if u have a 18mm lens do not stack ext tubes to equal greater than 18mm ...will not focus
Damn, and I clicked this thinking this was for shotgun extension tubes lmao
The goal is NOT to "get closer", but to enlarge the image captured by the film/sensor. Video does not explain "how" they work. Using this lens "naturally". Nothing "natural" about a camera lens. Need to show a diagram and explain the focal point. What happens is the lens has a "focal point"; the area on the sensor which is the focal plane. The lens elements are designed to be able to focus an object onto the focal plane at the focal point within the range of focus; from the closeup to infinity. Moving the lens away from the focal plane shifts the focus range; decreasing the distance the lens can focus up close and decreasing the far away distance that can be focused on; no longer infinity. The lens does not have infinity anymore. A handy thing is that the lens can be focused onto the surface of the front element or lens filter; one can see all the dirt and dust on the lens!
you look green from the green screen
He's secretly the Hulk!
F10 with all those tubes and a lens haaaaaaa
It was nice to attempt a video that answers a few if any questions. U fail to mention so many things. No macro photographer is going to use autofocus first off
You have to do a remake.
it is rubbish
