    I has a wheel bearing replaced on my 2011 Q5 3.2L last year. Fascinating to see what my mechanic had to do. Thank you.

    I liked how you didn’t let the seized bolt beat you. I don’t know if you tried this but if you have a rusty bolt that’s starting to seize up on you as you back it out: screw it back in a turn after giving it a spray and then back it out again. Repeat every couple of anti-clockwise turns. This can often get you out of bother - It’s a bit like breaking the chip when cutting a thread. Very handy on older cars with rusty bolts.

    Thanks for posting, I came across a great video tip the other week which might help. when you got the first bolt turning DONT take it out tighten again then move on the next bolt slightly undoing then tighten again till you have got all bolts turned, then take all off. Haven’t tried myself yet but might work. Few extra min job but could pay off

    Thanks for these great project videos, I just wish I'd come across these sooner. I would have snapped you hand off for the 3.2 A3. I part ex'd mine 8 years ago with the lumpy idle and the chain needing to be replaced. I've regretted that day since. Keep up the great work and cool videos. I'll be keeping a close eye for any more 3.2s popping up!

    Really good video. I had same problem, with two heads rounded off. So I didn't know how to proceed and I mounted everything back. My question is: after you cut the end of the screw, are you able to remove it without any problem or there is a thread even on the knuckle part? I ask you that because I saw there is a thread throughout the screw itself, just beginning under the head of the screw until the end of it. This, made me think that maybe wasn't enough to just cut the screw with an emery, because it would have remained screwed in the knuckle part.
    Thank you!

  • @nzrestoration9486

    It is better if the bolt comes loose initially to spray penetrate and actually do the nut back up, undo and keep repeating that. More often than not it will come out. If it does not budge at all and rounds off then you are in a world of pain. Great video by the way.

    Ask Scotty, you’ve got yourself a money pit, it’s an Audi. Copper grease on the bearing / upright interface, loctite (screwloc) on the screws easy disassembled next time round. So too on the brake assembly and use a torque wrench as you build it up.

    Yeah i'm about to replace one on my dad's rs3,he destroyed his bolt tread and he let himself get screwed by the dealership,they charged him nearly 500euro for a front wheel bearing🧐 i told him he's nuts that he payed that amount of money on a 60 euro part.But yeah front bearings are fairly easy,it's the back bearing that's more difficult with these haldex 4wd's

    Good inspiring report, the only constructive criticism was the caliper was not fully supported at all times. Other than that you have my vote.

    I need to replace the front driveshaft on my Jetta but when lowering the bottom ball joint and removing the three bolts will that mean the tracking will need to be re-adjusted afterwards? (Although my 2008 Jetta might not be quite the same as on a Audi A3).

    • @SavingSalvage
      @SavingSalvage  4 роки тому +1

      You should be okay, you will know if it’s adjustable as there will be movement in the joint with the bolts in. But if the holes are only just big enough for a bolt there will be no adjustment so all okay 👍🏽

    I always find that retightening the caliper mount bolts to FT has always been quite sufficient.....so why when you try to undo them are they always WCDTU..... as in what c**t did that up, which as any fule kno, is only for nuts or bolts that ain't NEVER gonna be removed ever again. Nice job, uptick.

    It's interesting that when you use an angle grinder you wear safety glasses; yet when using a regular socket on an impact wrench you wear no protection. A ginding wheel failure will generally send shrapnel relative to the rotation of the wheel; a socket failure will send shrapnel in all directions. Buy some impact sockets.

    For that wheel bearing bolt. When rounded, clean it up and weld a big nut on it. The heat makes sure it moves easier and the nut gives you something to turn it. Easier than grinding in many cases.

      @@SavingSalvage It's more the angles I'm struggling with. Happy that the splines need to align, but I can't seem to get both the hub and the shaft square on with just me. Feel like I'm doing way more manipulation of the hub than you had to. Maybe my suspension has relaxed and so dropped a few centimetres, preventing the shaft from lining up?
