Companies can only use other stores to keep stores afloat for so long. Gas prices (especially diesel), minimum wage hikes (yes, unrelated industries impact each other in unexpected ways), high theft, etc means that already low profit margins mean that your entire company tanks when the market is imploding.

Our 99 cent store never even repaired a broken window due to a car being run into the building. They are over ordering on items that don't sell while buying less items on from the ones that do sell. They are charging more and more. It has do with greed. Our store has high turn over rate. My husband and I hardly see the same workers and we shop there weekly for the cheaper items such as veggies and fruit. But even we know that the stockers are placing rotten items in those bins and they know it. Heck one month they sold expired tortillas that were weeks old. The quality after David stepped down years go has slowly been headed down a bad path. Getting worse and worse. This year I found my self shopping Aldi and Walmart more because of the veggies, fruits, eggs, and other items weren't rotten. The staff don't care and barely make eye contact, rarely say hi, how is your day. I walk in there you can never find a cart or small basket. It took 30 minutes for a staff member to clean up a broken bottle of starbucks coffee after they had been told it was all over the floor...not even anything to warn people that broken glass was down the isle. Children were in the store.

I sometimes throw out my trash into their dumpsters of their backyard and every 3-4 days I see a blue dumpster entirely filled with fresh-looking fruits and vegetables. It’s like we saw this closure coming from miles away.
