Dude, I feel your pain! It's like, everyone's saying "Later, gators!" but the traffic's still partying like it's spring break, right? It's enough to make even the chillest surfer scratch their head and wonder what's up with the cosmic traffic jam vibes, ya know? But hey, maybe it's just all those leftover waves from people catching their last rides outta town! Hang tight, keep those beach tunes cranked, and eventually, we'll catch the green light wave together, dude! 🚗🌊🎶

Your comment highlights some significant challenges facing our community, and it's understandable to feel frustrated by these issues. High home prices, rents, taxes, gas rates, and crime rates certainly impact the quality of life for many residents in San Diego County.
While the situation may seem daunting, it's important to recognize that there are opportunities for positive change. By coming together as a community, we can advocate for policies that address housing affordability, support initiatives to improve safety, and engage with local leaders to address concerns about taxes and gas rates.
It's also worth exploring alternative options and resources available to us. Whether it's researching neighboring areas with more affordable housing options or getting involved in community efforts aimed at tackling these challenges, there are ways we can work towards creating a better future for ourselves and future generations.
Let's stay informed, engaged, and hopeful as we navigate these issues together. Together, we can make a difference in shaping the future of San Diego County.

What’s worse is that the kinda people moving out are the ones you actually want to stay in your community - teachers, barbers, police, fire, etc. The people moving in are coastal elites looking for a change of scenery, or a second home 3 months out of the year.

    • @danzna

I completely understand your concerns about the demographic shifts happening in San Diego County. It's disheartening to see essential members of our community, such as teachers, barbers, police, and firefighters, leaving for various reasons.
The influx of coastal elites seeking second homes or a change of scenery can indeed pose challenges, particularly in terms of maintaining the fabric of our local community and ensuring that essential services remain accessible and sustainable for all residents.
As we navigate these changes, it's crucial for us to advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize the needs of longtime residents and essential workers. This might involve supporting affordable housing initiatives, investing in local businesses that cater to the needs of our community, and advocating for fair and inclusive development policies.
Additionally, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity can help bridge divides and ensure that newcomers and longtime residents alike feel valued and connected. By working together and championing the interests of all members of our community, we can strive to create a vibrant and equitable San Diego County for generations to come.

I'm glad to hear that you've found a positive outcome after leaving San Diego, despite the challenges you faced with the high cost of living, even on a $120k salary. It's important to prioritize your financial well-being and overall happiness, and it sounds like you've made a decision that aligns with your personal circumstances and priorities.
While San Diego offers many attractions and opportunities, affordability can certainly be a significant concern for many residents. Your experience underscores the importance of considering various factors, including cost of living, when making decisions about where to live and work.
If you have any tips or insights based on your experience that you'd like to share with others who might be facing similar challenges, feel free to do so. And remember, there's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to choosing a place to live - it's all about finding what works best for you.

It sounds like you have a strong attachment to your home in East County, and it's understandable that you would have preferred to stay if the circumstances allowed. The decision to move can be difficult, especially when it means leaving behind a place that holds sentimental value and cherished memories.
Unfortunately, the factors influencing population movements, such as housing affordability, job opportunities, and quality of life, can sometimes lead individuals to seek alternatives outside of their current area. While it's regrettable that you had to leave your preferred location, I hope that your new surroundings offer you opportunities for growth, happiness, and fulfillment.
Remember that home is not just defined by a physical location but also by the people, experiences, and memories that shape our lives. Even if you've relocated geographically, the connections you've formed and the memories you've made in East County will always be a part of you.

It's understandable to feel concerned about the declining population in San Diego County and to wonder about the reasons behind it. However, attributing it to a deliberate effort to run people out may be oversimplifying a complex issue.
Population changes in any area are influenced by a multitude of factors, including economic conditions, housing affordability, job opportunities, lifestyle preferences, and demographic shifts. While there may be certain policies or market forces that contribute to people leaving the area, it's unlikely that there's a deliberate effort to drive residents away.
That being said, it's crucial for local leaders and policymakers to address the underlying issues that may be contributing to population decline, such as high housing costs, limited job opportunities, or inadequate infrastructure. By fostering a supportive environment that addresses the needs of residents and encourages growth and development, we can work towards building a stronger and more vibrant community for everyone.

Greed and employers refusing to pay a living wage. That and the fact that full time employment is rarely offered here anymore. When one on my employers started asking why they were having so much trouble getting people to move here and work we told them people won't stay where they can't afford to buy a home no matter how nice everything else is. Instead of considering that, they doubled down on refusing to increase pay. They would clearly rather cut the work force and have us work short than make it worthwhile to stay. We are now even more expensive than San Francisco to live in, and make far less doing the same job as coworkers in SF. When we have asked about that they just shrug and say "it's what the market will bear". San Diego employers have lost their way.

I understand your frustration with the challenges facing San Diego County, but wishing for such a significant exodus of residents might not be the most constructive solution. While population decline can alleviate some pressures, such a drastic reduction could have far-reaching consequences for the community and its infrastructure.
Instead of focusing on a specific target for population decline, perhaps we can work together to address the underlying issues that contribute to dissatisfaction and drive people away. By advocating for policies that promote affordability, sustainability, and quality of life, we can strive to create a more livable and inclusive environment for all residents.
It's important to remember that communities thrive when they embrace diversity, innovation, and collaboration. Rather than wishing for mass departure, let's channel our energy into building a brighter future for San Diego County that benefits everyone.

We need a lot more housing to sustain the current population or for many, many more thousands of people to leave and many, many more thousands to stop moving here.

Run a regression of the change in housing prices with days supply of inventory and you will find your answer (thank you Moody's). People are locked into mortgages with a 3-handle when the current rate has a high-six handle. They also will likely pay large capital gains taxes upon the sale of their property. Finally, Prop. 13 limits property tax increases at 2% when house prices have been increasing by 5%-6% annually (see Case Shiller). Prop. 19 allows those over 55 a moving exemption on property taxes, but at the end of the day, it is not economical for people to sell their homes.
