In Los Angeles 99c stores, I see homeless bums ruining it for the rest of us hard working tax payers.
Bunch of junkies think the 99c store is shoplifting heaven.
This place helped me survive in college. For $3, I got a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, and bananas.

Me too.
I was just staring my shift when the store manager told me the news. 😕
It's a blessing in disguise. Now you can move onto bigger and better things.

Sorry to hear about this. Thank you for your service.❤
Who is out here stealing stuff that don't even cost $1? This is why we can't have nice things
We ruin everythang 😢
When was the last time you went in a 99 cents store? Not everything in there is 99 cents.
I was in line there talking to a lady who was holding a cute little dog. As we got closer to the register I noticed that she was looking around and a little fidgety. She grabbed a Starbucks bottle out of the fridge in line and she kept looking around. Next thing I know she is power walking it out of the door with the dog. I realized she STOLE THAT DRINK!!! Like really? If she had asked me to buy it for her I would have.
Most things there are over $1 but still relatively affordable.
it's not theft... it's worse
The 99 cent store helped me out so much when I live on my own. It’s really sad to hear the store will be closing. Life is tough and expensive but the 99 never let me go hungry and occasionally let me find some home decor. The 99 will truly be missed.
Low income people are getting attacked and I don't know why. We can't afford McDonald's anymore. And now a major resource that we greatly depend on is taken away. Do politicians want even more homeless people in the streets? That's really what it feels like!
Stop eating fast food and you'll save money
This one hurts. I have many fond memories of the 99 Cent Only Stores, when I was a kid and teen. Even as an adult, they were always great for getting cleaning supplies, snacks, certain toiletries, and even later fresh fruits, and veggies. I'm so sad to see them go. Prayers to all the employees who'll be let go due to this as well.
Gracias al tio Joe Biden.....
The 99 cent stores served as a good barometer to find out how much we were overpaying for the some of the same items in regular stores.
Yes and dollar tree has raised everything to $1.25 which is quite a rip off on some items
Yup. $20 always went a long ways.
Not neccessarily. A lot of what the 99 cent store was selling were expired or almost expired produce and products. I would rather pay double in a name brand super market for an item that is fresher and lasts longer.
Not really some things at 99c store are not good
@@ejicon3099 A few days expired does no harm. I eat cereal expired for a year or even two, and I finish the whole cereal box during the week, with no repercussions.

I LOVE the 99 Cents Only Store. They are/were the best discount store. You never knew what they would have, but always terrific bargains. When I read of their closing this morning, I threw on a dress and a jacket and went straight there. It was already somewhat picked over, but I brought my own cart on wheels and bags, and grabbed what I could. I will go back tomorrow. Everyone is the store was stunned and bummed. This sucks.
The rampant theft that Sacramento allows to go unpunished is harming everyone but the thieves. WE, the consumers, are paying the price for weak-on-crime laws. I am a democrat who is tired of the far-left being pro-thief. Friends of mine that work in grocery and drug stores tell me of thieves walking out of the store with a SHOPPING CART full of un-paid for items, and the employees are blocked from stopping them. It is so messed up that our country is run by idiotic extremists on both sides of the political isle.
Exactly! I stopped being a democrat when i saw how the politicians on california sold everyone out so they can funnel money, enable crime, and actively endanger the general community. Its pure evil if you ask me.

How can any store be profitable when that woman said she witnesses 20 shoplifters a day and nobody can do anything. Should we just close all stores due to shoplifting now? This is insanity how there's no repercussions against stealing in this state. What about all the low income honest people who are impacted by these store closures? Quite sad...

Against those odds, the 99 cent Only Store could NEVER survive, no matter what price they charged. It is the politicians who are permitting this whole sale theft to continue against this and every other store in America. There was a point in my life when I was unbelievably broke and the 99 cent store was the only way I could put food on my table. I would have literally starved without that store. I'm truly devastated by this newest because I know from personal experience that there are a lot of families who depend on that store.
When people say that you should not prosecute shoplifters and it is a victimless crime, look now at all of the people hurt because dollar stores are closing. When Target and Walmart said that retail crime was a real thing, people said it wasn't a problem and they were just making it more than it was. Now the dollar stores are closing and you see why it is important to prosecute criminals and stop shoplifters. They operated these stores cheaply so people could buy cheaper items they can afford. But if the margins are low and the theft is high, the business model doesn't work. Tell your politicians you want shoplifting and crime to stop.
Get out and VOTE against public servants who don’t serve the public by not prosecuting crime.. Gascon has got to go!!

The same people who said businesses needed to be shut down for public safety.
The same people who think printing trillions and sending money to foreigners won't hurt the purchase power of the dollar.
The same people who invite everyone from everywhere to live off of welfare, but won't give anyone a room in one of their many mansions.
The same people who believe you should rent your homes from monopolized corporations, but if you rent a 2nd home the tenants don't have to pay you.
The same people who blame society for not being "progressive" enough for all thier moronic ideas, when they inevitably fail to stand against reality.

It started if I remember about 10 years ago when they started slowly changing and or adding some items for $1.99 and they would put tiny little tags on them. Then it was $2.99 and finally I believe a lot of things went up to $8.99. Brought in refrigerators selling milk for $3.99 and outstanding produce! I then only bought their produce and that was it. The decline in the "99 Cent Only" store can't be solely blamed on inflation. The new owners didn't adhere to the original plan set by the founder. Initially, it was a closeout and overstock store, offering a treasure hunt experience to buyers. However, the new owners shifted focus, overpricing items and adding everyday items like Dollar Tree, eliminating the appeal of finding unique overstocks. Their poor strategies led to a decline in customers. As someone who used to buy items to resell online, I noticed a significant decline in the quality and uniqueness of the items after the new owners took over.
I’m crying and throwing up 😭💔

Why didn't they double their prices? It would still be at least 50% cheaper than regular brick and mortar or online grocer/retailers.
They’ve had many items costing well over a dollar, some $12.99 and even higher…I believe that’s why they changed it to “The 99 Store”. But yes, perhaps if they doubled some of there more lower priced goods to $2, it might have made a difference. They likely considered numerous ways of making the margins work and still, was ultimately deemed unviable.
It’s really unfortunate for all the workers and patrons alike.
@@CuriosityQueue I know their prices have gone up most food items only went up about 29 to 49¢, canned goods, etc and shampoo, cleaning items. I've seen go up to between $2 and $3 like chips and larger quantity items and produce but it's still a lot cheaper than Kroger's, etc. The thing I noticed was that they expanded to cooking household goods and similar items like dog pillows, floor fans, etc, etc, etc. which I think was a mistake, they should have kept it simple. If Dollar Tree, Family Tree and even Dollar General downsize or close-up that would be devastating. Dollar General although not a Dollar Store for years now is much cheaper than the best priced items at Target and Walmart and Amazon. I love Dollar General. I buy about 80% of my items from these stores. My costs would double at least if I had to go to Walmart and Target which are cheaper than Kroger, Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons, etc. I went to the deli counter at Ralph's and was shocked at the deli meat and cheese prices which used to be economical, I didn't buy anything because I didn't want to pay $12 to make my own sandwich with cheese, meat and produce. Plus the price of bread. I haven't made a homemade sandwich in 10 years because homemade hot dishes are so cheap and delicious.

Exactly . . Central Banks control corporations that control consumers.
Why didn't they listen
Too bad history always repeats itself. The banks are in control now.

Got a news notification from the LA Times about this and gotta say it was a small punch to the gut. This one's gonna hurt to see go. I got so many great deals there over the years. They started raising prices in 2008, during the Recession and it only went up from there. But prior to that it was so awesome to go in there with like $10 or $20 bucks and leave the store with 10 or 20 things. Im sure A TON of people depended on these stores for their groceries or to supplement them, so it really is an unfortunate loss in the retail space. Something needs to be done about this rampant theft throughout the state of California. The closure of this chain just goes to show that companies/businesses cannot sustain the amount of money that is being lost due to this huge issue. In some cases, the costs of the loss are passed onto the paying consumer, in other cases, the store jumps ship. Some people act like it's no big deal, the stores insurance will cover the losses, etc. Stealing is not okay, people. I know that times are tough for most people, but who said it was okay to just take whatever you want and not pay for it? It's becoming the wild wild west and it doesn't look like things will be improving any time soon.
I'm gonna miss my 99 cents store. Thank for the memories..........
I love how the well off reporters find it humorous to see people in distress due to discount stores they rely on due to hard times closing down.
Asking “what are you gonna do!?”
Like WTF
What?? It was the one LA business I thought would always be around. I feel for their employees and people who really depend on them for shopping. I'm in shock tbh
Me too. I still can’t believe our local CSUN / Northridge location closed down. They always did great business and were always busy.
Blame dollar general
I loved getting my garden supplies here.
Anyone who was in some financial stress can understand why we're so sad of these stores closing. 😭
Everything is getting worse by the minute!!!! I’m going to miss the 99cent store it got me through really tough times when I only had 5$ to eat .
Hopefully you have a Winco near by. That place always has really good deals.
Why couldn't they raise prices and rebrand them self as "Buck Fiddy" or something?
First toys r us now this take me back to the 90s
Labor cost is also getting out of control. The fast food 20$ is going to force all employer's to pay 20$ an hour eventually . So u can expect 1000s of more businesses to close especially in ca .
Partially. The FAstfood will not hit as hard cuz they're going to pivot to mostly automated systems really quickly. Expect to see WAY more quiosk type order/interface and barely any employees at the restaurants.. with increase drive-thru/mobile order only locations popping up.
@@mambi74exactly
It's not the labor cost at fault it's their realty markets and other markets that don't add up.. nobody bothered to keep anything in check .
@@wayneroberts6642 no more free markets . No more price discovery.
99 cent stores are not fast food and that 20 dollars does not apply
Theft is so rampant in so many states and it doesn’t help that many states decriminalized theft.I totally understand why they’re closing but it’s sad for the communities.
Crimes....crimes..... it is the most important factor since it is such a low profit business! They can afford the high retail theft insane level we have today.
😢 back in the 90s when i lived in L.A this was my favorite store as a child and growing up. Now i live in the bay area sf very expensivo 😢😢 i missed the 90 😢
they're closing because they're opening up a new chain store called 9.99 because inflation
☹️ End of an era. Thank you for all the memories!
It helped me through tough times, but when it wasn't .99 only anymore, I stopped going.
Employers expect us employees to give them a two week notice. So why don't they?! I swear, some of these corporate executives are a-holes!
Also many many employees are quitting to go to fast food restaurants for the higher pay ($20hr). I was just at the local 99 Cents store a couple of days ago for my cleaning solutions and I asked the cashier, "where is everyone at?" and she said," most employees quit for fast food jobs, now we are short-handed!" I said, "dang that sucks" and then the manager was standing there and she said, "well I have been an assistant manager here for almost 4 years and I only get $18.50 an hour". I am sorry this is just so sad for everyone...
I guess you haven't heard the news. Fast food chains are closing. They can't afford to pay that kind of hourly wage.
Yes, I have, many are and many aren't, it's horrible all the way around. I am personally going to miss Foster Freeze very much along with my local hotdog shop. The owner announced closure over a month ago stating that his employees were finding jobs elsewhere due to the pay hike. He did not need to raise his pay as he only has the one location. The Chick-fil-A here now starts at $21.50hr @@bagobeans
Five below is a lie. Almost everything is five and up. 😮
99c store got me through my childhood 😢 always loved going
