Thanks man! You know I don't give up on anything and Phillip is the same way. I can't wait to get you boys out there and put yall to work. I love you man!
The only time I've been sea sick was when we were 20+ miles off shore deep sea fishing in the gulf stream and that boat was rocking! Oh, and I was pregnant but didn't know it yet lol. I think yall just need to get the bugs worked out and you'll be dragging 'em in once the water warms up a little.
Being seasick ain't no joke. Shelly's a tough lady. I told Phillp that he would've had to take me back if I was sick like that. Shrimp or no shrimp, I don't care.
Aimee Allen I learned after the first time I got sea sick to go to the very back of the boat and and sit back there while the boat is going out or moving at anytime and to never stay in the cabin very long. The mate on my first deep sea fishing trip saw me being so sick and came over and told my parents what to do for me and it helped, plus I learned to not eat a big breakfast before going out, I am definitely thankful to the mate that taught me and my parents how to prevent it from happening again.

Phillip has been working hard on getting his boat ready. There're some things you just don't see coming until you're out there. Luckily, we didn't have to call for help and no one got hurt. We're being put through tests to make sure we can handle them. Take care.
Y’all may not have caught many but with shrimp that nice you don’t need many 😂. Great job making it work with what you have, finding little issues to solve and getting better each trip. Stay Safe!

I bet that was a cool place to be around growing up. I miss seeing the lights of the big trawlers headed out in the mornings across the marsh from our house. I'd love to go out on a big trawler for a day.
The season has been open for a couple of weeks. Everyone's having to trawl 3 miles off the coast right now. We'll be able to trawl closer to shore in about a month.
I have been sea sick once in my life when I was like 12 but never have since and I have been out fishing in 12ft + high seas. I went out everyday for 4 straight days deep sea fishing for my high school graduation trip with my parents and the first day was like 3-4 ft seas and it just got worse with each trip out but we were really catching some good fish, I haven’t been out when it was like that again since the only reason it was like that that time was because a tropical storm was moving through on down the Florida panhandle from where we were going out
When you do it will take (80)% of the work out 💪! And make sure it has a cat head to pull in the lazy line , and big bags of shrimps ! Thanks for sharing 👍
A nice catch, those shrimp were big ones. I think your boat will be a good one. Just a little tweaking to things and she will be a dandy. Love the temporary fixes. Keep the videos coming, we love them.
ANOTHER SET of ‘choke-rings’/heavy mesh tongue to lift the bag set about 4’-6’ ABOVE the bag/tail tie-rings should help you IF using a larger diameter ‘cathead’! ADDITIONALLY: why you are not making several tests with 12 ‘TEST/TRY NET so as to find the shrimp and to stay on the shrimp…making 10-minutes tries every 10-15 minutes during a 2 hour drag!!! Standard ‘test/try times’ here is southern-Louisiana inshore trawling in 10’-18’ water! Properly setup test net w/4-5 wraps on 6” diameter cathead will be hands free w/125’-135’ bridled line to test net! How many feet are your pull cables for the main net? We used 7’x36” aluminum boards on 42’-45’ trawls: body 1 3/4 # 9, extension 1 1/2” #15 and tail 1 3/8 mesh # 18 FOR WHITE SHRIMP….boards are DEFINITELY TOO SMALL-me efficient pull 40’-45’ nets! Look up UA-cam video produced by Georgia University using a 65 foot trawl boat named the “Georgia Bulldog old but very very informative…proved even that boat only opened a 50’ trawl up to 90% of its headline/floatline/topline!!!
Thanks for all the info. The doors that we were using were only 5'. My buddy had them made by a guy who said that's what he'd need for pulling the 50' net he bought. I hate he spent so much money on this setup. I think it's too much for his boat to handle. I've talked with him about it, and he's decided to go back to pulling a 35' net. I think he's boat we'll be able to cover more ground and hopefully rake up a bigger catch. While we were trawling offshore, we pulled in around 15' or so. It looks like he's got around a 100' to 125' of cable on his spool. We pulled with around a 100' of cable. From what I've read, you need to pull 5' of pull lines to every 1' of water. Does that sound correct? Pulling in 20' of water would require a 100' of pull lines. I'm having a great time learning about trawling. I absolutely love 6 I can't wait to go back. It's looking like 2' seas here off the coast on Sunday, but they're calling for 47 percent chance of rain. I want to go and try out my DRAG QUEEN so badly. I've got the shrimping fever.
@@SaltyReflections In that depth of water the formula is called ‘scope’. I would be dragging at least 150 to 165 foot of rope/cable. If your ropes are too short and added the bouncing of the waves - you’re actually bouncing the boards. The best way to check to see if the boards are sliding perfectly on the bottom… Is to spray the FLAT of the skid from the nose all the way to the back with white paint - this way you can determine if it’s nosing or if the boards are healing. There is a way to adjust for that BUT if you using aluminum boards - you spray the skids with black paint. Hopefully I can help you out a little more based on my past experiences since 1970!!!
Now this boat's more my size! 😂 A/C and everything! 😮 That's my throw-up emoji I'm a little confused. Is this your boat or Phillip's? Lots of hard work for sure. Happy you got a few nice ones!😊
This is Philip's boat. He's been working on fixing it up for trawling, too. We can't trawl nearshore right now because SCDNR hasn't opened that zone yet. I wasn't plaining on taking our boat offshore because I didn't know it would only be 15' or so deep where we'd be trawling. Our boat is not set up to trawl in over 25' of water. Philip asked us to come along with them and help out for their first trip... more hands on deck the better, especially learning new gear.
Man you guys please definitely stay safe out there God bless you and your family Love to purchase some shrimp but I'm in Virginia Will not be back to South Carolina until September Columbia
Watch this video again: THE CATHEAD on right/side of eich SHOULD BE TOTALLY USED TO pull in the “lazy-line (bag line) AND extremely important that this boat is in more of a turn than showed in the video!!! “ LAFITTE-SKIFF” style hull was originally built and crafted in Lafitte, Louisiana! PS: DEFINITELY NEED ANOTHER BILGE PUMP: water belongs on outside of boat NOT inside a boat!!!
This was our first attempt at trawling with this boat. First attempt at trawling offshore. First time using trawl winches. We were basically testing and learning more about the boat. I'm pretty sure the bilge pump wasn't working as it should until Philip removed some trash out of the impeller.😂 He needs to tighten up. The boat hasn't been back in the water since this day/video. I think my buddies are waiting on us to tag along and give them a hand. I'm ready.
LOL! You might be right about the doors but you're definitely not right about the swells. We've been on the water enough to know how big the swells are when we're out there. I hate you couldn't tell what the seas were like in the video. I'm still hoping you'll come along on more videos with us. Are you a shrimper? How do you know what size doors it takes to open a net?

I showed all the drags we made on this trip. It took us 1.5 hrs to get to the trawl area we were allowed to drag. Then the fun began. I'm keeping our videos as real as possible to share with you guys.
No such thing as ‘pull, pull, pull…trial and error…”! If you used a ’try-net/test-net’. THEN you would know whether to put out the larger trawl or not! Cannot expect to just put over the larger net and AND EXPECT to feasibly catch shrimp to be worth your expenses AND time!!! If it was that easy THEN everyone with a boat would be shrimping…🤞🤞$$$🤞🏻🤞🏻
@@SaltyReflectionsyour doing just fine your not a big gulf boat you don’t have the room for one you learn the area you fish and you put the drags in and that’s all you can do know where and when to hit these keyboard shrimpers they don’t know shit I’ve done it all my life and the set up you got is fine for what you got maybe if it was me then I’d look into skimmer style set up if you in 15 ft or less or however big of skimmers you get that’s the best way really for doing bay shrimping in shallow water but trawl is better for deep water cuz you can only go so deep with skimmers but fuck what they saying y’all doin good and also slack y’all’s bibs off putt you about 3 ft of rope between cable and bib
White shrimp run in schools they hit and they miss have a great drag for 1 hour and then you make 2-3 and it’s less than the first you just gotta put the drags in you’ll get you every bit of 6-10 baskets in a drag with that net n boat
@savanahstar556 Thanks. I see a lot of small boats trawling around us that don't use a try net. The captains of these boats trawl this area almost every day of the week. I watch these guys in our area with experience and try to mimic what they're doing. Our boat is not set up just like there's, but I think we're doing OK for a small boat. All I can say at this time is we have found the shrimp.
@SaltyReflections wow, sorry to hear that..seems like things go smooth when you start but change quickly to the bad side..we done ok this week, could have been better but we got 90 🧺 baskets of shrimp 🍤..Monday we had a rudder shaft that broke in 2 so we had to come in and get it welded..gotta it fixed actually quickly when we got to the dock..welder man was waiting on us so it worked out good..went back out and finished the week up to Thursday night then we had to come in because of tropical storm ophelia was coming Friday into Saturday so we at the house waiting it out..
Yep, that's right. It has been good shrimp quantity the last couple of weeks here too, plenty of other issues as usual with boats & gear, though. 🥴🥵🙃 Thankfully, nothing too bad.
There's another pully already there, we just weren't using it. I think the pull point on the bag is too high. We'll reattach it to a lower point so we can clear the transom. Thanks!

You're right. We're going to have to work on adding a try-net to help us find the location of the shrimp.
This is her husband btw not her lol
Too big of net for a little boat
Yes, I think you're right. We've changed it out for a 35' net. My buddy hasn't tried it since this day.
A lot of small boats in our area pull 35' nets. This boat is powered by a Cummins diesel engine, and it pulls a 35' net easily.
I bet the shrimping was not good
Yep, like the title says, everything went wrong! 🙄
Put you a nother pulley up there make it a lot easier to empty your bag
There's another pully already there, we just weren't using it. I think the pull point on the bag is too high. We'll reattach it to a lower point so we can clear the transom. Thanks!
Lol,slow down a notch
What is the ideal speed?
I think Shelly is about to lose her lunch
She lost her lunch, breakfast and everything from the day before. I felt so sorry for her.
I have Vertigo so..🤮🤢🤮
Thanks for coming trawling!
@@SaltyReflections enjoyed it as I do all your videos ! Stay Safe out there..
@@garywalton7176 Thanks brother! Take care and stay safe.
Like your videos but u film almost your whole pull, waste u should show pulling up net dumping the tail picking and stop filming until next pul and so on half your video is nothing boring sorry to tell you that but let's get some good footage of SC shrimping
Thanks. I'll keep your thoughts in mind. Thanks for the encouragement.
Your towing to fast
Thanks for the info. What is the ideal speed?
@@SaltyReflections ideal speed for trawling is 1.5 to 2.5 mph
Thanks. We typically pull 2-2.5 mph.
@@SaltyReflections good pace
