There's two factions for this. The one with, they tend to have more sharper images with strong lines sometimes while the one without, it's more like pastel drawing.
The point of forbidding black while teaching is to decrease your reliance on it, as black will take over a drawing and is best used sparsely. Instead, focusing on achieving dark areas through blending multiple colors will help you learn the importance of it and see the parts that ACTUALLY need black, as opposed to layering black in every spot that has a shadow
I didn't know about using black, but I've done most of this myself. I can see the appeal of the white pencil but I've never actually minded the alleged cheap colored pencil look.
I always use the white pencil to blend.. OR I use prismacolor's colorless blender pencil which is really nice as well. The main thing, I've never tried, was changing directions of the pencil marks.. I always went the same directions which is probably why some of my realistic pieces came off as streaky
Oh yeah I like my colorless blender but I rarely use it for much, I guess I could try it for what he suggests. Changing directions was something I used to do because when I first learned to color, my very first standard of quality were the screensaver desktops from the sonic & knuckles collection on PC and those look very airbrush-y so I had to guess my way through making my work look more airbrushed than penciled in. Even used to go so far as to erase the lines and retrace them with the pencil color.
This is a sorta old video, so I doubt you'll see this, but a quick tip : when sharpening Prismacolor Colored Pencils, turn the sharpener, not the pencil itself. This helps to keep the soft core, or the tip from breaking.
I remember when I did art in school people would ask how to make skin colour and the teacher was fed up of saying red, yellow, white so she said "fried egg with ketchup" meaning a glob of white, a bit of yellow and some red
free vbuckz well skin colour I believe in art supplies colour is for white as it we truly call the name of the skin colour of people black peoples are brown what it the name for white skin If we use those paints colour sheet you get from diy stores skin colours are in the white ,tan , pink , yellow and brown sets so yeah
I also suggest buying a small set of maybe 12 pencils and only using that set when colouring. I was afraid of playing around a little with the pencils that I got already, but using a limited palette really gets you thinking creative and suddenly you have so much more pleasing and colourful drawings than you had before!
I like having a small palette because if it's too big it's overwhelming for me I'd rather limit it to actually master colours before going crazy with more colours
Actually, No. Considering most are doing it by digital very few is doing it by color pencil. Myself is doing it with color pencil and acrylic paint. Wouldn't this be considered as cheating? haha
Oh my gosh, thank you for this, Jazza! I'm more of a traditional artist and still struggle with coloring in colored pencil but this just opened up so many doors for me. You do a great job in all of your tutorial videos and I look up to you as one of my favorite artists! Again, thank you so much for this!
there are some tips that you could do to make the colours blend better and make it more smooth, using a colourless blender by prismer or you can use white spirit as that blends it quite nice as well and it a cheaper than prismers but use its sparingly in small circulor motions
ok ok... explanation: in the USA, colour is spelled 'color'. however, in Australia and the UK, colour is spelled 'colour'. the joke is that Jazza, although being Australian, used the US spelling of colour for his presumably American audience. You're welcome :D
Just bought the 120 pack of Faber-Castell Polychromos for college, can't wait to try them. I've always just used pencil and ink, but have been looking to add color.
This was EXACTLY what I needed. I bought a pack of Prismacolor coloured pencils around a year ago but have barely touched them, even though I've been longing to use them for ages. The issue was that I had no idea how to use them, but with this tutorial, I think I'm gonna give it a shot. Thank you so much, Jazza!!
This was put up at perfect timing! I just got some colored pencils for Christmas, because I wanted to dabble in them and see if I like them more than alcohol markers. When I tried them the first time I found I couldn’t blend as easily as I could with markers. This will really help me improve! You probably won’t see this, but thank you Jazza!
I just bought (another)a pack of colored pencils today before stumbling upon this video, they are my favorite to work with so thanks for this! Beautifully colored page.
Hey there, I originally watched this video about three months ago when I was getting into colouring in with pencils. Your video was the first one that taught me anything about lowlights and highlights. It's the entire reason I started researching artist grade pencils and started exploring art more seriously. I just wanted to drop by and say thank you, because now I've expanded out into drawing and all kinds of arty things since the start of the year :)
3:43 I have just recently learned this on my own. My shading felt very flat and after a while |I figured it was because my highlights were off. Eventually I realised up doing value studies that objects rarely have a pure white highlight (mostly talking about cloth here, less so with super shiney objects, but even then there may be a very subtle tint to the highlight). So now I have changed the way I render things. Adding a different hue to the highlight is not something I have tried, however (I have done it to shadows), so I'll give that a go.
This helped me SOOO much jazza, thank you. I had gotten some prismacolor colored pencils for Christmas and this has helped with technique in the end, the final product. I love what you do and are doing. Keep it up and thanks for the inspiration.😊
I have a question a bit of a question. Usually we are told not to shade shadows in black (I've been told this by both digital artists and by traditional artists, both students and my art teachers), as even in real life shadows are not black (sometimes not even if it's a black piece of clothing), so I'm kind of curious as to why you chose to? Was this a situation of "knowing the rules and knowing how to break them" ?
Azure Seahorse now I am absolutely no expert, I might be 100% wrong, I rarely colour, but here is my explanation Jazza has a very definitive style with bold strokes and strong colours, so he uses the black to make it POP, also he uses different shades which is something he emphasizes throughout the vid, if begginer artists were shown how to use black without first showing how to use shades and different colours, their art might suffer and become not as dynamic as it could of been, its sorta like walking before you run, so when you do run, you really hit your stride
kitty cat true true. And i do understand that. But again I've been told to not use black (by multiple levels of artist people, because I do this for a living as well) because "it can look tacky and un-natural as nothing in nature is shaded with black" most people get suggested to shade using contrasting colours and avoid shading in black. That being said, I'm not against people doing it and Jazza is also an experienced artist as well and his style of art is geared toward western cartoons and they use heavy black shading so it makes sense I guess, I was just unsure whether it was a good idea since so often art professionals say to not do it and this video was titled as "How colour with pencils like a pro". But i do also accept that it most likely is a style choice as well and possibly a "when you know the rules you know how to break and bend them"
This really helps a lot. I'm always using colored pencils and I've got a big art project I'm working on at school that I plan to color the entire thing with colored pencils. I'm glad to know there is helpful tutorials for detailed coloring ;) great vid!
I've been using pencils for years, and there's a few tips that I didn't think about such as blending with a white pencil. Goes to show you to stay humble and know that there's always something new to learn. Cheers
I will experiment with my pencils using these techniques! thanks for another wonderful tutorial Jazza! I use the technique of using white to smooth the texture, so cool to find I use a tactic you do!
Good video! Another tip would be that you can use a colorless blender pencil to blend and it won't lighten your colors like the white pencil will. Depending on the effect you're going for you can use both. You can also use other colors to blend and burnish together. For instance, I drew a toucan in colored pencil, toucans have a bluish purple tint but they look black, so what I did was lay down some purple and blue as a base then went over it in black and then blended it out with a dark blue pencil. The bird then looked black but didn't just look like a solid black blob with a beak it had contrast and color. Blending can be used as lighting as well. For instance, I use my cream colored pencil to blend out light areas on darker things without it going to white because lots of lights aren't white and the cream color gives a slightly yellow tint to the lighting. Just some extra stuff for people to think about!
Thanks for the tips! I am finally trying out colored pencils after many years of blatantly avoiding them and sticking to paints and pastels, so this video was really helpful!
The only coloring I've ever been able to really get into is with colored pencils, so this video is so so helpful. Thank you bunches for the tips and tricks!
i have to thank you so much for this tutorial, Jazza! i've been looking all over on how to color with pencils, and sure while this may have been with prismacolor pencils, and all i have are zebra color pencils, it still really helps me out! :D so thank you so much for talking about how to color in, instead of just talking about color in general and such.

I usually avoid black too but mainly because it scares me haha !
Azure Seahorse now I am absolutely no expert, I might be 100% wrong, I rarely colour, but here is my explanation
Jazza has a very definitive style with bold strokes and strong colours, so he uses the black to make it POP, also he uses different shades which is something he emphasizes throughout the vid, if begginer artists were shown how to use black without first showing how to use shades and different colours, their art might suffer and become not as dynamic as it could of been, its sorta like walking before you run, so when you do run, you really hit your stride
I used to not use it but I think I like the use of complementary colors now
Azure Seahorse the black smears a LOT if you’re using layers and plan on going over them again.
kitty cat true true. And i do understand that. But again I've been told to not use black (by multiple levels of artist people, because I do this for a living as well) because "it can look tacky and un-natural as nothing in nature is shaded with black" most people get suggested to shade using contrasting colours and avoid shading in black. Another tip would be that you can use a colorless blender pencil to blend and it won't lighten your colors like the white pencil will. Depending on the effect you're going for you can use both.
