@@windy8544 But....that wasn't backhanded. That was just a compliment. Sarah even said herself she never uses markers as the main component in her coloring pages, but that since it was marker paper she was "going to challenge herself" to use mainly markers.
To be honest ..back lighting the character was a great idea ..but what made it look way better was the dark background which made it feel like it is a dark room and as though the light is coming from behind ...Great job !!
I mean, everyone's style is totally different with alcohol markers but when I'm doing light toned open space or blocks of pure color, I find that if you use a very light marker and go over the space over and over again, the markers don't streak. It's really easy with brush tips, and - unpopular opinion here - the less saturated the pigment in the alcohol, the easier it is to a) make a solid, unbroken block, and b) build up intensity (unless your goal is an extremely saturated color, then: intense pigment all the way). That said, much like you can use a white colored pencil to smooth out gradients in tricky spots, you can also use the more unsaturated markers (in the same color family, mind) to even out blending if you're doing delicate shading with alcohol markers. This is also a good way to add subtle highlights of color to areas which /reflect/ light. Im gonna stop now, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. More importantly, I love the way the drawing turned out! I don't think you ruined it at all, the shading is pretty intense but with such a focus on light and shadow and a super saturated color palate? I honestly think that the risk was worth it. 👍

I’d love to do her better and make her skin really beautiful if that were the plan- I’d rather it be intentional than just an accidental cover up for my bad shadows! But I do like your sentiment and I might do my next queen with a darker tone ❤️

I find it very nice. I like your creation process. I'm like you. I often don't really know how a coloring will look like until it's finished. That's half the fun!
Strangely enough, that color palette immediately reminds me of Fiona from Shrek hehehe! 😆 Nice finished coloring page nonetheless, I love the gradients, shadows, and lighting, and I'm primarily interested in pure solid and flat colors. 😀
Ok so first off…. Thank you so much for showing your entire process and not editing what you didn’t like. I am trying to learn coloring and shaving and Queen i first saw the skin i didn’t like it but after you added the background it all came together. I am learning that shading is more than just a dark shadow. Watching you bring this together was amazing.
I quite like the marker trails in the background. I know it's not standard for an artist to leave trails like that in the background, but I'm a woodworker. One of the things in woodworking that pleases me the most, is seeing the tool marks of the hand tool woodworker in the final piece. It gives you a little bit of history, but also reminds you that somebody worked their hands to the Bone to create the amazing piece you're feasting your eyes on. I think you did a wonderful job, and it's amazing that you pushed yourself beyond your comfort zone to learn something new!
I purchased several boxes of those marker trays (from Amazon) years ago and are the best way to store alcohol markers. It was a smart idea for Jazza to include them with his markers.

There was a point there where it seemed like it was going to plummet but then you completely saved it with the background and the changes you did there. It looks pretty awesome! Thanks!
@@SarahRenaeClark it's a mighty fine creative process! I'm really enjoying the videos on your channel. I'm just learning now about coloured pencils and colouring in general. You have many interesting lessons here. Not-related but your channel reminds me of Mary Spender's channel (and that's a good thing!).
I've worked a lot with alcohol markers and the best way I've found to create an area of smooth color, large or small, is to completely saturate the paper with the marker. It will make the marker area darker when wet, but it marker ink usually dries lighter. You are a gifted artist, so keep making those mistakes. I think your skin did become much darker than what you were aiming for, but I think it works. Pale skin tends to get ashy-blond shadows. So happy to see you using the blue in the shadows! It was one of the main things I learned in art school--some people have dark blue in their skin shadows and some have a dark green. I mean we even call an entire range of skin colors for it; olive complexion is called that for a reason. But you're doing great and it's really good to see you making mistakes on camera because it shows people that art just doesn't spring out our fingers beautiful every time. I love your channel; keep up the great work.
I actually just saw where Jazza used this picture in his videos. It was the one comparing alcohol markers with water-based markers. Amazing how differently you interpreted it! Same coloring page, but two completely different styles and vibes. Wonderful job!
You show us everyday how to step out of our comfort zones and go for it. The only suggestion I can offer it this, I always make 1 or 2 copies of a page I'm going to color Before I ever touch any color to any page
What I always do to cover larger areas with markers is I apply either colorless blender or just 99% alcohol to the paper, wetting the whole surface. This way the ink can blend and slide around way easier, for very smooth marker blending you always need a lot of ink.
Thank you Sarah, for showing us what could have been considered as failure in respect to the different expectations you had. It is very discouraging seeing perfect pieces from UA-camrs and not seeing things that turned out less good than a perfect coloring page. I especially loved the fact you haven't viewed this as a failure and embraced the outcome of the challenge as a different approach with grace and dignity. I'm not as talented as you or Jezza, but I've definitely learned from this video a lot. So thank you for being refreshing and honest in your approach.
Just want to say thank you. Your videos have made me excited about art again. Seeing your process and how much you are learning is making me want to dive back in.
I really appreciate you being honest about your process, it makes art seem much more approachable for people who are new, or who haven't touched "fine art" in a long time (me being the latter). It's really inspiring, thank you
Watching your videos are fun and a chance to learn. You take risk and let use know it's ok.! Mistakes happen to everyone and I own that brand of markers but have yet to use them. I will keep watching your videos and learning new things to help with my coloring hobby.
Your work is amazing and I love how you talk through all of your process even embracing when you feel it’s not quite going right. I came from your collaboration with Jazza and I love your channel and just subscribed straight away. Now to watch more of your videos.
I *adore* this piece, not just because it's so lovely, but because it's reminding me how important it is to give yourself the chance to be brave and try something that may not work out, because how else will you know? And either way, the process is as important as the end result. Your attitude and encouragement is so motivating: time trying something new, even if it doesn't work out, isn't time wasted, especially if you get to chill a bit with some lovely art supplies! It's so easy to get caught up in the end result, so thank you for creating such a lovely creative space here, where I can go to remind myself exactly why I love colouring so much. Excuse me while I go binge your back catalogue with some tea and colouring pages in hand. 💖
I feel backlit artworks are so difficult and risky to do but can pay off really well. It still looks great, maybe looking at references and darkening certain features more. She feels dark skinned and sorta went flat again but I think that's the difficulty with backlit subjects. You did great pushing your skills
Thank you for showing us that you weren't 100% happy about this (although it's stunning to me!). I'm so amazed at your shading (especially the green and gold) so am glad I subbed. But seeing you say that you're not sure about bits, or that you feel you made a mistake is very refreshing and encouraging. Def gonna keep watching your stuff!
I really likes the risk you took with the back light effect! It changes the perspective from a posing queen, to a queen having an intimate moment with her pet bird. I actually like the art piece much better now!
Congratulations!👏 The drawing according to the concept was left with a unique touch and it seems that the princess has a plan next to the background it gives her a feeling of mystery 💯 I like to see your coloring process and little by little I have learned many tips and if I see that the support or paper depending on the material is what helps to give good results. Jazza's surprise of materials was great to continue painting great ideas 😀
I love this video! I love that you showed the challenging side of this... the finished piece looks stunning... it's just really reassuring for a beginner like me to see the whole process, even the parts you felt unsure of. I have a TON of colouring books and I'm seeing that colouring in is a very real skill and talent. I'll certainly be watcjinh more of your videos so I can learn to bring a picture to life as well.
I love Jazza's new box! And it was fabulous seeing the both of you working together on a video it would be great to see more in the future 😊 I really liked what you did with your page I think it kind helped change the perception of what kind of character they might be to the viewer, which I sometimes find hard to do in my art. At first with the colours the colours reflect a good, noble queen gazing upon her beautiful bird but as you darken those shadows she has the potential to be a menacing, deceitful and up to no good queen plotting against her enemies. I really liked it 😍😍😍 I look forward to seeing your next video stay safe and well ☺️
You explored, took a risk and learned... You might not be satisfied but now you know and this is the hard part of art... Be kind to yourself. I think you did an amazing job !
Hi! I’m loving your videos! At first,I thought the piece was ruined and you weren’t going to be able to bring it back but you absolutely did! I know it wasn’t your original vision but that happens so often in art - you start off with one idea and then end up somewhere else entirely. I think this turned out beautiful in the end!
If I recall correctly, the queen character is from Jazza's own how to color with colored pencil tutorial many years back, though I'm not sure. If I end up right though, it would be a fun coincidence that Sarah decided to color the queen since her main medium are pencils. 😂😂😂
I was wondering how you were going to return around the blue face, but you did it and I don’t think she’s ruined, she’s beautiful, and you rarely see pictures like this backlit like that, it’s unique and you battles through it and won! Thanks for continuing to show us your struggles and learning, keeping it real really helps us at home who are still learning 🙂🦋💕
I found you through Jazza's video of the coloring collaboration you guys did, and you have quickly become my favorite UA-cam artist! You've inspired me to pick up my art supplies and start creating again after months of doing next to nothing art-wise. Thank you so much!!! Keep being you :D
Tbh, i think the queen simply looks dark-skinned in the end, but still with that back lighting giving the highlights - and I think she's overall beautiful. The options for Jazza's beard are a favourite 😆 What a fun and inspiring video!
Failures are learning experience And really make us humble I'm really surprised by your guts Which really made me motivated to go ahead and push myself out of the comfort zone
I colored this page digitally awhile back and have it in my Instagram and had tweeted Jazza about it. I really like your gold trim and wish I had thought of it myself. The technique of applying a black base and going over with the green marker is a great tip I’ll log away for the future. Lighting from the behind and darkening her skin was a bold move but I think you did a great job bringing it together. Nice work!
Amazing depth and lighting creation! 👏👏 I think she needs a brighter lipstick, but that's personal choice!! 💄 I've never been able to do shading and markers are my least favorite art supply. You made it look simple and much more interesting!👍
Shading the skin darker was a good choice. It looks much better to me. Might be a tad too dark but it was much better and the backlight adds a lot of depth. Good job!
Solid color backgrounds are quite difficult to create with alcohol markers. It can be done but paper has so much to do with the final results, always keeping your leading edge wet and working across your field of view is important. I tend to create a mottled or fuzzy background like a photo using a telephoto lens, vague out of focus blobs of colors to create depth and interest in your main subject. I like how you created the gold and believe that you have created a successful illustration. Sometimes I have to leave it to the client and if I have made them happy and fulfilled my brief I gotta believe that it is a win! I have made some very beautiful artworks, I am not sure about any of them being perfect, not even what was in my minds eye when I started, but we are our own harshest critics. Be proud of yourself and your art.
So excited to get my box :). I’ve not used alcohol markers before but been super interested for a long time! I’m not artistic enough to draw my own pictures but am excited to colour Jazza’s images!
Ohh I love the dramatic lighting, although I was totally screaming at the tv telling you to stop😂❤️🙌 but I really like how it turned out, so I’m glad you didn’t hear me.
I wish I had this kit back in art school. I can't afford them now but i own similar (just not as great quality) from my art supplies i got when beginning school. Since I can't get the kit, I'll settle for watching you use these mediums cuz your coloring and art is so inspirational.
I'm so glad you collabed with jazza, because now I'm binge watching all of your videos lol! I love your content, because I'm trying to get better with markers, pencils, and watercolors. That and I love Ariel, Aladdin, and all things disney. I'm actually really into collecting marvel/DC sketch cards, and have started making my own commissions. So I definitely need help on shading and lighting with characters. I just have smaller scale to do it on.
This was so great to watch! I loved hearing your thought process and how you took risks! (personally I think it really paid off, even if the skin tone is a bit too brown so it looks more like she's a different race rather than having the face in the shadow. I would have been incapable of doing it any better though so ... I might have done the bird and the cape a lighter colour to bring more contrast, but overall I love how it turned out!)
You did fantastic! I would much rather see you trying to make your pieces more dynamic then keeping it simple. I think she turned out very well if a bit more tan then you were planning. Great job! 👏
Sarah, I know I couldn’t have done this. I think you did an amazing job. I struggle with skin tones myself. I do think the skins tone matched her hair, but overall Great job. Mistakes make us better
I super appreciate sharing something you might consider a little less than perfect. That’s how art goes sometimes! I would say a secondary fill light source for her facial features might have helped balance the back light but you took a risk and that’s how we all learn. Thanks for sharing!
Hey only recently subbed to your channel, you're approach to art projects is similar to my own, I do a project (a lot of the time for friends) and I literally trying something out for the first time with that project and its amazing when it turns out well sometimes when i'm not expecting it to. I think that is what happened with this piece, you tried something new and not everything went perfectly but if someone gave that end result to me and I knew nothing of the process behind the making of it, I would be super impressed well done :)

It's so easy to get caught up in the end result, so thank you for creating such a lovely creative space here, where I can go to remind myself exactly why I love colouring so much. Excuse me while I go binge your back catalogue with some tea and colouring pages in hand. 💖
Your abilities to pivot when things don't go as planned is truly inspiring. I think the piece turned out really pretty
I appreciate you uploading this even though you it didn't turn out the way you expected/wanted. I respect you for that!
Congratulations!👏 The drawing according to the concept was left with a unique touch and it seems that the princess has a plan next to the background it gives her a feeling of mystery 💯
I like to see your coloring process and little by little I have learned many tips and if I see that the support or paper depending on the material is what helps to give good results.
Jazza's surprise of materials was great to continue painting great ideas 😀
You did great, Sarah! I LOVE that you didn’t give up. 😊
The drawing looks spectacular👍👍 and I think markers are the best thing in the box🤔
Followed you over from seeing your colab with jazza and i in awe, and what ypu do is awesome!
If I recall correctly, the queen character is from Jazza's own how to color with colored pencil tutorial many years back, though I'm not sure.
If I end up right though, it would be a fun coincidence that Sarah decided to color the queen since her main medium are pencils. 😂😂😂
the queen is from jazza's pencil video a few years ago, called "How to COLOR with PENCILS like a PRO!"
@@mcsporran2305 Yey! I was right! :D
Yes yes and the original lineart was done for a collaboration between him and Baylee Jae
Yes! I remember that one!
I want to hunt down Jazza queen video now
Love watching you do your art!
Holy cow, that dress looks amazing
Thank you!!
Tbh, i think the queen simply looks dark-skinned in the end, but still with that back lighting giving the highlights - and I think she's overall beautiful. The options for Jazza's beard are a favourite 😆 What a fun and inspiring video!
The dress turned out sooooo good❤️❤️❤️
You really challenged yourself girl ✨
Love it how you do new challenges ❤ and loved how you scared Jazza 😂😂✨✨💗💗💗 Loads of love
Failures are learning experience
And really make us humble
I'm really surprised by your guts
Which really made me motivated to go ahead and push myself out of the comfort zone
I was nervous at first but I think you got it there and it was really interesting and I loved the end result.
Most entertaining art UA-camrs ever 🥶🐐🐐✅
I colored this page digitally awhile back and have it in my Instagram and had tweeted Jazza about it. I really like your gold trim and wish I had thought of it myself. The technique of applying a black base and going over with the green marker is a great tip I’ll log away for the future. Lighting from the behind and darkening her skin was a bold move but I think you did a great job bringing it together. Nice work!
Looked stunning Sarah 😍 Just amazing seeing the picture transform .
You are an amazing artist 💜💜💜
you're so lucky that you get to use it so early! it looks so amazing! I can't wait for mine to arrive :D
So excited to get my box :). I’ve not used alcohol markers before but been super interested for a long time! I’m not artistic enough to draw my own pictures but am excited to colour Jazza’s images!
I think it turned out great!
Another brilliant art lesson! Thank you
Ohh I love the dramatic lighting, although I was totally screaming at the tv telling you to stop😂❤️🙌 but I really like how it turned out, so I’m glad you didn’t hear me.
Oh, we've all been in a place where we think we should've stopped but you totally saved the piece 👏🏻🔥
I wish I had this kit back in art school. I can't afford them now but i own similar (just not as great quality) from my art supplies i got when beginning school. Since I can't get the kit, I'll settle for watching you use these mediums cuz your coloring and art is so inspirational.
You're really good and inspiring. I'm subscribing to your channel right now, Sarah.
I love the big risk big reward!
I ordered my own box and I am hyped!!!!!
Thanks for sharing!
once u added the background it felt more united
Hey only recently subbed to your channel, you're approach to art projects is similar to my own, I do a project (a lot of the time for friends) and I literally trying something out for the first time with that project and its amazing when it turns out well sometimes when i'm not expecting it to. I think that is what happened with this piece, you tried something new and not everything went perfectly but if someone gave that end result to me and I knew nothing of the process behind the making of it, I would be super impressed well done :)
