The daddy of all Grand daddies. The Legend Satyajit Ray.He was a versatile genius. Was a fantastic director, author, music director, illustrator etc. The whole Ray family was full of genius.
Satyajit Roy was the greatest film maker lndia has ever produced. Each and every of his films is a masterpiece.
Ray
World has ever produced rather
@@prasenjitbag5248he is an imposing legend but world's greatest? Not by a mile!
That heavy baritone voice, that 6' 4" imposing height, that serious demeanor. You just need to put a cat in his lap and he would be a better Godfather than Brando. (Just kidding, guys!)
haha
I can TOTALLY see him killing the Godfather role
Ray rejected Brando as a main character in his film
His height baritone doesn't matter
What matters is his artistic vision
Hence we bengalis have
Satyajit Ray extremely tall
Rittik Ghatak average height
Mrinal Sen Below average height
Pierre André Boutang in 1989 interviewed Satyajit Ray. Those series of interviews were amazing too.
How sensible and wise those people are.. And what a time he had...
Referring to your comment on "Jaws", I hope you realise that Spielberg stole Ray's script about an alien landing in rural bengal titled "The Alien" and turned it into two films: First encounters and ET. Due to his age and heart condition and the amount of running around that would be involved if he sued Spielberg, Arthur C. Clarke advised Ray not to pursue legal recourse. Which is what he did. Spielberg tried to atone by pressing for a "Lifetime Achievement Academy" for Ray, but that's not nearly enough, I believe.
Well, it is difficult to infer, if Spielberg “stole” the script of “The Alien”. One thing is for sure is the obvious similarities between “The Alien” and “ET”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Spielberg stole it. At that time the Script of “The Alien” was available in European market and fell into the Spielberg’s screenwriter. As for Spielberg pressing for Ray’s lifetime achievement academy award, it was mot true. It was Martin Scorsese who had pushed ahead with his support of Ray’s lifetime achievement Academy awards. Spielberg has always avoided talking about Ray, whereas Scorsese, Wes Anderson and a few others drive have talked about his greatness.
The Music Room (Jalsaghar) and The Big City (Mahanagar) are my two favorite Satyajit Ray films.
The Music Room (Jalsaghar) is undoubtedly one of my top favourites as well. A true masterpiece and poetry in motion. I didn't know that a film about a stubborn, entitled old man would move and resonate with me this much but it did!!
What a good-looking man! What a baritone...and such a talenthouse!!!
He was an Institution himself ❤ god level personality for us Indians.
In case you are not aware, before Spielberg made ET, Satyajit wrote a story on which a script was written long before ET was made and then he sent it to Columbia pictures to get the funding and technical support to make the film. But he nnever heard from them. Long after Spielberg made the film almost on the same line changing bit to suit American line of thought and never mentioned Ray. No acknowledgment. Ray told in an French interview. It is on youtube. Do watch
Banku babur bandhu written By Mr Ray...
@@tanushrimandal377yes in English that is named as "The Alien"
BEcause nobody else could think of a movie with an alien arriving to Earth in it.
"HIROK RAJAR DESHE" one of the best of his film which still relates today's system of politics
And yes, the english speaking Indians of those times had a heavily british accent because they were taught by the Brits in school. Listen to Ambedkar, Nehru and other leaders in politics, religion, etc and you'll see the same trend! Sometimes my grandparent's english astonishes me as classier than the trash we speak today. Lol
Thats right, however exception here is Ray went to Ballygunge Government School and that is a Bengali medium school, where all teachers were native Indian. He developed his English speaking skills from BBC radio. He wrote this somewhere ( so far I remember in his book " Amar Chelebela" - My Childhood.)
For me "Aguntuk " is the best movie of satyajit Ray...I can relate to it on many levels..
Satyajit Roy সত্যজিৎ রায়
Goosebumps
What a intellectual visualizer, film like ashini sanketh, charulata, Pather Panchali still classic!
Oh!!!!!!!! I can listen to him for h-o-u-r-s.....What a personality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow...never heard any of his interviews..thanks for playing this video
One of the legends of 20th century . I have watched all his movies & have read all his books . Lucky to be a Bengali .
No doubt, Mr.Ray is a great personality in any era.
He was a genius.... Just a ...genius.
10:00 Korbin, just a correction. Sven Nykvist was the regular cinematographer of the great Ingmar Bergman and both of them were Swedish. I am a little surprised that they haven't seen 'Through a Glass Darkly', one of Bergman's best films.
Yes i'm surprised as well. As well versed as educated as they are in cinema, its a surprise they haven't seen it. Fun fact Through a Glass Darkly (1961) won an Oscar for best foreign language film. I believe every cinema lover should watch Ingmar Bergman's films. He is to Sweden what Satyajit Ray is to India.
They're making a film on the making of Pather Panchali. It's called APARAJITO (2022). The teaser is out, and they're targeting his birthday for the release. Please do that.
i was about to type this comment..glad you mentioned it..
Thank God finally I asked u guys for this about 1 year ago!
The best works come out of hardships, make a master craftsman in every sense of the word😀
This is the first time I saw this interview. God knows why I missed. Thanks for that. I saw Jaws in 1981 in Calcutta I suppose.
Next should be 'Jalsaghar'/ The Music Room. One of my absolute favourites
I second this. Ray's movies are all treasures and gems, but there's something about Jalsaghar and the great Chhabi Biswas ji.
I'm proud to be Bengali and to be Indian ❤
I can't get over the fact that Rick thinks he is a know it all guy but actually it's Korbin who might knows a thing or two about cinema.
Please react to Hindi Movie "SHATRANJ KE KHILADI" BY Satyajit Ray BASED ON HOW Britain CAPTURED North INDIA. voice done by Mr.Bacchan. & Actor Sanjeev Kumar another Icon.
This is coming from a Marathi:
Ray is one more in a long series of Bengalis who made India ‘India’. Really proud of that part of my country
🙏🙏🙏
Nowadays every bengali is being called Bangladeshi that too by Bihari immigrants in Bengal, and they are still alive, I am sure they don't have the guts to call Marathis by offensive names in Maharashtra but we Bengalis are lacking the spine to teach them that they are in the land of Bengalis
No now a days u r celebrated if you are a money hungry fuckall Marwari or Gujarati. Suddenly it seems having your own business is the only thing celebrated in India… even the greatest cardiologist is basically working for a business man who is most probably a marwari or a Gujarati who is taking 80% profit in to their own pocket and giving 20% to the people who are working hard to make them successful
His voice!!!
Well, words coming from a legend sure have such effect on the listeners. And that's your normal reaction.
Yay..! I was waiting for this reaction since so long! Thanks guys !
What ever he says, gives us something to learn
Please watch Aparajito trailer directed by Anit Datta... This movie is based on making of Pather panchali .. This movie is masterpiece
The legends from West bengal represent India all over the world Satayjit Ray first ever oscar for India, Rabindranth Tagore, Kishore kumar, Rd burman, Manna dey, Kumar sanu, Shreya ghoshal, Shaan, Arijit Singh, Saurav Ganguly etc...
Kumar Sanu.......what? You serious
@@jackstraton1 yeah, he is Bengali. His actual name is actually Sanu Kumar Bhattacharya.
@@abx9056 Kedarnath Bhattacharya
He has British accent because his education and upbringing happened under the British administration of Bengal presidency.
The exception here is Ray went to a Bengali medium ( Ballygunge Govt School). He wrote that his English speaking skills has lot to do with his habit to listening BBC radio.
@@tanmaybasu10 thank you for the info bro👍
Very insightful
The legend 🤩😃😇👌

Do watch 'the golden fortress' (Sonar kella in bengali).. it's the detective film written & made by Satyajit Ray..

RAY.....GODFATER OF THE WORLD CINEMA......NOT ONLY CINEMA...HE WAS A POLYMATH...6'4.5 INCH HEIGHT WITH BIG BARITONE VOICE.....MY ONLY INSPIRATION......GURUDEV.....
You should see Jalshaghar. Which as per me is the best Ray film.
You are not alone.
Satyajit Ray has many of his speeches transcribed and translated into English and published in book form!
You should watch Satyajit Ray being interviewed by Pierre Andre Boutang. It is suuuperrrb.
He is one of the greatest filmmakers in the world
Short film 'Anukul', please, which is based on Ray's writings. Ta.
It is also a Sujoy Ghosh Flim
Good film but too much change from the original story.
classy man
This is bengal cinemas golden time and now bengal cinema very much down even bollywood are better than us
I was watching this video yesterday only, Wow!!!
Nice I am from india
Please react to the trailer of "Aparajito" , biopic of Satyajit Ray
Renaissance Man ! That's him.

JAWS came out in 1975. JAWS 2 came out in 1978.
Jaws might have released in India in 1978.
@@lodalega9674 no, movies are released not THAT far in different countries. It was released in 1975 in India as well.
@@MadanChikna maybe,maybe not.
@@lodalega9674 please check it online. It released on 26th December 1975 in India as well as USA.
Guys do checkout the trailer to Aparajito, it's a near orientation of the making of the movie of the same name by Satyajit Ray.
There are Commercial Films ,there are Art Films and there are Satyajit Ray Films....Unlike other good directors on the block back then Ray always praised Commercial Movies.....He said and i quote'' There are no Commercial films or Art Films ...There are just Good Films and Bad Films.....Each one of his movies feels like a movie for the mass but is stylized in the possible Art Form.....No wonder he predicted Jaw's success in India ...Star Wars probably caught the imagination of Indians more in the 90's than in the 80's ...Absolute Genius .....with due respect to Orson Welles ,Stanley Kubrick and others ..... Chaplin,Akira Kurasawa and Ray are the GOATS of Movie Making ...
It’s such a pity that Indian cinema has not progressed much since then. The good to bad films ratio is like 1:999. We as a audience have not evolved much too n we r still enjoying the nonsensical movies which Bollywood (khans, Kapoors) , South Indian (RRR, KGF, Bahubali) make. Malayalam n Tamil industries are trying their best with their story oriented movies but we still aren’t there yet. To reach to the level of Hollywood or Korean standards and technology the Indian filmmaker’s should quickly evolve n change their thought process drastically.
If your implication that Indian Cinema has not progressed much since, then I must say that is questionable, since regarding what ? Story, technology or something else. Also why compare to Hollywood or another movie industry, in fact they themselves have their big blockbuster similar to the Indian cinema, and both celebrate those movie in the similar way. Also on a different note movies can be intuitive, Intriguing and altering, but not all movies have to be the greatest out there or the post surreal experience you've had.
Aww shut up....Korean cinema?? Ha ha ha ha...just because of a few Oscar nominations, right?? There were better films made in Bengali cinema in the 50s & 60s than were made anywhere else in Europe or the Americas. It's a pity that the rest of India had absolutely no inkling of those films. And I am not talking about the Mrinal Sens, the Rays and Ghataks. They weren't born out of vacuum. Stop being so self-deprecating all the time......or worse still, being such a kiss-arse.
It's a big joke if you think that Indian cinema has not progressed.
Sid here it comes , our very own PR people working for bullywood👍

That is a posh British accent. You only get them from attending the right schools
He attended a Bengali medium school. I am sure his English was mostly self taught
He went to Ballygunge Government School, which is a Bengali medium school. He developed his English speaking skill from BBC radio.
This man belongs to that incredible pantheon of Bengali icons, e.g. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Rabindra Nath Tagore et al., which Bengal has failed to produce for many decades now. There has been a conspicuous decline in Bengali intelligentsia. Sometimes it is difficult to believe that they were real.
Bengalies are busy proving their citizenship and patriotism for a country that deliberately picks out on them , seeking validation from people that have since decades looked down on them, sabotaged them, humiliated, belittled and still do it even today.. Mere lip service of "we respect bengalies" mean nothing infront of the reality. Meanwhile Bengalies remain complacent and keep on looking for faults within themselves. Why are u surprised with the "decline" in limelight then? Satyajit Ray warned of it. Opportunities, Resources and Capital has been stripped off of bengalies conveniently. So why the surprise?
If bengalies had understood him instead of worshipping him, there would be a difference. Besides, I wouldn't say there is a complete dissolution of intelligentsia. It's just that Delhi centric hindi imperialist media doesn't show it much. They ignore Bengali scientists making breakthroughs ,even proving Stephen Hawking's theories wrong, but will go on and gloat about interviews about IIT toppers from North India and then based on their lack of ignorance will rant there isn't anything happening in Bengal nowadays. Then there is a political enmity of Indians towards Bengal too. Purely , a game of narrative.
Self Depreciating rants that bengalies have been moaning for decades only added to their weakening and benefit for the people who peddled it.
@@S.Ghosh_221 Well... this is not a forum for debate. Neither did I ask for it. Nonetheless, you can have your views. You are entitled to it. Signing off 🙏
@@souptikkk I didn't seek "debate" either, although I don't refrain from intelligent debate if I ever get into one,(oddly debates on logic and facts ,I have rarely got from Indophiles). You moaned about Bengali decline here. So I just needed to add more vital points to it which u didn't mention or are unaware of.
@@S.Ghosh_221 Fair enough. I understand. I just wish you had better choice of words than just saying 'moaning'. Words that would do an objective critique of a statement rather than subjectively analysing what prompted one to make a statement. This will lead to a more engaging discourse. I am sure you will agree. Anyways, you seem to be a good debater. Best wishes buddy.
@@souptikkk Comminuism destroyed many things of Bengal.
Subrata Mitra introduced bounce lighting in cinema.
