@@lipikavarma8331Mani Ratnam is the only new age Indian director who inspired most of the new Indian filmakers about using Filmmaking grammar and storytelling techniques after the initial OG's like Satyajit Ray, Adoor Gopalakrishnan who bought universal way of storytelling in India. It's not about having realistic or better films, we have that from many industries like Marathi, Kannada, Bengali and not just Malayalam. Mani Sir is more like a teacher, not matter if his films are good or bad but you will always learn something new about filmmaking from his works. Most of his films are masterclass not only in storytelling, but also in Cinematography, Art Direction, musical score etc. For me he is more like Martin Scorsese.

I don’t agree to your point that for a story about president or a sports man or about war there is no scope for women . For example : consider ‘pearl harbour ‘ . It’s a great movie and the love track is one of the bests and made a great impact . And without that portion in the movie it would be like a documentary.. The love track definitely would have made audiences to get attached to the character of the two soldiers... there are so many war movies but for me pearl harbour is the best because of that concrete love track ... And also it doesn’t really require females to produce movies to represent women .. It’s in the hands of the story teller and also audience , if there is genuine female character in the story it will be successful . If the female character is written with less importance, then it will not be good ... I love Maniratnam for the same reason , he characterised women characters sincerely and gave more importance . Roja , Bombay , uyire , kannathil muthamittal, ponniyin selvan all are political/historical movies and block busters . Without the female lead characters those stories would never have made the same impact ... Also in tamil we had many movies until 80s where a lot of priority was given to female characters by directors like balumahendra , Balachander , Bharathi Raja . After 90s it started slowly declining . Later on Gautam Vasudev Menon is another director who have been representing women with great roles . After Rajinikanth became a super star , every hero now wants to become like him and then the mass movies started happening which is a bit annoying for me too ...

I have seen some wonderful movies of Geena Davis that told stories of women (one is on women’s baseball that kept entertainment for masses during WW) in Hollywood.
We have some women narratives- past and present- but yea- they are not “box office” hits and they are still a niche.
Seldom Hindi film makers approach a women theme properly- in PK Deepika’s char shines and very organic; Deepa Mehta’s movie Water was really good; but I hated Mary Com. The commercial way of telling the story I feel reduced the intent completely.

Barbie was meant to help men realise how unfair our reality is to women by turning the tables and putting someone who they could relate to (another man) in the same sort of situation. If it made you think it was unacceptable, the film did its job. But, it requires a modicum of open-mindedness to think beyond the box and those complaining about it tend to be people who like to cling to the familiar.
