Satyajit Ray’s brilliance shines through his voice and his personality. The Chess Players is a masterpiece-I still treasure my copy bought in the UK where it was re released back in 90s.
Propah English being spoken by someone who never lived in Englans. And he was also deeply immersed on the culture and language of India. Straddled both world effortlessly. Like Tagore
What an excellent video...!! Amazing booming voice of Mr. Ray . The deatils he delves into about his films and the making behind it ... Truly exceptional 👌
What a legendary personality Mr. Ray was. Mr. Jafree is a delightful and intelligent character as well both on the screen and off the screen. Such Jems of human are no longer produced by the current human society.
I heard of this movie ever since I was a child 40 years ago. Never watched it. Saw first time during Covid due to boredom. First time I enjoyed the 'art' part of the movie, next time the comedy, and then the setup later on every time I end up discovering one/other aspect of the movie. This I believe is a gift from Satyajit Ray to the world. May I thank him again for this. Saw this again today and was so happy.
Thank u for this video of Ray talking about Shatranj Ke Khiladi, my all time favorites and also I read the book on this film written by the producer himself Mr Jindal. It's a great book and surely a collection of ur love Ray's films
This genius wasn't just a film director but a real complete filmmaker excelling in every part of the film making process from writing to scripts, to music to photography to set design to promotional materials each & every department was in his grasp. The only other person having this kind of genius was Charlie Chaplin. These guys had the skills to make an entire fully featured film all by themselves.
Had he said "urdu is a classical version of Hindi" today he probably would have been hanged😂 during the age of smartphones we Indians are walking backwards. It's a shame
Please understand that he is talking to a foreign audience. It is very difficult to make such an audience understand what Urdu is. These are some of the handicaps when you talk to an audience who are not so conversant with an outlandish culture. Example how do you explain Meerh & Jhala & Teehai of Indian Classical Music in English ?
@@aniruddhachatterjee1moreover he was a Bengali and he was well versed in that. In those times of British education Hindi still had not travelled towards eastern states that much and hence he might have gotten it wrong. That's okay. He is not god afterall
In Bengal we once had Tagore, Vivekananda, Neta Ji Subhash Bose, Satyajit Ray...Gone our heritage of being the most sophisticated intellectual race in India!! Bengal today is a necropolis..
He was a very intelligent and erudite individual, so it is surprising that he explained the Urdu language as "classical Hindi", which is categorically wrong.
Shows how you know nothing of your own history. There was no “Hindi” in the 19th century. Only various dialects of Hindustani, most being fairly rustic and quite distant from Sanskrit. Urdu represented a “high or exemplary standard” of the Hindustani at the time, which is the definition of “classical”.
You don't have any idea how enthralling it feels to hear Satyajit Ray. Thank You for uploading.
And then we have Coffee with Karan! Unfortunately most of young India will grow up without a realization of this Genius' work.

Ulto we have caught hold of their Marxist Tricks .
Well he is not wrong with the word "classical" as the language is used by classy people in Lucknow.

Well said, today our conservative youth is very emotional and unnecessarily angry over simple statements.
Good gosh baba... wherever do you find these gems?
Well come to think of it, Adil Hussain or Anurag Basu could be excellent choice for playing Ray in his biography..(ie if you grill them medium well)
The great treasure of bengal as well as India
Super Manik Da !! A legend !!
Just hearing this man speak is getting more intelligence into your eco system
Where did you find it? ❤❤
