#Lexus #LandRover #OffRoadSUV - Авто та транспорт
The difference is the Lexus will be on the road everyday and the Land Rover will be in the shop.
The Land Rover is a great vehicle to go on an adventure, however if you want to be able to come back, take the Lexus.
And if you wanna keep it for longer than 3 years get a Lexus
And if you want real luxury and money is not a problem, get the defender.
😂
First and foremost buy Quality and reliability.Take the Lexus
Thanks y'all!

If they made them now not then. They would of sold like hot cakes. Plus gm actually made the real versions not on the van frame.

One is like that hot girlfriend you had once who performed every trick, and the other is the girl you end up marrying.
You know if you modify gx460 , lift , remove sidesteps and replace front bumper with steel , it can be amazing off-road machine. I recently traded in my 2013 BMW X5 3.5i for 2014 Lexus GX460 , one of best decisions I’ve made
I used to like BMW's but after owning one I hate them
Really tell me why?
The Defender is definitely cool in theory, but in practice you have so much that can go wrong with it. I've had this same GX since 2016 and I have not had to go to my dealer. Not even once.
Gx460 is a Landcruiser Prado. Aka, mini Landcruiser. It's not a 4runner. It has bigger engine, an extra speed on the transmission, a center differential, KDSS and always on atrac... not to mention the 3rd row and lux... very reliable... gad mileage is only negative which will be fixed in the next generation with a turbo v6 or i4 engine
Lease the Defender and Own the GX. Should tell you everything you need to know.
I wouldn't even lease a Defender or any Rover Line. Would take up too much time at the repair shop and I aint got no time to keep taking that Rover to the repair shop. Time is money.
Owner: Lets go!!!
*LR. Defender* : Ok we'll get there...some time...maybe...after 2 or 3 stops at the service...perhaps we'll get there....
*Lexus GX 460* : Ok we'll get there...how fast and how many times do you want to?
defender: maybe we will arrive there
gx: how many times do you wanna go there?
Good one😂👍
Excellent point!
Great seeing you again Nathan!
Longer than Tommy is been alive 😂 lol
I wish land rovers were reliable
Yea me too although they’re not that bad too
Amen brother. The old defenders were much better. Look for a cared for 1995 or so, but be prepared to pay.
@@yes8032 they're terrible
I have yet to come across a new Defender that has broken down, excluding the fake breakdowns on this channel.
@@agt155 fake? How are they faking electronic problems? They would also get sued by JLR, and not be given a free upgraded Defended. Stop being a JLR fanboy as Consumer Reports ranks JLR as the least reliable vehicle brand that you can buy...
I will take this Lexus GX over any brand of Range Rover/Land Rover any day of the week.
The least, and most reliable vehicles side by side lol
Best comment of the thread right here! My wife and I were just sitting here watching this video and saying the same thing to each other!
I just picked up a 18 gx
My dad put 200,000 miles on his 2015 gx460. Just oil changes, brake pads and tires. He Traded it In for a 21 two weeks ago
The land rovers do look cool.
The biggest difference is reliability. The Defenders off-road capability will not get you out of the repair shop.
Hi Nathan, When are they going to sell a kit that allows you to switch the GX's luxury grille with the Prado's sensible grille?
That front end is beyond ugly. Some Toyota engineer watched way too many predator movies growing up...
We need an off road front end for the GX460.
They sell bumpers for them. But you could also just spend $40K less and get a 2013 GX460 Premium with all the same features and a much better approach.
Why don't you buy both of them? When LR is stuck, use GX to pull it out!!!
Glad you’re back Nathan!
Owner of a 2020 GX 460 here. The point about the 19" wheels is a good one. I have 18" wheels with Bridgestone Duelers mounted and that set up is good for soft-roading and daily driving. I don't plan on offroading this SUV and would choose the 4-Runner or Sequoia for that, or better yet an older Land Cruiser. A pretty face isn't everything.
The GX460 is great off road! Our 2021 GX460 lives off road
1 goes a million miles, 1 goes 40 miles. Video done
I like the Defender more
Hey Nathan! Thanks for being so objective in this review! Nice work.
Here for the comments 😆😁
with Land Rover you need another 70K for maintenance... Lexus knows about it and they sell gx for 70K. From the other hand you can buy almost exactly the same Lexus 2017 with 50K miles for 35K.
Nobody is going to pay premium money for 20 year old technology! Unless you're a gullible fool that likes getting ripped off. 😂
@@gc2234 it seems that thousands upon thousands have bought 20 year old tech because it is proven and saves them money in the long run. They let the bad credit folks buy Land Rovers.
Buy a LR under warranty/lease, enjoy it well, and after 4 or 5 years, get a new, even more advanced Car that lets you experience the best. Life is too short to be driving the same car for 20 years.
I would still go with the Lexus if I had to choose between the 2
Just bought a new gx: I’ve owned an lx since 2004: Just bulletproof!
The Range Rover Dealer is too far away to visit once a week, lol.
I will only go off roading if I fall asleep at the wheel…

Over priced vehicle vs over priced vehicle.
Yes but with the Lexus you only pay once! And you pay for quality reliability durability and peace of mind. All worth it to me 👍🏼
@@gabevillarreal96 yea but since it’s so reliable and it’s looked the same forever u might as well buy it used
@@Carfan678 That is 100% true!!! And its the only way I ever buy a vehicle! Slightly used letting someone else take the hit👍🏼
The Lexus actually isn’t over priced compared to rest of market. It’s less than a new Toyota Land Cruiser 300. It’s alittle more than a trd 4runner.
Now guess which one is going to spend more time at the service department
The definition of rhetorical 🤦🏽♂️
@Nomen Clature I say both because he would have to be dumb to not know the answer to that question for sure 👍🏼 And yes the answer is clear and obvious.

@@mikefoehr235 cool.
Did you mention that is the 3rd Rover in under 1000 miles?
I’ll admit the approach angle on the GX is quite poor. My 08 Highlander has a 30 degree approach angle so....
The cost comparison is quite a bit deceptive here. The overwhelming majority of the features that the $70k Defender includes are available on a $58k GX (from heated/cooled seats, premium lights with leveling/autobeam, sunroof- list goes on). Mind you, the Defender does come with more modern features at that price such as a HUD and newer style infotainment, but this comparison implies these are closely priced when they really aren't. A $50k Defender comes so stripped down it's hard to consider it a luxury vehicle and the next trim up is $70k, which says a lot. The GX comes with a lot of standard features and most of the GX's are sold around $58-60k.
Agree. Paid under 60k for the a new 22 GX with the new infotainment. buy Gx460, lease RR.
The GX is really a land cruiser prado. After some modifications, it’s the reliable option in my opinion.
Nobody is going to pay premium money for 20 year old technology! Unless you're a gullible fool that likes getting ripped off by Toyota. 😂
The land cruiser version is the Lexus LX570.
I just about purchase a Lexus LX570 but I was beat to the draw. It was a screamer deal at $82,000 with 198 miles, 2018 with all options.
@@icare7151 The GX460 is "Land Cruiser Prado", LX570 is the "Land Cruiser". The suffix "Prado" makes the difference.
@@felixsun548 Thank you for the clarification. I understand now.
@@gc2234 they’ve been selling a lot of these, our dealership can barely keep them on the lot
For sure lexus for reliability..but my God those lexus front ends are hideous. In my opinion...

Predator grill...
This is hilarious - i just got back from the Lexus dealership and test drove the 460. Tried to convince the wife that the Defender was the way to go but she hates the "boxy" way it looks... hoping the GX meets her approval. The GX's interior is very nice, but it also feels like its out of 2010 with its ancient infotainment system.
True. I have one and my wife loves it. She didn’t care about the old tech.
The defender is a great vehicle but not a reliable one since it is the first year their going to have bugs to fix, the Lexus will almost be worry free garanted but like you said it is very old school.
Lexus will out live the defender. Also, Lexus will have better resale value and be cheaper to maintain. I work on Toyota’s at a dealership so I speak from a lot of experience.
Nobody is going to pay premium money for 20 year old technology! Unless you're a gullible fool that likes getting ripped off by Toyota. 😂
@@gc2234 you want to know why people spend a lot for toyota products it's because if in the future you want to sell it you get almost all your money back the resale value one of if not the highest of any car companies.
Which one will be running 15 years from now?
One works for you, the other makes you work for it.
That's the perfect summary of this video, hahah
Well said
The GX does have air suspension in the back that allows you to lower and raise the car.
Good for towing; not much else
@Nomen Clature Learn to read and comprehend.
I was referring to the rear air suspension.
@@johnmpifer The rear air suspension is for off-road, not towing. The adjustable suspension only works under 20 mph (when crawling over terrain).
God I love seeing Nathan in more videos
Come on Nathan, I would never take the Lexus GX 460 off roading, that is a luxurious and fancy vehicle to do that. If I would like to buy an SUV for off roading, I would buy a 2021 4Runner TRD Off Road 4x4 fully equipped!!!!!. In my opinion, I will never buy any brand other than Toyota or maybe Honda!!!!!!.
The GX is super competent, just don't ask it to rock crawl 'stock' and you will be fine. I have done overlanding since 2016 and it is wonderful.
you made some great points on GX460.
My wife she does like the Defender better but she would get the Lexus because she needs to arrive safe and in good mood!
Really wish we got the LC Prado here. A less gussied up gx would be a great rig.
Lol, the defender sure will defend its unreliable reputation, the GX will still be running long after land rover goes bankrupt!
Nice to see you Nathan, great review
Idk land rovers customer service but I love when I bring my out of warranty 13’ GX in for anything like even a recall (secondary air pump) and I get it back washed and refueled. Oh and I receive a loaner all at no cost. That’s just amazing service and it’s the exact opposite of my Jeep Grand Cherokee even when that thing was in warranty.
Thx for nice video👍 mine vote goes for Lexus and realiabiality👍
Anyone who takes the landrover over the lexus has more $$$ than sense.
Not necessarily. Most buying new will likely trade in within 5-7 years, most if not all of that under warranty. So what is gained by getting the Lexus for that use case?
Unquestionably the Land Rover is more capable off road. Better to drive on road. Looks better inside and out. The only thing going for the Lexus is a reputation for reliability vs unproven reliability for the defender -it’s still too early to judge fairly. All the Lexus is is an outdated land cruiser but a bit worse. If brand snobbery for choosing the Lexus counts as sense then choose that one.
Lexus is better
5 years ago i would never believe these two cars would be compared against each other
Besides the Lexus going to 200k miles or more and the LR being lease only?
The junkyard defender could be half the price of the gx and I'd still buy the gx.
Had the choice between the two recently choose the Lexus GX 460 reliability and a V-8
Nathan is fighting for air between every word in that video.
I have a 2012 GX and love it. Super reliable truck
At the same price which one leases better?
As much as I love how the Land Rovers look, the reliability is more of what I look for in a car when buying to own, I’d rather spend extra money to modify the Lexus Gx460 but on the other hand if I had a Land Rover as a lease for business, then I’d go for the leased 4 Cylinder turbo Land Rover for over all better design looks and mpg weather gas or diesel. Great video!
I am shopping for a New SUV, have been driving Lexus GX and LX SUV's since 2003. Test drove the LR Defender 110 6 cylinder, and was surprised by how well it handled and accelerated, but the dealership near me has a bad reputation with regards to customer satisfaction and treatment, and LR vehicles are not exactly renowned for reliability and dependability. I put a lot of mileage on my vehicles (drive 32-35 K miles annually), so reliability and dependability are important. My neighbor, who owns a 2020 LR Range Rover Sport, advised me against purchasing the LR, as his has left him stranded on the Highway, requiring a tow on three separate occasions to date. He is trading his in for a Lexus. I also rented a BMW X-7 for a week to test drive it, came away with the impression that it has too many sensors and electronics for my taste, plus it is not body on frame which I prefer, as they hold up better long term.
Does the defender have a full frame? Or subframe?
The design makes the Defender look like a small crossover until you compare its size with others.
Which has smoother ride?
I own LS 500 and RX 350. Also know few people who does own GX 450, Defender, Lr4, They all are suburban living big house family people. And never took their SUV's off road. But I would like to meet people who take their Lexus off road!
Which one leases better???
I have zero trust in that Defender. I want to come back home after a long trip.
I don’t think those people who buy this Lexus will go off road. They are more likely to buy the 4runner or tacoma if they plan to go off road. Lexus also doesn’t build this luxury vehicle to target those off road buyers. I don’t know why you guys complaining about how it is bad for off-road because of the angles
Buy the Defender, and become good friends with the service department.
Good one 😂
My buddies dad took his brand new Defender to a shop that filled the fuell tank with DEF.
That's the only one I have heard of being stuck in a shop so far. Funny stuff tho
Great concession speech at the end Nathan! Respect!
lol buy both brand new and drive for 3 years later and check for problems and post it for sale and see what gets!!! 😄😄😄
Nathan, a few comments, you said the Defender looks cool, does that include every time it is on a flatbed going back to the dealership (as your recent history shows)? If I am going overlanding give me the Lexus everyday. The reason it is "old tech" , goes back to , if it works don't change it.
I'm guessing you also use an Abacus at work, rather than Microsoft Excel. 😂
Love the look of the Defender but I don't think I'll ever buy another car with rear-mounted spare and a swing gate. Bad rear visibility and the gate can get blocked easily if you have to parallel park. I drove a 2006 FJ Cruiser for years and those two things I didn't like.
I really like the GX but what I don't understand is why in 2021 they are still using the same interior that it's had since 2010. The Lexus GX IS a Land Cruiser Prado and the Prado was refreshed a few years ago with a far more modern interior. I have no idea why they haven't given the GX the new Prado interior which is much nicer in pretty much every way. Also for some reason the GX STILL doesn't have Carplay or Android auto which in 2021 is basically a deal breaker for many people myself included.
Gx is mechanically just fantastic, however Lexus Toyota NEEDS to at least work on the body so you can at least potentially use it off road like 4runner.
Lexus GX 460 everywhere anywhere all the time.
The fact that you can even compare these two vehicles speakers volumes for the GX as it's MSRP is much lower and the value will hold.
I save quite a bit of money because get 29-21 mpg on the highway in my GX if I keep the rpm under 2000. That equals about 80mph. I also save on repairs by not owning a Rover product....
Cant wait for the LR300 which will be the base of the new GX
No check engine light in the LR?
There’s literally nobody that would buy that Lexus brand new to go off-road, an older one I’ll give ya.
Check out GXOR

Re: 2021 4Runner Limited vs , Lexus GX460 & Land Rover
The 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited combines the best of off road capability, luxury and on road handling in a unique package that fits more budgets than mega expensive Lexus counterpart and Land Rover.
Therefore, a recommended comparison would be the luxury version of the 4Runner, the 2021 4Runner Limited which we just purchased here in Colorado, from our friends at Phil Long Toyota in Trinidad Colorado.
The real challenge for your comparison:
Is the 2021 plush and luxurious Toyota 4Runner Limited as capable as the 2021 the Lexus GX460 and Lad Rover?
Unique ONLY on the 2021 4Runner Limited are:
PART 1: Luxury
1) Perforated leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated front seats; 8-waypower-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function and power lumbarsupport;
4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat
2)Perforated leather-trimmed 40/20/40 split reclining and fold-flat second
3)Optional 3 row seating leather trimmed seats (which we have)
4) Leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth®12hands-free phone and voice-command controls
5)Front and Rear Parking Sensors
6)Advanced Pedestrian Alert and auto breaking detection
7)Upgraded 15 speaker JBL system with subwoofer, with Apple Play & Android
8)Dual zone automatic climate control with air filter and second-row vents
9)Optional Automatic Running boards (which we have)
10) Chrome door handles with touch-sensor lock/unlock feature
11) Windshield wiper de-icer
PART 2: Mechanical Major Differences:
1)Full-time 4WD with 3 modes:
H4F high speed 4WD
H4L high speed lock 4WD
L4L low speed lock 4WD
H4F is for every day driving with full time 4WD at any speed, any road conditions
When needing more traction and grip on slippery surfaces the H4L & L4L high/low speed Torsen® limited-slip center differential with locking feature provides more traction by locking the front and back drive axles “as one”.
2)X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension Rides, drives and performs like our Lexus RX450h, awesome ride yet extremely well handling on the Highway and winding mountain roads cornering more as a sports car than a heavy SUV.
Just returning from Rocky Mountain Park to Colorado Springs where we live, it handled extremely well on steep tight cornering mountain roads and highway speeds on I25.
PART 3 Limited also has:
Active Traction Control (A-TRAC)
Lane Departure Alert (LDA),
Automatic High Beams (AHB)
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P)- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian S Retractor
Downhill Assist Control (DAC)
Advance Traction Control
Trailer Sway Control
Etc Etc
Summary, from daily commute to long highway road trips to winding mountain passes to off road trails, the 2021 Limited does it all in comfort at a fraction of the cost of its Lexus counterpart and Land Rover
With 2500 miles:
Best/Average MPG so far
Highway 24.5/17 mpg
City 15.9/11 mpg
Note: We live in Colorado around 7000 ft above sea level and do quite a bit of mountain driving. The transmission does a good job when we downshifting manually, but have found 2nd gear a bit too high or too low the majority of time. A supercharger and retune would help in both fuel economy and overall performance.
We miss out 2005 4Runner v8 which had 180,000 miles on it that we traded in on our fourth 4Runner, the 2021 4Runner Limited.
An 8 speed transmission would really help optimize performance and fuel economy, but not available, thus a supercharger and retune appears to be our only option.
As we get more miles on our new 4Runner we will have a better understanding of real World fuel economy.
Thoughts?
Cheers,
Colorado Springs, CO

@@RagingBad True but he’s knocking the Lexus more so than the defender. And clearly the defender is way more capable than the Lexus. That being said 90% of people with jeep wranglers don’t go off road either so there’s that
The Defender is an incredible crossover. Buy the truck. Buy the Land Cruiser.
4Runner or used Land Cruiser.
Land cruiser
Imma stick with the Lexus GX, reliable and beautiful.
As much as I sing the praise of the older GX all the time as a great daily driver version of a 4runner (better approach angles than the new ones, etc), I love how Land Rovers look on paper. I would have bought an LR4 over my GX470 in a heartbeat if they were as reliable.
If I could afford one, I'd love one of these defenders. The problem is, I need it to consistently take me home and I just dont see a guarantee of that.
Please, Land Rover, learn a thing or two from Toyota about reliability and build a better offroading vehicle.
If rover cared about reliability they would have never stopped using the 4.4 v8. Even the lr4 was pretty reliable compared to the current generation and it came with a 5l v8 that grenades itself due to weak timing chain guides. Which is really bad because the 4l jag engine already had the problem and they fixed it in the 4.2 and 4.4. It seems like ford fixed a lot but as soon as JLR was allowed autonomy they went back to doing questionable things.
The thing about new techs is, they're only new for a short time and still yet to be proven. While old techs are proven to be reliable.
Interested to see how the Defender's reliability is after a few years on the market. Wish the Lexus did something with their mpg...I wouldn't mind the ancient interior if that engine gave better mileage. Might as well buy a ten yr old 460, there wouldn't be much difference.
Simply don't have the patience to have a JLR product in my life , Toyota can build something that actually works usually.
Nobody is going to pay premium money for 20 year old technology! Unless you're a gullible fool that likes getting ripped off by Toyota. 😂
And the opposing viewpoint is Nathan's: life is too short to drive boring vehicles, and Toyota is a master at that. I will take the repair risk anytime to have a vehicle that is an event to drive..... and yes, I do own (2 now) LR products.
Amen!! I just bought a GX460 to replace my totalled Ram truck. I don't care that the tech is dated, the systems are redundant, if the main screen fails, the analog dials allow me to control the radio etc. The V8 is old, thirsty, reliable as a Rolex. The drivetrain, reliable as can be. Parts availability and ability to be repaired is amazingly good. The Lexus was beat for me
I think that red car is not sold in Germany. Maybe the grill is to big for the Autobahn 😳.
16 MPG combined for the Lexus GX 460 is a stretch to say the least, I have driven Lexus GX and LX SUV since 2003 and while they are rock solid and extremely dependable, gas milage is deplorable.
If this was a 2023 defender model, which literally spent the previous 3 years perfecting the reliability and manufacturing process and not including a bunch of new random tech, I would get it because it’s just so much more appealing in every way. But it’s a 2020 model with issues, so lexus.
The only problem with that statement is that Land Rover doesn't know how to perfect reliability regardless of how many years they have to perfect it. Lexus reliability is engineered into everything they make since 1989👍🏼 Their reputation precedes them! So does Land Rover's.
@@gabevillarreal96 I understand and I was afraid of this too, and I really hope it’s not true. They have been focusing on it lately and I hope it pans out.
@@adurpandya2742 I hope for your sake but the problem to me is not them not focusing on it. The problem to me is that the company simply does not have the knowledge know how or history in the company to get that done. I truly believe that they need to hire a former lexus engineer or executive as a mentor in how to instead of fix nonstop problems, engineer them to be problem from a research and development, quality parts sourcing, manufacturing and quality control standpoint. If that happens then you have a potential winner. But it takes time money and heavy investment in new manufacturing and quality control processes. Good luck.
I just got a GX460. I know that thing will be on the road long after any euro suv is recycled scrap
I really like the durability and dependability of Toyota/Lexus products and would choose the GX 460 over the Defender.....however, I HATE THE FRONT END of the GX 460!
It gets better gpm than advertised, my wife was getting 19-20 on the highway and 17 combine.
