It looks like you used latex caulk? The significant chip out you got at the edges is likely a result of this. Concrete will stick to latex caulk. You need to be using 100% silicon if you want clean edges. Nice looking bench either way.

I know now. So next week video will have to caulk as well, did them the same time. So don't think i'm hard hear when you see me using caulking in the video. lol

Great Video! I have several years experience as a commercial carpenter and have built many forms in my life. I would like to suggest that you use some spray cooking oil on your forms to keep the concrete from sticking.
Thank you. I actually used mold remover. I noticed oil usually stain the concrete in my experience.

HOLD UP, you live in Florida and it doesn't rain much? Are you talking about the same Florida that's a part of the United States? Because where I live in South Florida it rains more than not. Bench looks amazing though! Really love the look of concrete and wood complementing each-other.

Kyle Anderson depends on the season man. You know after November, it easy's up a bit until March. Trying to give my man Glen a break here...lol. But you guys are right, it rains just about everyday especially during hurricane season. I live by universal studios and from like, 3 to 6, it comes down man.
Orlando, where I lived, is guaranteed a frog-strangling cloudburst every day from May-June thru September-October. They usually last for about 20 to 30 minutes and then they're over.
Man it rained every day over here in Orlando for the summer break! Haha! ^_^

Two identical Boxes? You can use one Box twice...
Lol so a two week wait?
It's safer to make two, because concrete is finicky and as you saw, he had to destroy parts of the mold.. then trying to put it back together and just replace those parts can result in a wonky crooked second cast, because no matter how good you try to seal it, the melamine will absorb water in the middle particle layer and warp a bit. If you look at nearly any concrete mold after being used it looks a bit beat up and crooked.
So there is a good reason to make two, especially considering how cheap melamine is and you can usually get multiple molds out of a single large sheet. There is just no real reason not to make two, you get safer, better results, save time, and it probably wont cost anything extra in time or money if you build them concurrently.
So yeah... two boxes.
Best case scenario with one box, is you have to wait twice as long, which is a big deal when you're considering dealing with time spans of days or weeks.. that's time and space you can't use. Also, leaving concrete around for that long risks accidentally ruining it, bumping, dropping something on it, animals... etc. Better to get them done as fast as possible, limit the amount of time you have wet concrete around. Also, with only one box, if something does happen, you have to start entirely over again, and have nothing to show.. with two, likely only one will have a problem and you can fix it and move on.. not have to start over, wait a week, make another batch, wait another week.. by then you're a month deep before you see any results. It can be very mentally taxing for a maker to have a catastrophic failure like that, at least with something to show it keeps you in the game, and keeps you mentally strong and motivated to continue and less likely to give up after wasting a week or more of your time and seeing nothing.
So there are a multitude of reasons to do two or more molds at once and not try to reuse them. It isn't always about pinching pennies or saving a bit of material.
@@AJ-ew7kr depends on the cement you use. Also if done properly you can take it out of the mold to finish curing while starting the next.
If it were me I'd figure out how to build a mold that is coated mold release and the pieces are on tracks that when clamped only requires new silicone. Now this might not work, but let's be honest, your friends and family will want one.
If this is a bench for people to sit on, the edges of the wood need to be sanded smooth or else it will be uncomfortable on the back of the legs/thighs. This could have been avoided if the bench was designed to have the wood placed long-ways. As it is, it's not great for sitting, but OK for setting things on, like flower pots or something similar.

I make benches like this all the time. I ve been making this kind an many other styles since high school and that was 30 years ago .
Anyway , it would bow a very little but not for a long long time because its not to long .
If it was longer and the span was further apart from the concrete, well then yes an alot sooner.

Well done as usual. However, I think the bench is still not stable enough.To do so, I think you need to attach the legs to each other using one or more pieces of wood to prevent them from falling apart when moving while setting on them. I hope you got that. Good luck.

Hey Glen !! Florida you say ? MIND BLOWN !! I've been watching your videos forever! I am in Biscayne Park in the Miami-Dade area. I was wondering if you are available for hire? My fiance and I are looking for a good contractor that knows his stuff and is trustworthy. Our home was built in 1938 ! And needs MUCH love and attention. We would also like to build a guest house/music studio in the back, our property is just over a quarter acre. (0.26) I am almost 5 months pregnant and have some ideas of the direction I would like to take for our patio , involving pergolas and many many hanging porch swing beds and chairs; water features, fire pit walls, built in bbq grill, outdoor kitchen, etc. We just purchased a 10' x 30'' inflatable pool as I thought that would be the safer option for now for my 5 yr old; we do plan on installing a much larger pool later on and I could really use some guidance with that, I'd like for it to look sleek , modern and 'pondlike' to match the rest of the property theme. I would also like to incorporate a large play area that weaves though the yard with more swings, inground trampoline, sandbox, playhouse/treehouse, etc. The bedroom I will be using for a nursery is quite small and I would like to incorporate a window bench with a rolling ladder with shelves and drawers to maximize space. We also need to completely redo our kitchen and bathroom , would like to add another bathroom, I mean , the list goes on and on. Should you be interested, you will have no shortage of work. Everywhere I look in this house, there is SOMETHING that needs to be done. If you are not able to work with us directly, maybe you happen to know some good contractors in the Miami-Dade area. I truly hope I am lucky enough to get a reply from you ! I love your videos I bingewatch them all of the time ! lol I will give our contact info if and when I receive your reply. I have some comments about your design... I would estimate that each concrete section weighs about 100-125 lbs. So even if you could pick it up to move it, the wood structure would be destroyed. So even to move it a few inches is very difficult without damaging it.. Lastly, structurally, it is VERY STRONG to hold vertical weight... BUT in the sideways direction, the bench is balanced by the concrete standing... It is only held together with three thin blue concrete screws. If I came from the side and kicked or jumped on the concrete, the side forces would make the entire bench collapse. Very dangerous. If I was making that, I would use lag screws, and put an additional bottom support beam to connect the 2 concrete bases...

Nice little project there, haven't come across your channel before which is surprising since you have 1m subscribers! Anyway my only thought was I wander if the concrete forms could be a bit thinner and to strengthened with some glass fibres or something. But great video and project!

That bench is so sweet looking.. I think I am going to make if a few of them By the way.. on your sweet looking dog house please place a foil barrier in the roof.. easy to put in after its done and also if you could put cool grass rather than cement stepping stones as they get really hot as does the gravel.. Unless you have 100% shade in high summer sun ..

Myself I would have colored the concrete to offset the driveway look. Too much work for an old man such as myself, I seldom sit in the backyard without air conditioning.

FYI you can use ANY type of wood to make your molds as long as you wipe it with any kind of oil before you put the cement or concrete in it, you can wipe it with used motor oil, even cooking spray, concrete or cement will never stick to wood...give it a try and use plywood instead is cheaper.

It's nice clean work..but video says DIY, where is that part.most of us don't have so many tools to make such things. But it's nice work.
Looks great, but the seat will probably cup. There is no support on the ends and the grain is turned the wrong way on 3 boards. Friendly advise. I really wanna know how well this held up.

It would save you time if you used solid plastic decking material; Less sanding, less waterproofing maintenance and less color fading.

your a nice guy i don't want to hurt your feeling, but i think your concrete is too wet, try out Polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer to reduce water cement ratio . it's a nice job though
Nice looking bench; however glueing and screwing wood grain at 90 degrees to each other could cause a problem. Would also like to see some gasket material between the wood and concrete.

To get a more finished industrial look, don't use deck screws on the outside edge... Use a large head hex stainless lag bolt. I was sad when you left those cheap deck screws exposed after all that work. At least use a screw with a large finished look. Overall, great project.

Very nice looking bench! I have one question which is hauntng me for a while. Why do you seal the wood at the end and hence only from the visible sides? I could imagine rain flowing ven under the top wooden pieces and start a rotting process from the inside. I thought about painting the pieces before attaching them to the bench and I am not sure, if there's a reason to do it the other way. Thanks and BR

Sadly those open areas will let water sit on the cross board below You can put in a thin cricket Peaked at Center, which is sealed between and waterproof it where water will ran out and not rot support plank.
Would it be better to apply the coating before gluing the planks together? Otherwise wouldn't it allow water to seep in the gap where you did not apply the protection?
