literally my fav DIY bench on UA-cam, not just its design but affordability! I will make one with 2x4s with plywood instead of cedar boards. Thank you.
So Nathan , im building this bench and the only thing i have changed is I am running the 2x4 horizontals to lay on top of the legs. Just a load bearing thing..
Absolutely love this video! Keep it up mate. I’m almost finished making this bench but abit bigger for my mum for Mother’s Day for her garden. I’m upto sanding and putting stain on it. It has came along so well. I love it!
Very nice….. ask you a question because I filled a lot of outside furniture/contraptions with wood and I find it frustrating that no matter which method I try to use when the wood since outside within just three or four months there seems to be lots of gaps. So let me ask you did you ultimately see gaps on your corner reminders or anywhere else because of the sun and wind and rain etc.
Hey! There are in one or two of the joints but I’ve found using totalboat thixo epoxy I don’t get any gaps. I think it’s because it’s more of a gel consistency. That said, the outdoor wood glue has held up pretty well for the most part.
I purchased two cedar fire pit benches for my son's yard....he just assembled them. Tocweatherize them, which "treatment/stain" would you advise before he puts them outside? Thank you.
I have used teak oil for my outdoor cedar furniture. I actually am working on a video for that right now. Just have not gotten around to editing it yet.
Yes - it also makes it easier to keep the finish nice as you can just clean the wood and add more oil periodically. No need to remove the old finish. You can also use epoxy and vanishes, but I'm my opinion, this is the best bang for your buck re time and money.
Hey thanks! You could use pine as well it just won't last as long unless you finish it to protect it from the sun and rain. You may also have other wood that would work well near you. In the end use anything I just used cedar as it is cheaper here and is mostly milled already. Good luck
I thought about making a similar table by adding two more rows, but that would be boring to watch again :). I did just publish a similar table though. Check it out. Also thanks for the feedback!
Be interested in hearing how this holds up with a few people sitting on it. A couple of pocket screws seems like a weak joint for those cross pieces. Mortise and tenon would be best.
It is rock solid. The pocket holes are really just to hold things in place while the glue dries. It's definitely a good idea to glue these joints since they will be outside.
@@darinnetherland3466 I have found that as long as you saturate the end grain with glue so it doesn't pull all the moisture out, you can get a good joint. I will let you know if it fails in the future, but I think the combination of pocket holes and glue will hold up well for as long as I keep the furniture.
@@NATHANBUILDS I definitely need one. My air nailer seems low tech after seeing that thing. I just returned from Home Depot & Lowes in my area and unfortunately they don't carry 2x4 cedar. Looks like I'm out of luck this time.
What miter gauge are you using? How do you like it? Did it take any adjustment to fit tightly? I also have a dewalt table saw (7491rs), and need a better miter gauge. Great video!
I love it and all it requires is that you adjust the little tension bolts in the slide bar so it fits snuggly as it slides. Very easy. - Table Saw Miter Sled - Kreg KMS7102: amzn.to/2WFWhv1
Super nice. Cause you used cedar, I take it that you didn't have to coat the wood with anything? I like this I'm going to have to save it for later and try my luck with. Great vid. Thanks.
Yes, the cedar holds up really well in the elements. You can also finish it if your want, but I wanted it to gray out. Make sure you use lots of glue on the joints to help prevent warping. Mine has held up really well. I'm actually thinking of making a matching table and sofa. Thanks for watching!
Hey bro why did you put those beams on the side of the legs and not over them? In this way you are putting all the weight on the screws... I mean, I would have made it very differently
@@NATHANBUILDS Those round nail in feet! I am surprised but if they are holding up, so much the better. What size? 1" or more? I have been toying with th eidea of covering the bottom of the feet with some neoprene rubber sheeting I have. Not sure how that would work out but it is certainly waterproof.
@@NATHANBUILDS I built this bench and when I purchased the cedar at HD, none of it was a uniform color. But wen I was done, it looked really good with varying colors.
I'm sure. You could also switch the seat 2x4 pieces to run the whole length of the top and sit on the leg 2x4s. That would add a ton more strength. Essentially you would have to break the wood to break it.
Hey! It just had to be straight enough to cut the first edge, then you flip it over and cut the second side parallel. You can also run the first cut through with the concave side attached to a straight piece of wood, then flip it over and reference the side you just cut. You can see some of how that works on this build: ua-cam.com/video/hAMJTn-GVoY/v-deo.html
Hehe, that is one reason why I didn't add the bottom slats. Nothing yet living in it, but I did have some carpenter bees eating into the outdoor sofa I made.
No I think you are just referring to the table saw, which is a DeWalt DWE7491RS. I also have a planer, the DeWalt DW734. I've been really happy with both.
Great design and looks pretty simple to make. However if you're not a professional and don't have a planer or table saw, it becomes much more complicated and expensive. 😂
is it me or does the math not add up? The total width of one of the legs = 4.5" however the 2x4 width is displayed as a 3" piece of lumber - 3" + 0.5" + 0.5" = 4" but the sketch shows 4.5" total width.
The sketches are initial plans but I definitely make changes in the fly for various reasons. So the build in the video can vary slightly from the drawings.
Push guards are overrated, and wouldn't stop most table saw injuries. It's extremely rare to just carelessly drop your hand into the blade, and far more likely that it gets _pulled_ in by a workpiece that closed up around the blade and got thrown. Even more common is to get hit in the face or torso by a thrown workpiece. The riving knife that Dewalt includes is way more effective at preventing binding in the first place, and thereby eliminating the root cause of most table saw injuries.

Very easy to increase the depth and maybe decrease the height to yield a nice outdoor coffee table design?
I thought about it, but decided to have it be a bit different. Here is my matching coffee table: ua-cam.com/video/zRttLIdnGNY/v-deo.html
