Thank you sooooo much!! You've gained another subscriber tonight. It's like you were talking directly at me and my train of thoughts. I need to learn to live with the discomfort of anxiety and ride it out.
I think the problem with people like health anxiety like myself, always fearful of having a health issue, is we can't do anything to "escape" it, not as simple as washing your hands after touching something you think is contaminated.
This is something I have started doing myself. Like a form of Exposure Therapy, I have been putting myself in situations that make me feel very uncomfortable and though it sends my ocd paranoia into a frenzy I find that it does help. I am only at early stages but I am hoping that with persistence the anxiety with lower
Good work starting to put it into practice. The whole idea is that you put yourself in situations that your OCD doesn't like and then respond differently so good on you for challenging your OCD. If you keep it up and you give up your rituals or safety behaviours the more you do it the easier it will get. Katie
But most therapist focus only on behavior and thoughts but emdr therapy can help us deal with traumatic experiences which are often the roots of ocd i think both are important, and to learn how to deal with our emotions
Great info. How would you recommend applying this to someone with OCD who is super particular about cleanliness and perfect operation of their new phones or other electronic devices?
You need to watch the other videos about Exposure and Response Prevention and apply these techniques. Work out what it is you are trying to avoid or prevent and then make a list of these things. Starting with something manageable you need to challenge yourself to do the thing you don't want to do - e.g make phone deliberately dirty, don't wipe and then use etc. The more you challenge your idea that you need cleanliness and perfection the easier it will become. Katie
Thanks. That is along the same lines of what my therapist told me. Btw I ordered one of the books you recommend. I am going to watch all the videos. Would u be able to make a video geared to this sorta OCD that I have?
NYRfan4ever I hope to do more videos as soon as I get time, however it's hard to do videos geared to each type of OCD as there are so many variations - I would love to try but it's unlikely to happen any time soon I'm afraid. The main thing to understand is that the treatment protocol is the same - whatever type of OCD you have - hence why they are general so that everyone can benefit from them. Kind regards, Katie
Yes but even more than that try and do the opposite of what the OCD wants - so if the ritual would be to clean then spread the contamination, if the ritual is to try and stop or replace the thought then deliberately think something even worse etc
you have a way with words. thank you.
