REVIEW: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
This is the second generation of BMW X2, but it’s the first that you can have as a pure electric car. Badged the iX2 it gets a 64.8kWh battery, two different models - a 201bhp, front-wheel drive eDrive20 model or a rapid, all-wheel drive variant in the 309bhp xDrive30. You can also have it as a plug-in hybrid, and as a standard mild hybrid petrol car, but here we’re focussing just on the electric iX2.
Being a mid-sized family premium electric SUV priced at around £52,000 and up, the iX2 has competition - and a lot of it. The Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, Mercedes EQA, Audi Q4 e-tron and Volvo C40 Recharge all count themselves as rivals, not to mention BMW’s own slightly smaller, cheaper and less stylish iX1.
The BMW iX2 gets a range of up to 283 miles in the eDrive20, or up to 267 miles in the xDrive30 that we drove, which is adequate but not exactly brilliant given that alternative electric cars like the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6 offer a range of over 300 miles. They also charge more quickly; the BMW’s rapid charging tops out at 130kW, which isn’t that impressive for a new model when you consider that a Kia EV6 has a maximum charging rate of 235 kW and a Tesla Model Y can charge at up to 250 kW. But, BMW does point out that the iX2’s new charging software optimises charging so that it holds a high charge rate for a long period rather than trailing off quite quickly as the battery fills - as most electric cars do. Basically, it has faster overall charging speeds despite a comparably low charge rate on paper, so it’s still said to manage a 10-80% charge in 29 minutes, which does compare to that of Model Y. We’ll have to see how that works out in the real world when we get a car to a charging station in the UK.

BMW has been making some of the most fugly cars in recent years 😢 something has gone terribly wrong with their design
It looks as if 15 different people had to design a separate bit of the car! And only then did they put it together!
....albeit, badly😂
Is that the 2024 Pontiac Aztek?…
This is an eyesore! BMW needs to seriously increase its budget for product design!
If they continue with this "cobble something together quickly" in a vane attempt to save their EV embarrasment, they are likely to go bust.
Only stevie wonder would consider paying top dollar for this monstrosity and others similar that they are churning out!
They are definitely "on something" and have lost the plot.
It's awful to look at - such a shame
That's mean, I think jinny is lovely 😅😅
Looks like a 🐽
I own a 7 year old i3 and yet have to see another BMW EV that matches it.
The i3 is a great car, loved it! Shame they discontinued it.
I really like your straightforward way of telling the truth!
Pardon my language but, Jesus Christ! Different isn't always better BMW!
Yes, the compromises for a legacy platform s quite evident. As a former BMW i3 owner, I can test the efficiency of their drivetrain, but they are going in the wrong direction with their design language and taking an inordinate amount of time to transition their SUVs to BEVs. I would have loved to replace my i3 with another BMW, but instead, there was nothing available, so I opted for a Smart 1.
Another i3 owner here. Love it but like you no other BMW I would currently consider as a replacement. All are too large and Fugly!
Yep, another ex i3 owner. I regret selling it, should've kept it as a 2nd car, it was , ans still is, brilliant design & engineering, way ahead if its time.
A fantastic 2nd hand purchase.
Completely agree on the need for easy-to-activate battery pre-conditioning , particularly in winter. Should be standard in EVs, especially at this price!
I have an iX3 and there is an app that you can activate that pre-heats the battery for fast charging. I admit, it doesn't tell you any information just says "active" or "inactive" depending on whether you've turned it on - so it could be better!
Just add the manual preheat button to the shortcut menu?
From the company that gave us the i3 a decade ago. Not angry, just disappointed.
The jittery ride may be from "drive on flat" tyres. My x4 came with them and changing to normal tyre was a huge improvement.
Another good & honest review.
I'm not a fan of the base grey colour, it just looks like they stopped at the primer and forgot the top coat but that's just me.
The car itself looks overweight and a little bit awkward, which is maybe why the price matches it's lardyness 😂
I do like coupes but this one seems to have forgotten what it was somewhere as yes, it may look a little more trendy with the sloping roofline but it sacrifices practicality in the rear seats and boot so overall, I have to agree, not one for me.
The rear spoiler and the rear seat headrests markedly reduced visibility through rear window during test drive of X2 M35i. What's your experience? Also, please comment of care of 'frozen' paint options. Thanks
It looks to me like BMW has unveiled a posh version of the Enyaq coupé.
The Enyaq Coupe RS is of course faster than the BMW 😂
I'm not sure that it's a posh version. Perhaps it's just a more expensive version.
@dominicmoloney2621 more like a down-market version at an up-market cost.
Only a blind fool would buy this monstrosity surely.
“A global collaboration from BMW design studios” who never met!
Good review, you overlooked the Nissan ARIYA e4orce in your competitor list: smoother ride, longer range, quicker acceleration and premium interior all in a chassis designed from the CAD up as a pure electric...
nice! is this colour "brooklyn grey"?
A great review, thank you.
It did not help that I watched this shortly after seeing the Renault 5 review. The Renault 5 is just so much better and half the price. I rather felt Captain Manwaring, had he been born in the 1990s, might have bought this car.
Good honest review Ginny, you're right it's a lot of money for not a lot of car it would seem and such a shame they couldn't afford a paint colour other than primer.
Are their designers all blindfolded when doodling these days 🙄🙈
Agree, deadly boring EV's, all the same and all 4-door saloons that are only different from the rest in the brand name on the front and back.
How are they still selling cars in volume at BMW? The design studios seem to have had a stroke and the accountants are on crack.
Great review again from Ginny though.
I sat in one at Fully Charged Live/Everything Electric Australia and the one thing I didn't like never mind the grille is the deadzone between the brake pedal and accelerator my foot got jammed in between them unlike the Hyundai Kona(2024) or Ioniq 5/6. Postman Mike needs to test this same as Renault 5 for us taller folk.
It’s a 👎🏼 from me. Another EV adapted from an ICE car🤢 BMW really arnt trying, they showed so much promise with the i3….🤷🏻♂️
And in this colour, it looks camouflaged against a blue sky and the sea!!
I almost choked when I heard the price. This won't be a big seller.
Exactly.
£570 a month all in (including insurance, maintenance and tyres) isn't too bad for this (3 years, 12k miles pa)
@@SDK2006b A lease might make a lot more sense. I only buy cars.
@SDK2006b does that include a free face mask? Nobody in their right mind would wish to be seen driving this monstrosity and getting laughed at.
@@David-bl1bt - looks are subjective opinions, not fact 💡
BMW sales of EV’s are going very well ⚡️👍🏻
I don't hate it, it would blend in fairly well on the road with everything else, it's not shocking in any way for better and worse. I prefer the i3 I wish BM carried on with that style despite all the negative comments at the time.
How to compare this with Kia EV6?
EV6 got 800V, max DC at 250KW, bigger battery bigger range
Thank you for your review and honest conclusions. How the world has changed, when a Skoda or Kia might be more appealing than a BMW!
For me it's beautiful! I don't know why everyone is hating so much the design of the exterior.
Excellent review.
I was looking at this car vs the skoda enyaq 85 coupe and it lost imo on everything vs the skoda.
So this week Renault launch the budget 5 and BMW this !
Renault has not Launched anything yet !!
The 5, any day of the week. This exorbitant of junk is unbelievably ugly ad fcuk
Thank you for your review x
My money would go on a KIA EV6 BY FAR ❤
still saving my pennies for one cannot wait ❤
My wife has the ix1 (same battery and drive train as this) and the range is absolutely terrible - we did a journey last week, driving “normally” on a mixture of roads and I calculated a real range from 100% to 0% of 185 miles. I could of slowed the driving a little but it was just normal driving on the UK roads - while I didn’t expect to be actually getting 250+, below 200 was a real shock. @electrifying / Ginny - what do you practically think you’d of got from the ix2 ?
What did you expect from an SUV/Crossover with an unnecessarily large frontal area and a rather bad coefficient of drag? Maybe consider something that isn't an SUV/Crossover? Aerodynamic drag is rather considerable when driving at higher speeds...
That should of been taken into account when they published their range figures - so I expected something in the realm of what the manufacturer of the car told me it was going to do - not really that unrealistic or unreasonable
@@angela1984aexactly, if range is what you are looking for then i4 is the place to be
What Do you expect to get from a 64 kWh battery? In Average you can calculate during winter 20-25 kW/100km which gives you max 300km/180 miles?
@@sunseeker-yb5qt Again - if that is an official calculation then they should state that. I dont really consider a UK winter really that big an impact on the battery anyhow and our previous Tesla was not massively impacted until well below zero (C)
I thought the even numbers were coupes so X4/X6 - perhaps the X2 was the hold out until now, but logically it makes sense to be that style.
Thanks Ginny. I think you said it all. Now onto something a bit better.
Good review.
No positive comments here?
I love this car’s design. Went in the dealer to look at an iX3 and went out with one of these ordered.
Love it ❤
Those panels on the rear 3/4 just look horrible, what's with the thin wheel arch panel?!
The rear is reminiscent of a 90's Renault megahertz.
“A global collaboration between BMW design studios”. In other words, too many cooks, spoil the broth. As a long time BMW owner, nothing is tempting me to get another. It’s all just bloaty and dull now.
Excellent review of an apparently very compromised car. I can't stop seeing Darth Vadar in the front grill and the hideous fake "grills" and disjointed lights on the rear? I don't know what BMW designers are drinking at the moment but I look forward to when they stop doing so :)
Shocker for £60k
Great honest review, well done 👏🏻
Love ❤️ it
Excellent presentation
It looks like a SkodaEnyaq Coupe, but it's hit every branch of the ugly tree on the way out of the factory. The Enyaq is a good looking car...unlike this BMW.
Nice, macan electric pls and new taycan, a daily usage review will be nice❤👍
Good review. BMW fan, but not convinced by this, especially for the price.
You're right about the looks, especially those plastic grills are obnoxious to look at and the german obsession with having to buy "packs" to get the car specced correctly is massively annoying.
With that said, I would still rather buy a BMW than a Tesla, mainly because the assistant system actually work correctly and you'll get stalks for turn signal and wipers.
I think they could at least pick a different colour. What is this colour, boring gray?
Officially, the colour is referred to as John Major. 😉
@@connclissmann6514😂
Thanks for this review. We agree it seems to be too much plastic inside for a BMW car😢. You say the ride is stif and rigid, have you checked the weight of this car? We suggest you do so. It is a rock from Stonehenge on wheels. 😱😂
The BMW i3 is still my favourite BMW.
Welcome to PT!
I have to say that I'm not a big fan of BMW but I've always liked BMW styling, but this BMW iX2 however, seems to have been designed in parts. I really can't help thinking that if you were to take off all the BMW badges and asked the public what car they thought it was, like me, they might have thought this was a Skoda Enyaq, which I like.
...or more likely a yansong rectum😂
Still think a Škoda Enyaq would be better, and at this price you could look at the top of the range
I am more excited about the new Dacia Duster, Citreon E-C3 and Renault 5. I thought I would like this car, but it just is not doing it for me.
Starting price of £51K ? Get stuffed BMW. Bring on Nio and Xpeng, I'm sick of being ripped off.
NIO and Xpeng are the most overpriced garbage ever
You'll be disappointed. Chinese cars are only cheap in China
Looks like my Skoda interior. I don’t want that vibe spending that sort of money on a BMW. The new X2 was top of my new leasing list and now I’m not so sure.
Improvements to Android Auto for EVs were announced. Personally I also hope that adds battery conditioning integration.
The only thing good about this is the down to earth honest review. Well done Ginny. That car is awful looking. What on earth has happened to BMW's design division the past 5 years? They used to be conservative, understated but instantly recognisable as a BMW. As others have said, I'd much rather have the new Renault 5 which is better looking, more fun and also far far cheaper.
BMW have completely lost the plot with this. I really dislike the style of this car. I do not have a problem with the 4 series/i4, the i7/7-series (which I actually like), or even the iX. The previous X2 was really nice looking. This just looks trashy. It might be OK for a new Lada. But not for a BMW. Front grille aside, this looks more like an old Renault than a new BMW. And what’s with that massive black part under the grille. No thank you! To add insult both injury it dies not even seem to be particularly good. I’d be shocked if this became a big seller. Someone on these comments mentioned Pontiac Aztec. Good analogy!
Beautiful car. I’ll get mine soon
“I have yet to see a system that.. …you could press a button to tell it that you are heading to a charger”. You have seen it, it was on the ID7 you drove. And it’s also available on the other new Volkswagen group cars, as well as the Smart # cars.
What’s the use of an SUV that you can’t put anything in?
I like it, but then, having owned an X4 I probably would.👍
So, they slice off the back to make it more coupe-like, BUT they increase the price despite having less cargo capacity and rear visibility.
Only the Germans, right?
BMW iX2 Panzerwagen! Are they trying to echo historic designs of bigger and heavier is better? ;)
Thanks for the review Ginny. When is BMW going to learn that lumbering its EVs with combustion platforms is always going to hold them back?
Very good
a lot of nopes, I think BYD Seal in that shadow green colour looks and drive nicer? ;p
That's another £120 month over this though
Why is both the acceleration performance and the top speed so much slower than the US and Chinese competitors? Has BMW given up on performance? What is their new slogan? We are more sustainable, pay our premium prices for cars that don’t even can compete on performance?
I can say that there is no standing ovation from any part of my body. It's all rather ho-hum.
I feel like BMW’s designers never say ‘no’. Just stick it all in there!
How bloomin' much?!
7:50 Glitch in the Matrix
Indeed.
Not sure why you see this as a Model Y competitor. It’s a quite a bit smaller, with less range. On top of that it’s £5K-£10k more expensive and yes you do get a nicer interior (IMHO) and better perceived quality, but I just can’t see this persuading many people in that comparison.
BTW the ‘Maximum Efficiency’ function is pretty much ubiquitous on EV’s - almost all have a n ‘Eco’ setting or similar to max out range. Not really a feature worth crowing about!
Hey Manos 👋👀
That aside, yeah .. not feeling it. Styling is very similar on the rear to the X4 and that’s not a compliment.
it looks like a Skoda
I have never owned a BMW. I like the X2. At least this has a distinct style from other big BMWs. Just like the Audi Q2 style is distinct from the other big Audi SUVs. Can anyone tell the difference between the Mercedes SUVs? They all look the same to me!
The real horror story here is your fashion sense and the quality of your video, darling.😂
Saw one of these on the road yesterday - oh my days! It looks even worse in person! I’m struggling to see any positives with this car!!!!
I like the side and rear profile, but wow, that's a face only its mother could love! I really don't get BMWs recent design direction with making the grill ever larger and larger - looks hideous! Shark's nose? Nope. Reminds me of the pigs from Angry Birds....
I suspect the shape at the rear has been designed that way as a nod to improving the drag figures. I hope we're coming to the end of the days where manufacturers other than Hyundai (with the original Ioniq) are designing EVs with the aerodynamics of a brick wall.
I prefer the look of this over the old X2. I wouldn't have one as interior space too small. Despite all the negative comments on social media, which, lets face it, means nothing to them, and so so reviews on UA-cam, BMW are the 4th largest brand by sales in the UK. Surely this means they're doing something right.
As for those who say just buy a Tesla, I hate Teslas with a passion. If Tesla were the last cars on the planet, I'd walk.
I’m with you on this car. Why do you make what is a practical car into a not so practical by trying to make it into something it’s not ie a coupe it’s an SUV.
I like it, I wouldn’t say no to one!
Much prefer the old shape!
Me either.
Oh dear...
Five Hundred and Eighty litres is a small boot, is it? That’s close to Mercedes E volume, and about the same as the very capacious Enyaq. The sloping tailgate might be a problem for dogs but generally isn’t for luggage - unless you’re an antique dealer or an undertaker.
That still doesn’t mean I’ll be buying one of these, because I need to carry people more Mike- than Ginny-sized. (I’ve tried the iX1 and couldn’t fit in the back.) Disappointing that BMW’s best family EV is still the lumpy iX3, which hides the adapted-platform compromises better than it ought to, possibly by putting the batteries in the place of the X3’s space-wasting 4WD hardware. The i4, i5 and iX1 and 2 seem to lose all the EV packaging advantages in trying to be all things to all buyers.
With the lead they got from the i3 (I’m on my second, by the way) BMW ought by now to be offering a range like Polestar’s - or at least Polestar’s brochure - with none of the funding constraints and all the confidence of a mainstream maker. These offerings feel like a missed opportunity.
1:16 Darth Vader. OK I'm done.
It definitely doesn’t look the best. And a range of less than 300 miles should be a no-no in these times.
👍
Morning Ginny
the Viking may get jealous
I'm a bmw fan,
but this is another weird shape bmw inside and outside.
Looks like a 1990’s Renault………
And - When are German car designers going to learn that EV buyers don’t want a compromised ICE car design, we want a properly designed EV and for it to look good - we want a 2024 redesign of the i3 and i8 not a redesigned 2000’s 3 series at silly prices. VW/Audi/ Porsche and Mercedes are just the same.
Its over designed in my opinion, like a lot of BMWs today. I'll stick with my Polestar 2 😊
Good looking car, but not really the sort of car that a guy like me might even look at as their personal transport!!
It’s a horrendous look, a global design car is always a Jack of all trades and a master of none..and the price..OMG we are lucky enough to have four cars, my wife runs X5 Hybrid from work delivered yesterday, I have 997 and 991.2 for my everyday car I went Electric as overnight tariff is excellent, I purchased outright a 2023 Jaguar I Pace with 6000 miles new list was 70.000 I paid £39.000 and will own it for three years, seems like a bargain 😊
