I've had my Ariya Engage for 13 months now and absolutely love it. I considered the Y, but for all the reasons you mentioned I chose the Ariya and have no regrets
@@davidbartlett781 Since making my comment on this video I went for the Renault Scenic E-Tech. It’s quoted to be 372 mile range and in the time iv had it i can say it has done over 300 comfortably. So maybe look at that if you’re wanting an electric car with over 300 mile range. Not to mention it’s probably a better car all round than the Ariya anyway
Great vid Tom ! FYI You can turn the easy entry option off where the seats go back on entry. . Also this battery doesnt apparenlty get harmed by charhing to 100% as it has cooling and a big buffer above the stated 87KWh. So you dont have to worry about limiting to 80% charge.
I’ve had my 87kWh Evolve since just after they came out and still think it’s great. Mine isn’t fussy about where I touch the wheel while on ProPilot though… just resting one finger at the bottom of the wheel keeps it happy.
I have an Ariya. It’s the same colour as yours (and I agree with what you say about it - excellent for the “free” colour). My car is the Advance trim with the smaller battery so it’s not quite as plush and doesn’t go quite as far but it’s still a nice vehicle and has plenty going for it. A couple of observations. There’s a setting where can stop the car shouting at you if you don’t have your hands at ten to two. I haven’t tried the setting yet as I’ve only recently found it but might be worth a go to see if it solves that particular issue for you. My other observation is about ePedal. Unlike the Leaf, ePedal in the Ariya doesn’t go to a complete stop - the car still creeps forward until you use the break. I wasn’t too worried about this until I drove a Leaf for the first time while my Ariya was in for its first annual service in December and I really like the way ePedal works in that car compared to the Ariya. I completely agree about the lack of limiting to 80% battery charge being an oversight. I can’t understand it and hope Nissan will add that option in a software update. Enjoyed the video!
Ooh interesting what is this setting that you can turn off on the pro pilot. I thought I had been through everything Maybe can do a video of this 😊 to show us
@@scottcameron8936 I don’t think you’re correct about that. A lithium ion battery is a lithium ion battery irrespective of whose name is on the box. Nissan haven’t magically altered the properties of the technology so the 80% guidance still applies to the Ariya making the lack of a setting to manage that inexplicable. This might explain Nissan reasoning on charging limits I found the following info How to limit charging to 80% on a later model year (2014+) Nissan Leaf Posted on November 23, 2022 Early (2011-2013) United States Nissan Leaf's had a "limit charging to 80%" feature in the dash. As a Aryia e-4orce driver I agree with most of your review, except that e-pedal doesn't take you to a complete stop, the preconditioning sets off the alarm nearly everytime in the Winter and randomly in the Summer. I was actually surprised by how well the torque vectoring levels out the lean when in sports mode and I love the rear bias when you decide to "make progress" out of a corner. I am yet to encounter the dripping tailgate or randy pigeons, just bugs.....lots and lots of squashed bugs!
Great analysis, I own the eforce, large battery and love it. Not too many pigeons here where I live but lots of crows but the crows always have a look out on a pole screeching caw, car, car, to warn the others. Maybe the pigeons can learn something.
Great video. The big problem of the car is its price. Also noticed the same as comment of fellow viewer about e-pedal not bringing to complete stop like Leaf does during test drive which is strange and off-putting.
The price literally is the price you pay for a quality car. The Ariya offers so much more than any Tesla offers you, and it's above the pack of ID4 etc. as well when it comes to refinement. Compared to other ICE cars on a comparable quality level, it really isn't expensive at all.
On E-pedal behaviour I have recently changed from BMW i3 to Ariya. With the i3 I can bring the car to a complete stop just using the accelerator pedal but as we know the Ariya E-pedal mode almost stops the car but you have to use the brake pedal to stop completely. In retrospect I like this option - 1) allows creeping when close manoeuvring is needed and 2) get auto hold on brake after pressing the brake pedal. Not an issue with the Ariya behaviour IMHO.
For the record: We drive two Ariyas (one 2WD and one e-4orce) with well over 50000Km on the clock between the two of them (and they are absolutely awesome vehicles!). Total pigeon count so far: 0. ;)
Is it worthy to wait 7 months for a e-4force AWD model? We are interested in buying one, and theres a 2WD Evolve 242 HP in stock, but we are not sure if the difference is reason enough to wait that much. We do not use the car off-road, only on motorways for family travels. Is 2WD ok? Thanks!!!
I am thinking the same. I only purchased the leaf while I waited for my model Y to arrive. By time the Tesla was delivered, I didn’t want it any more. Now, I want an upgrade, this looks like it.
Excellent review. Thorough and objective. I have admired this car since I first read about it. When I opt for fully electric it will be my choice, not because of the vehicle, but because of your frank review with the seasoning of your British sense of humour 😊
I owned a Tesla Model X before driving an e-4orce. The reliability of Ariya is much much better than a Model X. But the power of Model X gave me exciting feeling when I needed to overtake. I was a bit disappointed on the power of the dual motor Ariya but fully agreed with the review that it’s very easy and cozy in driving. Btw, the app control and the drivers convenient features of Tesla is much more advanced. Many times I didn’t switch off the power of Ariya and got out the car which I hadn’t needed to do in the Model X for 6 years. Get on and shift to D and drive, shift to P and get off are so convenient. I wish we can ask for the features by a software update in Ariya.
X Trail epower owner here. I am thinking of getting 11:49 the Ariya for my wife and Tom, your video confirms my decision. Nissan has put so much efforts in new generation models like the X trail i am having and the Ariya. Hope Nissan can bounce back and to the place where they were before. Such an underrating cars. Yes I’m afraid so apparently they can’t do an over air update mines due for its first service soon so I’ll ask for it done then . as someone else said you can change the alarm in the settings so it asks you if you want to turn the internal alarm sensor off when you switch off
Our 2020 Nissan Leaf does not obviously have the ability to charge to just 80% either. I saw a podcast at some stage that intimated that our 62 kw battery will only? actually charge and give a range of 57 kw in order to 'save' battery from degradation. Consequently we just charge to 100% if doing a longer trip, and don't worry too much.
Every little helps though and if you are keeping the car for its life and don't need a 0 to 100% range daily, why not do the thing that's best for the battery?
Thanks for a great review. I nearly bought one last year and only cancelled the order placed the previous August when I was told it “might” be delivered in June 23. By then I was also a bit worried about not having a petrol hybrid option here in Worcestershire where working public charging is sparse. I agree it is a lot of car for the money and about as much luxury as I am likely to need. I much prefer the UI and UX to a Tesla.
If it was comparable on monthly payments I would agree. However, you forgot to tell us all what insurance group it sits in?? As that is very important in Ripp-off Britain!
@alanjenkins1508 It wouldn't be expensive if we were allowed pay increases! But unfortunately the Government has decreed that all in the UK should be forced to live hand to mouth.
Yeah... As a Nissan Leaf owner, I find it very very weird, that you can't stop the charging, nor can you tell it to stop at a manually set battery percentage... For a company, that thought about so many little details, I just don't get this blatant oversight...
I think the idea is to keep it simple. The way the battery is set up, there really is no reason to stop your charge at 80%. The only situation I found myself missing said option was in the mountains, where I was on vacation, living at 1400 meters, and regardless what direction I would drive to, it would always be downhill for hundrets of meters above sea level. Charging to over 80% literally made no sense there. In day to day use however, I really do enjoy the fact that I can use the pack to it's full extent. It also makes you a lot quicker on long trips, since you don't have to charge as often. That way, Ariya actually beats an Ioniq 5. Teslas don't have a chance anyway.
During the long term test did you have any issues with the 12v battery? I have seen the forums many people have issues with the 12v battery failing and having to have the car back to the Nissan garage.
I once had the opposite problem when I went to test drive a Rover 400. Even with the seat all the way forward, I couldn’t push the clutch all the way down. And I was like 11 foot nine. Or thereabouts
I have the Ariya on my shortlist for my next car but am a bit hesitant now after you saying that you have to keep your hands at 10 to 2 on the steering wheel. That wouldn’t work for me as I have a steering ball fitted in my car and couldn’t be without it.
Test drove one of these and found the middle console screen had a horrible low resolution which isn’t acceptable at this price point. Also I found the suspension pretty horrible with the car rocking left and right quite a fair bit.
I have just passed one year an 22,000 miles of Ariya driving. I have found; I) my experience with pro pilot is a single hand anywhere on the wheel is fine ii) using remote climate from the app triggers the alarm (now fixed after a very delayed sw update) iii) after a year @nissan charge for the connect app which is disappointing when it is free for 3 years on a Leaf
The Ariya doesn't have an 80% limiter because that thinking is quite outdated now. The car handles the cell balancing and you won't do any damage charging to 100% as long as it's not sat like that for weeks on end.
Hi I took delivery of this cat on 15th January waiting on it from June of last year only having it for 2 days I could only get the full charge up to 186mile after talking to the dealership they collected the cat and took it to the showroom after having it for 2 weeks nissan ha e toldme there is nothing wrong with it and that's the range I will get I paid alot as wanted a longer range . CAR is still in dealership they are not doing anything about it . Anyone else have any problems like this
Holding the ProPilot steering wheel in only a few places? It must be broken. Normally you can hold the steering wheel anywhere. There is a steering wheel replacement campaign in Poland right now, because there was a series of steering wheels with a broken system. Report it to the service, a correct steering wheel allows you to put your hands anywhere and your hands are detected.
Model Y and Renault Zoe owner here. I laughed out loud when you said you would rather have it than the model Y. Starting at just under £45k the Y is still not a cheap car but…………how much Nissan????
[/CAPS LOCK OFF] It is reasonably efficient, but not as efficient as a Tesla Model Y. In fact, the Model Y goes further on a smaller battery. The Model Y charges twice as fast as an Ariya on a rapid charger. I'll agree that an Ariya looks more "premium", but the previous two point are short comings do not want to live with. Being significantly more expensive does not help either.
This thing is extremely inefficient… 3.8mkwh. I came across from the Kia E Niro 64kw model 4+ I had her for 3 years and did 118000 miles. I was getting on average around 4.2mkwh. The Ariya chews through juice like there is no tomorrow. Mine is the 87kw battery Evolve in Grey metallic I have had her now just coming onto a month . I can rate the drive . It is smooth and comfortable. The 19 inch wheels absorb the bumps nicely. There is a severe lack of storage in this car. The centre armrest is pointless. Nice materials adjourn the cabin but is let down by harder plastics on the lower door bins. It’s also rather pricey but you do get what you pay for. I should have gone for Nappa leather as I really do not like the seats on the Evolve . Otherwise , it’s ok.
Three nights to charge at home? What? 87kwh battery, charging 10-80% =60,9kwh, on a standard 11kw charger is 5,53h. That's about half a night, not three.
@@Electrifyingcom Thanks for the reply. That could be the case for you, but not for most people. Most homes have 3 phase power, thus charging at 11kw, and most nights will be longer than 4 hours. Not to mention that you will not want to charge to 100%, even if the car doesn't have a feature to limit SoC. But even with 7,4kw you're still going to charge 70% in 8 hours. Saying it takes three nights is misleading, and is a very niche use case, which is only applicable if you're looking to push charging costs way down.
It's a review from the UK. 3 phase in UK domestic homes is as rare as hen's teeth and one of the most popular EV electricity tariffs gives 4 hours for charging. So no it's not misleading.@@sebastiansandvik825
@@sebastiansandvik825 "Most homes have 3 phase power, thus charging at 11kw" Not in the UK. Three phase is pretty rare in domestic buildings here so the standard for home charging is 7kW. In addition, many of the electricity tariffs for EV owners here have a 4 hour period overnight that is significantly cheaper than the daytime rate so you would only charge the car at that time.
@@NickFoster Well, in that case it should be mentioned that it's UK only, and doesn't apply elsewhere. And it should be mentioned that you only charge a third of the battery in 4 hours, which is different from a night. Because now most people will think they'll need to wait 3 days to get the battery full, when in real life they'll wake up with a full battery the next morning.
There's no option to stop at 80%? This might be the only EV that can't do that. The luxury car feel is great, but it does feel expensive for a Nissan. I've seen a lot of ID.4, Mach-E and especially Model Ys in Canada, but seldom Ariyas. A shame since I think it a good package overall.
I can see a demand for after market programming out of the annoying bings, bongs, and lane keeping that plague modern cars trying to get high NCAP ratings.
I really like your review, I use to have Leaf back in 2013 when no one knew what EV is, I am thinking about getting an Ariya Evolve+ as I have a good offer, I think. can you existing owner in USA help me by telling me I am getting a good deal. I have lease offer for 350/ Month with 2500 down and buy back option after 36 month for 28K, I think it is a good deal as I get close to 4 fills on my gas car which is equaling to $250 a month. by the way there is setting on console level where you can turn off auto lock when walking away, I have this enable in my MDX and can turn it off if needed.
Hopefully you passed on the offer!!! Not the car but the "deal" specifically... is criminally bad. It's hard to believe it but lately people are scoring 2yr leases on these for under $200 and I've even seen sub $100!!! after all promotions/ rebates etcetera.
This is the car i wanted 2 years ago when i decided i was going electric. It is still to come to Australia, so i bought a gv60 instead. Sorry Nissan, love you but you dont love australia
Certainly better than a Model Y, I prefer the capacitive steering wheel to the Tesla system. ePedal doesn’t bring you to a complete stop. Matrix headlights are useful abroad.
My wife just did a 300 mile round trip to Kent and back in our Model Y and got home with 22% left from a 100% charge. That’s from a 75kwh usable battery. The option to supercharge at 250kw is reassuring too. on value for money and real world practicality- I can’t see this car or anything else overtaking a Tesla. Also there is no servicing with Tesla, how much does it cost you in fake servicing charges to maintain the Nissan warranty…
The auto dip headlights still partly dazzle the oncoming cars please don't use them they are a hazard, plus you just get lazy as if you are approaching a corner or a crest the car won't predict that you can see that there is another vehicle, get over the crest take a second to confirm there is a car. All the while the other car can't see anything
Low hanging fruit improvements I would do: * improve infotainment - it feels quite dated * increase charging speed - 170kW should be doable on the large battery * put the center console on manual rails, being motorized is silly * replace touch buttons for climate control and on center console with physical buttons * reduce the number of trims. Maybe FWD base small battery, FWD base large battery, AWD base large battery, AWD premier with optional moonroof large battery * bring back 1 pedal driving. I dont like 1pd but there's no reason not to have it
Taste can't be discussed. The Ariya has a lumpy design language in my opinion. It's not suited for my eyes. I went for the hated bZ4X, and is very happy with my choise. Especially the AWD developed together with Subaru is a hit in the Norwegian winter.
I wonder if this Nissan is particular to attracting pigeons as a bald eagle could do some serious damage. If it's species agnostic it could be interesting for bird watchers to get a closer look at the feathered buddies hopefully without them having to spend time in A&E. The Vets bills are not cheep (pun intended) and bodywork costs could be eggstortionate. I'll get my coat... oh I see you already have it.
Matrix headlights I think you mean like VW has. Weird about the pigeon problem but just means Trafalgar Square won't have as many 'bombers' flying overhead of the people below.
I find the Ariya a very practical car, the boot especially with its false floor. If it were RWD plusher suspension and a decent stereo I would have no question about going for it a 2nd time, I will be checking out Ioniq5 and the Ariya AWD, Tesla wont be getting a look in due to lack of HUD and indicator stalks (fools).
@gunaygultekin I own a Niro 2019 executive line 64 KWh and I really like this EV, but the recently not so. I think the Ioniq 5 and the Ariya are both on a higher class.... If you like the Niro EV ( not e Niro ), then Hyundai Kona EV 2023 is the better choice!
Why do the British insist on saying they are metric, like how many kilometers per kilo watt hours and then describe how many miles you can get out of a charge?
I was a nissan salesmen and I can tell you without a pitch i got this car after doing 4 hours of product knowledge. It's great.

By then I was also a bit worried about not having a petrol hybrid option here in Worcestershire where working public charging is sparse. I agree it is a lot of car for the money and about as much luxury as I am likely to need. I much prefer the UI and UX to a Tesla.
They sold 10 of them in one year in Ireland
Faster charging, larger cargo area, cheaper price?
I love mine too, same colour too.I call mine the road beast
The pigeon thing is interesting, I had the same thing with my old Leaf…
If it was comparable on monthly payments I would agree. However, you forgot to tell us all what insurance group it sits in?? As that is very important in Ripp-off Britain!
Expensive Britain.
@alanjenkins1508 It wouldn't be expensive if we were allowed pay increases! But unfortunately the Government has decreed that all in the UK should be forced to live hand to mouth.
Great video and beautiful car 😊 I would rather buy this instead of tesla 😉💪
Lovely car, but at 6ft7 I don't fit, same with the Kia ev6 and Mg5. Just not enough headroom for me to drive.
The Ariya is the most underrated EV but it was released at the wrong time. They should've had this on the market years ago. Nissan were too late.
I have one, very happy with it, flawless.
There is no rush into BEV because it's still not the majority of new care sales in most markets. And most automakers lose money on BEVs.
Test drove one of these and found the middle console screen had a horrible low resolution which isn’t acceptable at this price point. Also I found the suspension pretty horrible with the car rocking left and right quite a fair bit.
Both screens the driver and center one have the same resolution, they're the same panel twice.
whole video, we have seen 5 seconds of the dashboard... Is it that bad?
Plese keep the long term reviews coming - much preferred to the first drive day trips followed by silence.
I have just passed one year an 22,000 miles of Ariya driving. I have found;
I) my experience with pro pilot is a single hand anywhere on the wheel is fine
ii) using remote climate from the app triggers the alarm (now fixed after a very delayed sw update)
iii) after a year @nissan charge for the connect app which is disappointing when it is free for 3 years on a Leaf
How to update the sw. I need remote climate control.
Yes... it is indeed still too expensive here in Denmark.
But would you have it over an EV6?
The Ariya doesn't have an 80% limiter because that thinking is quite outdated now. The car handles the cell balancing and you won't do any damage charging to 100% as long as it's not sat like that for weeks on end.
Does this car support bidirectional charging.
Nope.
Not in Europe.
What’s it like on tyres? My Eqc destroys them
I have more than 10.000 miles on mine and still more than half tread left.
Can’t stop charging at 80% on my late 2020 Peugeot e2008, either.
Anyone else have any problems like this
I do about 330 miles easily every charge with my Ariya on warm temps and 55 mph max.
Great review. Thank you
Those poor pigeons! I've happily been driving my Ariya for 2 months now and thankfully have not killed any birds.
Finally, a positive feature for the flat grille lol
And it's quality building, otherwise it's need a paint job! 👌
This thing is extremely inefficient…
3.8mkwh.
I came across from the Kia E Niro 64kw model 4+
I had her for 3 years and did 118000 miles.
I was getting on average around 4.2mkwh.
The Ariya chews through juice like there is no tomorrow.
Mine is the 87kw battery Evolve in Grey metallic
I have had her now just coming onto a month .
Chews the juice? I do more than 300 miles on mine easily each charge.
Rapid charging is what degrades the battery. It's regulated for that reason, I presume.
It looks good, but I really don't like those pressure switches. Not luxury, not premium, in my view.
Three nights to charge at home? What? 87kwh battery, charging 10-80% =60,9kwh, on a standard 11kw charger is 5,53h. That's about half a night, not three.
I'm charging for four hours a night at 7kW. 28kWh a night.
I like a lot of things about this car, but seats in advance version, are not comfortable for long journeys.
Good looking car but so expensive
I experienced a similar thing with car a few years ago. It was very unsettling.
I lease a Model 3 and have been in a friend's Ariya several times. I quite like the Ariya but wouldn't consider swapping our Model 3 for one!
If Nissan thinks they can jump to Posh SUVs without putting further effort into the LEAF or smaller EVs, then it's not looking good for them at all
Isn't a new Leaf coming this year?
@@benrgroganheard next year
I don't have the option of charging at home. If I did, I'd choose the Ariya.
This is the car i wanted 2 years ago when i decided i was going electric. It is still to come to Australia, so i bought a gv60 instead. Sorry Nissan, love you but you dont love australia
The launch was delayed by two years because of chip shortages from COVID. I have no idea how automakers decide the allocation among regions.
@@yo2trader539 i get it, but it wont be here till 2025, which makes it 3 years out of date on arrival
However it is a iccle bit pricey they do need to bring down their prices like Tesla have been doing and hopefully that will come...
Why don't you go and work at the Nissan planning department and tell them how they should do it properly
Try A Skoda Enyaq.Which, the Consumers Association, said it is better and cheaper too
I can do 300 miles with my Ariya easily, and annual service costs me about 120€, which is fair enough on my book.
Car mats cost a fortune for what they are aftermarket fit as well and are just as good at fraction of price
Thank you.
It's still to bloody pricey
What do you think they'll try to sell the EV juke or qashqai for?
Starting to make them in Sunderland soon
It's just the price. Take it or leave it. I can't afford a Bentley, but I don't whinge about it.
That's the problem with every "Tesla Rival" 😕🙄
It has even made Kia/Hyundai a rival for BMWs and Teslas
@@charlesbridgford254 there's every reason to give out about the poor state of health the auto market is in.
Take it or leave it. It won't make the car any cheaper.
I applaud any car that gets people into EVs but £54K? Wow.
I just got one in the US for 39k (engage+ eforce40 awd) between tax credit and dealer discount, $1000 off for Infiniti owner loyalty too.
Wow! Great price. Where was that?
Still too expensive. Battery massive and the range is poor overall. And when I have seen one on the road I always think “Why the long face?!”😂.
Low hanging fruit improvements I would do:
* improve infotainment - it feels quite dated
* increase charging speed - 170kW should be doable on the large battery
* put the center console on manual rails, being motorized is silly
* replace touch buttons for climate control and on center console with physical buttons
* reduce the number of trims. Maybe FWD base small battery, FWD base large battery, AWD base large battery, AWD premier with optional moonroof large battery
* bring back 1 pedal driving. I dont like 1pd but there's no reason not to have it
Infotainment is confirmed to be changed to Android Automotive in the near future.
Very interesting that it attracts pigeons
Totally unbiased video here 😂
I would take the Ioniq 5 over the Ariya. And then there is the new Juniper Model Y coming this summer.
Pigeons sat in hedges cooing warning Aria 😂😂
I find the Ariya a very practical car, the boot especially with its false floor. If it were RWD plusher suspension and a decent stereo I would have no question about going for it a 2nd time, I will be checking out Ioniq5 and the Ariya AWD, Tesla wont be getting a look in due to lack of HUD and indicator stalks (fools).
"...but take the caps lock off so it doesn't look like you're shouting". His knowledge of Tesla fanboys is almost alarmingly accurate.
Nice car, great tech, but absolutely not made for 6 ft + people. First thing to check before pushing your analysis further.
Why not?
There are a few videos on YT with 6’6”+ men sitting comfortably inside the Ariya
I stop afer 60 seconds. Forget home charging, I do not see any Nissan deticated charging points anywhere in the world lol
Nissan was first with dedicated rapid charging in the UK actually. It was open to all though. And free to use! Those were the days....
Saved u 9mins. Google Bard summaries this video as “I’d rather this car over a Model Y due to its quality interior and design”
I don't hate it, but it is overpriced compared to other EVs of its size and capability.
So everything is good… then they build in features designed just to be annoying. I’ll stick with my second hand iPace then
Seems like a car for me ... I'm not particularly fond of pigeons. 😏😉
RIP Pigeons 🕊️🩸🩸☠️☠️☠️
Dull as dishwater but give the people what they want.
Pretty easy answer to the Tesla question: It's not owned by an absolute bell end.
😂 100%!
Wich EV is better?
Team: Ioniq 5
or
Team: Ariya
My personal choice: Ioniq 5!
Kia ev6 (ioniq 5 a close 2nd).
How about Kia Niro?
@danielsimpson8371
If you take a longer look in terms of 1 year, the Ioniq 5 has grown on me over the EV 6. The EV 6 is still a great EV!
@gunaygultekin
I own a Niro 2019 executive line 64 KWh and I really like this EV, but the recently not so. I think the Ioniq 5 and the Ariya are both on a higher class....
If you like the Niro EV ( not e Niro ), then Hyundai Kona EV 2023 is the better choice!
Shock horror, having to lean forward just won't do. Do you have a butler at home? He obviously carries you to the car & puts you in it.
Why do the British insist on saying they are metric, like how many kilometers per kilo watt hours and then describe how many miles you can get out of a charge?
I'm a tesla owner and sorry tesla is the best! I love my model 3 the old one! ❤
Navigator software is terrible
Wait Tesla is an American brand with chinese level quality. No competition at all.
... Or get a kia ev6 which is cheaper, has all the same features but non of the negatives of the Ariya.
No rear wiper or fluffy carpets though, eh?
