It’s scary thinking about 20 years from now how all these E vehicles held up, screens, batteries and anything else they make to look cool at the moment.
Nice looking car, much better than the Mach E and (and much better named!) nice size, slightly shorter than the VAG MEB platform sharers. Only concern is the bluff, high rise front end - can't see it doing much for the range. Speaking as someone who drives an Enyaq 80 Sportline with the MEB platform - careful driving gives me around 310 miles in the summer - be interested to see how this Explorer actually compares.
That front end is going to be pebble dashed in no time at all unless Ford fit PPF to it. I can already hear the complaints to Ford saying the paint is too soft look at the state of my front end. 🤔
@abraxastulammo9940 A quick check on Auto trader comparing Volvo XC40 and Hyundai Kona does indicate evs are in a higher insurance group than their ice equivalent so that bears out what the article today in Reuters is saying. Tesla mod 3 is 48U according to Auto Trader which is also pretty high!
Great review copy cat of the XC40 another great car for safety and reliability still can't wait to see what Toyota produce between now and 2027 when I buy my next car hopefully a EV crossover or suv let's see. Warranty reliability distance charge rate and times but most importantly the cost of regular wear and tear including the cost of parts n labour are very important to me as I do 100 miles minimum per day 7 days a week.
Love the interior styling, looks very futuristic and nice. This is the only EV car I've seen that also makes me like the non-grill front end. I am a sucker for the Ford Explorer in general though. Shame they aren't introducing it in the US for now.
Interesting looking SUV, well styled. Some minor criticisms and comments: I like the adjustable sat nav screen, which would be even better if it could also tilt towards the driver. Because of the borrowed VW platform it’s unfortunate that it hasn’t got a front trunk, particularly given the average sized boot. In Tesla this is a genuinely useful innovation. Again, because of the VW platform, it’s also a wide car, which doesn’t help with parking and narrow streets and country lanes. 250 miles actual range is the minimum acceptable in a modern electric family car. I would hope that the bigger battery version can manage 300 miles plus.
In Europe where this will only be sold supercharger networks doesn’t matter as it’s quite poor. There are far more regular chargers and any car can use any charger anyways. It’s all standardized by law.
Would be nice to see some affordable electric cars like a fiesta or focus replacement. We need more small and affordable electric cars …

I think Ford and VW are perfect partners, no enemies and no competitors. Ford has massive problems in Europe selling cars, so using the base from VW makes sense to re-start the brand and make it bigger end better.
Looks great but I feel the cockpit is a fail starting with the moving screen… pretty sure it will break/ get stuck at some point. Lack of physical buttons is also a thumbs down
So, this is the new "estate," aka "wagon." A car that's taller than need be. I'd say it's stylish and the interior is fine. They didn't overdo the ambient lighting and while it isn't distinctive, it's pleasant.
Looks better inside and outside than vw id4/5... I would definitely get this instead. Though this should be cheaper than Mach-e.. though maybe not all people want a "mustang"...
Its interesting that so many of these Legacy EVs are all the same car with different "styling" goes to show how far behind all these companies really are. They are all teaming up, which tells you they are behind
VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat are all part of the VW Group. The MEB platform will eventually be replaced by SSP - the scalable system platform. It would be unwise for all these companies to develop seperate platforms when you can focus your ressources on one project, especially when you're playing in the same team anyways. Audi and Porsche for example are developing the PPE platform for their high end premium cars and have already joined efforts to develop the J1 used for the taycan and e-tron gt. Ford's move to help scale VW's technology does come to a surprise, however they will only use the MEB for about two Ford Models until they have their own platform.(edit: spelling)
Looks OK. Better than the VWs if not Skodas or Cupras. But......wider than a Model Y!! It's hard enough already getting out at the local Tesco car park! And as for touchscreens and no buttons. Don't get me started.
I honestly prefer the two step process to lower the rear windows. The amount of times I lowered the rear windows instead of the front is too many to count
This is an excellent comment. I haven’t heard it from anyone else and hadn’t thought of it myself, it’s extremely valid because I’m one of those that are frequently dropping the rear windows instead of the front!
Having done over 10k km in id3/born, I can confidently tell you that the VW window control panel does not in any way stop you from accidentally opening the rear windows; as the switch between rear and front is capacitive, you hit it accidentally when you're trying to find the rockers, meaning you have to do the same process you do now (return windows up) THEN look down, find the capacitive F/R switch, hit it, then try again. I promise, this is not a solution to anything.
We used to get the Explorer back in late 90s and early 00s. Chewed Petrol for fun...It was a class above this and was seen as a cheap Range Rover competitor. It was also infamous for the Firestone Tyre debacle. They used to fail the elk rollover test and the tyres where also prone to failing. Firestone blamed the Explorer and Ford blamed Firestone. This was the reason Ford stopped using Firestone as a Tyre supplier..
When the marketing department are only just out of nappies 😅🤦♂️. Someone should of checked the Ford history books before going back to the Explorer name in the UK
Hey Rory great video, but sadly as good as this looks it’s more likely to be fighting against the rivals from the likes of Kia and Hyundai with the Niro and Kona as that’s more the size it sounds, if that’s the case with a range of around 250 miles it’s going to hard for people to say that the Ford is where the money should go to, with both the Korean rivals able to to do far more range and the Tesla model Y being even better on range again, I can’t see this selling well if it’s priced near the £30K-£50K especially if they skimp on range and tech in the lower trim variants. It’s a shame as like the EV5 I love the look of the Explorer but, there are better sounding EVs either out there or coming out soon, it will also be competing against the likes of the Fisher Ocean which is due for UK shores in July as the right hand drive models are already in production.
@@_TrueDesire_ that depends on the user, those that home charge don’t care about ccs charge speed being as most would have a break from driving just as long as it would take to charge at a ccs. Had my explorer 23yrs and still love it if this is anything as good then ford will have another winner hard luck tesla 😢
WHY do manufacturers keep putting screens vertical smh. Horizontal is the only way to go on an electric car. Consuming media with a vertical screen SUCKS
Love the look, welcome back FORD
Car companies needs to understand that no physical buttons thing is a deal-breaker. I just want to set my AC temperature without diverting my eyes from the road, man:(
It’s scary thinking about 20 years from now how all these E vehicles held up, screens, batteries and anything else they make to look cool at the moment.
And the tech will only continue to get better :)
This is a vehicle class below Model Y, Enyak et all. More around the size of the still to be released new Kona and MG ZS I think.
Beautiful styling. Looks better than ID4.
The screen is movable for the same reason as Mercedes-AMG SL. The storage is only secondary
I like the design, clearly American and a real distinguisher to other design languages of EVs in the global market.
I don't understand why all constructers made all touch screen and deleted physical buton for essential interaction like (AC, Volume...)
Shits cheap
Finally, I can keep my Haribo safe. Well done, Ford
Impressive design, of course not a production version. I can't imagine how expensive a rear end fender-bender would be with the lack of bumper!
Auto Trader released their UA-cam video with a fully working REAL car. Check that out
It's apparently worse than thought, the batteries are not repairable so written off.
@@Beorn. Batteries are between axles, so won't ever be damaged.
@@Beorn. FUD.
6:35 They should have installed 5 Window buttons for good measure! 😁
man, i hate these new type of rims (electric version ones).
Interesting looking SUV, well styled.
Some minor criticisms and comments:
I like the adjustable sat nav screen, which would be even better if it could also tilt towards the driver.
That's Ford flex size (if that); not explorer. Y still wins with 330 Mile range and superchargers
In Europe where this will only be sold supercharger networks doesn’t matter as it’s quite poor. There are far more regular chargers and any car can use any charger anyways. It’s all standardized by law.
Will this be assembled in Cologne, Germany? The original Explorer's 4L V6 was made in Cologne.
Mostly excited for the Puma, and hopefully the EV future brings the Puma stateside as well!
The no buttons would be a deal breaker for me, it looks better than some EVs but still not great compared to other cars.
Apart from interior designers, who actually wants these capacitive buttons?
Looks great but I feel the cockpit is a fail starting with the moving screen… pretty sure it will break/ get stuck at some point. Lack of physical buttons is also a thumbs down
So, this is the new "estate," aka "wagon." A car that's taller than need be. I'd say it's stylish and the interior is fine. They didn't overdo the ambient lighting and while it isn't distinctive, it's pleasant.
This isn’t an estate….
Looks better inside and outside than vw id4/5... I would definitely get this instead. Though this should be cheaper than Mach-e.. though maybe not all people want a "mustang"...
Great review! Unfortunately the car looks terrible...
I see Rory -> I press play. It’s just that simple!
Its interesting that so many of these Legacy EVs are all the same car with different "styling" goes to show how far behind all these companies really are. They are all teaming up, which tells you they are behind
You dont know what a platform is!They dont use the same chassi just the same tech!
@@brunoheggli2888 so. It’s the same car. Same everything that makes an EV and EV.
Ford appear to have given up.
Hope this model makes it to the US! 🎉
A long time ago, VW and Ford became a single company in Brazil called Autolatina. The joint-venture lasted very little.
So if you want an ID4 with a ford logo this is the car to buy.
Nice Ford Explorer Design by a romanian 🇷🇴 Guy 😎🤗🙌 chapeau Liviu T.
OOOOOh goody, another SUV. Just what the world needs. Am I excited? No.
Well the auto market isn’t based on your personal feelings. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s billions of other people in the world
@@Vegasjames. That's why I was only expressing my own opinion. Thank you.
Hey Ford, we'd also like this here in the US. And I seem to remember reading somewhere that you're a US based auto manufacturer.
1:33 Wow, 480 km of range at 85 % 😅
Bring it to the US! The wheels look super nice IMO.
I love most cars..but this is ugly….
The REAR window control feature makes no sense at all, some innovations are simply a step backwards.
all of this is just evidence that we are about to watch a few brands die post ICE era.
I like the looks of this vehicle, good job Ford/Volkswagen..
Good looking SUV, reminds of a Range Rover.
A What!?! Ford/VW…blasphemy!
@@albertdavis86 yes I agree. Much better are Peugeot/ Citroen/ Fiat : Stellantis cars …..?
Drove one last week was very pleasant actually.
Anybody know if the OS will be the same as mach-E or based on Android Automotive?
2:24 Ford should have put an engineer on it to tilt the radiator and free up space for their signature frunk (like Tesla does it).
I completely lost it when I saw the two button window switch from VW
Hey Rory great video, but sadly as good as this looks it’s more likely to be fighting against the rivals from the likes of Kia and Hyundai with the Niro and Kona as that’s more the size it sounds, if that’s the case with a range of around 250 miles it’s going to hard for people to say that the Ford is where the money should go to, with both the Korean rivals able to to do far more range and the Tesla model Y being even better on range again, I can’t see this selling well if it’s priced near the £30K-£50K especially if they skimp on range and tech in the lower trim variants.
It’s a shame as like the EV5 I love the look of the Explorer but, there are better sounding EVs either out there or coming out soon, it will also be competing against the likes of the Fisher Ocean which is due for UK shores in July as the right hand drive models are already in production.
worthless charging on Niro and Kona, they are left behind.
Can you Imagine that they killed the Fiesta for this? It's nothing special, it's yet another boring, electric crossover
@@_TrueDesire_ that depends on the user, those that home charge don’t care about ccs charge speed being as most would have a break from driving just as long as it would take to charge at a ccs. The range to battery size is more important to users than how fast the battery can charge if they’re just going to have to stop again because the car doesn’t have the range.
@@marijnmolenaar2848 yeah at least the Fiesta had a specific sector and fans that would choose it over the next new hatchback trying to take its place. I just don’t get the point of making the Mach-e and the F150 lightening in house and being successful to then basically rebadge an id4 that shows nothing under the skin that makes the other Ford EVs as good as they are, the impressive frunk and range of the F150 and the dynamic driving feel of the Mach-e, for me the Explorer is a good looking failure that should have been the fiesta EV
@@WEZ4136 VAG offers almost 2X the speed and Kia/Hyundai's flagships offer 800V charging. If the cars would cost €35-40K sure but when they are close to 55-60K it's a big no no.
Everyone I know demands minimum 100kW, preferably faster. Even if you had ~500kW charging capability doesn't mean YOU need to pick the fastest charger available. I'm one of those that can't charge at home so I want minimum 300 kW and 80-100 kWh before even thinking about buying one, and solid state tech.
The graphics on this video are wild. Great lighting
It's like a Range Rover or Evoque from a side view.
I'm sure as a Ford it is lovely. Unfortunately, unlike the likes of the Fiesta and Focus which Ford are getting rid of, I'm not going to be able to afford to buy one even if I wanted to. Not for your average Joe. So I'll leave it up to wealthier others to decide if this car is preferable to other cars in this increasingly competitive segment.
Even VW are ditching capacitive buttons in new models. That alone would be a breaker for me. Also I'd want a "mock" grill cos the front of it looks plain stupid
Let's hope that infotainment small television (it's way bigger than a screen) works better than the F-150 Lightning infotainment screens, because they have been failing inside the first 6 months.
So GM and Ford in general are fully swinging to electric i see
Like they have a choice ?
@@robsmall6466of course they do. Manufacturers have the ultimate choice on where to go...they just leaning to cash grab in the europian EV market
@@T0NYMANUEL They don't unfortunately. Legislation - they are legally forced to go electric. Don't agree with it but it's being forced on all of us unless a big dose of common sense turns up
@@robsmall6466 Yup. I hope that we find some way to produce a carbon neutral fuel, compatible with the current ICE cars. Electric cars are just not sustainable or good enough: mining process (mineral depletion/human rights), weight, charging time, worse performance in the cold, shorter life expectancy of the batteries...
@@jamesfilosa6277 Agree 100%. Don't mind people buying them but they should be part of a wider ecosystem. Petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric, hydrogen and anything else
Owning a current Explorer, I can’t see why they call this an Explorer when it plainly isn’t. This is THREE sizes down and not a 7-seater.
