Great episode. There’s a fascinating sort of poetry in this one. Two encounters with the opposite ends of the humanity spectrum. One resulted in deep conversation, kindness and an embrace. The other resulted in literal mud and frustration. It’s funny how the universe can often materialize what people carry inside. This would be a fun campfire convo some day. What an excellent video capturing my favorite trail. I keep trying to find one that tops it, but haven't been able to do so yet. Planning on a trip back there in 2026 ... it's gonna be tough to wait after watching this. Also, I've got to say, the way you narrated the situation with the guys in the Tacoma was perfect. You helped 'em out, but didn't let them off the hook. I hope they end up watching this video and that, by doing so, it shifts their perspective on how they treat the people and places they visit moving forward.

When I started my current job, I was 39 years old, and I felt like I had all the time int he world to do the things I wanted to do. I'm going to turn 63 next week, and it feels like the past 24 years has gone by in the blink of an eye. I keep telling my family and friends that I feel like I'm running out of time, and all I hear is, "You're being silly, you need to work as long as you can. Build up that 401k so that you can enjoy your retirement!" One of my closest friends at work passed away last May, having developed cancer and losing the fight three weeks before his retirement date. You are absolutely right. Have your adventures as you find them. Don't save them until the end of your life, because it may come faster than you think. As for me, I bought a Jeep TJ last weekend which is in perfect shape except for the engine. A replacement engine is already on the way, and it will be ready to go in a couple of months. And if I have to go have my adventures alone, well, I guess I'll be spending more time talking with myself!
A few years ago a guy who delivered tires for the fleet I work on (he is around 15 years older than me) was talking with me, and that Summer we had a bunch of weddings to attend. While I wasn't complaining about the events because weddings are fun usually, and they were friends getting married. But there were 3-4 of them back to back and getting expensive. Stressing out loud with him more than complaining is a better way to say it. Anyway, he said "I remember all of the weddings we used to go to. Enjoy them man, because one day the weddings stop and the invites start to become funerals". I will never forget him saying that and it really did make me start appreciating time differently.
Dude, you did a solid when you didn't have to...and you did a great job of communicating the reality and expectations of the situation. Most people that are rude seem to turn out to be oblivious...i think proven here. There's a ton of reality seeking and wisdom available in this video. Thank you.
Such a beautiful trail. Glad you had a chance to finally run it. Sad, that some people don't get the importance of space on the trail and staying in approved areas. I have always tried to help others on the trail. I am glad we have a 12,000# winch, traction boards and a kinetic rope. I hope it was just inexperience in a rented vehicle. Unfortunately, I have run into people who tear stuff up and drive aggressively on purpose without any remorse even when called out. Most people on the trails are like the other friend you met. I try to be like him. Peace.
Another great episode! I think those guys got exactly the right treatment. Jesse taught them a lesson about karma when he declined to help them, and then you taught them a lesson about grace when you DID help them. With any luck the dual-lesson made an impression and they'll be better on future trips. Please tell me Tariq has a youtube channel or podcast or something we can find him on!
So thats kind of the weird thing. Tariq was kind of his own man. He prefers to travel alone typically, and just be with his thoughts. When he left, none of us got his contact info. I honestly don't even know if he had a phone. Why not a single one of us got his information is a mystery in its own right. I really hope to cross paths with him again but he's a world traveler so I am not confident that will happen.
Wonderful video - I love the narration and your gift for storytelling. The journey is bigger than the trail; it’s the experiences and the people you meet along the way. The secret is to keep your eyes and heart open so that you don’t miss it!!
Great video. Two things: 1) A kinetic rope should never be used to try to yank a vehicle that has been buried in mud. You will break things. 2) If I have to use my Maxtrax to help someone get unstuck, they're paying the full cost to replace them. They will always ruin the nubs with wheel spin.
I would have sided with Jesse more if he didnt meet Tariq. That dude was such a balanced and peaceful person I felt like I needed to be more forgiving to those guys, even though they were in the wrong.

That is going to be awesome man! I see you keep mentioning the TetonX, I had actually looked into them a few years ago before I bought my Conqueror. Awesome looking trailers!

All they probably do is making a fun story out of it that they tell their friends. People like this only learn it when it hurts them and thats most of the time money.
I did report it. Multiple sand washes they werent supposed to be in, tailgating mountain bikers (which I have no doubt they did with the dozens of other bikes on the trail as well). I hate to be a snitch, but these guys are getting our trails closed.
@@IndependenceOverland I’d feel weird about calling them in too on some level for what it’s worth. However I think the only way we can really keep these trails open and accessible long term is to call each other out and hold folks accountable from the ground up. Thx for reporting them. Hopefully those guys learned something from this. They’re so lucky you offered to help them despite everything. I dunno if I would’ve been that kind in your situation tbh and might have just called a tow for them (but that just speaks to your guys’ character)
Hey Tyler, great video as usual. I'm curious how the raised air intake on the Trailhunter is treating you? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm worried the turbo noise will be a constant annoyance on slower trails with the windows down, especially for the passenger. Thoughts?
Yes, the snorkel does get old if you want the windows down. Its pretty loud. But if you intend to add any sort of snorkel I am sure it will do the same. I don't regret having it, because this truck will get used a lot in environments where it will be beneficial. Also, resale with this truck will be far better vs a TRD offroad with a DIY snorkel install.
What wasn't on camera is after they mentioned what vehicle they were in, Jesse said no and I told them we needed a minute to discuss. They were made aware of how they acted was next level asshole behavior. If Tariq wasn't there, I probably would have just said we cant help. But that guy had a way of inspiring being kind to other people. I guess at the end of the day it made for a decently good story.
I enjoy watching your channel. Your father’s flooring is amazing. Would a a bone stock 4Runner TRD Pro be able to make it through at least the beginning of the white rim trail? Any feedback, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We are planning to do a short portion of the trail if we can get at least a day permit.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. any way you can share what fuel efficiency you've been getting and achieved on the trip. i'm a little concerned about the limited range i've been hearing about.
It’s not great with the 35s. Probably 14-15 on the highway in my experience, under 65mph and you can get 16-17 on a good day but it’s hard to be easy on the throttle on these trucks. And I don’t mean you just want to drive fast. Since you have full torque at 1700rpm it’s hard to drive lightly. I wish the Eco mode would really adjust this, because I do feel it’s possible to get better fuel economy. In 4x4 I’m not sure what it is, but it’s not good haha.
Not that I'm blaming the rental companies, but they really need to educate these people better on trail etiquette and off-road driving before they send them out with a 4WD for the first time ever. We see this type of behavior all the time around the Alpine Loop and Lake City where my girlfriend's parents live, and a lot of time it's rental Jeeps or SxSes. Out of state drivers too, but you can't do much about that. Rental companies could easily educate their renters before handing over the keys.
Element-Outdoors educates their clients best as possible before they head out on their adventures. Element-Outdoors also provides trip guiding where folks have a route planned. These renters were bad apples. You can try to educate trail etiquette and ethics but not all people as we saw in this video respect the land or businesses.
A little birdy told them after this event that they should take a very close look at the underside of the truck and the shocks to make sure there was no major damage hiding somewhere.
I am on Firestone Mestination MT2 35x12.5, The silver Tacoma is on Nitto Recon Grappler 35x11.5, and the Fj I actually don't remember what I put on that thing. I actually built that Fj several years back and Jessica bought it from me. They are 285/75/16.
I think you guys should look at things from a different perspective. I have ridden adventure, bikes, all through Colorado and the white rim trail many times. What irritates met most is when I get behind somebody who is either oblivious or just refuses to move out of my way dusting me for miles crawling very slowly and won’t move out of the way for literally 10 seconds. Based on your story, to the Tacoma, it doesn’t matter why your buddy on the bicycle didn’t pull over. Did he sound the horn? I would be a rate if a cyclist going several miles an hour pretended to ignore me and or not get out of my way and I would ride their ass too. Then you blast them the whole time about going off trail and being illegal, which they may have or may not have been yet collectively east towards the end you all surmised that they were legally on the wash. Entitlement is a two-way street.
I’m not perfect, and I try to be pretty self aware about this kind of stuff. These dudes were being total assholes to everyone, not just people on bikes. They were disrespecting people, the land, and the rental truck they were in. When they passed us all at about 30mph you could hear that suspension bottoming out, and hard. From my observations, they didn’t care about much that day. And at the end my friend said he didn’t “think” it was illegal. What he “thought” was incorrect, as I called to verify. You can’t just go off trail and go wherever you want, imagine that.
Rescued so many over the years but now we just make a call for that type off traveler they just steal your time and potentially damage you or your equipment.
I will be doing a video on that soon. Both have their pros and cons, hard to say as of now. The Fj is so specialized for my use that the truck has some catching up to do.
Yeah had any been around, I may have done just that. But the sun was setting and trail traffic was slowing down for the day. That was my plan for the next day though, that's why I didn't head back in first thing in the morning.
Great vid. Hopefully those guys learned some humility and will be more responsible in the future. It's just a few morons ruining off highway recreation for everyone.
Not sure if I understand the hostility of captain poopy pants with the winch. Sounds to me like they were just tourists who didn't understand trail etiquette, not deliberate assholes trying to run you guys off the road. You're going to leave someone stranded in the middle of the night over that? Crazy.
It’s not like they were in Death Valley in July. They were in a camper, camping either way. You’re right, they didn’t know trail etiquette but the National Park system literally emails you a video that’s “required” to watch. There’s no good excuse for their bullshit. And as someone who saw how they were blasting down the trail, hearing the shocks bottoming out, it reminded me a lot of kids who took dad’s truck for a spin while he was out of town. So yup, we tried, but ultimately left them stranded. The poor things had a whole 12 pack they had to get through down by the river 😢.
So, you criticize others for their behavior, yet you fly an illegal drone in a National Park just for the sake of social media attention? That's quite contradictory. While it's certainly frustrating to see people driving off-trail in a wash, operating a drone in a National Park is far more disruptive. I've done the White Rim Trail a few times, including once with a rental Jeep that had street tires.
Are you familiar with this NP? I believe the drone footage started after 34:08 (about to exit the NP) and the route they took was clockwise. That puts them by White Rim/Mineral Canyon Rd. which is outside the NP. Not all White Rim Rd is in the NP.
@@rolandw.545 Yep. The drone footage was clearly out of the NP. If I was unitymind, I would delete that post. Is he one of the bozos in the Tacoma, or a generic troll?
If you actually watched the video, you would see that the entire video up until the very end did not have drone footage. If you have actually done the trail a few times, you would know there's a big boundary sign. It changes to BLM at 38.50005, -110.0244 - Lucky for you, you can jump on OnX Offroad and with the code: overland20 for 20% off a subscription and then you can actually know what your talking about. You can compare my footage with their 3d maps to prove yourself wrong, and also see boundaries of BLM, National Parks, and even private land. 😘

I really liked this latest video - awesome - if you get a second can you tell me the tires all 3 trucks are running
While I would have agreed to help them out, I think I would have immediately turned around once I saw their situation. They were STUCK
I would have been better off doing that, since that thing didnt budge 😂
Which vehicle do you prefer between the FJ or the Tacoma?
I will be doing a video on that soon. Both have their pros and cons, hard to say as of now. The Fj is so specialized for my use that the truck has some catching up to do.
@@IndependenceOverland I figured that but I think it would be interesting the pro's and con's of each.
I think I would have flagged a park ranger to help them get recovered and let them face the consequences.
Bro owes you some boards 🫠
Haha they didn’t get too messed up. I’m get a fresh set for the new truck anyway 😉
@ how many miles of traveling have you racked up this summer? I bet 8k?!
Karma… 🙏
Hate saying it but Karma at best when you disrespect others by acting like fools.
First you should ask if he obtained permission to fly the drone, which you can do, before accusing him of doing so illegally.
Should watch part 1 as he did mention he received permits and documentation to get approval to fly in the NP lol.
It changes to BLM at 38.50005, -110.0244 -
Lucky for you, you can jump on OnX Offroad and with the code: overland20 for 20% off a subscription and then you can actually know what your talking about. You can compare my footage with their 3d maps to prove yourself wrong, and also see boundaries of BLM, National Parks, and even private land.
