    Charlie Sheen gave a surprisingly good performance as SETI astronomer and Ron Silver was always top notch as a villain. I miss these kind of movies with respectable budget at the time (25 million dollars) and solid cast and storyline. Director David Twohy of course went and made Pitch Black and created Riddick franchise later, but The Arrival and his 2002 supernatural submarine thriller Below are definitely worth watching.

    Fantastic Sci-Fi alien conspiracy movie for the mid 90's... I had heard this movie was an inspiration to a video game series like Half-Life and that Gordon Freeman's look was based on Charlie Sheen's look in this movie

    Loved The Arrival. Back in the mid nineties I was working in a night club. Got to chatting with one of the girls who worked their who promptly talked me into having an "acid night" at her place. And this was the first movie she put on. It was clearly straight to video, but even the straight to video stuff back then was decent. Sheen made another movie a couple of years before that, was was also straight to video kinda deal. Above the law I think it was called. It was also great stuff. Man, I really miss the 90s when even the low budget stuff was awesome. You could walk into your local video rental and find a classic that youd never heard of before. Like "Cube". That movie just came out of nowhere and me and my buddies all loved it. The 90s was just wall to wall awesome for entertainment.

    I remember a sci-fi novel where Earth was infiltrated by aliens, who Earth was also fighting in space. The infiltrators could be discovered by X-ray, a blood sample, or a genius thing: A handshake, because they could never quite imitate the firmness in the human hand. I thought that was such a good detail to include. The military and other important personnel develop the habit of always shaking hands.

    • @tservo3k
      @tservo3k 8 місяців тому +2

      That's slightly similar to the aliens infiltrators in the series " The Invaders", where the main protagonist could identify them due to their odd handshake (caused by an error in their disguises).

    I've seen this movie twice, the first time was randomly on terrestrial TV about 15 years ago and then watched it again about 5 years ago on streaming. I sometimes disagree with certain aspects of what you say but for this we are in total agreement. Slightly iffy special effects, but well paced, great storytelling, characters who felt really and not a hollywood version of a character. It was a very intimate film in terms of the characters. I expected you to make a special comment on Charlie Sheen's performance. There was a lot of depth to this more serious performance, for someone who was and is so well known for comedy, he gave this role his all.

    But I always thought that there was a good reason for why they couldn’t get around freely

    They needed the skin suite to preserve their heat. And that’s why Charlie Sheens character nearly overheated when he was wearing it…

    Looks like a cool movie! I can buy that they need to heat up the planet. If the aliens disguised as humans are advance agents they could be modified to endure a variety of temperatures. And alien reproduction could require more specific temperatures. There's a bird in real life that makes a nest so thick that the bird can control the temperature to within a few degrees. So for them to come to the planet they might want more control of the environment.

    • @_Jay_Maker_
      @_Jay_Maker_ 8 місяців тому

      Yeah, that's how I've always felt about it as well. If the aliens are, say, in the midst of a population boom and they need to offload a _load_ of population onto a planet in a "short" span of time - say, 20-40 years - it makes sense. Ditto for them just turning the planet into some kind of processing station where they're here to mine the planet's natural mineral resources, so they just turn it into a hot rock. Yeah, a great film for speculation for sure, particularly considering the era it came out, where "conspiracy" was a form of entertainment instead of being real life like it is these days.

    in the 90s, there was a lot of TV shows and movies about aliens and sometime even conspiracies. Shows like the X-Files, Lone Gunmen and Millennium. Movies like contact, Men in black, Fire in the sky the Arrival, and Species are looked back on as a period where we could be suspicious about not being alone in the universe and suspicious about the government.

Because let's be honest, while watching this, few people will think "this is a good quality film" but many will say "this is unreasonably fun". Once it gets rolling, it feels like it could fly apart at any moment, but somehow it holds together.

    I liked "The Arrival", but it was definitely overshadowed by the release of "Independence Day" shortly after. The direct to video sequel, "Arrival 2", was definitely not as good and much lower budget - it came across to me as a potential pilot for a TV series that never happened. They used the same vortex ball thing, but the effect was really cheesy compared to the first movie. Also, I distinctly remember a scene where they drive a vehicle through a plate glass window, and you can see it start to shatter well before they drive through it, which means someone screwed up the timing of the special effect and they probably couldn't afford another one, so they had to use it. Funny thing, the sequel was rated R (the first one was PG-13), and the ONLY reason I could see for it being rated R was they very briefly showed full frontal nudity of a woman (who turns out to be an alien).

    When I was in high school, I LOVED this movie. I rented it from my local video store (remember those?) a bunch of times just to rewatch it. I was a big fan of Charlie Sheen, and a huge fan of Ron Silver, and I loved the conspiracy and cover-up and the (rightful) paranoia.

    This was such a cool, but underrated, movie. I really enjoyed it! I'm glad you reviewed it and gave it some love.

    I've always thought Sheens look in the film would make a GREAT Gordan Freeman. One of my favorite films. The type of pacing this movie has is sorely needed in todays movie.

    I remember one Sunday morning in 1996 I saw Siskel and Ebert review this positively so i went to see it that day. It's great! And the corporate media totally ignored it (probably because, well, they're evil), so it flopped. I watched it for a second time a few months ago and it's just as good. Thanks for reviewing.
    (I couldn't make it through the sequel, which is ridiculously bad.)

    I love The Arrival! I've watched it hundreds of times since I first saw it in 1996. It was made back when storytelling was the primary objective of movies, not pushing "the message".

    There is one thing that makes this movie highly unusual. That is, it has no happy end, although Hollywood has a rule that Hollywood movies about alien invasions must have a happy end. But this one ends with a threat actually, and the same for Arrival II spin-off movie.

    The Arrival is much better than Arrival. True story.

    Ridicule me as you wish, but that movie was part of inspiration for going into telecommunications and radio engineering. Sheen's character making VLBI from sattelite dishes - bsically, Allen Telescope Arrary - was frakin' awesome and cool. Though in city it would have awful lot of jamming. Myself wearing similar stache&beard is total coincidence :D

    Virtually anything by David Twohy like the Arrival is creative and imaginative. (the Riddick movies for example). And intriguing plot, that the Aliens wanted to use Global Warming, and just "speed up" the destruction happening already. ( Ignore the Aliens III draft script by Twohy. That had way too much and documented studio interference, to blame him for. ) The Arrival was free on UA-cam sometime last year, so reminded me how good it is. While Terri Polo was fine, it was really Charlie Sheen's sometimes brilliant jerk ingenuity that sells the film's premise.

    I remember this came out, and I liked it. Not seen it since though. I was a huge fan of Sheen, and watched every movie with him I could find :-)

    The aliens have to wear thick, hot, skin suits to live on Earth. They prefer not to do that I guess.
    Fun fact, the Sat dish which was the setting for the end of the film was a miniature. The enormously talented Gary Young was one of the many artists who worked on that model.

    I really love this movie. One of those surprises you get once in a while. It's much better than it has any right to be. Extremely fun and entertaining. Peak Charlie Sheen.
    I wasn't going to click on this video because I thought you were talking about the other one that I have no desire to see. I'm glad I looked at the title and thumbnail more closely.

    I love cheap movies people mistake cheap with bad and to be fair they can be right. But a cheap movie where you can see that it tries to do as much as it can with what it has is great there are too many big budget movies that do nothing with everything. Keep bringing these hidden gems to light
