    I actually thought the clumsy romance between the two stars supported the story line. Cage developed his deep feelings for Rita over who knows how many repeated days and emotional events. Rita only knew him from the moment they met that first day. Yes, since she had gone through it before, she understood Cage's struggles. You could tell on certain days that she realized Cage had developed feelings for her but she purposely tried to discourage further development.

    • @spector7932
      @spector7932 Рік тому +36

      I agree exactly, I could also see Rita understanding how he’s developed those feelings and almost using that connection to push Cage the final step he needs to finish the fight even if she doesn’t herself really have those feelings. Wouldn’t be the first time a lady has used “love” to get a guy to do something dangerous lol.

    • @James_Bee
      @James_Bee Рік тому +28

      Well, she also went through it herself.
      I always got the feeling that the guy she hints at that she had feelings for that died during the war was while she had the ability and that guy may not have felt the same way because it was always the same day for him.

      Precisely, such a pity he did not understood that, but he only saw it one time and we many times.
      But yes Cage has been MANY years in this time loop, and he has seen about everything you could think of, he could even fight that guy without looking (eyes closed), and yes if you have been with a beautiful yes strong woman so long you get feelings for her, he tried to save her so many times already, til the moment he could not change her death anymore, she always dies were the helicopter is, and he hates it, becouse he loves her, and if he succeeds destroying the Omega, she would still be death (he thinks), no the romance he had for her was very good done, and does absolutely not feel tacked on.

      @@AmigaWolf Also he loves her but although the Rita character doesn't love him, it's only been a day, she understands because of the past person she loves. So the romance balances out in that way. One sided romance does work particularly when the other person knows this person is sacrificing themselves over and over again just to try to save them.

    One of the big differences in Cage from all of Cruise's main action characters is that cage is a coward. Tom Cruise usually comes as the guy who already knows how to fight. But not Cage. He runs from the battle and is extremely afraid. He didn't just get into contact with the Alpha's blood, Cage pretty much became the Alpha. He continues to try to run from this responsibility of "saving the world" through a big part of the movie; but his new grown love for Tota makes him stay. Basically, he becomes a man for her; to save her. It's beautiful.
    As for Rita, she starts as this cold-hearted woman, with an attitude of "I'm too good for any of you," but we start to understand where this coldness comes from. She's heartbroken. She had this amazing power of restarting the day, and she couldn't save her partner. Thousands of times, she sees him dying and can't do anything about it. She isn't a "badass" from "woman empowering", she's good at the fight because she's been in it for the equivalent of years. Through the movie, as Cage becomes strong, she becomes soft and allows herself to feel again.
    She becomes more feminine, and he becomes more masculine.
    It was truly an amazing movie!

      Perfectly summed ! I guess Liman is a genius in finding this kind of roles for Cruise 'cause I always had a similar feeling from Barry Seals, though he wasn't exactly a coward but very much a cautious guy in the beginning. I can't wait for their new movie !!!

    • @delraydad7516
      @delraydad7516 Рік тому +1

      No offense, but he wasn't a coward.
      He was a man untrained, ill prepared and unused to battle being railroaded into a certain death by a power mad general.
      As for Rita she didnt start with an "I'm too good for all of you" attitude. She started with an "I've seen so much death, I can't stand to lose another friend," attitude.
      And I think your statement of "she becomes more feminine and he more masculine," is an oversimplification of the situation, and reeks of having an agenda against woke-ism (and before you say it - I am NOT woke, just addressing your comments). Why can't they just be two human beings who thru shared adversity and a mutual understanding and respect become closer and grow as people.
      Just my two-pence worth.

    • @rosamundraven
      @rosamundraven Рік тому +2

      @delraydad7516 Absolutely no offense, don't worry. Cage is a coward. He's not just unprepared for battle, he actively runs from it. And he still parades around with his major authority get away from the battle. Rita has seen much death, but being hurt doesn't mean that someone gets immune to get arrogant, even if this arrogance comes from hurt and even fear from getting hurt again.
      As for your last comment, there is no oversimplification in my statement about they further becoming that which they were meant to be. No, there is no such thing as "just humans." There is man and woman. I wasn't even thinking about modern culture/politics, just reality. This idea of "just being human" is a make-up phrase to make each sex run away from their own responsibilities. I was made a woman for a reason. I have a purpose as a woman. And a man has a purpose as a man. He was built this away. Our sinful nature makes us run away from this because it comes with heavy responsibilities. And Rita and Cage were doing just that.
      I'm sorry, but if you claim to not be "woke," whatever that means on this ever changing culture, but fails to see the utmost importance of a woman embracing her femininity and a man embracing his masculinity, and just try to downgrade that to jus "two humans connecting", you are more caught up in this "woke" culture then you think.
      I hate this egalitarian worldview. I felt for it once, and it just gives us a reason to deny our virtuous and out vices.
      Thanks for commenting! This is fun! 🙂

      The Misattribution of Arousal. Scientists believe that the effect of danger increasing attraction is closely tied to increased levels of adrenaline and dopamine in the brain. So, for example, when you go to a theme park and ride a rollercoaster with your date, chances are higher for your date to "fall in love" with you (mislabeling fear as romantic arousal, because of the dopamine rush) instead of, let's say, you both going to have dinner at a chill restaurant. I have an alternate opinion on the romance relationship in the show, I don't think it's tacked on, I think it's just a perspective of Cage getting essentially ultimate access to knowing the future, and even then not getting easy access to a relationship with Rita. From the very last scene, with cage and Rita, it's left as a nebulous finish, because it's officially where he can actually has a legitimate shot at a relationship with Rita, without the knowledge of the future. The juxtaposition is the entire deep relationship built with her the whole movie and the ending wiped clear of that and no guarantees. The whole movie was about the mission for Rita, and no attachments till the mission was over, and since the mission was over the ending was a wink and a nod with Cage knowing what he knows, but ultimately the ending is in limbo. Which felt satisfying to me.

    Had Rita not opened up to Cage over time, to being slightly more receptive of his emotional advances, the only real virtue she would have left by the end would be her unyielding sense of duty. • @VengerDFW

    Edge of Tomorrow is great, and here's the thing about "the romance" - it isn't one in the traditional sense of two people falling in love. It is one person falling in love with another after spending a lifetime of lifetimes with them. Cage has developed a real, total love for Rita, with shared risk, sacrifice, and dedication in literal life or death situations. But Rita has not, and can not, because for her, every day is their first date. But cleverly, the movie lets us know that Rita *does* know, at times, that Cage has developed feelings for her - most notably, in the helicopter scene, where she tells him her middle name. Some looks, some glances, she understands he's been with her countless times and she has that feminine intuition and can sense when a man has more than just a passing concern with her.
    FYI, the scene where she kisses him. the kiss was not in the script, she ad-libbed it. Love, love, love this movie...

    I highly recommend the novel it's based on, by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. There are some things they used from the book but didn't explain in the movie, especially with regard to the time loop. Cage (who was Japanese in the book) would always jump back to 30 hours before he killed the special mimic that pulled him into the loop.
    His arc and origins are completely different in the novel; he's a trained soldier, not a media hype man. The ending is tragic compared to the western version, though I love both. I'll be doing a book vs movie video on it soon.

    Consider: the 'romance' you mention that seems sort of tossed in is actually rather nuanced. She, having been through living the day over and over, understands what he has been through. She can see the signs of his growing affection for her, from the fact he has intimate knowlege of her from previous interaction and especially from his distress at reaching a point where he cannot save her She recognizes this. So, the kiss at the end is at once a carpe diem moment - she IS going to die after all - but cemented in her knowlege of how he feels and her own - if not romantic love - true affection and respect - and perhaps regret for what might have been. It is a rather subtle development that they did not need to include, and it works wonderfully. One of the many elements that makes this - in my opinion - one of the great sci-fi action adventure movies of all time.

    IMO the best "alien invasion" movie EVER MADE !!! LOVE IT SOOO MUCH !!! LOVED IT IN CINEMA AS WELL, WILL REMEMBER FOREVER !!!
    Cruise and Paxton are totally killing it together, they are THE BEST !!! Their reactions and emotions are so natural, Cruise's when the copter first opens under him with his "Oh my GOD !!!" and Paxton's face when Cruise says Paxton's monologue, that he obviously had prepared, like WTF ! :D
    There actually are some moments where Rita acts needlessly bossy but well well...her failure is simply just lack of patience to work out the result, that Cage eventually succeeded to do.
    Its one of the most under underrated alien movies of all time, along with its director Doug Liman - he's AWESOME !!! Barry Seal says ALL ! This movie actually had talks of a sequel from the beginning, unfortunately it underperformed, so I guess the studio is not hurrying it into production.
    Once when I was drunk and watched it, I had the best F idea of a sequel and it matched right after the ending, like a puzzle...unfortunately I didn't write it down, so next morning it was forgotten :D:D

    It's a fair review of "Edge of Tomorrow". Rita was in a similar situation as Cage. There is a mention she had limited combat training. Like Cage, she got to be a super soldier by learning, dying, learning some more, repeated ad nauseum. The romance angle is interesting in Cage has a long memory of her, yet her memory of him is at best a few hours. Maybe the movie didn't execute it as well as they could have, but it's an interesting concept. Two things interesting about the Groundhog Day effect are, there are many movies that use it in all many different genres. "Groundhog Day" is a romance comedy, "Edge of Tomorrow" is science fiction. The other aspect is, just about all of us do it. We start a job or another life changing experience. We learn as we go and fall into a routine. Repeat, repeat, repeat, every wakeup is a reset.

    Funny thing is that Blunt being a bit Mary Sue kind of fits here, because of her time loops; but they do it without degrading or demeaning the male roles. The wokesters keep thinking that our calling a movie "woke" is because we just don't like strong females, but is really that we don't like destroying other (male) characters to make the female appear strong. This movie is a great example (and I keep seeing it almost every movie made before 2016) of having strong female characters AND strong male characters.

    • @MrReubenTishkoff
      @MrReubenTishkoff Рік тому +2

      Thing is, she is a Mary Sue, but she plays the proper role of the Mary Sue. In narratives, a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu for men) is a character who is already powerful/skilled at the beginning, that has already undergone a journey and whose purpose is to be a sort of mentor or guide to the main character, who is currently undergoing the journey.
      Which is the case here: she's not the real main character, she had her journey, learned her lessons and now mentors the newcomer.

    Its been a while since I watched this but I thought the romance was supposed to be clunky because Cruise had spent repeated lives getting to know Blunt but she's only known him for X hours/days. Additionally, it is disturbing to her because she isn't sure how the previous versions of herself have opened up to him.
    I agree with the time travel explanation being weak, I think they could have simply stated how they experienced the reset and what happened just prior to it. Not everything has to be explained and we shouldn't expect characters to understand every aspect (especially when aliens are involved) even if it is something they are experiencing. Let the audience wonder about the mechanics just as the characters are. The key is that unexplained doesn't turn into "anything goes", stick to your time travel rules. Sometimes unresolved mystery adds to an experience, it's why people watch magic tricks. Another example, I've always been fascinated by the DB Cooper skyjacking from the early 1970s. I would love to know who he was and what happened after he jumped, but there's part of me that doesn't want it to be solved because the mystery and intrigue are gone forever.

I think the omega was starting to catch on to him by act 3

To some anime and japanese media fans, this is considered one of the best adaptations of japanese media into western hollywood media...and trust me, so far, only around 3 or 4 movies are considered between good and decent adaptations of anime or manga or light novel.

He was talking about how "you can't do sex in movies these days", and the film has an entire scene devoted to deal with that "issue" just to be able to move forward. This is almost word for word what is being said on the track.
    You get the feeling that the few good, old school talents working in Hollywood these days are wearing shackles, and they actually want to portray the natural order of the world, but are unable to. The male-female duo working as equals in Edge of Tomorrow is what makes it work for me, and I think this is a director we need to pay more attention to. Here's hoping that Villeneuve's Dune 2 lives up to its poster (a man and a woman standing side by side as equals) and does what this film did so well.
