I wish people would make more videos like this. Not about taking the perfect photo, but taking the best photo with normal gear. No reflectors, no spot lights etc.
@@marcg3923 Am talking from a biased point of view.. some people are still beginners and learning with minimal tools .. so they dont have either the money or the experience to buy expensive stuff .. and honestly its not about me making sense .. its about how many youtubers deal with the idea that all photographers or videographers have neat equipment to use .. without even saying that "if u dont have that u can do that" kinda of thing .
I don't know why I never thought about that nerd point you brought out. It's about the duration of the flash, it's not the power, that determines the brightness. It makes so much sense but I never heard anyone ever bring that out. I'm watching this in late 2018 and this video is still useful. Thanks!
Toby , I just wanted to say as a long time watcher your how to videos have gotten really good they are some of the best on the web . Thank you very much.
hi photorectv....can u make a video on the different ways to angle the flash and show the results of it and also explain why you should angle it this way or use it this way depending on scenarios like indoors, what to do outdoors how to angle the flash to make it work the best outdoors??? thanks look to hear back...if not hope u could give me the answers just here is fine...
I probably watched over 25 videos after I bought my flash and not a single one of those videos were helpful, then I found your video and it explained everything SO well, thank you!!
Thanks so much for the great lesson! I finally get it! I have a Canon 90 D and a Yongnuo speed light. Watching the way you used manual controls and the TTL flash mode made perfect sense. Thanks so much!👍👍
This is an excellent video! I appreciate that you made a more affordable recommendation on external flash options. This is by far, one of the best videos online about flash basics.
I love this guy, it didn't even feel like i watched 6 minutes of a video! Always informative and the go to guy when it comes to cameras. Appreciate you dude, keep up the great work!
Great video as usual Toby. I was wondering if you could include using the flash when it isn't possible to bounce, for example, if you're indoors and the walls and/or ceilings aren't white.
After seeing this video and realising how simple using an external flash is, I bought the YongNuo YN600EX to go with my 70D and haven't looked back. Look forward to the future ones. Thanks Toby!
This video was so helpful. I used this flash for the first time on a photoshoot and I had to photoshop the flash spots. Thankfully, the photos still came out good.
thank you! this is by far the best I have seen for a layman with a 600ex rt. very simple and covers all the main basics without getting into the various modes. I shall learn those at a later stage. keep it up!
Hi Toby, Great, concise video. Showing how to angle the flash will really help me with my event shooting. I'll give it a try! Also, I was wondering what the secondary viewing device on the camera is? I don't see a link for that. Thanks!

Nice video. Great description on what the goal is with the flash, taking the small spot of light and making it larger. Loads of light videos out there, most just go over the gear. Cheers.
Hi, I really enjoyed your simple and clear demonstration on the flashlight and hope to get more of your brilliant tutorials as I'm only starting out in photography.
Your quality of your videos keep getting better and better, I recently purchased the Yongnuo Yn-600 to use with the Canon 70d. Would love to see you use the 70d in the follow up videos.
Very excited about this series, as I just bought a Yongnuo 600RT on your recommendation. I've always flashes angled slightly up, with the little white thing pulled out, and the transparent thing not pulled out. How does this work for you?
Great video. It really helped me understand making adjustments in TTL much better as opposed to going to manual. And wow what a difference bouncing the light makes. I just subscribed.
Thnx for the amazing video! I have a question what if i put a little softbox on the flash. Can i point the flash on my subject? Or still its better to point on a wall behind. Thank you!
I find it easier just to alter the flash compensation on my camera menu screen. Does the same as changing it on the flashgun, but I like keeping my camera and flash settings on one screen. Nice little video though and I felt the model wanted to get back to watching the tv programme that she was watching before you got her roped in to your video lol. Only kiddin.
Thx man always informative.... Can you just make a comparison between 50mm stm vs 17-50 f 2.8 sigma and which is better or even something near that.. Thanks again ..
If people spent £80 less on their camera and bought a Yongnuo TTL they would stand a lot better chance of getting decent photos. For some reason I found the subject of speedlights and studio strobes the hardest to get my head round, I'd end up bouncing off orange walls and all sorts. And I never ever got close enough in with a reflector. A brilliant video, concise, informative and hopefully will prevent someone going through all the angst I did.
Always helpfull. If you could give me a hint. I have a friend going to USA this week. I dont have enough money to buy 600, I'm thinking of getting 430 exIII. I prefer this instead of yongnuo because of the size (I have a Sl1). Is this a smart choice? Tks
i've watched several videos about flashes on youtube but this 1 soo far is the best with a simple explanation. Mate come up with studio equipment video plz.. Cherz
I'm late with the comment, but i have one q that was bothering me a lot: why don't you make a correct ambient exposure and than use your ettl flash? It looks like you're adjusting your camera settings like you're taking a picture in normal lighting conditions, even if it is underexposed, and then introduce your flash. Thanks for the answer. Keep going with the good work!!
Good video - thanks. One thing you didn't mention was whether the flash brightness is adjusted by the camera in any way if the flash angle is changed? Or is it just a matter of increasing the flash exposure compensation if eg. the ceiling is quite high?
I have 700D canon and only a kit lens - I want to explore more on photography and maximize the use of my camera. If I plan on buying speedlight what can you recommend for me to start with? Does speedlight vary on camera unit or is it universal to all Canon cameras?
Good video but in a Studio Environment all lights are already on anyways so there is little need for Speed lights , you can use them as back fill or bounce fill. 2 x 300 strobes with Soft Boxes is recommended for Starters for a basic setup around $250-300 for cheap starter units. I prefer lighting the scenes vs flash or strobes as it is more predictable from shot to shot. Also the light Meter but too expensive for starters, it's only 1940's tech lol.
I don't know if you will see this comment. But I just ordered a speedlite 430EX III-RT Flash, and I was wondering if I could use it for continuous lighting for making videos, or is this strictly used for photography?
Beyond Photography suggests you can point the flash directly (when outdoors) but reducing the FEC can reduce the shining plastic look. Why not do this indoors?
because outdoors there is a lot of ambient light that would balance the direct light from the flash. whereas indoors, you have a very limited source of light
@kouser yang Are you planning to move to multiple (off-camera) flashes in the near future? Than the Yongnuo RT's and there RT-X remote are great. Great value. But the flash is clearly bigger than the Canon 430 EX. So for on my camera I don't like to use the YN 600. I think its to big. The 430 EX is great , great power in a smaller package.
We will be covering that soon. Thanks! Good point about sizes of the flashes. We mostly use on our 5dm3 and don't think much about balance on smaller cameras.
+PhotoRec Toby I have the 5d mk II en the 6D mk II. I have 3 YN 600 RT and none of them fit really solidly in the hotshoe on either camera. They wiggle a bit... That and the big size doesn't make it feel comfortable for me. But hey, whats to complain if you look at what you get and what you pay. Really GREAT bang for the buck! Love your shows!
+Olivier VR The Canon 600RTs definitely feel a lot more solid on the hot shoe of any flash but yes: you get amazing value for the price with the YN even if the build quality is so-so.
+Olivier VR Thanks for the response! I'm a run n' gun shooter so I don't think I'll be using off-camera flash anytime soon. But who knows? I may experiment with a new shooting style. I haven't had any overheating issues with my Yongnuo 560 III (manual) so it would be great to get some feedback from folks who have used the Yongnuo 600 RT and the new Canon 430 EX III.
I wish people would make more videos like this. Not about taking the perfect photo, but taking the best photo with normal gear. No reflectors, no spot lights etc.
