  • In his TEDx Talk, Joe Ryle explores the outdated nature of the current nine-to-five, five-day workweek and argues for the need for a more modern approach to work. He discusses how despite a dramatic increase in productivity and technological advancements across the world, working hours have not reduced.
He advocates for a widespread adoption of the four day week which has been shown time and time again to improve people’s lives, and even have positive impacts on business, too. Joe is calling for a cultural shift, for us to embrace this change as it may be an inevitable part of our future anyway, due to artificial intelligence and new technology.
Joe Ryle is Director of the 4 Day Week Campaign, Media and Comms Lead at the think tank Autonomy, and a former adviser to Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell MP and former Labour Party Press Officer. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I really hope something will change. Life shouldn't be all about work. We humans weren't put on earth to work with little to no free-time. We need to change...

Wonderful speech and 100% on target!
For the last 22 years I have been in a 4 day a week job - time is MORE than money!
There is no downside - just do it (and I do not work at Nike 🤫).

I’m in the US. I only make about 33k/yr. But I work 4 days. Monday-Thursday. I do insurance repairs for Asurion, cell phone insurance. I will never go back to a 5 day work week. Like he said, no amount of money would get me to work 5 days.

You understand the rotation against some of this stuff out there this is what like it it Snowden Mr Ford me schooling is getting ready to start fighting or we've been fighting it but we've had no battle through it cuz nobody's wanted to come forward with it it's gotten so bad that it takes the dreams away from a person and it's establishing you against the understanding of your dreams or against what you're working on it and finding position movements to push a further back in years or push a father over in someone else's

Thank god someone is saying something that makes sense let's not be like submissive japanese people whose lives have been ruined by corporate greed and we all know now that corporate greed leads to suicide people all over the world need to protest on 31st December to have working hours strictly enforced by government throughout the world just because some guy wants Shareholder profits you cannot ruin lives of people

Too bad your words won't touch the hearts of CEOs here in America. Their greed blinds them to any sense of realism for the common worker.

Work can change for elitist with university degrees. The rest of us peons that do sales or service work have to be working when the customers need us. Truck drivers, merchant marine, plumbers, electricians, people in specialized wholesale sales have to be there when their customers need them. This is nothing but elitists trying to make it look like it is good for everyone when it only works for a few industries. This is just another classist divide. Blue vs white collar, on-site vs at-home work, 5 day vs 4 day, just another way to divide us low income people from you upper class "professionals" elitists.
