  • November 27 1993 - The final of the Hero Cup, India vs West Indies at the Eden Gardens, Calcutta. Anil Kumble 6/12 6 for 12. Sachin Tendulkar last over vs South Africa. Listen to the crowd and the firecrackers. #herocupfinal #kumble6for12 #1993
    The Hero Cup, staged to commemorate the diamond jubilee of the Cricket Association of Bengal, produced a repeat of the 1983 World Cup final. Once again, India unexpectedly defeated the favourites, West Indies, who had headed the table after the preliminary rounds with three wins in four matches. India's route to the final was less smooth: they lost heavily in their previous game with West Indies and could only tie with Zimbabwe. But a two-run win over much-fancied South Africa in their semi-final prepared the way for a home success. The fifth team to take part was Sri Lanka.

    Anil Kumble....!!
    1 Lakh people roaring at Eden Garden "Kumble, Kumble" with lighted papers like candles...... What a match & what a spell by this greatest match winner of India, Mr.Anil Kumble..!!
    Manoj Prabhakar bowled a beauty, an angled swinger to Phil Simmons which was unplayable.
    Sachin Tendulkar dismissed the dangerous & well set Brian Lara with that sharp seam delivery which made the stump fly up in the air....
    Kapil Dev's delivery to Keith Arthurton was a genuine LBW ball.
    Vinod Ganapati Kambli's 68 was the reason India posted above 200.... No one remembers how important Vinod Kambli's knock of 68 was.....
    Anil Kumble and Vinod Kambli won this match for India.

    While Kumble picked up 6 wickets, Kapil Sir's Spell was majestic. He bowled 10 over straight , 3 maidens, gave 18 runs and picked up two wickets.. His caught and bowled in follow through taking Richardson's wicket was a testimony of his super fitness even the twilight of Kapil Sir' career. Hero cup was a kind of mini world cup, where 6 nations out of the 9 cricket playing nations participated..Pak, Aus and Eng didn't participate in this...Pak refused at the last moment. Pakistan pulled out on 3 November, four days before the commencement of the first game...

    Kapil was a great cricketer. how long he had been in the team, all the time had played a pivotal role. He perfectly contributed with both the bat and ball. I never came across an all rounder like Kapil. Kapil's captancy also had been tremendous. He led team India towards success even though having lackness of proper resources. He had at the time no smart ballers, no skilled batsmen, still he shown his art of captaincy. No matter what he had, nurtured those, utilized them efficiently and learned them to perform.

    Kumble was unplayable especially if the team was facing him for the first time in pressure situations. Prabhakar bowled a gem too to Simmons and Sachin was a genius in making in those days-with bat and ball. Miss those days, was jumping with joy when Sachin bowled Lara. First time any ODI tournament was shown live on Star Sports, was amazed cricket could be seen with so many cameras and brilliant camerawork. Far far better than seeing it on Doordarshan.

    My man of the match was great Kapil Dev. Amer got out score was 161 for 5 Kapil score 24 off 28 balls. He and Sachin partnership of 47 runs took the score to 200 plus. At that time of cricket 200 plus was a fighting score. at the time of bowling Kapil's figure 10-3-18-2. Just look the caught and bowl dismissing Ritchie Richardson...

Here, in the final, coming into the tournament wiht criticism over his age and fitness, he plays a swashbuckling little innings of 24 off 28 and then produces 10-3-18-2 as though he was putting his career on the stake and his name on the line. This was a 1st day and night tournament final of Hero cup in 1993 at Eden Gardens. I was lucky to enjoy evrey ball of the match being at club house seat. What a devastating bowing of great Anil Kumble, Vinod Kambli's important contribution of 68 runs . Kapil devs allround performance of brilliantl catch dismissing Richi Richardson after being genuine LBW out denied by umpire at previous ball as well most brilliant bowling of talented Tendulkar dismissing dangerous Brian Lara uprooting off stamp with a sharp seam. The environment was that night with the moon a couple of days away from it fullness in the sky and over 1 lacs spectators devilish cacophony went sky high when Anil Kumble taken last wicket of Cartley Ambrose and India Won Hero Cup Final 1993 beating Mighty Caribbeans.

  • @bibinjacquard9274
    @bibinjacquard9274 5 років тому +12

    Anil Kumble should've been utilized his ability to flip the deliveries a bit more so that India would've won the world cup of 1996 quiet easily. In those days leg spinners were, very rarely talented. Aussies' Warne , India's Kumble Pakistan's Mushtaq Ahmed etc, were the notable ones. Height is a negativity factor for wrist spinners, but this man from Bangalore had tamed his length by bowling quickers. He could be an all-rounder like Kapil if he had developed some skills in batting. But he scarcely showed it. The century against England at Oval in 2006 was an exception.
