Lara is so elegant With his bat swings, cover drive ,cuts and pulls.
The only indian batsman who could score runs in this worldcup was azharuddin. He scored 4 half centuries in this tournament and his 93 against australia almost took the game away from aussies. Allan borders direct throw hit the stumps to get azhar run out otherwise it would have turned out to be the best knock of the 1992 worldcup.
Even a young Sachin scored good amount of runs in this wc...

@riyazahmed208 right.India went to Australia in November 1991 and stayed there till world cup 1992(March). Back in 1989-1991, Sanjay manjrekar was scoring good amount of runs and everybody had huge amount of expectations from him to do well in australia. But instead, Sachin emerged as a hero in that tour cum world cup.

That era was different in many aspects from present day cricket. Neither bat or ball was dominant. Secondly many teams were reluctant to bring new players in big tournaments and relied on the names of many ageing cricketers. Game was slow to develop but climax was equally exciting. Bowlers had some respect.

They only depends upon few players like Richie Richardson, Curttly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Ian Bishop and Brain Lara. 1.Why despite BCCI dominating matters off the field why Team India can't dominate on it?
2. Why despite the systematic murder of seaming tracks - Team India's bette noire - is the team still struggling for consistency?
3. Why despite the BCCI organizing regular bilateral series with the West Indies - despite their perennial decline - is Team India still trailing in head-to-head meetings?
4. Why despite all the pitch alterations does Team India still have a negative record against all major Test teams?
5. Why despite of all the unnecessary hype, media coverage and fan following is Team India yet to dominate like the Windies team of 1970s and 1980s or the Australian team of the 1990s and 2000s?
6. Despite BCCI having most cricket boards at their mercy, tweaking things as per convenience why can't Team India win consistently on the field?
7. Why can't Team India not dominate a sport that is on continues decline?
The answers to all the questions lies in the coulds and shoulds.
When you can't dominate in a third world sport, with all things going in your favor, no wonder you have only 28 medals to show in 28 Olympics, and in 120 years of participation. No could and should here. It is a lot more clearer.

@@paremayank coz Siddhu in the preceding test series against Australia performed poorly, putting doubts on his ability to counter high quality pace bowling. Of course, Shastri and Prabhakar were worse than him.

Those days...Hitting a six off kapildev is like a dream come true...Very seldom batsmen hit six off kapil's over...becoz he doesn't give too much length to hit for a six.
1991 wc produced many matches affected by bad weather conditions. India/RSA/WINDIES badly affected by these on the one side and ENG/PAK got benifit on the other side (undoubtedly they played too very well when mattered so nothing to take away). But 1991 wc was the only wc in which bad weather conditions changed whole scenario of the wc. If all matches played fully certainly teams in the semi finals and final would have been different and so will be the champions too.
I am sure you didn't watch anything in that WC, perhaps just read some biased report somewhere. Pakistan was easily winning it's game against SA but rain intervened and handed over the game to SA, though they got a little return gift from the rain God back in their game against England. Then SA were undone in the Semi Final against England though it can't be said for certain that SA would have won if the full game was possible, 22 from 13 was a big ask in those days and when you consider they were into their tails then even more so. India was poor throughout and even Shastri's home was bombarded with rotten tomatoes and eggs after the defeat against England after a fans frustration that was build over few games, so they were never in contention for Semis at all. WI had themselves to blame for their pre SF exit and partly the destiny for the two games, Pak vs SA and Pak vs Eng, if any of that has different results then WI would have been in SF.
Lara was jus pure class very aggressive and plays shots no other batsman play the late cut the cover driver etc

sachin 1992 started learning his mistakes in his 1st world cup, then top scorer in 1996, 2003 and 2nd top in 2011 world cup (but 1st top scorer amongst indian player) and overall top scorer in world cup series
Prior to the world cup, India dominated West Indies twice in a triangular series. First was in sharjah were Pakistan emerged as a winners and second in Australia were the host were ended up as champions. Hence India after 2 close early losses and 2 wins thereafter look favourites to win the clash against the Carribeans who were than on decline....Unfortunately Indian batting crumbled after position of strength and Lara dismantle their attack in quick time ...India lost the game they expected to win and than knocked out of the tournament

Don't know about the selection toss up between kumble and V Raju but Prabhakar was a gun bowlers back in the day whereas Srinath was still new to the scene
@@mrdaman99 I didn't know that. As of what I recall there were only three players in the Indian side that deserved a place in international sport; Sachin, Srinath and great Anil Kumble. All the others were laxy and throwing their carreer and team.

1996 cricket world cup is the most unique world cup ever played among the 19 cricket world cups till date ( including 7 T20 world cups). Below are few facts :
1. Only world cup to be won by a co-host nation. Sri Lanka won final in Lahore and not on home soil
2. Only final in which both captains were left handed batsman
3. Only final match to be held in pakistan
4. Pakistan is the only country which hosted a world cup final without hosting a semi final match !!!!
5. Only final to have a century in a success full chase. Arvinda di silva scored 107.
6. Only time world cup trophy was handed over by head of a state. Benazir bhutto the then PM of Pakistan handed over the trophy to arjuna ranatunga.

It was heartbreaking to see India lose this match...India had upper hand against West Indies in the recently concluded B&H tri-series and were favourites to win this after thumping wins against pak ,zim but probably were overconfident and too casual in their approach...this match was one which really started signalling the end of India's chances in this wc..😭

I recall this day so very well. This day i had one of the papers of my final examination for Grade/Class VII. Sadly, i flunked that grade and had to repeat the year :(
Will remember this particular day as i had not prepared for my exam (was not good in academics overall) and was totally blank before entering the examination hall. That day still haunts me.

Lara was already playing for some time by then and it is similar to how Tendulkar was sent to open in 1994. No one knew whether Tendulkar could do opening especially against the new ball in 1992 since he was relatively new to the team and a solid middle order player. Remember, Azhar even tried Kapil as opened against Zimbabwe in that same tournament

They therefore made sure he never captained India ever again, despite the fact Kapil contrary to managers Ajit Wadekar and BS Bedi was on good terms with the team, barring Shastri and Prabhakar.
Lara was star at that time ,Sachin was just a player and tried to make some impact in international cricket.
From 1992 to 2001 indian players have given lots of heartbreaking dissapointment to indian people, after 2000 we see positive young blood likes of yuvi, viru, zaheer,. Major culprits of that time, azarudin, jadeja, prabhakar and many more, we use to see match only for great sachin
It is not a fair comparison. The will and drive to win and ability to fight out a hard winning game, has not been imbibed in the team then. It developed by 2001 and beyond.
In 1992, Srikkanth was past his prime so his pinch hitting and quality waned by then. Azhar knew that Shastri was slow, hence he asked Jadeja to open and he actually did ok. Prabhakar did grab wickets in most games, except this WI game and against SA. Kapil's ODI bowling was also on the wane. India also had to play a much stronger opposition in 1992 (pretty much all the teams had good bowling attack and that too in good conditions to bowl). I don't think the team of 2000 would do much better against those attacks in 1992. Different eras had its own challenges. 1992 WC was probably the toughest we had to play in before 1999 WC
