A cover song I really like is Ocean's cover of creep. It doesn't sound like Radiohead at all, but they really let loose in the song and I think they did it justice by making it entirely their own and not trying to sound anything like radiohead.

Yeah the story behind the “Africa” cover is way better than the cover itself…I still can barely tell the difference between the two songs. Weezer is an odd case though I think because it’s like the entire reason for recording that covers album was for PR & clout. And I’m strangely cool with that because Rock music needs some artists who are willing to do that.

    - Machinae Supremacy's cover of Britney Spears' "Gimme More"
    - Fear Factory's cover/collab of Gary Numan's "Cars"

Cash's Hurt is one of the most emotionally impactful songs I have ever heard. It feels less like a cover and more like a song whose message can apply to so many walks of life. I bet a hyper pop cover could be done and it would still be affecting and relevant so long as the gravitas of the original lyrics (credit to Reznor) is preserved.

    • @kohhna
      @kohhna 2 роки тому +9

Yeah, its amazing. I just hate that a load of fucking boomers had no idea that it was a cover. Johnny Cash was a legend and always stuck up for younger upcoming generations of musicians, even during the 80s when the whole Satanic Panic shit was going off, him doing a NIN cover was a statement of solidarity as much as anything, it annoys me that there seems to be a fair portion of people who think of themselves as his fans but don't get the intent there.

Being sung by a dying old man that's lived a life full of regrets just transforms the entire song to be a reflection on guilt and personal demons as you face your own judgement day.
Even the censored line alters it because crown of thorns gives the impression he's mockingly comparing himself to Christ as a condemnation of the self-destructive hubris he often displayed in his youth.

Bigger amongst metal fans for sure - but in club circles it won't be. I think it's a great, tight cover though. I'd prefer to dance to the original because of the 'building up the layers gradually' and the various differences in the drums and bass .. but for a quick hit on a metal/goth dancefloor, Orgy's is great.

For a song to be iconic it has to be well known by the masses. Just bc you and your friends like the song doesn't make it iconic. It's a decent cover but not iconic by any measure. The label iconic isn't determined by your or anyone else's opinions but by the impact, being wisely known by the masses and considered the definitive version.

On the topic of "Last Caress". Metallica played that song live at a lot of gigs from 87 to 96, and even started some shows on the Load tour with it, something that I would think would help spread the song and the Misfits to more people than the studio version by itself.

Finn just completely overlooks and shit talks ska. Idk how you can think Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" is good and then tear into a perfectly good cover. Every time ska is mentioned, he always uses it as an opportunity to put it down and trivialize it. Ska was a big stepping stone for me and so many others to other kinds of music and Finn never acknowledges it. It's bullshit. He never even talks about bands like Streetlight or Arrogant Sons of Bitches that were not just some goofy ska bands. They had good lyrics and really sweet melodies. But Finn will always overlook this type of music and act like everything is better than it.

He acknowledged that as a good point but I guess it wasn't good enough for him to change his perspective.
Unless he *does* like ska at least somewhat but likes winding up ska fans even more, which probably has at least some truth to it. It gets people commenting at the very least and he does work at the mercy of that algorithm.

So yeah, while he continues to approaches it with such silliness and shallowness, Finn has no valid opinions on ska to me. He slags ska off and I shrug it off as "well you like to wind up the ska fans so you *would* say that."

The thing with the Puddle of Mudd's Nirvana cover was the fact that they've done it very well in the past. Either Wes was having a bad day or, more likely, he's somewhat having trouble accepting he's ruined his higher range, hence why he tends to go lower on Blurry nowadays. Also, good god, that Korn cover of One sounds hype as fuck.
Children of Bodom actually did a LOT of covers, believe they did like one per album, plus bonus tracks. The cover compilation Skeletons In The Closet is probably the best way to hear them all

Killswitch had the advantage of every single member of the band being extremely talented in their genre. I personally think Howard is vastly superior to Jesse but even he is pretty great. Plus Ronnie James Dio was such a talented singer that only someone as good as Howard could cover him successfully. And I think they also incorporated the metalcore riffs and the screams successfully without it just sounding like “Our Last Night- Holy Diver (metal cover)” or something

    • @princealigorna7468

      Yeah, it works surprisingly well.
Going back to that Dio tribute album though, Rob Halford's take on "Man on the Silver Mountain" sucked. I was so disappointed. I think he intentionally held back because he and Ronnie respected the hell out of each other and he didn't want to step on Ronnie by oversinging. But I think that's what everyone wanted! We wanted Halford to pay respect to Ronnie by going full Halford! Just like if it were the other way around, we'd want Ronnie to pay respects to Halford by going full Ronnie!
Most of that album is fantastic though. Anthrax, Tenacious D, Metallica, Doro, Biff Byford and Lemmy, Klaus Meine, Corey Taylor, Lzzy Hale, and Glenn Hughes especially put in fantastic takes

Faith: Great cover, one of the best LB tracks and this is coming from a guy who pretty much hates LB. I love the energy and how it walks the line between goofy and kinda hard. ONe of the better uses of turntablism in nu-metal.
Sounds of Silence: It's ok...I'll take it or leave it.
    Crazytown song: Never heard it.
Smooth Criminal: Not mindblowing, but a decent hard rock update to the original.
    Aerials: Um, no.
Zombie: The vocal performance makes the original. Once you lose that, the magic of the song is gone. Unimpressive.
Holy Diver: Pretty good...doesn't stick too close to the original but still familiar. Not sure if this was the best style for it, but it's decent.
Blank Space: No. Blank Space is very recognizable, they just turned it into a boring alt-rock song that sounds like a million other forgettable songs.
About a Girl: Total crap. Homeboy's voice is just shattering in front of us.
Last Caress: Excellent cover, I still listen to this shit like once a week probably. I love how they tightened up the timing and turned something so simple into something so rhythmic. Probably the best cover on this list.
One: They definitely "Korn-ified" "One" if that's the sound you're after, but I don't personally care for it.
Oops: Generic note by note translation of pop song into darker, heavier territory. Boring and uninspired.
Still Fly: No, no no. They didn't even begin to catch the brilliance behind the meticulous beat behind Still Fly or the somewhat erratic flow. And Devil Wears Prada more relevant than Big Tymers? I mean maybe as a group, but surely Birdman and Mannie have impacted hiphop more than DWP has the rock scene.
    TNT: Not familiar with.
Hurt: I don't hate this cover, but I think Cash's version gets waaaay more credit than it deserves. The original is such a masterpiece in its own right. No one can touch Reznor's emotional rawness. This is one of those songs thats so vulnerable and exposed I doubt anyone but the writer can really get it right.
Walk: The mistake here was trying to sound too much like the original. It just feels like a half-hearted cover - which is what it is.
Take On Me: I like the original better, but I knida like this cover too. The horns work well with it, though the RBF vocals leave a little to be desired.

16:15 I think a big part of the reason 80’s and 90’s subgrenres were more restrictive and cross pollinated less is simply due to the technology. Back then if you wanted to get into an obscure genre you needed to invest a lot more time, effort and money to acquire albums. Being into everything wasn’t really feasible for a lot of people so they picked a few genres and dove into those more exclusively. Plus with the limited communication it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the more underground subgrenres were barely even aware of each others existence.
Enter the internet age and all of a sudden the only thing separating you from checking out a new genre was trying to find a good torrent or download. Then UA-cam and digital distribution came along and really broke it open.

With that said I think Korns cover of Another Brick in the Wall(all three parts) live in 2012 is so very underrated. It is a great cover of a band that is hard to cover. JD's vocals capture the pain and angst so perfectly and the fact they keep the heart and soul of the song while making it their own just simply works when you wouldn't expect it to.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps, as covered by Spineshank, originally by the Beatles.
Why it's so great: A) Spineshank hearing the original- which is painful in every regard, and somehow identifying it as something worthy of covering... B) ...and then executing the cover phenomenally. Their conception of it was unrecognizable when compared to the original. It is strange and ingenious.

As controversial as the band is, I personally love 5FDP's cover of Gone Away. The original is a classic but the somber tone and lower key that it's sung in makes you feel it a lot more imo.
Another honorable mention is August Burns Red covering Hit Me Baby One More Time. In the realm of "bands covering pop songs and lending their sound to it", they hit it pretty high. The mixture of Matt Griener's drumming and JB Brubaker's intricate guitar playing makes it a great cover in a sea of shitty pop goes punk covers.
A really solid Limp Bizkit cover is Crystal Lake's version of Rollin'
Some dishonorable mentions of bad or uninspired covers could include Bring Me The Horizon covering Eyeless or Carnifex covering The Heretic Anthem. I find it's really hard to cover Slipknot, without being a carbon copy, and doing it justice

I Prevail and A Day To Rememebr honestly to me have the BIGGEST influences on my life. Especially A Day To Remember, when I lost my best friend in a motorcycle accident, they were a band we jammed the fuck out to on some bad days we had. Those were days where we drove around in our cars and just BLARED and sung the best we absolutely could. Kill switch with Holy Diver, when that first came out I honestly didn’t know Holy Diver was originally done by Dio, but I choose Killswitch because I like them and their tone more. I discovered I Prevail when they released the cover but ever since then I’ve been hooked, and this turned out to be one of my absolute favorite bands. ISMFOF and TDWP were the good ole days lol.
