Why we love HAYLEY WILLIAMS, COREY TAYLOR & BLINK-182

- What do Hayley Williams, Corey Taylor, Tom Delonge and Fred Durst all have in common? They are among the best frontmen and women in metal and rock - and I explain exactly why in this video:
* Why people like Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Brendon Urie (Panic At The Disco) and Hayley Williams of Paramore are the biggest stars in rock
* Why big personalities like Austin Carlile (Of Mice & Men), Fred Durst, Pete Wentz and Gwen Stefani don't have to be the best vocalists
* What holds "good singers" like Tilian Pearson (Dance Gavin Dance) and Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) back
* Where pop stars like Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande fit in
* Why I'm so inspired by Lil Peep and Charli XCX

You should do a video on the Avante-Metal/Art Rock/Jazz-Metal genre (Mr.Bungle, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Estradasphere, Dog Fashion Disco, for a few examples) and what happened to them, especially when they were simultaneously short-lived in mainstream popularity (Faith No More being the most famous) and extremely influential to modern music (particularly in genre blending)
Keep it up man! Couldn't have hit the nail more on the head. We need more Punk Rock MBA!
BTW better then usual with this one and that isn't an easy feat
Pure, raw talent/star power is most likely genetic or at a DNA level. People who are super talented typically have more mitochondria in their cells than others. They are born with a latent ability that others would have to work for. This is backed by scientific research. The Avg person has 2000-2500 mitochondria per cell, while someone like Michael Jordan has 5000+. The same could likely be said of superstars in the music biz if they were to have their genetics tested. Anyone can work to become talented. However, some are born with more to go with.
@@Lifeleftunlived I don't think this guy knows who Mike Patton and faith no more are and how they basically changed the music landscape before it was even a thing.
@@dirtygore He probably does, he was a little younger than i am now when fnm released The Real Thing (i say a little, though he was probably a kid to his early teens)the biggest reason i'm asking if he'd do something like that is because he's been broadening his subject matter (talking about pop and emo rap here more recently) and i think it'd bring in a few more people to see his videos doing one on that music scene (not too many, but enough to justify the shift to jazzier territory). Not only that, but it might bring people trying to get a larger sense of what music is as an artform to these groups that really took what Frank Zappa, Tom Waits, Oingo Boingoand Buckethead were doing from the sixties to the early eighties and expanded on it. Especially with Slipknot and Corey Taylor being mentioned quite often in his videos, I'm honestly surprised Mr. Bungle and FNM haven't been mentioned as being a couple of their biggest influencers (particularly Mr. Bungle, both in stage aesthetics and musical composition, though to a lesser degree with the latter).
Paramore has one of the most diverse fanbases I’ve ever seen, pop stans, emo kids, even people in the punk, rap, and metal community, as well as pretentious music fans, all seem to love them and that probably wouldn’t be the case if Hayley wasn’t such a ridiculously charismatic frontwoman
So does ADTR, there are guys that like only listen to deathcore and grindcore but still bop to them.
@Necrotic Reaper I love ADTR (I mean Common Courtesy is on my profile pic), but they’re a metalcore band (or at least were) and they’re not even close as accessible as Paramore and pop stans would lose their crap if they heard some of their songs
I saw Paramore in 2018 (I’m wearing the shirt from that show today, funnily enough) and it was the most diverse crowd I’ve ever seen at a concert - mohawked punk kids, indie teens, entire families, “preps”, people who had more muscle mass than most bodybuilders - and it was an incredible crowd, one of the best shows I’ve ever gone to
this is so true lmao
So true
Corey Taylor: *sneezes*
Loudwire: Write that shit down...immediately! Are you seeing this? Talent.
John Marrows he actually has one of the best voices in metal nu metal what ever u want to call it
@@chillzz5 One of the best sneezes too...
This guy has a range of 6 Octraves, can scream, has basically perfect technique and an amazing clear tone. Tbh I think there are actually not many people that come close to the amount of skill he has.
Julian Fuchs yeah corey has one of the best vocal ranges ever
@@julianfuchs4241 lol no he doesn't
When I think of great vocalist from the rock/metal genre. I honestly think Chester Bennington was one of the best all time. His screams, his range, and his versatility were unmatched.
He is a male version of Hayley Williams.
He can do every genre and still kills it (except of Deathcore, Black Metal and Death Metal)
So glad someone said it. Even down to the lyrics he’s just so impressive. And cmon that scream in given up…unmatched
Agree… great front man... Plus could sing or scream whenever he wanted.
I think in terms of Corey Taylor he gets attention from saying the dumbest crap imaginable. Whenever I read what he says I say to myself, “this is a guy who watches the news looking for talking points and then when he regurgitates it he forgets how to articulate it. Lol
they have good songs but chester's scream is not that great compare to other bands probably because of his high pitch voice, screaming with low pitch voice is still best sound.
I feel like something that should've gotten mentioned was that Patrick Stump never really meant to be a vocalist in Fall Out Boy- fun fact, he actually started off in the band playing drums. He's just generally a shy boy, doesn't like social media, kinda awkward but has the voice of an angel. We stan.
And the fact that labels told him/them that his voice wouldn't sell. wElL lOoK wHaT wE gOt!
who's been here since "STRAIGHT TO YOUR FACE, STRAIGHT TO YOUR FACE. WITH THE TRUUUUUUTH!!"??

The longer it takes for you to achieve the faster they wanna see you break
When my PRMBA shirt came in, I numped around my house hollering "STRAIGHT TO THE FACE"
me ofcourse, and I owned that straight faced album for 20 years now.
Corey is a musical enigma, the way he draws people in is crazy. He's compelling and demands attention when he's around. Best part is he's a real bloke, bit rough around the edges and wears his heart on his sleeve.
I never thought so, until I hard Vermilion....Sigh....One of the greatest love songs ever...Creepy, or not....
Corey Taylor is a beast
furreal. i’ve been to 100+ concerts and i’ve never been more mesmerized by someone on stage than i was by him.
Very late to this but he's probably the best vocalist of this generation
He's genuine.
Hayley - amazing vocals, incredible charisma, pretty af, and has a really cool image (especially in AL era).
Agree well said
Love her so much
I'm a huge Blink fan, but I would argue that Travis was pivotal in the band's "star power" in the early 2000's. It wasn't until he joined the band to record Enema that they really took off. Mark and Tom were the songwriters, but Travis made them "punk" with the mohawk, tats, and style. He was so popular that he got his own reality show on MTV (which Finn has discussed before), despite being the most soft spoken band member. Plus technically he's a straight monster and proficient at many different styles, which allowed the band to reach a wider audience than they could have with Scott Raynor behind the kit.
It seems to me that Travis put them on a whole new musical level and gave them some structure.
We know how Tom and Mark acted back then and I don't think a literal teenager would've changed that
He was the only real punk in the band
Yup. blink 182 is still one of my top bands...and almost none of my favorite songs are from their first album.
The ultimate "total package" frontman I'd say is, well was, Freddie Mercury. I don't think I have to explain why.
Agree.
I think MJK is a close-ish second, as long as you like his sense of humor.
who is that??
lmao,jk..haha agreed tho
@@Slevinlobell some african guy from the 80s I guess.
He was fabulous but not even close to Mike Patton
having paramore go on first always ended up being a bad idea for the bands coming on after, hayley williams is just the type that stays on your mind.
Pro Tip: To get more star power you can use the whammy bar...
pro tip: if you want real star power, smash guitar over band mates fucking head

"gwen stefani when she was in no doubt"

And she used her voice in No Doubt much more than in her solo shit
Hetfield is another interesting example bc he grew into the frontman character. Initially he didn’t want to sing and play guitar. There’s old stories of the band attempting to play as a 5 piece with a guy named Damion Phillips on vocals, and the band tried to get John Bush (of Armored Saint/Anthrax fame) to sing for them but were unsuccessful. When Mustaine was in the band, Hetfield would sing but Dave would interact with the crowd between songs. Hetfield just kind of reluctantly accepted the frontman role, and developed his persona and style after Kill Em All (which he and band will agree is pretty bad vocally lol); he went from being the painfully shy/awkward kid to one of the most charismatic frontmen in the metal world.
Yes, thanks to alcohol and drugs sadly.
He is good at growling, Sully Erna of Godsmack is similar.
@@Elitetiger27 The Vocals on Justice and Black album are something special. Especially the black album. In "an year and a half in the life of Metalica"you can see then recording the vocals. The man sounds like a beast.
YEAH-HEH,YEAH-OHH
@@Elitetiger27 Well, as someone who knows their music front to back, I can tell you the following. Yes, he did blow his voice on the Black album, which meant that he stopped adding so much grit. But, the last time we hear the classic Hetfield voice was actually on the Load album. On it, he STILL does the classic grit. It's just that the album also has a lot of ballads and less aggressive tunes. But listen to the chorus or bridge on Bleeding me, or on King nothing. It's the black album voice. The real change is on Reload. The Grit is gone, or at least minimized . From the first track(Fuel) you can hear that he's actually singing cleanly. And, I for one actually like it. In terms of technique, that's actually the most "correct" way of singing, as it doesn't hurt your voice. Of course, most people didn't like that. They wanted growling Hetfield.
That brings us to St. Anger. The grit was back but fairly controlled. No where near the level of AJFA. I for one do like most of St.Anger, it's the clean sung parts I don't like as they are mostly off-key(The unnamed feeling, My world and so on).
His voice never sounded the same, but I really love his voice on Death Magnetic. Healthy but still aggressive. I can't expect more from a man in his 50s. For anyone who thinks he can't sing, I always point to S&M 1. That's his best clean singing. He actually sounded like a proper clean singer. In the end, his voice is an "acquired" taste.
Early 2000’s Mark and Tom will always be considered peak entertainers in my book. Although they had about as much talent as most middle school bands 😂.
They are incredibly good songwriters - just bad musicians
Chase Allsup Lmaoo I love blink-182 but that’s fucking true asf 😂😂😂
Being an only gutairist I think Tom Delonge did quite well.. specially when you watch him live..

“If you don’t know who she is, that’s exactly my point.” That made me laugh soo much.
I barley knew who any of them were tho lol
Also, a lot of those "low talent" vocalists are still extremely stylistic in the way they do sing! And that style just feeds into their star power. I mean Rob Zombie isn't a grand vocalist, but his vocals are so unique and stylistic that it feeds into his overall theme!
same with m shadows, his voice is super unique and recognisable. i'd say uniqueness is better than talent cuz you have vocalists like eddie vedder, axl rose, dexter holland
Chester Bennington was one of the best.

Brendon Urie is definitely a full package. He's an incredible singer and has really great star power.
I have to disagree but I'm not going to judge
@@mindthedisturbance Disagree on what, the star power or the vocals?
You may be able to argue about the star power (although you'd have a hard time convincing anyone) but you can't argue about his vocals.
I'm not a fan of Brendon Urie but there's no denying he's the full package; one of the best of the best.
@@Free_Palestine_75 I don't want to argue on anything I just don't like his vocals that's all
@@Free_Palestine_75 I'm happy that he is successful though
His vocals are objectively god tier. I'm not sure how it's possible to even disagree there.
Someone I would add to the total package is Lady Gaga, and I don’t really listen to her music. My reasons are because she has a big personality, she’s an absolutely fantastic singer, and her style is just extreme and out there. So yeah, even though I’m something of a prog metal elitist, I’d put her in the Total Package category.
She is god-tier
@@ThePunkRockMBA Rain on me, Finn
Her tricks to attract public attention are cringe af (e.g. the infamous meat dress), and she has a terrible estetic taste with things like makeup, costume and choreography. That being said, cringe still does the job of keeping one in the spotlight, and of course, her musical prowess is second to none
brendon urie as well

Hey dude, I just wanted to say, as a female in the industry that's worked as a frontsperson since I was a teenager, and as an avid follower of many of the scenes you discuss, I really appreciated this video. Sometimes, when watching some of your videos on the foundations of scenes like hardcore, punk rock, pop punk, etc. it really starts to remind me just how exclusive and "Bro Culture" all my favorite genres were when they started. This isn't because of anything you're doing, of course, but sometimes it's easy to forget just how much underlying exclusivity there has always been in some of these underground communities. So, to see this video discuss and include so many artists other than just white male hardcore guys, in a positive, non-gatekeeping sort of manner was SO refreshing. When I saw the thumbnail with Hayley Williams, I was admittedly nervous that the comments of this video were just gonna be a flood of local douches talking about her selling out, ripping on people like Brendon Urie, etc. but I found this to be incredibly wholesome and reassuring (especially seeing you nerd out over Charli XCX - I getchu!) So thank you! I'd love to see more stuff like this!
🙏🏼
11:14 Hayley is indeed a sweet cute Girl next door everyone can relate too. She's really down to earth and that's why she's so likeable
She's a true southern Sweetheart. Love the fact she's from Tennessee like me
Yes, she casually walks around the concert venues without a body guard and doesn't walk around like she's super hip, unlike Fall Out Boy
She's also a home wrecker 😂

I was super shook when he put Matt on the not-so-good list :D
No. Objectively he's not that great of a vocalist. Yeah, his voice is incredibly unique and has an attractive tone/sound to it but he really doesn't have very much range and has that raspy sound to it 100% of the time.
While he may not have a great range, he does have a lot of the objective criteria that make a good singer: clarity, power, consistency, and tone.

You could've mentioned Matt Bellamy from Muse. That dude has one of the best singing voices out there in my opinion and is an incredible songwriter but I would not say he's got high star power.
agreed
Do you watch muse live?? Id say he's the best performer out there after Freddie Mercury. Def got the star power
@@fichom1240 Muse are my favourite band, but I wouldn't put modern Matt on Mercury's level of stage presence. The songs where he doesn't play guitar/piano are really awkward to watch, he feels a lot less animated than he usually does. I feel his instruments are a vital component of his stage presence, and he's just a great singer without them.
Who?
I would actually disagree. I don’t think Muse fans really care about his star power as much, but he absolutely has it when he plays live.

I love the idea of the profile videos. I would love to see profiles on Austin Carlile, Oli Sykes, Hayley Williams, Andy Beirsack, Caleb Shomo, Chris Motionless, and Dave Escamilla
I've never heard of Charlie XCX, but her accent has convinced me she needs to be on the podcast IMMEDIATLY!
Hayley Williams is a straight fxcking ICON. A Living Legend. Everything Paramore has done (yes everything) i LOVE. Even to her new Solo stuff i also LOVE. Hayley Williams (and just paramore in general) has been my favorite band ever since the very beginning & i will support them (and her solo career(s) inside and outside of music also) to the very end.
Agreed Hayley is brilliant, she is my favorite female vocalist.
Hayley’s solo project, despite the bad reviews and poor chart performances, is such an amazing piece of work that it pains me to listen to it. Not because I think it’s bad (I could never), but because of the depth, pain, and trauma that was all put together in it. She conveyed her experiences so well through cryptic writing, interesting blends of music, and different vocal styles that it blew me away. It really pained me to know that she went through such a rough time, but I think the fact that she is such an open person is why people look up to her. She went through something hard. For the fans, I think that seeing someone emerge as a flower after having been buried so deeply is an incredible thing, and so this gives them hope. It’s unbelievable really what Hayley has done for both myself and others. Really makes you think.
@@PopCrusher it is indeed a tragically beautiful album, but at the same time triumphant with its spark of hope for the future. The songs are so good its still a fun and enjoyable listen for me
@@PopCrusher wow, im, uhh, at a loss for words. I could not have said that better myself haha. I 100% agree with you.
Totally agree with you she simply icon legend
When you were talking about Panic! just being Urie, I started thinking about how weird an outlier in the pop world Adam Young from Owl City was - he came from the MySpace synthpop world and was a complete outsider to the Top 40 world, but he managed to have multiple giant hits despite pretty much no one knowing his actual name, and that kind of shows in how he made dorkiness his persona and became a go-to guy for making tie-in songs for animated movies before kinda dropping off the map. No traditional star power at all, and not an amazing singing voice, but he still got huge.
I was a wild fan back in the day. He did it right as far as I can tell. And kept to his DIY roots and still makes music as far as I know. He made some outrageous amount of money selling singles off MySpace before he was even signed.
Justus Gash he also made iOS sounds for Apple
@Luke Robinett he actually hadn't heard the Postal Service until after the Ocean Eyes album (the one with Fireflies).
Only one of his albums sound anything similar to Give Up at all and that's his first EP, Of June. Give Up is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I love Postal Service, but Adam's music is very different. Aside from them being electronic based projects who use a lot of metaphors, they aren't that similar. Owl City is much more silly and eccentric, where as Postal Service is more melancholic and mellow.
I love them both so much, and to say Owl City was a rip off of Postal Service is wrong. I'd be a fool to pretend there weren't similarities, but they're very much surface level.
People borrow bits of styles from different artists and genres in the music industry all the time anyways. It hardly constitutes stealing or anything. Besides, modeling your style off of the Postal Service isn't a good idea if your goal is to make it big in the music industry. You can go a lot farther mimicking much bigger bands.
Owl City's Synthpop was definitely Emo Ahmed look at Adam's hair lmao
I'd actually be more inclined to put Gerard Way on the line between top and bottom right... ludicrous range, and always hits his notes when performing (surprisingly well) - yet clearly a very nervous and introverted guy: bit of a reluctant frontman/star, especially lately.
He's absolutely one of the best singers in alternative music. Back during the Black Parade era he was also the alternative world's answer to Freddie Mercury. He is such a versatile singer so I can't agree that he's in the low vocal ability box.
You guys should consider going to rehab
I do love me a bit of mcr though
Unfortunately he doesn't sound very strong in live concerts, especially during his Hesitant Alien tour and, even more, nowadays
Danny Dircio you also need rehab. Why can’t anyone be sensible. This is why we can’t have nice things
I totally want to start a band named “The Zone of Pain” now, and my charisma and vocal abilities fit squarely within the quadrant on the graph it represents, but I will make it big on account of two wrongs making a right 😁.
Pain Zone
I coulb be the bass player you need, not terrible nor amazing and I sure as hell give you the mediocre back groumd vocals you are looking for
I'm surprised that Chester & Mike didn't have a mention in the video. I think Linkin Park had a similar situation like Fall Out Boy, where Chester is an incredible vocalist but Mike was like the frontman. Probably has to do with his experience as a rapper/MC.
Idk I always saw Chester as no 1 Mike at 2
This is the first time I've heard anyone describe Mike as the front man as opposed to Bennington
I think that mike was more like the composer, but that doesnt make Him the frontman. I think chester was a great frontman
Paramore was my favourite band when i was a late teenager early adult, i remember seeing their mtv live performance and immediately becoming a fan.
I've been a Paramore fan since my freshman year of high school and slowly developed a crush on Hayley Williams. I saw them live a few years back on their After Laughter tour and also support her new solo project "Petalsforarmor" 👌

I think ill have an eternal crush of Hayley Williams because of primarily misery business, but i have to admit that I just haven't liked anything musically from Paramore since their Self-titled album. Even then, im sorta lukewarm on their singles.
The more videos I watch the more I see how nuanced your takes are. It took a couple videos for me to grasp your message but dang, such an original take on everything. Despite, or in spite, of your clickbate titles, it's so refreshing, I never know exactly what I'm going to get when I start a video.
Thank you!

You should do a video on Hayley Williams and Gerard Way, they’re two of my favorite vocalist.
You should do an artist profile on Gerard Way since MCR recently are gaining traction due to their reunion and their subliminal posts on their platforms
I would like to see a video about Hayley Williams, especially after her solo stuff is so different yet awesome and is blowing up as of recently
The Phil Bozeman bit made my day. Thank you, great vid
I'd actually also grade frontmen on their ability to write solid lyrics. That's a fundamental part of how most people enjoy music and most of the time the frontman is actually the main lyricist. Like James Hetfield for example. That's why Metallica are so huge. Cause James is entertaining, he's got a unique and recognizable voice and he writes absolutely amazing lyrics.
Not really, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher doesn't write any lyrics but he is one of the most loved frontman in the whole Metal community, and why you would want someone that writes awesome lyrics but has no one energy on stage, and not everyone cares about lyrics I listen to rock and Metal for the instrumental part mostly, so I really dot care about lyrics.
Songwriting is a whole other skill. Oftentimes the singers arent the primary writer
Think about Elvis or even Ozzy they almost never wrote any of their songs/lyrics. But still great frontmen
@@nop214 Ozzy actually writes most of his own lyrics. I'm talking solely about the lyrics, not the actual music itself :D :D
@@ThePunkRockMBA I'm only speaking about lyrics here, not the actual music, just to be clear :D :D Lyrics are a strong hook. That's why RAP exists, it's all about the lyrics and the message of the song. If you are gonna sing about something, it really helps if you actually relate to the thing you're singing about and that goes up to the maximum if those are your own words. I think a frontman is far more passionate when he is singing a song with his own written lyrics, than when it's written for them by another person. That passion pushes the singer even further forward, makes the crowd realize the guy is genuine when he's singing. That's why I think Metallica are the biggest metal band. They went mainstream because many people can relate to their songs. If James wasn't able to write those lyrics they wouldn't be where they are now. Even if someone else wrote the exact same lyrics for James to sing, he wouldn't sing with as much passion as he has done and thus he wouldn't come across as truly genuine, which would in my opinion hamper Metallica. I think you have to be a great lyricist to be a truly god tier frontman.
Anthony Green is a total package in my opinion. Especially since cleaning up he's so charismatic. When Circa played the last warped tour he had the crowd take him from the stage to the ocean at the end of Get Out. Fucking legend and all around really humble guy who loves what he does.
OK! Covers agreed, excellent singer and frontman
Probably my favorite singer out there.

Tom and Mark may not be the best singers, but they are still two of my favorite voices. They've got great.......I dunno, flavor? They've got unique sounds, you can hear the voice, not just the note, I guess.
Tom Delonge is god
They were pioneers of the 2000's-whiny-bitch-voice style of singing; whether that's a good thing or a bad thing comes down to personal taste, but I certainly credit them with popularizing that style of singing.
Also, the word you were looking for is "tone" or "timbre" (probably). At least I think thats what you meant.
reachthroughreality don’t forget they were hot
Mark isn't a bad singer at all though. He's technically better than Tom, but then Tom has more uniqueness to his voice, and he uses his bad singing to his advantage. He ultimately defines the Blink-182- sound and Pop Punk in general. The band was definitely missing something when Tom left. If Mark had left and Matt came in, less people would have noticed, I'm sure.
@@gredangeo I think there's more to it than that. Tom was always more of the creative type and tended to push boundaries. I wish Mark stayed that way more (+44 is by far his best and most creative work). But Neighborhoods was a split between the two, and while I liked a majority of the songs, it shows distinctly the different styles (for reference, listen to Snake Charmer and MH 4.18.2011) . Tom wanted to add more elements to the blink sound and Mark wanted to stick with the roots (pop punk roots, not necessarily punk rock like Cheshire Cat or Dude Ranch). It definitely shows with the direction the band had gone, since Mark has driven the pop sound lately.
I realized the power of the frontman after getting into Crystal Lake and Slaughter to Prevail. If it wasn't for Ryo Kinoshita and Alex Terrible (respectively) neither band would be as big as they are now.
Ryo is ridiculously good at life shows. I’ve seen it, it’s like a divine energy balloon came from the sky

David Lee Roth is a perfect example of BIG PERSONALITY /LOW VOCAL TALENT. He had minimal vocal talent compared to some of his contemporaries but he knew how to control a stage.
Yeah people say Sammy Hagar was a better vocalist for Van Halen but they never reached the commercial peak they did with Roth.
Completely agree
Mick Jagger?
No way. Have you heard his isolated vocals? Great voice
My dad grew up telling me that Sammy Hagar was always better and DLR sucked. Then I got the internet and realized Van Halen wrote all their hits with DLR and he was their primary frontman.
I would love to see profile videos on Corey Taylor and Hayley Williams.
This was really interesting man, I think your approach to the “types” of frontman/woman really makes sense. Thanks for posting! I definitely wanna check out the podcast now. God bless :)
Hey Finn! I watch your channel a lot and thank you for educating me on some of my punk/hardcore history I truly appreciate it!
Thanks for watching!
I just about died at "Once again, Ashlee Simpson."
Def one of the best videos you've put out so far
Thank you!
Hey beautiful keep that music alive
I've said for years that in rock music, being different is better than being good, when it comes to singing. There are plenty of huge rock singers who don't have great voices, but you know who they are as soon as you hear the first note.
I very much agree with you
Love the content not just for the subject matter itself, but the thought provoking explanations and context. Whether I necessarily agree or not isnt the point....you articulate and entertain well, which is the idea behind a video or channel to begin with. Well done as always my friend
Thank you!
I think Tool, specifically Adam Jones, fall into the creative vision category. They are one of the biggest bands in the world, which is really cool considering how much they tried to avoid the media spotlight. Especially in their earlier years. Their music is good, and thought provoking(if you're not a hater) but you can't talk about them without bringing up their cool packaging and live shows. I think they are masters at blending psychedelia and heavy music in an accessible manner, and that's why they have such a large and rabidly loyal fanbase.
Dylan Francesconi The modern-day Pink Floyd. They need a movie, come to think of it.
Agree. On guitar particularly Adam is not the best in the world but his taste and creativity are mind blowing, IMHO that’s rarer and more special than shredding.
@@matthewsommerville88 dat tone tho
Dream Theater are like a million times more boring than Pink Floyd, wth
@Danny Dircio dream theater would be KING CRIMSON and TOOL would be PINK FLOYD
Finn, as always, great content!
Was really enjoying it, and then you brought in the ridiculously charismatic goth boi sinner, Lil Peep (RIP) and I smash liked so hard I thought my finger would go thru my phone. His vocals really weren’t that great, although I can vibe with anything he put out. But his charisma and likability was infectious. As an old pop-punk kid now in my mid-thirties, following peep was like watching my little brother enjoying his life to the fullest. Thanks for giving him a moment in your video. And keep up the killer content. 🤘
Part 2! Do part 2, this was sooo good!
Chester Bennington belongs to the top right category. Both star power and amazing singer with huge vocal range.
I bielive haley William's was signed to a big record label but put paramore on fueled by ramen to look more indie. Great video as always man
This is true
@Josh Sullivan what are you even saying? First comment is correct and hayley was the only one signed.
@Josh Sullivan It's always been my understanding that Hayley was signed but that she didn't want to have their first album be on a major label. She wanted the band to have a chance to grow a grassroots following first.
Chester Bennington is one of the people in the top right quadrant.
RIP
100% true
Not to speak ill of the dead, but I don't think Chester was particularly charismatic. Remarkable voice but was never particularly outspoken or in the public eye (outside of a direct result of the band's popularity).
Is your pfp darker than black? If so, you’re a cultured individual
@@EQPTV perhaps not offstage.
But onstage he was definatly charismatic.
Chester wasn't neither charismatic or good. He was good for LP, but really, not so good for whatever else.
Rip tho
Urie is 100% the total package, especially after this last album. He has phenomenal vocals, extremely good looking, and very charismatic. I know he talks about the struggle of addiction a lot and had a large issue with it after a recent album, so hopefully he works on that and gets to enjoy the success. Love panic and all iterations of the group.
wasnt he a nonce
Oli Sykes and Gerard way are in the "better personality than vocal?" I'd say Oli is super talented lol. He goes across genres all the time.
agreed i also think austin is super talented that man is incredible
@@joshie7681 both extremely talented. Neither are good vocalists on a technical level though
definitely not. oli sykes has great energy and bmth is my second favorite band but lbr, oli is not a good singer, at least not by singer standards
@@stevenbrideau3741geard way has amazing vocal rage and Technical Skill mcr venganza and others he has incredible voice one of best performances ive seen and that black metal song he dropped his vocals abilities are insane many other examples why your wrong about his technical abilities
Hot take: Rivers Cuomo is in the high-talent, low-star power bracket
pacificdrumma agreed
True
I don’t think that’s a hot take, it’s just true
@@bmcfarland96 yes, but I think a lot of people wrote off rivers Cuomo as untalented, which is definitely not true
I agree
My gf told me she though Ed sheeran was attractive and that kind of worried me
Get her eyes checked
On the plus side, imagine how good looking she must think you are
Maybe don't get her eyes checked afterall
why why
Gonna need to apply some water into that burn.
🤮🤮
Maybe you don't realize that you look like Paul Giamatti? Don't ever leave her, bro or you will die alone.
Well done buddy great analysis on what works.
Oh, and thanks for this channel, it really widens my perspective!
I'm not a fan of Paramore but I like Hayley Williams she has a amazing voice and she's beautiful
Also that American Football feature 😩👌
Yeah I don’t like their music either, but I’ll always respect Hayley Williams for pushing her band first. In 2005 the record labels told her to drop her band so they could push her as a solo act and she refused. In all the years of me not liking their music, their personalities never rubbed me the wrong way or anything, they seem like more respectful people than a lot of bands I actually do like.
I listened to her music back in the 2000s and enjoyed but I also used to like her too lol
I think Matt from Avenged Sevenfold has a good voice. I’ve never seen them live, but from their videos, he can hit really high notes. I think Anthony Kiedis is the ultimate example of great frontman, bordering on bad singer.
Matt is quite good and stable, but he puts a pretty healthy amount of autotune on his voice live. A good example of this is in the performance of "Second Heartbeat" from Live in the LBC. His voice lacks a natural "warble" and sounds a lot more like a sine wave because it's being tuned on-the-fly.
heard Matt live back in 2018. It was awesome.
I saw someone else mention putting Gerard Way in the total package section, and I would have to agree - BUT. Only because I think that his vocal abilities improved 1000% between the recording of Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade. I love MCR, and Three Cheers is probably my favourite album of theirs overall, but I don't think Gerard had quite mastered the use of his voice until he got sober. The emotion was always there, but he actually SOUNDED amazing on many parts of The Black Parade.
Mcr The venganaz
Performance was 1000% full package his voice was incredible
Sick video, you mentioned Oli Sykes in both the great singers and great performers boxes tho :P
I think Mike Patton makes it to the total package level
This video got me thinking about the fact that blink-182 is really one of the very few bands I can think of where literally every member is larger than life individually. Each of them, Mark, Tom, and Travis, have had multiple successful bands and musical endeavors in the scene, and even outside the scene (Travis producing for rappers like Suicide Boys), and each of them have had their own clothing lines, and companies that are also huge (Famous, HMNIM, Atticus, Macbeth, To the Stars). Its just really crazy to me that these three somehow managed to meet and join together in the same band, and I really cannot think of too many other bands where every member is equally a star in their own right, and no one really outshines the other, and I think that's really what has helped to maintain their relevancy over the years, much beyond the new music they've been releasing.
I think the best part about all your videos is that you don’t just focus on punk, metal, or whatever niche genres are out there. You’re well versed in many types of music and respect them for what they are. Nothing bothers me more than seeing shade thrown at truly talented singers or artists like Lauv for instance. I absolutely despise when someone bases their entire personality off the fact that “they’re a hardcore kid” and refutes the talents of anyone not in the genre they think is best. Keep up the good work.
Awesome video! Still think a "How Did They Get So Big" video for Panic at the Disco would be super insightful!
Finn "he's a beautiful man" Mckenty
I saw tilian live a few months ago and his voice is amazing live
Really like your "straight to the point" format and the honesty of your content. Great youtuber!
Thank you!
The quick heaters you throw out are great
Gerard way has a killer voice, go back dude
Exactly!
he actually had a lot of autotune on studio versions ...Just compare any live version with studio....And in those live versions he had pretty mediocre voice(not saying he couldn't sing its just that he isn't good as some of the people in the same genres).I DONT HATE MCR THEY ARE ONE OF MY favorite BANDS just for the record. But he had a really big vision and i think he is one of the best examples of fusing story telling and songwriting and also he was hot as hell.
@@governmentblankets8077 no
As a huge MCR fan, no. He doesnt has the best voice nor the best voice technique but he acts his voice. Thats his incredible strengh. Just listen to the vocal line of mama.
@@governmentblankets8077 He IS an actor. He is made for that, especially with the incredibly world building they do.
Mike Patton. Biggest and best range of all time, massive personality with star power galore. Why not him? Too weird?
s0c1al1z3dm3d1c1ne best singer ever in my opinion
He's amazing. Love Mike Patton
Most of his music absolutely sucks
Well, I think the biggest reason is he can't name EVERYBODY. The video would otherwise be too long.
@@DH-hl5tc well, what people of his music is completely a matter of opinion. Yeah, he tends to get a bit more on the experimental side of music, but some people actually enjoy Experimental Rock. How do you think Radiohead got so big?
Uh-oh... I've just watched three of your videos
And I am not stopping here
Man... I honestly think it’s cool when someone’s voice has character, even if they don’t sound technically great. It’s kinda why I don’t get into a lot of pop all that much. Talking about just star power though... if I were to steal anyone’s career, it’d probably be Jared Leto’s.
.....Agreed.......He is fantastic....and he's a cult leader now.....He never seems particularly phased by his mega.talent....He just concentrates more on putting out a really great performance........It seems like there's something really driving about having Shannon drumming for him....Keeps him very driven....It kind of reminds me how Bones has his brother around a lot doing the tech support stuff a lot would be really keeps them motivated well.......He always nails this song.......They both really do.....ua-cam.com/video/cMYwXiYxSns/v-deo.html

Love a great chart. Would be super cool to assign value (quantify) to create a regression analyses to test the true relationship between the boxes. Super nerd out but could be fun. Thanks for blending music and critical thinking. Cheers
No way to accurately operationalize that data so the regression would be pretty shaky lol
The Punk Rock MBA one can dream
@@ThePunkRockMBA star power could possibly be quantified by number of media articles (there must be some online tool that can compile this) related to their names as keywords but the primary limitation there would be inability to compare vocalists across eras (since media proliferation was different) and inability to accurately quantify vocal ability beyond pure technical attributes. Could be a fun tongue & cheek thing with one's own subjective scoring though lol
Idk bro. When tilian does that goddamn dance I go crazy
dude i love that you put that video of phil at 8:08 hahaha!
i love that his channel title is "the punk rock mba" and he highkey, unabashedly stans charlie xcx.
that's punk rock.
James Hetfield and M. Shadows definitely dont have a low vocal ability
M shadows is terrible live. I saw them at the taste of chaos tour in 2008 or 7 and the asain hair metal bamds that opened up were better
What about song Cure?
He mean't vocal range and similar. Both dudes are baritones and can't hit high notes like other Rock bands.
He meant vocal range.
@@AzaiKang and what a problem? Every rock and metal band singer must sing in 4 octaves? James use comfortable vocal range for himself. But that doesnt mean that he have low vocal abilities. Do you or guys on top do vocals? Do you now how to rate vocal abilities?
Phil Collins and Paul Simon look like used car salesman. Yet are 2 of the biggest artists of all tome. That proves talent sometimes wins lol
Also, they wrote really catchy songs. Everyone wants to overlook that aspect. It’s not about musicianship per se (though Phil Collins is technically a great singer and a great drummer). It’s all about can you write a really great, catchy song? I don’t care what you look like and what you do on stage, people will forget about you in a month if you don’t bring good songs.
Paul Simon is fucking adorable.
@@mar2d258 I guess I could see that if I was a female or gay, of which I'm neither. But by all accounts I've heard from people who know the man personally or have crossed paths with him over the years, he is an insufferable asshole. Nothing adorable about him, personality wise.
When you are rating star power, you have to look at the time period somebody came up in, and the genre. In the folk/rock environment of the 60s being traditionally handsome was probably a drawback, you didn’t look “real” enough.
Dude, I effin love this channel! Subbed
Thank you!
