So whos side project was Murderdolls? As a Wednesday 13 fan I always was given the impression they where friends and they decided to do a covers album Because thats all the 1st Murderdolls album is.... Covers of Frankenstein drag Queens from Planet 13 songs
17:20 you are very wrong. Guessing your not a huge Misfits fan either then x'D maybe you dont get the horror punk scene
Most painful recommendation, if you dont like Wednesday 13 songs with Joey playing drums check out all the same songs minus joey because they are better? x'D
what about Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies and the Damned Things
Please do more research. Joey Jordison did not play drums for Murder Dolls. He was one of the guitarists. That could possibly be 1 reason why the drumming is soo much different than him in slipknot
I really enjoy the 3 side projects that Chino Moreno has developed, “Team Sleep”, “Crosses”, & “Palms”
Did you expect Finn to mention this?;)
But yes they are really cool
Team sleep are better than deftones lets be honest!
@@lewisb85 Team Sleep is great, but I wouldn't go that far. Calm down.....
I was today years old when I found out that Team Sleep was Chino's project, it all makes sense now
I agree. Finn not so much.
Stone Sour could technically count as Corey Taylor's side project from Slipknot, even though they originally formed before he joined Slipknot. He reformed them shortly after Slipknot blew up, and they did really well.
Really showed Corey's range.
Slipknot is the real supergroup/side-project.
It's not Corey's side project, he was stone sours second vocalist, brought in by their guitarist Jim Root, (one of slipknot's guitarists) who asked him to be slipknot's second vocalist. Stone sour and Slipknot share 2 members.
StoneSour was the worst thing to have happened to Slipknot. Once they got big, Corey started turning Slipknot into radio friendly band.
Corey is the John Cena of metal
Can't forget Mad Season, Layne Staley from Alice in Chains' awesome side gig. Definitely worth a listen.
Rest Peacefully Layne.
Mike Mccready wrote some awesome riffs on that project too. Tbh everyone in that band was a really solid musician. Sucks we had to lose half of the band ☹️
@@aleksastamenkovic5526 definitely! 🤙
I literally came to the comment section to see if anyone mentioned Mad Season. 🎶🤘
That album helped me when I was freshly clean in 2010. I figured I'd end up like Layne, but found the album while working at Goodwill. Listened to it every morning at a terrible job, until I finally got my life together. RIP Layne
Blur are actually one of the most successful and influential bands of the last 30 years here in the UK and are held in much higher regard than Gorillaz. The difference is Blur were pretty much exclusively marketed to British people and so they didn’t have much influence overseas. Gorillaz may have more album sales worldwide but Blur are considered icons of the 90s Britpop movement.
Yeah kinda weird that he said Gorillaz are bigger than Blur, like I'm Australian and even I was like 'Idk about that'
He also called him Damien and not Damon lol
Americans have problems understanding that a world exists outside America that is completely separate to what is going on there. If they didn't know about it then it didn't exist.
Blur were absolutely huge in New Zealand too. Every kid at school was singing "I got my head shaved", even when they had long hair. Gorillaz were also popular but not to the same extent as Blur.
Blur was mean to nardwaur so fuck them
Audioslave's albums still hold up to this day. It's a shame that before his death, Chris and Tom were coming back together and it seemed like more music was on the table
The first one was the best imo!
I was preparing myself for Finn’s bad take on Audioslave but then he completely glossed over them.
Like A Stone is such a fucking good song.
Audioslave was amazing. It really seemed like it was impossible to pull it off but somehow they did it. Whoever hasn´t heard more than Like stone (thats a great track BTW) I would recommend you to give it a go to the complete first album. Production is top notch quality, and although Morello gets lots of time in the spotlight, Tim and Brad are one of the best ryhtm sections in rock history, period. Besides, they were really big back in the day. I was born in 1990, so I didn´t really catch RATM on their peak, but I think that maybe with Audioslave they got bigger?
Show Me How to Live is such a jam
Surprised there was no mention of A Perfect Circle. Definitely one of the best side projects.
thats the first side project i ever heard... i wanna believe maynard invented side projects lol
The first one that comes to my mind every time. 🤘🏻
Absolutely.
My favorite
Without a doubt🙌
It’s surprising to hear no mention of queens of the stoneage. From the bands origins with Kyuss to the eventual ‘Th m crooked vultures’ supergroup of Josh homme, Dave grohl, and Jon Paul jones , so much material there
Definitely worth mentioning.
Audioslave debut album was nearly flawless. It’s as good as any Soundgarden and RATM album IMO. I would say they are the standard for supergroups.
The ultimate side project is Skrillex….. it started out as an electronic side project of Sonny Moore (From First to Last) and turned into a huge chart topppng success that arguably changed music forever. (for better or for worse)
Brostep is only a side note in music history… it fell off really quickly
Lol true true
@@TheCivildecay I mean Skrillex was kinda important to a lot of us Zoomers getting into weird shit tho. I know a lot of people who are like 17-20 and are now listening to stuff like neurofunk, breakcore or glitchbreak but started their journey by listening to skrillex in 2013
@@michaeltrommler9144 thankfully I got into that stuff well before I had ever even listened to Skrillex despite loving him in FFTL 🤣
Dubstep is some of the worst music I have ever heard.
I’m surprised Finn didn’t mention Transplants, Travis Barker’s other side project. They are a really hit or miss band for me, but the music is more interesting/creative than any other blink side project in my opinion.
Also, Drugs broke up because Craig rejoined Chiodos and didn’t discuss it with the rest of the band (from what I remember.)
The Transplants is Tim Armstrong's project that included Travis. But yeah they're definitely a punk/ rap supergroup.
Pretty hard to keep track of Barker's side projects these days 😂 he's basically half involved with half of pop punk these days.
The Transplants were mean to Nardwuar during an interview. I won’t support them strictly because of that lol
I was getting ready to type the same thing but figured I should check the comments first. I agree.
Absolute favorite supergroup of mine lately is Killer Be Killed that consists of Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan), Max Cavalera (Soulfly), Troy Sanders (Mastodon) and most recently Ben Koller (Converge). The two albums the band has released are just spot on amazing and having Sanders, Puciato and Cavalera trade off vocals even on one song still works great. Check out their song "Dream Gone Bad" to see what I mean.
Gorillaz are my favorite band so it broke my heart to hear them described as "Kia Commercial Music" but at least you respect how successful they are as a whole 👍🏻
Finn has pretty bad taste
I like Deltron 3030 their rapper a lot, that's saying something because I really don't like that much rap honestly. I like me some Kool Keith/Dr Octagon and a few others like that but it's mostly that less mainstream variety.
Why would you suck all this info from him, he doesn't have enough knowledge about it nor he have checked discography and it was his personal opinion. Usually youtubers only has a certain % information that is useful, true and half way reaserched
Everything outside of punk hardcore screaming is a comercial music to him XD
dude is tonedeaf XD
That was a bad take. Gorillaz are fucking great
Another side project I thought was awesome was “Down”. Considering Phil Anselmo came out with their first album at the peak of Pantera, it would obviously be compared greatly to Pantera. With that being said I had my doubts about it being a huge Pantera fan. But I was shocked at how much I loved it. All the albums to me are good.
Phil Anselmo side projects are just as good if not better than Pantera....Well Maybe better than Reinventing the steel which sounded like Damageplan lite.
Was going to mention DOWN/Superjoint!
@@lewismcnicholas2631 Super Joints last album was awesome and when it comes to stage presence Phil still gots it.
@@ogvelociraptor205 I agree - best metal frontman ever. Looking forward to the new project he is doing with Kerry King
Down is better than Pantera. Kirk and Peppers riff writing and playing is 10/10 on Nola.
Killer be Killed with Greg from Dillinger, max calvera from sepultura, and Troy sanders from Mastodon is a great supergroup and probably one of the best. Showcases all vocalists really well
This
I think they're awful, but each to their own 🤷♂️
I actually think they are a hell of a wasted potential.
compared to nailbomb its shit, Alex newport was a beast who got the best out of max!
@@lewisb85 now that was a hell of an album
Funny that you mentioned Blur in relation to "Girls and Boys", I thought in the US Blur were only known for "Song 2". For the record, in Britain they were the second biggest guitar band of the 90s, and shaped the Britpop that dominated here in the mid 90s.
I feel like Fantômas should get some recognition as one of the greatest (and most bizarre) supergroups ever conceived, even if they are rather obscure.
Fuck yes!!!
My favorite part of murderdolls was just seeing Joey on guitar instead of drums. Truly shows the dimensions of his talent.
Long live the god 🤟🏻
It's apparent that him and Paul wrote a lot of great songs for Slipknot. I'm not really a fan of the past 2 albums.
@@abowla7187 I think Joey wrote Scissors if I'm not mistaken, great track
@@theticketthatexploded420 he claimed to have a bunch of songs saved up that he wrote specifically for slipknot. He planned on reuniting and using those songs with them. Only one person from the band came to visit him in the hospital after he lost control of his legs during his last show. They thought he was on drugs. Turns out he developed a condition. They threw him away. I can't listen to them anymore. I was obsessed with slipknot. I lost respect for them. Especially Corey and Shawn. They let me down...
@@abowla7187 Clown and Corey have been showing their true colors lately
I think mad season should definitely get a mention. probably the best side project / super group in my opinion.
also Temple of the dog
It truly was. Above is a masterpiece.
Just left the same comment! Mad Season was awesomeness 🤘🤙
oooh good call
Probably my favorite supergroup now that you mention it
Some Honorable mentions not listed here (IMO):
The Almost: Aaron Gillespie's (underoath) side project. As a drummer I enjoyed warming up by playing along to Southern Weather.
Silvertooth: Side Project? sort of? For folks that love Silberstein and Beartooth, you'll love this. Silverstein started a limited time only side project, featuring the entire band Beartooth. May their short run live on through youtube forever.
A Perfect Circle: This is what you get when Tool's touring guitar tech has a "hold my beer" moment & catches the eyes of the front man himself, Maynard James Keenan. This band was arguably the most successful of any side project to date.
The Damned Things: Ever wonder what happens if you cross Fall Out Boy, Anthrax, Every Time I Die, and Alkaline Trio? Well, now you have an answer. With two full studio albums already under its belt, it surprising that no one has heard of this group. I personally really like the sound they've produced. You could describe it as Rockabilly Metal. Not to dissimilar from the sound of He Is Legend. Their latest single "Cells" really drives home this sound.
The Damned Things are very underrated
The Almost is good.
If he's gonna do a part 2 he should include them crooked vultures. Underrated and left you wanting more
Same with Eagles of Death Metal
@@ivanagustinortiz5237 as much as I love Josh Homme, Eagles of Death Metal is not good. The vocals are kind of annoying and the music is just very mid at best. Them Crooked Vultures is arguably the best supergroup ever and Queens of the Stone Age is god tier
Audioslave was an incredible supergroup. Rip Chris Cornell
Agreed. While th criticism of Prophets hold, because Cornell didn't do the rap/rock thing and just sang with his incredible voice, Audioslave stands a little different. It's the best post OG lineup
what about mad season? i liked that one
Im a huge Rage and Soundgarden fan but i just couldnt get into audioslave... It was bland to me.
@@kimmyfreak200 I love mad season to rock in peace brother Layne Staley
I love Cornell, but Audioslave were musically mediocre. Soundgarden were experimental, Rage were good at what they did, Audioslave seemed super underwhelming to me after such groundbreaking projects. But to each their own!
When Joey died, it wasn't Slipknot that I felt like hearing or Scar the Martyr but actually Murderdolls. I was a kid just getting into Slipknot when they came out and my love for Joey and the Misfits really took over. Also, Xtrmst rules and it's a shame we never got a follow-up, maybe with better recordings.
Yes! Murderdolls are awesome and definitely deserve more recognition. What a fun band, the project really showed a different side of Joey we didn't see in Slipknot. He was such a versatile musician.
Scar the Martyr has some good tunes.
Murderdolls was amazing! Beyond the valley is my all time fav album
I loved Murderdolls almost as much as I loved Slipknot when I was a teenager. Despite my taste in music expanding and changing a bit as I got older, I still go back to Murderdolls and early Slipknot sometimes.
I agree. I found The Murderdolls because of Slipknot and Joey, but they quickly eclipsed them in my book. Wednesday 13 is one of my favorite musicians and has been for ages.
City and Colour (with Alexisonfire's Dallas Green) was probably the first 'heavily-tattooed-guy-from-a-hardcore-band-showing-his sweeter-side-with-folk-music' kinda side project. But even if it wasn't, it's still definitely the best.
City and Colour is amazing. Took me way too long to understand the name. Dallas Green. A city and a color. I felt so dumb when it finally clicked.
Me + You is another great Dallas Green side project with Pink.
@@AkenoNorris Yes! Me + You is a fantastic project
hey man, love the video, but if i can offer a quick correction:
you mentioned Joey's playing in murderdolls being more straightforward than his playing in slipknot. that would most likely be due to the style, sure, but also because Joey was playing guitar in murderdolls, not sitting behind the kit :) that honor would originally go to Ben Graves, and later, Racci Shay and Jason West for a short time towards the end of the reunion tour.
sorry not sorry, massive Joey (RIP) and slipknot fan, so i couldn't help myself, haha. thanks again for the great vid!
The first 2-3 Foo Fighters albums are so dope, still hold up to this day. And one cool supergroup I liked was The Damned Things. I initially thought throwing together members of Fall Out Boy, ETID and Anthrax sounded like a gigantic mess on paper, but I thought they were great.
Damned Things were really good!
Even the first album is good. I have so many favorite songs from that album
Shout out to The Damned Things!
Damned Things are great!
Love The Damned Things!
Mad Season, Superjoint Ritual, Down, and A Perfect Circle are 4 side projects that were (and in some cases still are) super popular and successful.
Hell yeah! Cant believe that dude didnt mention one of them. He has to learn a lot
Down made me realize how much Phil had influenced Pantera to become what it was. Damage Plan was so bad it actually made me question how good Pantera was. Down is one of the greatest super groups.
Half of this list is Phil Anselmo, who also had some extreme metal side projects. I don't know if the whole white power thing was a joke or not but nowing his twisted sense of humor it probably was. I doubt he's actually racist though seeing how he sang about it in a negative perspective in 5 minutes alone "Your God's a racist tool" it kinda sounds like he's not for it. From what I gather he was being called out by skinheads in the audience and he was kinda mocking them because he has the look but isn't really one of them. It sounds probable at least, but who knows these days, people have gone down some very strange political roads for god only knows what reason.
Probot kicked ass
Mad Season was always sad but now with Mark Lanegan gone it's absolutely heartbreaking.
There was actually a FOURTH Blink-182 side project, the Transplants (formed by Travis, along with Tim Armstrong from Rancid). They're rap rock, and they recorded their albums between 2002 and 2013, in between Travis's stints in Boxcar Racer, +44, and Blink-182.
Travis was a busy man in the 2000s.
I remember the transplants being super popular in my area, for whatever reason.
THE TRAVELLING WILBURYS
Off genre, but a unicorn; one of the most stacked supergroups talentwise to be ever formed
Dylan, Harrison, Lynne, Orbison and Petty. Just the best of the best.
And the music is great
Oh crap I forgot about them! I said Pulley was my favorite supergroup but yeah, actually Traveling Wilburys are now that you mention it. My dad would play their Volume I album on cassette often when we'd take a drive to my grandparents' house when I was a kid and I think that catchy music had an influence on the type of music I ended up liking as I got older. I didn't listen to it myself until I was older but that Vol I is one of my favorite albums. 👍
I'm curious to know your opinion on two things: Them Crooked Vultures cause I don't know how well they actually did but I enjoy the album; and the the roster of Queens of the Stone Age that brought Songs for the Deaf that to me was a suped version of QOTSA that I'd say was near peak.
TCV album is flawless and still one of the best supergroups ever done. Dave, Josh, and JP are such an amazing combined force. Still praying they make another album. :C
yup scrolled down looking for this! I remember every song on TCV album 12 years later. The Desert Sessions collective side project with Josh Homme, Les Claypool, vampire actor/musician Matt Berry and a lot of other artists is really cool and underrated also.
I love Them Crooked Vultures. That album was amazing. QOTSA are my favorite band.
So fucking good
@@SonicBroham same dude. Especially with the whole super group shit. Such a good band
I started out as a Mark Hoppus guy, resenting Tom's live vocal performances and his stage banter that was incredibly juvenile to see in like 2009, but with time I've realized he's definitely the better songwriter. Corey Taylor's solo choices also include appearing in Nostalgia Critic's The Wall.
I think Tom writes better music but Mark writes better lyrics.
And I also think that Mark is a much better vocalist from the very start.
I think saying that their stage antics were only relegated to tom is a very silly thing somebody could say. They all acted like that. I thought that was kinda the whole gag, punk rock and dick jokes.
@@samcardenas1991 Pretty much. Mark was /just/ as bad as Tom when it came to juvenile shit lol. That was Blink's things. They were a gaggle of degenerates and it's how they've always been.
@@Scrinwaipwr I agree. I've been listening to Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket a ton lately and (in my opinion) compared to Mark's songs, Tom's lyrics are so bad. To be fair though, Tom's lyrics got a lot better on the self-titled and Neighborhoods.
Hey Finn, great video. Maybe you could do a part 2 to this idea? Would love to see you talk about Oysterhead. Definitely one of the best (and most bizarre) shows I have ever seen live.
I think Hellyeah was a great supergroup. And Stone Sour deserves mention for how big it actually was.
Pretty sure Corey was in Stone Sour before Slipknot. So I wouldn't really call it a side project.
Prophets of rage was definitely mediocre but audioslave was amazing especially their first album
Can anyone really expect a bunch of middle age dudes to put out rap rock and it actually be anything other than mediocre?
The first Audioslave album is such a classic. Also has one of Morello's best solos in 'Getaway Car'
The Murderdolls were SO sick, really wish they would've done the tour off of their last album.
They did tour the album in the UK
I loved dem
I loved them when they debuted their album but all my friends totally hated it
I loved Murderdolls, first band I got my guitar teacher to teach me songs of when I was 12 years old 🤣
@@chenz69 good teacher.
Great video, really enjoyed it!
It's Damon, not Damien Albarn from Blur/Gorillaz though.
for next time: Art of Anarchey (Big names in the rock and metal scene), Dreamcar (Davey Havok + No doubt band), Outer Glow // ShYbeast (I see stars vocalists) We Are Harlot (that time when Danny Warsnop quit Asking to do country rock or something like that), you could talk about Attack Attack! and how many bands that's turned into with the revival of the band it'self as well.
just some ideas :) Thanks for the video!
Yes, D.R.U.G.S were fucking great. They do have a new album coming out, hope something will happen with them. It's Damon, not Damien, singer of Blur.
The Murderdolls was one of my favorite bands when they came out when I was a junior in high school. I still love their music because it’s nostalgic at this point. I never got to see them live but I have seen Slipknot about a dozen times and Wednesday 13 once.
I saw them once years ago and that's when I realised how teeny Joey Jordison really was :)
I've seen Wednesday 13 twice and both times I was hoping he would do some Murderdolls songs
@@AlexGreat321 I’m kind of surprised he didn’t because a number of those songs were recycled or semi recycled from his music before them either from Frankensteins drag queens from planet 13 or his early solo stuff for the first record.
I saw Wednesday 13 in a basement of a pizza parlor I think it was in Berkeley. I don’t remember it was a long time ago. I remember hIm bitching about how close the crowd was to him.
I’ve never seen slipknot, but have seen Murderdolls and Wednesday 13 twice each! I met Joey after one of their gigs. I still listen to that stuff and love it.
Angels and Airwaves came out during a tumultuous time; it got me through so much, but I also prefer their spacey sound
Nice video! Hope you do a follow-up. One of the first bands that comes to my mind is Six Feet Under. I enjoyed them as a side project, and their first 3 or 4 albums, but Barnes' vocals are totally gone now.
My favourite supergroups or spinoffs = A Perfect Circle (Maynard), Crosses (Chino), Temple of the Dog (Cornell with Pearl Jam basically)
my favorite supergroup is Killer be Killed ... i usually roll my eyes at supergroups and end up only giving a couple listens but killer be killed has been in my rotation since they started.
wasnt that one of the max cavalera projects?
Killer be killed is fantastic. Showcases all vocalists so damn well
Max, the bassist from mastodon, former vocalist for Dillinger, and I forget whose on drums.
@@toyotaecw dude from converge
Came here to say the same. Killer be Killed is what a supergroup should sound like.
Another Drummer Side Project worth mention: The Almost, Aaron Gillespie's band after he left Underoath.
The Adventure by Angels… may be one of the best songs ever. It just gives you such a feeling. Also Corey Taylor’s black eyes blue is also an incredible song. However the rest I couldn’t get into.
On the didn’t suck side, I was really shocked to see that you didn’t make mention of temple of the dog or Mad Season…. Both were phenomenal super groups I still listen to today.
Great call on Mad Season.
Nailbomb is super underrated. It’s like a mix of groove/thrash/industrial/hardcore with Max from Sepultura. Some of the most pummeling riffs of the 90s.
Such a killer album Point Blank is even the live album was really good still listen too Nailbomb alot
Yesssss. Point Blank riffs slap.
Nailbomb kicks ass.
Best Metal t-shirt
Nailbomb is awesome.
Love your videos Finn. Don’t know if you’d consider a different style of video looking into the influence a producer has on artistic projects and careers? Was thinking of Rick Rubin with Audioslave, but there’s Steve Albini (e.g. Nirvana’s In Utero) and Brendan O’Brien among many others.
Also if you have caps in your merch can it be shipped to the UK?
Thank you! I don’t think videos about producers would get views.
If Velvet Revolver is your thing I'd like to recommend Army of Anyone. It was Richard Patrick from Filter and the DeLeo bros from STP. They only out out 1 album but it really is STP with Patrick on vocals. Kind of a nice mix if those 2 bands appeal to you.
If 80s guitar virtuoso rock and 80s stadium stadium rock is your thing then check out Chickenfoot. That supergroup had Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen vocalist), Michael Anthony on bass (also ex-Van Halen), Joe Satriani on guitar, and Chad Smith on drums (Red Hot Chili Peppers). It's exactly what you'd expect :P Also Chad Smith had a wild side project called Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats. That album was a trip.
I'd also like to give an honorable mention to Time Lapse Consortium, a side project of Incubus. Basically the whole band was involved, Boyd's vocals only appeared on 2 tracks that are covers of Incubus songs. TLC was widely considered Ben Kenney's audition for the band to replace Dirk Lance.
You unlocked a long-forgotten memory with DRUGS. I was obsessed with them in High School. And the Murderdolls. Great video, Finn!
I went through a big Chiodos/DRUGS phase in like 2013. DRUGS is coming back so that’s exciting but I’m hoping the music is good. None of Craig’s solo ventures since have caught my attention
DRUGS just came back and is going on tour soon
I love that +44 Album so much.
Great Record.
Mark play some songs from them live on twitch, on bass.
That was fucking awesome.
Sad that their didn't make a second record.
An honorable mention here I think David Draiman's device was one that kind of fell flat, his vocals are so unique that he could try really hard, but whatever he does is still going to sound a LOT like disturbed no matter what
I saw Device open for the Megadeth /Black Label Society tour about ten years ago and it SUCKED. No bass made for a really thin sound, and David's lack of charisma didn't do the set any favours either.
I loved murderdolls. It was just fun "cooler" version of misfits. I remember laughing so much because it was def a band I never could play out loud caz it was such dumb lyrics.
Me first is legit one of my favv bands.
Certainly room to make a sequel to this video, would love to hear your take on Isles & Glaciers. Also the Transplants are worth mentioning.
Personally I find Isles and Glaciers to be boring. It’s very slow and should be full of bangers.
Nailbomb was a sick side project of Max Cavalera, sadly they only released one LP.
Nailbomb motherfuckers!!!
Damn, just had that on. It still crushes all these years later.
@@worksofein6449 and the fact they played 2 shows and called it quits. They were the best side project in 90s

@@vorpalblades he never got his just dues
Foo Fighters also has Pat Smear from The Germs!
One of the best drummer side projects is The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, great Jazz Fusion/Jazz!
Flea has a really awesome EP called Helena Burns!
Three was a really cool Minor Threat/Gray Matter side project!
De Facto started as a Dub Reggae side project of At The Drive In and evolved into The Mars Volta.
Al Jourgensen is like the master of side projects! (Pail Head, LARD, 1000 Homo DJs, Acid Horse, RevCo and Buck Satan)
I remember I fell in love with the Murderdolls back when I was a kid. I was also a Slipknot fan and being that there wasn't google back then, it took me up until I was a teenager to realize that Joey was the guitarist. Still to this day 20 years later I still love them. I jam Murderdolls every once in a while and it takes me back to 5th grade lmao!
Chester Bennington’s side project Dead By Sunrise was surprisingly pretty great. Him with members of Julien K and Orgy. Basically a post-grunge band with hints of punk and industrial
Agreed!
Anything Chester touches is a masterpiece
Not to mention his time with Stone Temple Pilots. Not also mention Fort Minor which is probably one of the few, if only, times that a nu-metal mc pulled of an iconic hip hop album.
Chester did the vocals on a song from Mark Morton's (of Lamb of God) solo album called "Days Gone." The song itself is kinda "eh," but I like it because it was really good to hear Chester scream again. I think it was one of if not the last things he recorded before he died.
i listen to it often...same as his 1st band grey daze
Prophets of Rage were absolutely fantastic live - very high energy and a lot of fun. B Real and Chuck D were great with the crowd. When I saw them in Auckland in 2018, Serj from System of a Down came on stage to perform Like a Stone by Audioslave in honour of Chris Cornell.
Profits of rage is a money grab

Will Swan's underrated Swancore projects that can make a whole concert on his side hustle bands alone. Imagine playing in Dance Gavin Dance, Sianvar, Secret Band, and Royal Coda in one sitting at one concert... .
And Mike Patton can make a whole festival just for his side projects
Yes! Although Royal Coda doesn't feel as much like a side project, it almost feels like Kurt Travis's band. (Even though it's not really)
Sounds unenjoyable as a musician
I absolutely resented angels and airwaves because I felt like that’s why my favorite band broke up. But around 2015 I finally caved and they shot straight up to my 2nd favorite band. Dying to see them live
I will do the thing other way around and share one of my favorites side projects.
“Basic Needs” from Jonathan Davies is the last album that really touched me and totally connect with something very special .
Btw , his collaboration with SKYND is also a pretty great stuff…
The Transplants are a pretty solid side project/super group featuring Travis Barker and Tim Armstrong.
Agreed, that first album of theirs is especially good.
Down is the ultimate side project/supergroup. Nola is legitimately one of the best records of all time in my opinion, and it’s interesting because the band was formed before a lot of the members’ full time bands.
LIFER!!!!
For me Down had more longevity. Also Them Cooked Vultures and Soulfly should be here
Sad you didn't mention Probot. Though Probot only released one album it proved Dave Grohl can be successful in nearly any genre he touches.
A supergroup that did really well imo was DOWN. you had members of Eyehategod, crowbar, Corrosion of conformity and Pantera doing doom and southern rock. I think they aged well and they have killer songs. A good one to check out is Lifer
Corey Taylor was literally making theme music for himself and I love it
It's terrible.
No way dude that sucked the big one.
@@tombstonejones9581 *terribly great
@@elirhoades9418 I bet you’re also quite the life of the party when you go out😂
Didn't think about it like that but now that I've heard it, I agree.
I love both Audioslave and Soundgarden.
R.I.P Chris Cornell.
Audioslave was the best RATM related band.
DRUGS is supposed to be back in the studio right now I think with a whole new album coming out this year. I'm pumped for it. I would also like to hear your take on Isles and Glaciers which is probably the biggest super group in emo with Craig Owens, Johnny Craig and Vic Fuentes all on vocals.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention One Day As A Lion, which was Zack from RATM and Jon Theodore from the Mars Volta and QOTSA. Maybe because they only released a single EP… Had tons of potential though.
Was psyched to see you open with +44/Blink/BCR/AVA though! Other than the self-titled album and maybe TOYPAJ, I think BCR was better than pretty much everything Blink ever put out. Really great mix between hard and soft songs and lyrics that were interesting, provocative, and abstract. +44 really showcases how badly Mark needs Tom during the writing process. Some great ideas and some great lines, but Mark can’t put it all together like Tom does. Ends up feeling shallow and unfinished; sometimes even corny, like in, ‘No, It Isn’t’. Amazing song that Mark proceeds to ruin with the lines-“You swore you wouldn’t lose, then lost your brain. You make a sound that feels like pain.” 😬🧐
Boxcar Racer has got to be one of the best 1 off side project albums of all time
If you do a sequel, I’d add Isles & Glaciers and the sound of animals fighting. You could also add The Word Alive as Craig’s side project that became huge.
TSOAF is a good shout, what a fucking great band
That first TSOAF album is still in my top 10!
I&G is good but it is so hard to give a shit about Jonny Craig bands for me, even older Dance Gavin Dance. One of the few times I have a hard time separating the art from the artist.
OMG, the comparison between Methods and Mayhem and a scene from the Fast and the Furious is spot on.
Although, you can't really have this list without talking about the myriad of projects (of varying quality) from Phil Anselmo .
I’m interested in what part of Tom Morello’s politics you don’t agree with? I’ve researched him a little bit (don’t know much about him other than the music) but was wondering about your take?
Velvet Revolver was actually fucking incredible. I still think I liked stp more, but that first album that vr put out was iconic. Rip Scott
still blast it to this day
A couple of interesting additions to this list could have been Maynard James Keenan's side projects: one the one hand, you have A Perfect Circle, a supergroup that achieved such level of sucess and artistry it almost rivaled Tool... and the you have Puscifer, where not even collaborations with Milla Jovovich managed to make it not suck.
I like Puscifer but I also wish he mentioned MJK!
bro how can you listen to Simultaneous and still tell me Puscifer sucks
Puscifer was damned interesting!
Light the torch, wovenwar, times of grace, haunted shores, stone sour and roadrunner united. All phenomenal
Great points about Blink. I do feel like their stuff with Matt was awesome though. Im grateful we got two albums with Matt rather than nothing without Tom just because Tom didn’t feel like being in the band. Tom’s latest Angels album was rad though!
Great video man... As always! Can I suggest a video about new era grunge and alternative bands like Violent soho, Narrow Head, Soul Blind, Bugg, Superheaven etc etc? Would be cool to hear your opinion on those kids
Narrow Head is tremendous!
END has to be one of my favorite side projects/supergroups. It features members of Misery Signals, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Fit For An Autopsy, and Counterparts.
NECESSARY DEEEAAAATHHHHH!!!!!
Another Supergroup worth mentioning that could have done more than they did was Scar the Martyr, which was one of Joey Jordison's side projects along with Kris Norris from Darkest Hour, Kyle Konkiel from Bad Wolves, Jed Simon from Strapping Young Lad, and Henry Derek who later on formed Act of Defiance with ex-members of Megadeth and Shadows Fall
This is probably one of the best videos he has ever done. I would love to see a part two soon!
Check out Secret Band - it’s basically Dance Gavin Dance with only harsh vocals.
Also, don’t forget the Rancid/Blink-182 crossover band, The Transplants. Don’t be put off by the ‘rap rock’ label because it’s not really representative of their sound
So many Swancore projects! Royal Coda, Nova Charisma, Pushover, and others.
Most Swancore bands are DGD side-projects or post-DGD projects hahaha
If this gets 100 upvotes will you say “What’s up everybody I’m the punk rock MBA and this is Finn McKenty” on the next one?
Yes
Finn, bro you totally forgot Hellyeah. They were an absolutely excellent super group. Well, half super anyways. Vinnie Paul, and Chad gray. Man, there last album 'welcome home' was so good. Finn, if you haven't heard it yet please do yourself a favor and atleast listen to the track 'oh my god' or 'welcome home'. Anyways, I'd like to thank you for the quality content you put out. Take care!
@@ThePunkRockMBA Don't do it, Finn
It's lame
If this comment beats Matt's to 100 upvotes will you not do it?
I'll even give Matt the 12 vote headstart
Velvet Revolver was sooooo good dude. My band in highschool used to cover their songs at our shows. Def crowd favorites.
Box Car Racer was pretty lit. +44 I've had a personal beef with since their formation led to the break up of one my favorite bands, LA postpunk rockers the Nervous return, when they sniped guitarist Shane Gallagher. They were also dropped by Travis Barker's label around that time 2007ish. TNR didn't release their last album recorded around that year until 2019/20. Criminally underrated group, they should have been way bigger.
Love Corey Taylor but that reaction to his solo stuff was hilarious and totally correct :D
The Almost is another decent drummer side project. I don't think they got very big but loved the first album.
I loved the DRUGS album, and looking forward to the new album. I didn’t like chiodos either. At least not with Craig in it. I liked them for one album, and it was the album called illuminaudio
Woo thanks for choosing my next music playlist :) always great videos x except i'm questioning Jeremy Spencers necrophilia fantasies now.. whew
I have to say, that in prime time Damon Albarn and Blur make a great success - but in Europe. They wasn't well known at USA, but it was really well know in other places
Song 2 was big everywhere even the US
You started to mention Audioslave, but didn't say what you thought of them. I'm curious as I loved the group. If you mention them in a previous video I'd love to watch
I was waiting to be triggered, honestly.
Son of Sam is one that could/should have been included here. The first album had Davey Havok from AFI, Steve Zing and London May from Samhain, and Todd Youth (RIP) from Agnostic Front. Really good, underrated deathpunk.
I opened this with hopes of Boxcar Racer being mentioned and… -sniffles- 👏 btw Finn you should totally touch upon Quicksand in a video someday. I’ve listened to the self-titled EP, Slip and Manic Compression and think they’re fantastic.
I remember watching Supergroup when it was coming on VH1 back in 2006 or so. Initially they were going to call the group Fist. Because, according to Sebastian, the five of them were like five powerful fingers coming together to form...a fist. Lots of laughs during that show.
I also remember a scene where Ted woke up the house with a rendition of the national anthem on his guitar. Classic VH1.
I just remember Sebastian Bach being obsessed with the band name SAVAGE ANIMAL
@@mrfarenheit0323 OMG YESSSSS and he was weirdly obsessed with making sure everybody knew he worked out every day.
@@jackalope_butchery YES and he spent a good half of the air time obsessing over being in a band with the nuge
“Damien” from Blur lol. Makes me think of how I used to call Willem Dafoe “William”
I've always enjoyed the gorillaz. The many collaborations on a single album makes each song sound fresh and interesting. The Humans album is a great example of this!
