I love how you showed 0 bias in your video. It was a true comparison of everything you love about the EGO and everything you hate about the Kobalt. Good work.
@@ComputerStuff I have a Kobalt trimmer and was dead set on getting the mower until I saw your video. It was very convincing. I ended up buying a EGO lol So thank you
I bought a 2021 Kobalt 40v rear wheel drive and the thing cuts perfectly short or tall grass bag or mulch every time without fail. I love the fact that my Kobalt has strong well developed steel deck. Kudos
Third season with the kobalt 80v absolutely zero issues and no battery degredation. Cut perfectly fine and for 60 min plus. No regrets to buy that vs the EGO. Was on sale way cheaper than EGO that are sadly never on sale where i live.
Kudos! Glad to hear your Kobalt has been reliable. I'm on season 2 of my Ego and I'm underwhelmed. But I wasn't too thrilled with my busted Kobalt either.
Finally someone actually uses high tough grass to compare the mowers! So tired of seeing videos of people cutting a yard that doesn't even need cut. Well done sir!
I just had to return my kobalt 80v I've had it for a little over 4 years and the self propelled stopped working intermittently i called kobolt they gave me a case # to take to lowes the whole experience was super easy i was in and out of lowes in under 30 minutes unfortunately they no longer carried the 80v in store so they had to order one for me and the even shipped it directly to my house, now i have another brand new mower with another 5 year warranty.
Sorry but you seemed bias against the Kobalt from the beginning. I've had my 80 v push Kobalt going on 4 years. They were clearing out that model and got it for $199 NEW! This year decided to get a self propelled Kobalt and got it for $399 as a tool model since I had extra batteries and chargers when I purchased a Kobalt 80v blower. Gave my old 4 yr old Kobalt to my son who loves it and I'm loving the new self propelled. One thing with Kobalt is Lowe's runs sales BOTH on the mowers and other equipment unlike Ego and you can save considerably. Ego's product line is really expensive compared to Kobalt. I feel you get much more for less with Kobalt. I can do without a spaceship design for a cheaper more practical Kobalt model with a metal base compared to the Ego plastic and wait till you have to purchase a replacement battery for that Ego compared to the Kobalt. Everything is subjective, but for the money, Kobalt serves all my needs.
Hello Atta, thank you for commenting. I should clarify that I dont find the Kobalt to be a bad mower. It's a fine product and dollar for dollar always cheaper than the Ego products. The Kobalt will mow, and that's what you're buying it for. The purpose of the video was really to showcase the differences between the two machines for those who are curious, and to compliment the design team of Ego. I think anyone buying either machine will do just fine.
Agree wholeheartedly. One has to assume that the mower will outlast the battery. When an EGO replacement battery costs more than a new Brand X mower, it's hard to justify the purchase price for the gadgetry of the EGO mower.
I was buying a kobalt lawnmower when I saw your video. All my kobalt tools are very flimsy & hard to adj. I got the EGO. Thx it was $100 more. The HP was what got me. The kobalt doesn't tell you how much HP it has.
One thing and this is just my experience. I had a Kobalt 80v for the last 2 years. The self-propelled drive start to malfunction. I called Kobalt gave them my receipt number. I went to Lowes they did not carry the mower in stock had to order one. I got a store credit that was >>more
I got the 80volt Kobalt udapte with two batteries space number model KMP 6080D-06. On this model you got a 6 mah battery and you would do your 60 min no problem and they correct the handle problem. I got it on sale at 550$ Canadian, that is 350 $ less than the EGO, at this price the Kobalt is a no brainer. Full price it's 850$ only just 50$ less than the EGO so at full price the EGO is the logical choice. Where I live green works, Kobalt and other brand have special sale but never EGO they are always full price.
I'm glad you enjoy your Kobalt and hope you remain happy with it, but perhaps you missed the point I was conveying. It's not about price, there are a variety of design cues (battery door, higher front gate, materials, handle) made better on the Ego and it comes with a better and more reliable warranty. Ego's also have better reputation than the Kobalt in terms of longevity. If your decision is price only - Kobalt it is, but you get what you pay for. If you want a better thought out product and don't mind spending more, go Ego. I can't comment on Green Works. I'll caveat that I used the Kobalt 80V for a full season and it get's the job done . There were annoyances with the blade choking out and the low gate getting caught on hills and it leaving stragglers of grass randomly. The battery decay was also pretty large going from about 60 minute run time to about 45 minute run time by end of season. But... it cut my grass. Anyway, I appreciate your watching and commenting.
@@ComputerStuff EGO was my first choice but I was on tight budget, my gaz mower broke I was hoping changing it in a year. So when I saw the sale for the Kobalt I take a chance. Here in Canada the warranty 5 years on the lawn mower and 3 years on the battery. For the blade of the Kobalt a good sharpening will help because out of the box the blade is not enough sharp.
Okay, it's truth time and you're not going to like it. I've owned and operated for over 20 years a lawncare business in SW FL, and I know a thing or two about all makes and models of mowers over the past 20 years, and I extensively research all the new stuff coming out. I can tell you this is the most staged review I've ever seen on this subject! If I had an hour I could point out all the mistakes in this video, so I'll try to condense. First off he's comparing a brand new, fresh out of the box, top of the line EGO to an at least 2 yr old Kobalt. As you can see the Kobalt's kinda beat up and dirty and there isn't a speck of dust on the EGO. Inthe mower world that's like comparing a brand new Mercedes to a 10 yr old Cadillac. Not apples to apples like he said. Look at the new redesigned Kobalt and it will have all or most of the same features and benefits as the new EGO. By the way he didn't even have the right models when it came to the prices at the end the EGO with the 10ah battery is $850 msrp and never on sale, and the new equivalent Kobalt is $699 and on sale often. Again not apples/apples. When he was cutting the ridiculously high brush (which nobody would or should use a mower for) the deck on the Kobalt was visually about 3/4 of an inch lower than the EGO. That's a huge difference when you're talking efficiency and cleanliness of the cut. Numbers on a deck are not industry standard, it's set by the manufacturer per model. You can have 10 different mowers of various manufacturers and you will have 10 different number 3 deck settings. I could go on with a few more findings, but suffice it to say, this easily the worst and staged review I have yet to see on these models. You take a new and similar EGO and Kobalt now and there is not that much of a difference between them. There are dozens and dozens of far better reviews to watch on this subject. Also check out the Greenworks while you're at it. In closing, please stick to computer equipment, thanks.
@@Bobopotamus My kobalt still going strong and the battery have no retention charge issue. Honestly this year I will need to sharpen the blade but that about it. So for the price really nothing to complain.
Some good points, but definitely not all and feels biased. The height adjustment works fine with one hand on Kobalt and the controls on the handle are spot on. I agree that collapsing the Kobalt mower could have been designed better.
Thanks for commenting Andrey. I'll reiterate that the Kobalt is a fine mower. It gets the job done by all means. But I think the Ego is a more "thoughtful" design.
At 4 minute mark you state you can shorten the the handle for a child ? Mower will not start unless handle is fully extended might want to revisit the comment, have a great day.
I’ve had my Kobalt 80V mower for 7 years now. Original batteries. I have a very thick suburban lawn that I fertilize and water regularly. I always mulch and never lack for power. Maybe the redesigned generation isn’t as good as my Gen 1. But I love my Kobalt.
We have had the 80 volt Kobalt non self propelled for 7 years. Been a great mower and experienced 0 issues. I think you might be a little bias not he EGO.
I respect your preferance for the Ego. That being said, i feel there were some complaints you had about the kobalt that were vastly exaggerated. One example would be you saying the kobalt had no feature to view the battery gague through the battery compartment, while you failed to mention that the mower handle has a built in battery dusplay that makes bending down to read the battery through the compartment completely unnecessary. Perhaps you're right that the Ego is a better buy, but you didn't give the impression of a fair reviewer when you only point out the strenghts of ego and ignore the strengths of kobalt. Your "struggles" with the kobalt bolts and hight adjustment gave off the same energy as an infomercial from the 90's where the actor acts like simple tasks are horribly complicated.
I appreciate your pragmatic response. I'll appreciate trying to channel my inner Billy Mayes with the height adjustment lol. However, I did mention in the video about the battery measurement on the handle, however on our unit an LED was broken! Which I thought was indicative of the rest of the quality of the mower. That said, I think people can have a good expereince regardless of going Ego or Kobalt.
Dude stick to “Computer Stuff”. If you are going to review 2 products then call it like it is. You clearly are biased towards the EGO and it shows. One example would be you calling out the Ego having a clear housing around the battery so you can see the battery indicator and the Kobalt doesn’t have any cool features like that. You and I both know that the kobalt battery housing has a clear front on it so you can see the battery indicator. Also, next time you do a mow comparison…show both batteries are fully charged. Have a good day.
"Dude." I make no qualm about my bias towards the Ego, it's a better design which is what this video showcases. I don't know what Kobalt you have, but MY Kobalt did not have a battery indicator through the lid. It did have one on the handle - but it was faulty which I showed on the video. I don't normally do this, but I am going to defend my stance. The Kobalt is simply not built as well and has less thought in its design. This is par for the course for most of their products, and this mower is one of them. The blade often came loose, the battery indicator was broken out of the box, and as for their warranty? Have you ever tried to get Lowes to warranty a Kobalt product?? It's not as easy as they claim and if you have had a good experience, then you are in the minority. People that like the Kobalt seem to be bias towards its price, which it is less expensive than the Ego. But if you want "the best" the Ego is a better design. Also, as for the battery, both were charged and the battery did not affect its performance. I even went so far as to say the Kobalt picked up more grass in its bag. Does the Kobalt mow? Yes. Is it a fine mower? Yes. Will it do the job? Yes. Is the Ego better? Yes.
@@ComputerStuff Picked up the Ego LM2130SP today. The difference is unbelievable! More torque, not once did the mower sound like it was straining! I cut 4" off! You are spot on with the front design, the Ego doesn't bog down at all. My hubby is 6'4", he's going to love the handle height. While both mowers are 21", the Ego seems to do better at a wider swath. It defiantly leaves fewer missed blades. My yard is my pride and joy. It's thick and plush. I brought it back from near death 2 years ago. (root rot) The Kobalt didn't stand a chance. The only thing I'd change is the handle. A little padding and a tad bit thinner. My thumb kept going numb. It's a small thing. Thanks for the video.
I came across your video on UA-cam while looking for videos of other Kobalt tools. First of all, I own a Kobalt 80 volt, 21 inch self propelled lawn mower with a 6aH battery - not a 5aH as you used, that I purchased from Lowe's, 4, maybe 5 years ago, and have had no issues with it. People tend to prefer what they have purchased over something else so as to not look like they made an unwise purchase, I'm no different, and will admit that. I did add a digital clock to the battery cover to keep up with the time. And, I have never used an EGO product, but being pleased with other Kobalt tools, electric and hand, I went with their mower. I also have a Kobalt extended hedge trimmer, string trimmer and chain saw, all using the same 80 volt battery, and am looking at blowers now. Your bias toward the EGO was evident from the beginning. Do you work for EGO, a relative works for EGO, have stock in EGO? I noticed that the underside of the EGO looked clean, even new, with new blades, while the Kobalt was dirty with used blades. As to choking, we have Meyer Zoysia grass which is very thick and I have never had a choking problem, in fact it speeds up as needed, and I easily have more than an hour of run time. As to the torque, I have no idea of the level, but is is plenty for me. We have a 3/4 acre lot and I usually outline the area and cut around the landscaping and then cut the rest with my Husqvarna lawn tractor. But sometimes, if my knees will let me, I'll cut the whole thing with the Kobalt for the exercise. The lid not staying up is not a problem and neither is the loading/unloading of the battery. As to changing the cut height, I cut at one level in the spring and at a higher lever in the hotter months; not a problem at all to adjust the height, with one hand. I'll point out that I am 72 with Lupus and a heart condition and it is not a problem for me at all. The handle and the battery indicator on the handle work quite well. Folding the handle and setting it upright is not an issue as my attached shop (off the garage) is large enough that I leave it on the floor. Once I set the handle height, I don't change it. I am 6' 2" and my wife is 5' 4" and she will lower the handle when she wants to use it to cut the fenced in area for our Maltese, and returns it to my height setting with no problem. As to your 2nd LED not working, could an EGO, out of the box, possibly have an issue? As I said, the EGO looks new and the Kobalt looks used. My single blade for bagging/mulching works well in either case and I bag usually. As to the Kobalt not bagging after becoming 1/3 to 1/2 full, mine doesn't and it is easy to engage and remove. You appeared to be overacting in your struggling to load the battery, adjust the handle and the height of the cut and the cutting of the grass. You said the EGO had "ballistic" plastic while the Kobalt was of "good quality", not mentioning that the Kobalt deck is steel, but you did say a "metal chassis". In your cutting demonstration, were both blades sharp? Again, the EGO blades looked new. Were both batteries at full charge? How can each one have a 21" cut, yet the EGO cuts wider. I watched the EGO cutting several times and it appears that when you pulled the EGO back, you moved it a little to the left, thus widening the cut area. Again, you overacted in your struggling with the Kobalt. Your referred to the EGO as a "Range Rover" and I am surprised that you did not refer to the Kobalt as a "Yugo", but that was your point. You even said the EGO looked better, but you did say that that was subjective. Maybe you just don't like the color blue. As to warranty, I have not had an issue with any Kobalt product and you said that you had no experience with a warranty with the EGO company so how do you know it is great and the Kobalt service is nonexistent? And finally, you used words such as Hell, damn (twice), pain it the butt (twice) and Jesus Christ (as a curse word) in talking about the Kobalt. Why would you use the name of the Son of God as a curse word? As I stated , your bias for the EGO is overwhelming.
Your message was too long. Didn't read most of it. Saw you complaining about me saying some "bad words" in the end though - get used to it, it's a new world. As for Ego vs Kobalt - I recently released a video where I amended my opinion on Ego. I'm no longer a fan. All the best to you.
@@ComputerStuff As a retired outside sales rep, I always gave my customers enough information to make an informed decision, please forgive me for the length, but I am a detailed person. I will look for your updated video about EGO. A "new world"? No, it isn't. Man's attitude has changed and not for the better.
Clearly biased, go watch the video of actual lawnmower expert’s comparing 24 lawnmowers, with half of them being ICE mowers and they come to the conclusion that the Kolbalt 80V is hands down the best of all the mowers.
Another Kobalt pusher 🙄 -- and yet almost none of you can describe why it's better other than price maybe? I made my points - Ego is a superior product - though it costs more. Want the better build quality and design? Go Ego. Want to get a good lawn mower that will work but also cost less? Go Kobalt. Honda's are nice - Porsches are too.
@@ComputerStuff I have had two Kobalt 80v mowers and I am saving up for the Ego. A lot of the problems you talked about are why I want to upgrade. I have slightly different model than the one you used. My main issue is that the blade on the Kobalt doesn't do anything great, and no one makes after market blades for it.
No, if anything the Ego does a better job at "mulching" the grass and thus less volume in the bag. The "bag" blade may do a better job at bagging though.
That was probably the only thing about your review that troubled me. Of course the mulching blade is going to throw less grass in the bag; that’s opposite of its job and why they provide a separate blade specifically for bagging. I guess the cutting test was very suspect, as well. I wouldn’t expect either of these mowers to chop down heavy weeds a foot and a half tall. Then you mowed over a lawn that didn’t need mowing. What the heck. Wait a week and do your filming and show actual real world results.
I have the kobalt 80 volt works ok. Not as good as my gas toro ..the biggest problem with my kobalt products is that it sucks to get replacement parts and the customer service sucks to. A thing I wish I knew about before hand trying to get a replacement head for my weedwacker cant find. And customer service doesn’t seem to help or get back to me. I dont recommend kobalt products because of its parts availability
I've got the Kobalt 80 volt myself. I really liked the mower. I used it on my back yard. Also at the end of the house and sometimes in my circle drive. This year the plastic fan the blade attaches against broke. From what I've seen they can't be bought and now the mower is useless. I watched this video because I was considering the Sthil mower as a replacement until I saw it has a plastic fan also. Now I'm considering the Ego and possibly the Dewalt as I have a bunch of cordless Dewalt tools.
I'm an idiot complaining about the reviewer being biased. But then I realize later that of course he's going to be biased because he's reviewed both of them and one product proved superior in his eyes; and that it's better that he was confident in his decision rather than painting them as the same and leaving the viewer to go watch another video that is more decisive one way or another.
I'm grateful for this comment Michael. Ultimately, that is exactly whats going on here. A lot of fans don't like that I dinged the Kobalt despite my saying it's an acceptable lawn mower. But I preferred the Ego and transparently listed why. People are allowed to have their opinion and then go buy the one they want. I liked the Ego, other's may like the Kobalt. That's OK!
@@ComputerStuff Haha of course. Exactly. I've been leaning most toward the Ego, too, but am hung up on the post-warranty battery replacement, which costs almost as much as a new mower. So I'm unfortunately still in the undecided camp but hope to finally make my own decision soon.
Why even start a 'even' race when one opponent gets a 100 yard head start while the other is still stuck in the gate? I just purchased the Kobalt 40v self propelled, which is less expensive than both models, and it's thumbs up all across the board! Why compare a Mercedes to a Cadillac when they are both in the Royal family? And don't forget, the 'Cadillac' is the number 1 'American' made car.
Yes this is a EGO commercial. The Kobalt is less expensive and is a better lawn mower. And the handle shows the battery status. Check the prices before you purchase. And Kobalt now has a 25 in battery. 80 volt is a better choice.
@@ComputerStuff I just saw your update. Kobalt is a Greenworks made for Lowe's. Parts are inter exchangeable except for the battery. Glad to see you did a thorough test. One of the best features for Kobalt it is a light mower. The tire tracks disappear after like an hour. The grass looks like it was cut with a razor no tire marks. Now you need to get the newest Kobalt 24 in and do a test on that.
Im thinking getting away from ryobi and trying out new brand. Ego might be tad expensive, especially their batteries. The kobalt looks interesting and might either get that brand or the makita. Heard good things about both of them and having hard time choosing.
Lol, this sounded so “guided” it’s like ok let’s talk price vs cut. Plus I haven’t seen a review on UA-cam that hasn’t said the Kobalt was a dang good product.
I like the way the Ego cuts better than the Kobalt, by a long shot, but I'm going to be doing an "update" video on the Ego - and I certainly have complaints with the Ego.
You forgot to mention who ego is? Kobalt has been around for decades 😮 it's like going for the Tesla brand when you know you're guaranteed to have your Toyota last 20+ years and that Tesla is going to have issues from day one.
That's not a like comparison at all. Kobalt - a contracted third party brand with various warehouses and manufacturing facilities with no real structure to maintain quality control in the likes of Toyota. 2: You're not comparing a bullet proof petrol engine to an EV - you're comparing a contracted companies first soiree into eLawnmowers to a company who started with eLawnmower out the gate. While Ego to Tesla is somewhat analog, to compare Kobalt to Toyota is like comparing Fisher Price to Apple. While I think the Kobalt will be reliable enough for those who buy it, I think the Ego will be as well. And as far as customer service is concerned, I think you'll get similar experiences there. With that said I think the Ego is a better designed product. Does that mean it's the end all be all of lawn mowers? No... it's just a little bit nicer design.
I am sorry, but this review comes across as someone trying to justify their purchase of the more expensive machine. The EGO seems to be a nicer machine and might be. There is no need to go out of your way to try to prove your point. At the 4:45 - 5:30 point of the video you use one hand on the handle to lift and relieve the pressure on the folding release lever of the EGO. This made using the release handle of the EGO very easy. When you went to the Kobalt you did not use one hand to hold up the handle to relieve the pressure/tension on the release mechanism. This makes releasing them much harder. Sure, the EGO system seems better, but no need to pull stupid stunts like this to prove the point. Throughout the video I got the sense you were justifying your EGO purchase. At around the 5 minute mark in the video you lost me and I quit. Seems like I am not the only one who feels this way based on your last comment.
@@ComputerStuff Really? Watch some of the other videos on the Kobalt 80v mower. Many people have com up with a much different and much more effective technique. I do not know them at all. I guess it is possible that they are rocket scientists. Just to be clear to all, I own ZERO EGO and ZERO KOBALT power tools. Just a guy researching and trying to decide what to buy. I have no skin in this game.
@John doe exactly my thought. Also when he mowed the taller grass the kobalt was set to a much lower setting than the ego. I've used both before making my purchase and aside from the handle and looks of the ego the kobalt was a better mower overall for me. I didn't like that the ego deck was plastic either. Both are great mowers though
@@OscarHTX Both mowers were set to equal heights. I cover this after the tall grass test. I have a bias towards good design and the Ego is better thought out. Not to say the Kobalt isn't a capable mower - afterall, it mows. But there are nice "touches" the Ego has that the Kobalt should borrow.
I could tell from the start that you going to favor the ego the way you were nit-picking. I do not own an electric mower or use one. My neighbor does own an ego and cusses it all the time. Ill keep my gas toro..
I can't compare to your 40v rear wheel drive, but the two units I reviewed here I can say that Ego paid a little more attention to the smaller details. That said I'm not a huge fan of the Ego at this point.
Don't buy this crap he's saying..he obviously works for ego..lol. Most kobalt mowers come with a 6ah battery and will handle more than ego...I had an ego,, now I have a kobalt..
The guy doing the review needs to put down the lattes and get some hand strength lol
@@sksman71 all my strength is in my forearms….
I am glad you're having a good experience with your Kobalt, Brian!
We have had the 80 volt Kobalt non self propelled for 7 years. Been a great mower and experienced 0 issues. I think you might be a little bias not he EGO.
We have updated our opinions with a new video.
Yes.
Mine came with a 7.5 battery works well for me. I did use a 5 battery as well both seemed to perform well. $600.00 at Lowes
I'm returning my 80v Kobalt. Less than a year, and it's not working correctly. Keeps shutting off, on short grass.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Perhaps the Ego will do a better job for you.

Sorry dude I just got the kobalt 80v today. I like that it doesn't look like that cheap ego electric mower and the price is better imo.

What about kobalt 40v gen4 for a smaller lawn?
Should work just fine.
Blasphemy? Over a lawn mower?
Lmfao
I like your review
You're one of the few, haha. Thank you!
Your patio area is really nice
Thanks Danno!
The Ego didn’t bag enough grass? Did you see clippings on the ground?
Just because it's a larger battery doesn't mean longer if the mower isn't engineer to efficiencly use the electricity
Sure.
Thank you for weighing in on the customer service issue. I've experienced similar.
And that if the Kobalt proved superior in his eyes, of course he'd say it's superior. Gosh, I was such an idiot at first.
10:45 My weedwacker left the building in disgust! 🤣
I should probably buy one of those robotic weedwackers from Clarkson's Farm.
Glad you like your Kobalt.
Yes this is a EGO commercial. The Kobalt is less expensive and is a better lawn mower. And the handle shows the battery status. Check the prices before you purchase. And Kobalt now has a 25 in battery. 80 volt is a better choice.
You should check out our update on the Ego! :D
I'd go Kobalt over Makita if for any reason other than you can take it to Lowes and scream up a storm if you need to.
The Makita from what I saw takes 18v and can take adapters to fit other 18v batteries.
“Severe grass situation” 💀💀💀
Lol, this sounded so “guided” it’s like ok let’s talk price vs cut. Plus I haven’t seen a review on UA-cam that hasn’t said the Kobalt was a dang good product.
Glad you found one!
I disagree, it looked like the Kobalt cleaned.Field little bit better i'm just saying
How can you use one hand on a system that has two pull tabs?
@@ComputerStuff Really? Watch some of the other videos on the Kobalt 80v mower. Many people have com up with a much different and much more effective technique. I do not know them at all.
