Perhaps the Stihl pruning saw was made for olive trees only. Self-lubrication.
Interesting theory, the oil is of course in the fruit not in the branches though... I did spend a few years working in an olive grove and the one handed chainsaws do make ideal tools for pruning olive trees though.

To be fair the Stihl was the first saw like this on the market five or six years ago. I can imagine that on paper the missing oiler and tensioner looks like a big deal. I own the Stihl and have to say practically you dont need a tensioner because you grap the saw on the tip of the bar, let it hang, open the bolt and close it again. - done in seconds (without any extra tools or mechanism that could break) And I am oiling the chain once every battery charge. So if i change the battery I put a view drops of oil on the chain. Nothing that really stops me from working.
I never worked with the makita or milwaukee. Sometimes you notice that you are missing something when you had it before. But so far I dont miss the oiler or tensioner and would buy the Stihl again - its the most handy and cheapest.

I'm a self-employed gardener and bought the Milwaukee M12 for pruning. I find it excellent, for bigger work I use a Husqvarna 455 Rancher!
I have the Milwalkee as well and I love it.
The smallest saw I run is the 18v top handle Makita, with a 1/4 chain 8" bar. I wouldn't want anything smaller, it's perfect for pruning all day when climbing but it has its limits. Then I reach for the 40v
That's what I thought as I purchased one of those who the hell knows what brand from AMAZON.
It actually works pretty good, comes with spare chain plus 2 batteries and now on my third year which I use to assist me with the 18V Ryobi chainsaw after each storm.
Where'd you get the 8" bar for 1/4" chain for the 18v? I can only find them online in the UK for ~$240 all in with the sprocket and shipping... which seems a bit steep, but maybe that's just what it is?
I have the M18 Hatchet and it is honestly a monster and sort of scary.
I rather like it.
I have the m12 and m18. The m18 shits all over the m12 it's by far more powerful and has a much longer run time with a bigger battery.
I have the M18 to and i love my little monster!
I think the Stihl lacking all that stuff is on purpose and because they’re trying to market it to the gardening homeowner. Messing around with chain oil and chain tension while it’s is no big deal at all to us, to the office working, Prius driving homeowner that’s intimidating stuff and they made it without all that regular stuff on purpose to try and obtain a particular demographic (i.e not us). So basically Stihl decided to market a small amputation machine to clueless people

Nice job. Would've liked to seen the difference in performance on the Milwaukee with an XC or High Output pack. Some of those M12 tools are substantially more powerful with the higher output batteries. I'd think this would be no different. It'd also be interesting to see a kickback test to see if these really have enough kinetic energy to be dangerous in the first place. Haha! I think for the homeowner any of these will be a welcome addition to the gardening tool collection. As with all tools, finding the sweet spot and letting the tool do the work is important for battery life, fewer stalls, and happier cutting. Once you know how far you can push them without stalling or taxing the amp draw, you'll enjoy them. Arborists out there just spit their drinks across the room, but I don't think a 12v tool is for them, except maybe a rotary tool to sharpen them. haha..
I dont see a valid reason for makita to stick with full size chain on their pruning saw. A smaller, narrower chain will provide smoother cut with much less vibrations. Its an obvious choice!
Hanging the Milwaukee chainsaws up is very handy for storage but they leak out all the bar oil when you do so you have to then drain it every time you hang it up which isn't convenient.
All 6 of mine chainsaws leak oil. I think that is one of the features. The one does not leak doesn't have an oiler.
Got the Stihl two years ago and for somebody who had no clue about tools, this was bloody magic. BUT I got it for pruning (it's called a pruner too). Absolutely love manual lubrication - very quick, clean and the original tiny bottle it came with is still not done and should get me through this summer (third one on a tiny bottle!).
But with time unsurprisingly found that it cannot cut for a longer period of time without overheating and switching off. Not for logs. If you're cutting stuff up to 5 cm, this is great. Plus, two batteries are almost required even for a small pruning jobs. This year they released an extension for this and I actually want to get it, but we'll see..

I have the M18 Milwaukee mini chainsaw in a polesaw form. For the mini hand chainsaw I went cheap with a 6" Ryobi but was surprisingly good. Doesn't have an oiler, need to spray the chain/bar with oil from time to time.
I Stihl remember the day i pulled the cord straight out of the chainsaw in 2 pulls in front of the salesman in the Stihl shop back in the day. Allegedly you can start the things in a pull or 2 but we couldnt start that one for a while. Although i do have the M12 pruning saw and its excellent for pruning it does what it says it does and beats using a reciprocating saw
I wanted the M12 originally but then I saw the M18... so I got it. 8 inch bar I wasn't much of a fan of. So I threw on a Stihl Rollomatic E Mini 12 inch bar. Same type of chain, just need a 45 tooth rather than the 44 it says on the bar. Way smoother and doesn't kick as much. But you can get the bar from Oregon to make it easier to get correct chain without guessing. Oregon makes the bar and chain for the Milwaukee saws. Main reason I got the Milwaukee is because the automatic oiler and I have a bunch of Milwaukee stuff already. M18 they sorted out the safety switch.
Do you have a 6ah battery for Milwaukee? Would love to see how it performs with the larger output.😊
The secret with the Stihl is to not force it and let the chain speed do the work
I own the Stihl and other manufacturers. I owned the Milwaukee for a few weeks and sent it back. I regularly use an Amazon 36 volt one with an oil reservoir, not automatic. The Stihl is a lot of maintenance and goes through a lot of batteries. May have to try Makita 18 volt or wait for 36 or 40 volt. You can change bars, sprockets, and chains on the saws. The Milwaukee is the only saw with full house chain. The Stihl has quarter ( 0.25" ) pitch, and the others I believe, use 3/8" pitch.
I own the Milwaukee. I am a landscaper and everyone i work with wants to use it. It cuts fast and last long time for me. I was able to cut a 4" branch that fell. It made quick work of the branch.

Coming from a major chainsaw manufacturer, that Stihl is a real disappointment. Its built cheap and as you mentioned, missing 2 of the arguably most important features of a chainsaw, ie: the chainsaw tensioner and oiler.
Although they are totally different tools, in your opinion what would you prefer if you could only choose one: a mini chain pruner or a mini recip saw? Obviously the chain would be quicker and best for pruning or making rough cuts, but these tools just don’t seem to have the power or versatility as a recip saw.
100% would go with the recip saw

@@khuongathebounga4141 you’re exactly right. I have the DeWalt atomic one hand recip saw and I use that thing for all sorts of tasks. I can put a pruning blade on it and trim branches then immediately put a metal cutting blade on it and cut piping or whatever. It’s hard to beat the versatility of a tool like that. Plus, it’s close in size to these mini chainsaws.
I was looking at the video and you mentioned battery indicator light on the M12 Milwaukee chainsaw How does that work? Please tell me
No chainguard is extremely bad for a handsaw like that. A full or half length doesn't need one as the top guard will brake the chain quickly to a stop, but the milfookye appears to be made for slicing fingers off.
If you have ever used anyone of either of these tools you would not be worried about “chainguards”. I have the Milwaukee and the Stihl. The Stihl is made for very light pruning, the kind of tasks that are too large for a hand pruner. Its a great tool for occasional use. All these little chainsaws are great.
A knife takes effort to chop a finger off. A chainsaw will do it in milliseconds before you'd even notice the pain.

Yeah I think that the chain is holding the makita back, it would be interesting to see it with a type of a chain milwaukee uses.
Oh and BTW I really like the small edits you added, but just a small note, the ones where you weigh the tools are slightly off ;)
I bought the stihl 26 and something else that is wrong with it is the batteries will not charge in cold conditions. The battery charger just shows a red light rather than green, and will not charge at all. You said about not being powerful enough to kick back, my wife had 9 stitches in her finger from kickback, no gloves being worn Doooh! I've just ordered a Makita 18volt version of this, as all my other gear is that and the batteries still charge in freezing conditions. Question; could you fit the Stihl chain to the Makita saw?
I own the Stihl and those 2 things made me wonder all the time. I do a Lot of hedge pruning and use it for thicker material. The fact that you use it just a few times a day, the battery last very long, and oiling manually isnt a big thing. Even the tensioning isnt needed very often. If you clean it after work, you do this anyway.
The pico-chain does very clean Cuts, without need of muscle Power. It's super ligtweight.
If it ever should get replaced, then i would try the Makita. Milwaukee is too big and clumsy.
Thanks for the video. I'm a landscaper and quite often have to run a chipper so have been using a cheap battery pruner I was given as a gift to cut any knuckles or odd angles off. Been looking to upgrade to a sthil or milwaukee and on seeing this video, not having an oiler on the sthil is a deal breaker for me. Milwaukee it is.

As someone who has and uses every size of chainsaw, from 120cc to 25cc climbing saws, I can actually back up Stihl’s design here. It shouldn’t cost nearly what it does because of the savings, but it’s not inherently bad design I think. Small chains don’t need much tensioning, and also don’t need much in the way of oiling. My 25cc climbing saw sips oil and with good non fling it can be left empty for a good while and it’ll stay wet. That said, an oiler would still be useful. A tiny chain doesn’t need much tension though.
The smart swipe on the knuckle is just for answering phones etc. It's on the knuckle for users that have grease oil etc on fingers so that doesn't transfer onto your screen of your device etc 👍
I could be wrong, but for those smart swipe gloves I think you can only touch screen on that part that saw smart swipe on the outside of the index finger.
Check your packaging, it makes it clear where to touch the screen with.

I have the Milwaukee, generally very happy with it and it's cut down trees far larger than it should. The only thing which really annoys me is the oiler - It pisses oil all over if you store it in the wrong orientation which leaves me with little confidence about its hanging hook.
I used to have a chainsaw like that, I wound up draining the oil every time after use for a while until I got rid of it.
I wonder if the LXT version of the Makita chainsaw has a bit more torque than that one because a tool like this would be quite handy

Extension handle is clever , connects to battery slide , bet could be used with lot of LXT tools .
I mean, if you go camping with the family, its nice to bring along when you get tired with the axe / handsaw / pulled chainsaw. Also the missus and boys can help out with the firewood. sure not something you use daily, but handy for such a portable baby size.

Stihl pronounced shh-teel. Not used the Stihl, but out of the Milwaukee & Makita, I found the Milwaukee was more comfortable, but much heavier. Chain stop speed on both is much better than many petrol chainsaws. I’m in the uk so may have a different model. Both have issues of clogging up when used on branches with leaves. Personally, I just go straight to my Ego Pro for most jobs.
I have a timber farm and tons of chain saws. I also have a lot of M12 & M18 milwaukee tools, so when the Hatchet came out, I picked one up. I checked out the stihl because I have many of their saws. It just seemed like too much of a toy. I use the hatchet for pruning but find that the shape limits where I can use it. I also find that the lockout switch is super awkward. To the point where I will grab a different saw. But, I like to throw the Hatchet in with my logging gear. There I use it for clearing trails, limbing felled logs. I will clear all the nasty small stuff with it and get the bigger limbs with like a 16" saw. I have an echo electric that is perfect for that task. I use the bigger packs on the hatchet and the run time is great. It seems like all the electric saws will stall easier than expected. The echo sometimes requires cycling the brake, otherwise it just requires letting off and re-engaging
It’s tight like a tiger…lol! I’m impressed with your voice impression skills when you said “baby chainsaw” in the intro…very nice! Nice observation on the chain covers for the thumbnail. My weird observation was the fact you wore gloves for Milwaukee and Makita but not Stihl, with that kind of performance I don’t blame you. I will say that if you swap out the M12 bar/chain for the M18 Hatchet’s 8” bar/chain it made the M12 better for me and how I use it!

Was the Stihl oiled? I'm getting the Milwaukee, I have many of their power tools and I really like them. I'm just a DIYer for house projects and car repairs.
Have used the Stihl a few times now- its a good small pruner - its not supposed to be used for extended cutting - hence no oiler
Very nice review. “Baby chain saw!!!” :). Really surprised at Stihl - they should at a very minimum have an oiler. I can almost forgive the tensioner, but seriously Stihl….*sigh*. I was going to get the Stihl for my Bro-in-law but I think I’ll find him something else.
I have always loved and recommend Stihl chainsaws. Stihl shouldn't have released this yet it isn't worthy of their name. I think a Ryobi version would be better performing than this.
The distain for Milwaukee really shines thru on this one and any chainsaw I’ve ever used thats had an auto tensioner has been shit ime but that’s just my 2 Pennies….Believe me I wanted to love the hikoki multivolt saw I think it’s model CS3612da but it’s so far behind the m18 2826-20 it’s not even fair, I will say one negative thing about the m18 chainsaws are that they kill battery’s like no other tool I’ve used especially the top handle so you’ll definitely wanna keep ur warranty handy lol ik you don’t need any paperwork to make a claim just a turn of phrase but seriously only use xc6.0 & 8.0ah HO packs in them the exception being the HD 12.0 of course and using that and the forge imo you’ll have best performance being the least timeouts I’ve seen yet and the new forge xc6.0 is my favorite as it’s light an more notably it has less voltage sag/drop when under load than any of the other packs.
Fun video. More discussion of the price of the saws would be nice. The Stihl would be totally worth it if it only cost $20.

If they work like the leather Milwaukee gloves, you have to use your index finger knuckle for touchscreens! (about where the logo is)

Stopped buying Stihl a couple of years ago and switched back to Husqvarna. Their whole product line has gone downhill especially chainsaws. I have a couple of mates working for a huge power supply company as linesmen and the company has now stopped buying stihl saws and switched to Husqvarna. Such a shame as they used to be the “go to “
All of Stihl’s cordless products seem like toys. Gas: I always compare them with Echo. For cordless, they were no where close to consideration.

I was going to buy one of the GTA26 and when looking at it in the store and saw it didn't have an chain oiler and they expect you to oil the chain link by link before each use like its a bicycle. Nope, lost a sale. Didn't know about the tensioner or its a brushed motor, crazy.

I appreciate this video cause I was not trying to pay 200$ for a baby chain saw when the bigger ones are the same price. Now that I see Makita has made their baby saw goof proof and high quality...take my money 😂😂😂
I can see someone not au fait with chainsaws being a bit timid with them, even this size. If not used to using one, and having a slight distraction at some stage could see the user ending up at A&E.
Mind you, that goes for any power tool. I got a slight distraction when putting down an electric plane , but the blade had not come to a full stop. I put a finger right in to the moving blade. Yeah, a wee bit messy and a tad painful.
I’m an elderly lady with one apple tree and a neighbours overhanging tree I have to prune, I’m looking for a small chain saw I could use myself. I’m still a bit confused as to the best one to get. The Stihl so I hear has a extension pole but I wonder if it would be too heavy and awkward for me.

They didn’t have any at the time for sale and didn’t know when they’d get some.

I have the Mikata 36V pole saw, its great saw and I'm constantly surprised by it, but it has the same annoying over sensitive cut out as the 12v.
I think there is a good market for these to do easier 1 handed cutting for branches and small trees cutting into kindling. While I can do 1handed with my stihl msa 60 it is not very safe and gets tiring quick.

M12 line is quite bulbous. I have somewhat larger hands, so I don't mind. When it come to the high draw tools, i only use the 4 amp, 5 amp or 6 amp. 3 amp and below batteries just dont cut it
The Ryobi equivalent also has no oiler.
I wasnt expecting much out of these 12v little baby saws, and it looks like they delivered about what i expected!

I have the 18v Makita and it preforms much better than that 12v version.

Milwaukee M18 & 12.0 Ah batteries are the best for small/technical jobs
I’ve had 2 Makita DUC150Z in the last month and after a short session, neither will tension the chain for more than one cut. The first one the safety failed which makes a very dangerous tool. I’m likely to sent the second one back for credit. It’s disappointing as have a real need and love Makita tools usually.

I had another birthday whilst waiting for the Stihl cutting demo to end …….. 😳. Your review is excellent. I own a Stihl petrol chainsaw and multitool with 5 attachments. I’ve been considering buying the hand pruning saw. Not now. No auto lube, no auto tensioner, a brushed motor (😳), no spare battery, badly designed carry foldup. And great scope for a kiwi company to make an add-on to legalise the Milwaukee, as it performs really well. I wonder if online sales from Oz would be an option in NZ. We are a bunch of wusses, aren’t we? Over governed with safety rules. If a user cannot look after their own safety by applying care and initiatives, then they should not get out of bed! Its not a maybe there worried about those who fail to read the instructions and use the safty bar as a handle. It is the major complaint from all who toss the instructions. To blame the tool for this HUGE user failure would not be logical or fair. I do agree that those who are instruction or manual challanged should stick to the other two offerings or better yet get someone with better judgment to do the job for them. I did enjoy the review and the prospective.

it is not alone a lot of regulations on new type of power tools are outdated.

I'll stick with the Silky pull saw.
For sub 3" green limbs, it's hardly any slower, 1/6 the price, no battery charging, no oiling, no chain replacements or tightening. Lighter, smaller, more reliable, fits in narrower gaps. Maybe if you were a commercial landscaper or had a hand/arm disability it would be worth it, but for normies like me there's little point other than "expensive new toy".
For sub 1.5" green limbs a sharp set of long handle loppers could keep pace with these. Again at 1/6 the price.
Realistically, when are you cutting 50+ limbs every day, where these tools could actually shine, other than as a pro landscaper?
Knuckle typing is for when the fingers of the gloves are covered with mud, oil, or, whatever. That way you don't get it all over your phone (hopefully).
I'd just take the glove off. Will be much easier than typing with a knuckle.
Makita in this video is not agresive because it used with 12v battery, it provided with 18v battery.
Little late here but… I’m invested in Milwaukee 12v and Makita 18/36v. I’ve had the hatchet since it first came out. It’s easily one of my most used tools. With a 4.0 battery I’ve cut everything from limbs to small trees right at its limit. I always keep my left hand behind the guard and on the motor housing. Sucks you can’t get it in NZ. Be glad to send some video of mine at work. 😂
The Stihl is a toy and disappointing (also own Stihl). The Makita is nice but not for me, can’t get past the top flip guard.
The Milwaukee with the 4.0 battery is a great tool but also Milwaukee makes many other tools that are compatible with the batteries that was one of the reasons I bought it but the saw works great for its size and Curt’s larger branches very well.
I just dont think that the 12v platform is up to the task for this application.
These seem more dangerous because they're so lacking in power. You push down to get the cut and the push through could result in injury.
That's what I thought when I purchased a who the hell know what brand is that mini chainsaw.
It actually works and safe.
Mind you to wear all safety gears, check out your tools before snap in the battery pack, and watch out for your fingers and limbs.
seems to me that one handed sawzalls make more sense than these. stihl looks like another company making excellent products in a different category trying to yolo into a new segment with inferior design than the competition.
I know a few arborist using the Stihl daily for a few years. They said it's light and enough capacity for trimming when they are up in the tree.
WIll be interesting to see their choice between Stihl and Makita

I don't think I'd get any of these. I just tried out the Ryobi HP 18V pruner chainsaw (6 in) yesterday and seems like it would outperform these. Might be a small weight increase.
The Stihl seems to have highest chain speed but too low torque, limited battery platform, and no oiler. Makita seems also a bit lacking in torque, which seem mismatched to the chain they included. Milwaukee seems the best of the bunch, but m12 isn't my favorite because of the battery insert and what it does to the grips/ergonomics.
Milwaukee is like the guy that measures from underneath and Makita is the guy the rounds down when he tells his size.
