I know I’m late to the game :) but As an SLP, always best to consult an SLP who is specialized in AAC. They will do a comprehensive AAC evaluation that includes a variety of devices and programs. They will consider a lot of different variables involved in the process of finding a device that best fits their needs!
Also, if you are still using aac- PLEASE ensure you have an SLP running point on how to use his device at home. Communication is a god given right and not about compliance. If the child begins to see the device as a “work device” instead of a way to share thoughts, comment on things, and all the different ways we communicate? You will not see adequate progress!

as a special ed teacher for 17 years... I would side with the speech therapist and if they are projecting your son to be non verbal they a device would be more practical and give him greater freedom and choice ... I have seen functional communicators with acc devices if they are allowed to have them with them at all time (the same device) .... I have never seen a kid use a communication book well... for communication I would always side with speech therapy

It took our family years to get familiar with what we had to do to keep us going. Our oldest daughter is the one with major disabilities (she is 19). We say we take one second at a time. At the end of the day other we are in pieces or we are able to breathe. I KNOW THAT YOU AND WILL ARE AMAZING PEOPLE. It will get better!

Hey guys, please take all this therapy slowly and daily.
I worked ABA and it's really hard on the workers to come into your home and feel your stress. It affects everyone.
Do you have a designated area for them to work? Do you have a way to set up a camera and record them so you feel safe about it all? The therapists will feel less stress but be sure to be able to monitor.
I'm not sure how it works these days but in the long term where else will you get all this help if you give up?
Some of the kids I worked with grew up and graduated high school and became great adults and without the structure of the therapies I don't think they would have done that well.
Hang in there. This will all just be memories before you know it. It goes by very, very quickly.

No. Speech therapists are the experts in communication & ABA are the experts in behaviour. If speech needs to try things out, ABA need to deal with it. Sorry to be so blunt, but having worked in medical settings & social care settings, I can see that ABA are crossing a line here. You're the parent & you have the final say. If you need to take time with Griffin to work on it yourself (either you or Will) while you find the right device for Griffin, then ABA have to deal with that. If you want Griffin to be able to use the device while with ABA, then they have to deal with that too. ABA can't be allowed to affect the quality of Griffin's key therapies like communication. Maybe get the speech therapist to speak to ABA.

Does Griffin get speech therapy in school? Maybe the school could be a good resource to ask their thoughts on what to do regarding device only or just teaching the pic cards.

Have you talked to the ABA therapists and managers about how you are feeling? Communication is the most important part when you have people in your home. I deal with this when I have therapists in my classroom. At one point I had 7 adults not including me and 15 kids... that was a lot! But communicating with the therapists and discussing how you can help them and how they can help you is important. Because it is your home and they are your kids!

You moved to get services for your children and they clearly need them. Create a spot in your home for the therapists and kids--maybe your downstairs? No, therapy and having people in our homes is not easy for us, but as parents, we need to deal with it and do it for our children.

It is just wild how different devices and apps work so differently for each kid! We originally started with Symbotalk since it was free and my son never really responded well with it, but when Talk To Me Technologies came recently to our Speech appointment, he immediately was attracted to it! (I’m not sure what the app is called yet, we are doing an 8 week loan with therapy and then a 4 week loan at home, so I am really hoping he will be able to communicate with us soon! It seems promising!

I had the catch 22 of daily carers & services for my parents - people in the house is so disruptive & their constant feedback & information is overwhelming to have to constantly absorb - but I literally couldnt do without giving my parents the best I could find for them! I think the caregiver/mum suffers more - a constant invasion of your private space & constantly worrying about your other children, as well as if its working out for your special needs kids.....hang on in there Emily - ONE day at a time. Love from Scotland x

Also, what do you mean by ABA wanting time wait for one and only for the speech device? I don’t watch regularly enough I guess I’m sorry, I get so busy!
However what I will say is that I would go with your intuition, choosing one way or the other will not make or break it I promise!
I always felt so much pressure like if I didn’t have Yi communicating before 3 that the world would implode and I would fail him, and as his 3rd birthday came and went, as time passed I started seeing growth in other areas and realized that there is time and there is room for different decisions ❤️ good luck with everything!

I just got my first like from ur guys i cldnt be more over the moon but i wanna say one more thing. I know i dont know u and i never met ur mom either. But the episodes where u lost her are the only episodes of u channel i literally cant watch. I loss my mom and my BEST friend in 2013. Ppl say it gets better i dont think thats so. Yes the days go by and i think of her passing less in daily life but if i talk abt her or watch like ur ep where ur mom passed i cry so hard i cant breathe. So imo anyway the hurt stays the same i?just dont hurt as often if that makes sense. But i say this because from what u have told us of ur mother shes like mine. She wld tell u right now that YES its hard, but roll up ur sleeves and DO IT. Get it done and ur twins will REAP the rewards!!!!! And i know im a stranger alot of us are on here BUT if u need support or words of encouragement WE GOT YOU GIRLIE!!!! Trust me I KNOW thibgs wld be maybe not easier but def smoother with ur mom backing u up. I know. Im a bartender of 22 yrs and when covid had me out of work for 9 mons last year I KNOW if my mom was here she wld have said dont worry I will help make birthday/christmas happen for my 5 yo son. I?KNOW she wld have. Vut shes gone so i got 2 extra jobs at walmart and a gas station to make it happen. So?i KNOW what its like to lose ur support system even if she just inspired. I know. Ur strong. U can do this. Sorry if i went off and said way too much.

    Hi guys ☺️
I’m not sure how everything works there.. not sure if you’re able to answer in a future video or potentially someone in the comments? But hypothetically speaking if you were to stop ABA therapy, that doesn’t mean you’d be unable to go back to it at a later date, does it?
Everyone seems to think if you stop ABA therapy that you’re stopping all therapies for the boys but I don’t sense that’s quite the truth? If they’re in school, are they not already getting additional care / therapy? Could you not speak to your ABA therapists & talk about cutting time back just for a little while, not just for your sakes but for the boys - so not to overwhelm them - & for everything just to settle a bit? Maybe do 1 full day a week rather than 3 half days? And speak to them about how you’re feeling. They’re there to help all of you 💗
You’re at the beginning of your journeys, don’t be so hard on yourselves. It’s such a lot to take in & absorb, & I understand your worries / concerns about not giving the other children enough attention - I’m pretty sure that’s not the case but I understand as parents that’s a very real worry / thought process. Take each day as it comes, talk things through with Will, & maybe you can both talk to ABA about how you’re feeling about things? Xx

Wont ABA be there less when they are in school more? Can you cut the number of hours therapist are there? Do the times overlap so there are less hours they are at your home? I think you should voice your concerns with them. Maybe as they get older the boys will need less. Hang in there. BTW I don’t think you need to worry so much about how clean your house is as long as it is safe for the kids. I don’t mean live in filth but if they are there everyday they are going to see some messiness.
