+Engineering Explained I love Miatas, because of a Miata my buddy donated his Greddy exhaust and a cold air intake to my Integra before he sold his to buy a Miata.
+Nicola Furlani The main issues were wrong line fittings and lines, and not having correct tools and etc they still got it done, and seeing a massive production like they are stuff up and have problems to me makes it feel more intense and realistic
haha ethan is like "i did a thing!" fun to see how hes progressed in the channel into a presenter with the main team. hes a fun and silly guy, a very nice addition overall.
MAN, you all need some QuickJack's for that show! I've got the BL-5000SLX which is overkill, but by SO much easier and better to work with and film and it runs on 110V
With all the talk of Car Throttle vs Mighty Car Mods, what if they just got together and partied. Talk some car stuff, bring Engineering Explained along, have some mad fun.
Time Attack Battle at the Sprint Course (the one from The Ultimate IS200 Track Build, Project 330d, etc.): Marty's Super Gramps vs Project 330d (if Alex didn't sell it). Also, an Offroading challenge against the Mad Max S15/the Subaru Outfap vs Floyd the lifted X-Type. Track Battle: Phil vs Moog's Mini. Finally, Project IS200 vs 2SEXY. Those are some battles that I would like to see, if the cars and people could be at the same place at the same time.
I normally don't enjoy carthrottle videos or alex tbh but this one was really good, I'm impressed. Very clear what you were doing and nothing was missed out in a relatively short video. Well done, more like this please.
+unityelt Because the engines they work on wasn't made to be turbo. Mazda had designed this engine in mind. Everything that mcm have done to do with turboing they had to get fabricated like phil(manifold) but obviously they didn't show the process.
+unityelt MCM fabricated pretty much everything by themselves with their mates, while this install makes use of ready-to-use aftermarket parts. It's really not fair to compare fully custom install with this one.
Wandering around a show of manufacturers of bolt-on parts and modified whatnots asking for some tools to put said parts on the car. Enjoyable and humorous. None would expect folks to try to install their parts right on the spot. But good fun asking for needed parts
Christian Augustin The chance that all metal is going to the oil filter is none existing. They should have just remove the oil pan. That is how its done properly. This way is just lazy.
Patrick Carta I don't think you've ever done a turbo install on an mx5. I also don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. But that's just me, so let's just leave it at that.
+Christian Augustin Drilling and tapping an oil pan has nothing to do with any make or model. Patrick is saying metal shavings + oil = bad. I am sure the oil filter will pick up most, maybe all of it. Still not worth risking, would suck to do a turbo install then pull the engine.
Amazing video ~ Edit: Damn! Phil sounds incredible! Haha great job to everyone involved, even the ~4 people who helped pitched in by donating a part or drilling a hole for you!
Normally i go fast forward if a long episode becomes boring, but this episode had my attention for 30 min. - Good stuff and very entertaining, I LIKE! ;-)
Because of Alex from Car Throttle, Rudnik from Haggard Garage, and Greg from TheCarPassionChannel.... I'm now convinced on one day turbocharging my MX-5 Miata :) thank you ily
+Curtis Walker think about this though, Phil weighs about 2 times less than David's 240, but it will have about 100 less hp. However since the 240 is using a 2jz it is going to have more power (I believe David said its going to be around 350?) and since the 2j is almost twice as big as the engine in the miata, it will have more torque, but I still think the miata has a chance just because of the power to weight ratio.
+Christian Augustin Did you cringe when they weren't doing the things suggested in the How to Turbo vids on CarPassion? (Like greasing the bit used to drill into the oil pan)
i'm sure there's still lots of metal shavings from drilling the oil pan drain hole. i always just took off the pan to make the return hole, not that much extra work for much better piece of mind.
Looks like a perfect time to do the left side coolant reroute so it flows along the fender wall instead of along side of the block next to the exhaust manifold...
You should definitely check out a UA-cam program called "Roadkill" they engine swap a Camaro at an American car convention, can't remember which one though. Great program.
*Takes off original 4 to 1 manifold* "A 4 to 1 limits this and that and everything else, so we'll put a 4 to 2 to 1 on because it's better" *Puts a 4 to 1 back on*...
but its turbo now. so it doesnt matter really as the turbo is going to compress air into the engine instead of NA. 421 headers were only made for N/A for better natural air to travel

you should do an engine rebuild with new valves, wider lobes on your camshaft, and put in light weight pistons that have been balanced to harmonize the engine.
no they cant they probably cant change a tire its turbo yoda and all the other people who are actualy mechanical inclinde that do EVERYTHING they just write checks and make music
No they did prety mutch nothing and its fucking shit dont get me wrong there both great channels but they would be so mutch better if they were doing the work and knew what to do
+Martin Allan Then who did all the work on Daihatsu Cuore, dude? They are not trained mechanics, that's true, and yes, a lot of stuff lately was done by other people -- but that's mostly because Miles and Alan can do it faster. After all, isn't that's what subscribers want, for episodes to come out more frequently? Remember the earlier episode, when Marty drove old white Legacy with leaky windshield. When he gutted the shit out of it to switch shells, most of the work was done by him.
+Graham Williams mcm is a mod channel, this is more general, of course there will be footage on mcm. Just like them what is wrong with you people. Cant wait to see Phil chopping left and right.
+Martin Allan FALSE. Superchargers can have HUGE amounts of boost, it depends on the pulley you put on the car. Also porting them is good for HP as well. If you are going in a straight line... Meh, turbo I guess. If you are on a track, go SC. The turbo boost takes what seems like forever, and then all the sudden you have sooooo much boost, your rear end wants to be in front.
Yeah its all dependant on what you're doing that why I said prefrance but I would personally avoid charging you're car and just go for naturaly aspirated then there is not lag and less parts to worry about going boom :)
Really enjoying this series , there was of course a tedious inevitability it would need a clutch with all the extra power and being already old. Look forward to the rest, very entertaining great channel , cheers
I enjoyed this build. I thought that it was pretty cool to do it at a show. It does remind me of the LS7 427 build that Roadkill did but like someone else already mentioned, that's an engine swap, this is a turbo install and they have a much bigger budget. Regardless, this should be a fun car when it's finished. I have a 97 EJ8 Civic (US) with a B18B1 non-VTEC with a 63 trim turbo running on 8 lbs and an Integra GSR transmission and I'm about to turn the boost up to 15 lbs once I get new injectors and a tune. I'm looking for 350 whp. Sounds dumb in a FWD but I have a buddy with a 7 second Civic hatch so it can't be that crazy.
I wondered why there was a turbo on Phil at that show! I thought I'd missed a detail of it being turbocharged somewhere, also really weird seeing all you CarThrottle guys irl.
Interested that the turbo bolts straight on without the need for any change to the engine internals such as pistons, headgasket etc.. Is this not likely to cause pre-ignition? I'm looking at getting an MX5 in the near future as a track project and these videos have been great so far, Keep up the good work!

I thought that an exhaust manifold was suppose to have all the (in this case 4) pipes at the same length for the maximum performance, otherwise it wont work as well as it should? Please correct me if I'm wrong this is something I just remember form something I heard some time ago.
Wondering how Phil would do in a match-up against Mat Watson's MX-5 from Auto Express (which, if I recall correctly, was completely coincidentally also tuned by Skuzzle Motorsports)...
just wondering, is there presumably not enough oil pressure to run an oil train into the existing sump plug? obviously gravity won't work over the last few inches, but the weight of the oil in the upper tube should be more than needs to move up into the sump? or would you end up with a lock Because of the volume of oil already in the sump?
That compressor surge! Lol, funny install. Your clutch is going to need some attention once you get that thing running well. Does the ECU have provisions for an electronic boost controller or wideband input? Seems a bit dangerous the way it sits right now.
when you maked the hole in the sump, the sump magnet retains the iron particles, or do you changed after the oil to clean the system from metallic dust particles?
All the favours you had to ask for installing this turbo just makes you realise that car people are some if the nicest most friendly people of any hobby.
This was fantastic. Doing a turbo install live at an auto show? Love it! Also ready to watch the 60-90 second gasket install! :)

they already were leaking petrol everywhere and he said it was ok so I don't think oil would matter either

This is the best tutorial I’ve seen of fitting a turbo
And it isn’t even a tutorial

I thought I'd got away with it..
when clocking the turbo, is that shmees Porsche?
It is indeed

+Jake Bell Obviously Phil.
+Car Throttle look at mcm's miata for ideas they did a build like this
yes his license plate

This makes mcm look like they took years to turbo their miata.
+unityelt Because the engines they work on wasn't made to be turbo. Mazda had designed this engine in mind. Everything that mcm have done to do with turboing they had to get fabricated like phil(manifold) but obviously they didn't show the process.
+Carliber oh i know that, they just made look so simple. I wasn't talking bad about mcm, i like that they showed more of the process.
unityelt Yeah, i like mcm but when they drag something that could be shown in 5 episodes over like 10 it can get tedious
+Carliber DragonBall style releases
+unityelt MCM fabricated pretty much everything by themselves with their mates, while this install makes use of ready-to-use aftermarket parts. It's really not fair to compare fully custom install with this one.

The phrase on your shirt should say "Miata Is Always The Answer" it's an acronym for miata
Cody Hurley loool take ya time!
Fantastic video, it's always awesome to see peoples reactions to the turbo sounds for the first time!
That was awesome, I could watch these kinds of vids all day :D
This is awesome and it was amazing to meet and get a picture with Ethan and Alex on the Saturday morning in the foyer.
You seriously need to remove the oil pan and remove the metal shavings from the drilling and tapping.
No they don't. The oil will capture the metal shavings and they'll get cycled out in the next oil change along with the oil filter.
Christian Augustin
The chance that all metal is going to the oil filter is none existing.
They should have just remove the oil pan. That is how its done properly. This way is just lazy.

love you guys at CarThrottle, will be in England in the next week, hopefully I'll see you around!
mad, 2 day turbo build! great job lads, lookin forward for some driving footage :). greets from the Netherlands
Amazing video ~
Edit: Damn! Phil sounds incredible! Haha great job to everyone involved, even the ~4 people who helped pitched in by donating a part or drilling a hole for you!
Surprised that I found half an hour of installing a turbo enjoyable
Normally i go fast forward if a long episode becomes boring, but this episode had my attention for 30 min.

Is that Shmee's Porsche in the background?
+Jack Dent I doubt anybody else has Martini livery on Sapphire Blue GT4 like Shmee does
Yeah at the end you see his reg plate (license plate)
Because of Alex from Car Throttle, Rudnik from Haggard Garage, and Greg from TheCarPassionChannel.... I'm now convinced on one day turbocharging my MX-5 Miata :) thank you ily
Phil will have some zest now!
love this video man. it shows everything in a brief general manner.
phil vs 240smurrfx
YES! I would love to see that
+Timber Kriley the 240 is a twin turbo 2jz swap Phil would even compare to smurfx
would still be cool
+Son Le not really if anything Phil should go against mcm miata or s2k
+Curtis Walker think about this though, Phil weighs about 2 times less than David's 240, but it will have about 100 less hp. However since the 240 is using a 2jz it is going to have more power (I believe David said its going to be around 350?) and since the 2j is almost twice as big as the engine in the miata, it will have more torque, but I still think the miata has a chance just because of the power to weight ratio.
I think Ethan's hardwork paid off, great video!!!
4:40 waiting for him to scratch the paint and knock out the side window when catching the manifold
These guys are so bloody intelligent. Enjoyable but went over my head. So smart
So the aftermarket headers were put on for no reason?
I like how he opens the glove box and there was a pair of combs!! lol
Broke and Boosted should be a good challenge for Phil.
+Christian Augustin Did you cringe when they weren't doing the things suggested in the How to Turbo vids on CarPassion? (Like greasing the bit used to drill into the oil pan)
***** yeah they skipped a few steps but I'm not too worried.
I gotcha, still time will tell if they did good enough. Poor Phil, the test Gerbal MX-5.
Sounds fucking sick! The revving of a turbo just makes me smile all the time.
Alex is like a little non green version of hulk!
+Alberto Pettine LOL, I'll take that ;)
+Alberto Pettine with voice of the 40ies radio announcer.
i'm sure there's still lots of metal shavings from drilling the oil pan drain hole. i always just took off the pan to make the return hole, not that much extra work for much better piece of mind.
Funny how a snail makes the car go faster.
+Joshua Williams Wayyyyy faster :D
Weight reduction has not been applied.
Joshua Williams maybe the snail is that one from Turbo
That must be one of the cleanest miatas, I love the really relaxed vibe that comes from miatas
You should do a sleeper build of a lada 21011
Love these videos, great seeing the mechanics behind the engine and how it goes together
Nick: You guys need to find some tools.
Alex: Okay *finds all the hot girls and asks them if they have tools*
I see you Alex...
Looks like a perfect time to do the left side coolant reroute so it flows along the fender wall instead of along side of the block next to the exhaust manifold...
BUT! Is Phil faster than the MightyCarMods Turbo Miata?
Probably, theirs was only a 1.6
+Original Name then what is phil? How many cc?
Phil is a 1.8
I don't know. MCM Runs a pretty similar set up but is very well tuned.
147rwkW (about 200rwhp) vs 180rwhp? I'd say maybe the MCM MX-5 would have been faster.
OMFG THE SOUND OF THE TURBO IS GORGEOUS!!!
Haggard garage needs to watch this video...
Yeh they uploaded a video installing a eBay radiator on Brendan's Miata
+Lloyd Griffiths are they turbo-ing it?
+Unknown Enemy same tho. Have you heard of B is For Build?
+Charlie Macris no Chris (ricer Miata) is turboing his and so is Marcus, rudniks sunscribed to car throttle
+Lloyd Griffiths but didn't they say in their turbo in boxing that it was for Alex's?
15:44 the key to success... DEEEJJAAAYYY KHHHHAALLLLLEDDD!!
Lol you turboed it before you got a LSD!? Whhhaatttt?
+Gingium what are you gonna do to yours?? MMWAHAHA I've found you again.
Well, it's what MCM did. And they didn't do a clutch in theirs for a while either.
Ayyye gingium, I didnt know you watched car throttle
At least he’s gonna make 700hp *caugh 500hp project Miata kidding love your vids
Can't wait to see how much power it makes. And that sound! That will surely be a fun car to drive even at low speeds.
just pretend this is an amusing comment that relates to the video

that t-shirt is wrong i think it is "miata is always the answer" so if you put all of the first letters of the words together it forms MIATA

GOOOOOOD DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYM Carthrottle! You said 11 GMT, it's like, 1:30 GMT
the amount of "that's what she said" opportunities in this video was sensational
I wondered why there was a turbo on Phil at that show! I thought I'd missed a detail of it being turbocharged somewhere, also really weird seeing all you CarThrottle guys irl.
Lol the miata guy. :P Can't blame him for answering Miata, it was on the shirt.
it was awesome man, really great work, your car is a beauty!

I'm looking at getting an MX5 in the near future as a track project and these videos have been great so far, Keep up the good work!
32 minute Project-MX-5 episode? Well my year is complete.
Some Plunker decided to heat wrap this thing.
Dude funniest thing I've heard this week
I have a 92 miata and plan on turbo charging it.Great video
if I owned an mx5 I would :
-Put in an adjustable suspension
-Advan A050 tires
-Engine stroker kit
-Individual throttle body
-Recaro Bucket Seats
-Rollcage

That Turbo sounds beautiful

I was in hysterics when he kept passing him tools, completely lost it at the shoe and pipe!
Has to be the best video CT has made. I'm a V8 guy, but this makes me want to get a 1st gen Miata and turbo it. Though I would keep my V8 car:D
That compressor surge! Lol, funny install. Your clutch is going to need some attention once you get that thing running well. Does the ECU have provisions for an electronic boost controller or wideband input? Seems a bit dangerous the way it sits right now.
I put a sierra cosworth yb with running gear.380 hp at the rear wheels.
when you maked the hole in the sump, the sump magnet retains the iron particles, or do you changed after the oil to clean the system from metallic dust particles?
I just saw Alex's instagram post that Ethan stayed up really late to finish this video, and I can see why! Awesome job Ethan
pro tip. put grease on the tap. all the shavings will get stuck in the grease, instead of falling in the oil pan.
