Yay! I'm really glad you gave Atelier another shot!
I also really liked Mana Khemia, and
I remember picking up Rorona for PS3 pretty cheap and GameStop back in the day and enjoying the aesthetic and designs and immediately getting overwhelmed with the time limit xD
It took me a while to try Atelier again, but I put some time into Sophie at the behest of a few friends last year and really enjoyed it! I grabbed the first Ryza game myself a little while ago and am really looking forward to it
I tried the Atelier games on the PS3 and had the exact same reaction as you, so I'm glad the series has improved.
I think personally that koei tecmo as a WHOLE really suffered at the end of the generation during the ps3, you have ninja gaiden 3 and yaiba which essentially killed the franchise (though razers edge fixed 3’s issues), the atelier series like you said, and warriors games weren’t getting the licensed deals yet…sped up to 2017 where we have nioh 1 coming out, gust releasing TONS of games like the nights of azure, and more atelier games that are actually good, and now omega force makes more licensed games than their own boring musou games. I’m glad to see that they made a pretty good turn around
The Atelier games on the PS3 were like the Atelier games that release before Atelier Iris. The three Iris games and the Mana Khemia Duo are the black sheep of the franchise.
Though on the flip side, they got lazy with localizations in general.
Glad you gave Atelier another shot. I think Ryza 2 and Sophie 2 are even better games than Ryza, and we have a new announcement on the horizon, so it's definitely a good time to catch up a bit!
Sophie 2 is soooooooooooo good. excellent story and characters.
Playing sophie 2 rn it's really good but the crafting is harder to me than ryza 1 and 2
Great review! I recently picked up both Ryza games, haven't had the chance to start them yet, but very much looking forward to it! 😁
Never played an Atelier game yet but your review definitely made me want to try this! One of the things I was iffy about the series was the time limit and that made me never really make it my priority to try this series. But knowing that that's now gone? Well it just shot up pretty high, probably after my new foray into the Ys & Trails series!
This was my first Atelier game and I got so lost in it. I didn't realize how addicting alchemy can be cause usually crafting is one of my least favorite parts in video games but this game somehow made it so fun. I also love the combat and the story was entertaining enough. I still need to play the sequel!
I really dislike the combat system particularly in the first game where you need to use the “-“ button frequently in combat is so fiddly. I think the Dusk Trilogy us my favourite along with the two Mana Khemia games. Great video David 🙂
once again david another great video. i never played any of the atelier game but they look like fun. but i will admit sometimes anime troupes can work well if done properly and i kinda crafting. but i still respect your straightforward prefrence to jrpgs and like you i kinda dont like time limits. but regardless thank you for another well informed video. and keep up the good work.
I would love to see another Atelier release focus on the appearance of the earlier games but that is a pipe dream for sure. Ryza is pretty fun and i can understand how anyone who played the PS2 games could feel such a way about the direction of the series. This one is light hearted, easier to play and overall this is more what I hope the devs do if they are not going to deliver us something more like Iris or Mana Khemia. Thanks David!
Thanks for this. I absolutely LOVE Mana-Khemia. I know it's different from Ryza, but I had a hard time getting into Ryza and dropped it after an hour or so (even bought the swimsuit for Lent to spur me on). After watching this, I think I'll give it another shot in the near future. (:
Thanks dude, I've been eyeing this one
Hello David! The only Atelier game I've played is first Atelier Iris on the PS2. I thought the alchemy system was fun. Reminded me of Star Ocean 2. But for some reason, I never played any other in the series. After watching this video, I am very curious about Ryza. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the game. I may have to give this one a go.
I rly enjoyed this game and Im enjoying Ryza 2 even more! Great video!
Great review! I loved Mana Khemia and have never played any of these games so maybe this will be my first introduction into the series. The fan service turned me off from trying them in the past.
If you like Ryza you will like Ryza 2 and Sophie 2 as well mostly likely. The other games since you dropped the series have less of the things you don't like so they might be worth checking out at some point if you are ever short on other games that interest you.
Did you play Atelier Sophie as well? I believe it is the other entry without a time limit. Checking out your video to decide if I want to play these!
Nice review! Not my thing by all acounts, but it sounds like an awesome game!
Ryza actually my first Atelier too and I'm completely love it! I didn't know that I'll be pretty much hooked on crafting in video games since I'd find it pretty tedious.
"Has the series changed for the better?"
"(Hunky redhead on the thumbnail)"
That's when I knew the answer would be "yes" lol
I had the exact same reaction to the Atelier games on the PS3 as you. I loved the Iris Trilogy and Mana Khemia on the PS2, but utterly loathed the time restraints of Atelier Rorona, and yet I still tried to give Totori a chance and just couldn't like it any further. I've heard from a few others that they changed things with Rhyza, so I may give it another chance after watching this, if I can find it deeply discounted.
lol I never even thought about switching my character in ryza
David, hopefully you see this. But there is a Kickstarter for two games combined into one Kickstarter. They are spiritual successors of Wild ARMS and Shadow Hearts. They are being designed by the same teams that worked on those games. The games are called Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood. It is already funded, but it is losing traction. There is 21 days left as of this post. I think if anyone can get the word out it would be you as well as some others. Please make a video talking about these games to help bolster more pledges to these. I'm not going to put a link here cause of potential auto removals of posts.
Hi there! I’ve actually made two videos about those and gotten a shoutout on their kickstarter page! I backed them myself too :)
@@davidvinc Well that is good to know. I just want to make sure that these games and kickstarter gets all the attention. So I am asking all the Pro JRPG channels to get the word out.
I need to get this, if it can run well on a potato Ryzen 3500u laptop. I'm buying camera gear, clothes, shoes, instruments instead of computer upgrades..
Ryza is very cute. xD
I’ve never played atelier but after seeing Lent… 🥵 I so want to play!
Atelier Ryza needed an eng dub as well not that time limit battle.
Bring back Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia!!!
Have never played any of these, but time limits would be a non-starter for me. Fuck that shit, I hate being rushed. The only time limits I want to see is escape sequences at the end of the game.
I like Ryza it's cool
I think since the dusk trilogy the time limits r gone or so long u would really have to waste time just doing nothing for hours in order to lose that way
I didn’t get very far in ryza because she wasn’t a ”magical girl” aesthetic and was really ugly to look at but from what I did play I did enjoy where the series was going.
Not gonna lie na voice acting can be kinda cringe. But I think this game has potential from watching this video. Gonna have to try it out.
Comment for the Chaos God of UA-cam Algorithm.
Thank you!! :)
I try to find you on Twitter, but I think you don't have one ? All that to say that the version 1.0 of the English Patch of PopoloCrois Story is out. 😁
Sorry, I don’t have twitter
@@davidvinc The correct decision.
Atelier Ryza was my first atelier game, same as david do I like to take my time with games, so I never played them because of the time limit. I liked 1 and 2 enough to platinum them, even if the story wasn't really to my liking. I'm just to old for the the teenagers beath the thing that an advanced civilization couldn't do.
Comment for the youtubes
Thank you so much!
just finish it thought it was great
I never was able to get into the series because of the weird sexualization of the girl characters. That’s why I was curious to hear your take on it. I may consider picking this up.
Lent hehehe
Ryza is where i dipped out, personally
It felt like the series had dropped its joseimuke roots entirely(atelier even had an otome game at one point, imo the best game in the series) and went for a different audiance, but that audiance isnt me, not a fan of the design changes or the storyline :/ glad some people are into it though, but for me i'm fine just playing the older games.
Atelier just like Tales underwent a much needed evolution and Ryza 2 and Sophie 2 just built upon it in my opinion. Glad to hear it reignited your interest in the series.
The best Atelier is still Iris
besides mana khemia iris is part of the mainline games what are you going on about old man
The game just looks way too fanservicey to me. All those camera angles in battle and cutscenes, and certain character designs (Ryza and that claw lady) tell me all I need to know about what its marketing strategy was. I'm not saying such design decisions are necessarily bad; just not for me. As an ace dude, I kinda get put off by all this sexualization. The fans latching onto the "eyyy! Ryza THICC" memes sure didn't help. Oh well. Hope people have fun, whatever their game preference is.
Fellow ace here (although I'm a lady ;)), and I SO have to agree! I love the fact that girls/women are at the forefront of the series, but it feels more like that's for the purpose of having 'waifus' to market to men and less for appealing to women. But I know not everyone sees it that way, and I do enjoy the general theme/story of Atelier Ryza for instance (don't enjoy the combat though lol), so it is what it is 😅
@@Anni_ka That's another great point! Thank you! Putting women at the forefront is great when care and thought are put into it. Aloy of Horizon is a good character (she has unlikeable traits, so I get if people disagree), but she wasn't designed as wank material for supposedly straight dudes. I'm getting similar vibes from Frey of Forspoken, though we have to wait and see if that game turns out well. I don't get that from these Atelier games.
@@tdblackboxx6866 I haven't played HZD yet, but I'm so happy to have someone like Aloy! And I'm looking forward to Forspoken too :D
My personal conundrum is that I love the art style of a lot of JRPGs (or just non-realistic art styles in general), but I've gotten tired of the not so uncommon fanservice. It just takes me out of a story so quickly. Like in Persona 5, I couldn't take the game seriously when it's trying to tackle the topic of sexual harassment while also sexualising one of the victims 🤦♀️
Your lost boomer
Oh yay I’m not alone with feeling this way! It’s definitely geared towards a more fanservicey eye. Ryza was a fun game, but man those camera angles really got annoying fast.
If time limits are your problem, pretty much every game since Atelier Meruru has had either no time limit or a time limit that is soooo lenient that it may as well be cosmetic. That said, as a big fan of the series that has played them all, Ryza is one of my least favorite games in the series. Kinda soulless, too easy, too short, the alchemy is practically optional compared to the other games ...
To those of us who love and have been with the series since the beginning: no. Sophie 2 is phenomenal, but that's because it's not a Ryza game. I can't say that I'm happy that the series is changing so much to appeal to a new audience and leaving behind the rest of us.
I definitely agree. Ryza 2 is better than 1, but neither of them even compare to the majority of the games in the series imo.
cant stand with these cute little girls ped0 games, i want to play as a baadass knight or warrior etc.
It is not
This is a hateful comment to the artists that put effort in their works
Be greatful
Rat
I don't like the atelier series anymore.
I played Escha and Logy, I loved the Mana Khemia series but now it just feels more fan servicing and there's no more English dub 😢
I hate to be that guy but...between Atelier Ryza and Yakuza Like A Dragon... don't you think it's a tad hypocritical to not like where the direction of Final Fantasy has been heading and the past 8 years while praising the two previously mentioned games? If you haven't been on GameFAQs, reset era, Steam Community or the Yakuza game subreddit from people who have playing that franchise since 2005 it is a very common opinion that people who only started with Yakuza like a dragon completely destroyed the franchise.
Likewise the Atelier community isn't exactly loving of the games in the series you liked.
I understand what you’re saying I really do, but I’m allowed to like what I like, and dislike what I dislike. And as this channel centers around my personal opinion, I feel like Yakuza and Atelier have changed for the better, while Final fantasy has changed for the worse
Hey David, love your videos so much. I had a question for you since it feels like you've played every JRPG under the sun. How many times have you gotten hardstuck and needed a guide or someone's help? I can't imagine someone even as seasoned as you can get through everything so smoothly. Some of these games are confusing as heck 🥲
Oh more times than I can count, especially when I was younger and the internet didn’t exist. But I always try to figure it out on my own and only use a guide as a last resort.
