- Is Atelier Ryza Any Good Though? - Atelier Ryza is the first Atelier game I've played. I've wanted to dive into this series for a while, and finally got the chance to do so! With a fresh perspective, I felt like giving my opinion on how it does as a first Atelier game for newcomers!
The Atelier series as of today has over 20 games within it's franchise. A unique take on JRPGs, Atelier in most cases separates itself from other JRPG series with a compelling crafting system and a pleasing art style.
With Atelier Ryza releasing in 2019, I have wanted to try out this series for a while, and with backlog permitting, I was finally able to do so. Atelier Ryza is my first Atelier game, and as such my opinion on it is born off a completely blank state. So if you have the pressing questions 'where to start in Atelier', 'What Atelier game should I play first' or 'Should I start with Atelier Ryza?'; I hope to answer those questions through this video.
So let's have a look at Gust's latest entry, and see if we can answer the question:

This is the start of a new series where I play other titles outside of Falcom games. Don't worry, my main content is still gonna be that!
But since this is a JRPG channel, and I want to experience other companies' work, I felt I should dedicate some time to doing so.
So the first game that get's said treatment will be Atelier Ryza which I recently just finished. I had a pleasant experience with this one, and I hope that comes through in the video!

You should try the trilogy atelier ayesha, escha & logy and shallie. My favourites of this franchise.

I hear there are like 20 other games in the series. I wanted to play the Dusk trilogy first, but I'll take any suggestion, and just add it to my neverending list.

As someone who has played 11 Atelier titles so far, I would have to pretty much agree with every point you make. Atelier Ryza felt like a title that was designed to hook new players into the Atelier series by mixing up the Atelier formula enough to appeal to a new audience but familiar enough to veterans to still enjoy.
The Arland series (Rorona, Totari, Meruru, and then Lulua) is arguably the best series but with the exception of Lulua their time limits can turn off a lot a players. I myself started out with the Mysterious series (Sophie, Firis, Lyde and Suelle) as only Firis had a time limit (Very forgiving and only for the first half of the game) and they really got me into the series as a whole and made me grow to love it for what it is, a cutesy JRPG with an engaging item creation system that causes me to lose sleep as i try to make the best items possible.
If you're interested in exploring the series further I would recommend working your way through the Mysterious series first, they may not be the best games in the franchise but, if you're like me and like to spend time making stuff and exploring these ones let you do it. Then when you want more of a challenge move onto the Arland games as they are IMO the best in the franchise thus far overall but make you do proper time management to get everything done in one play through.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was gonna play the Dusk trilogy first, but based on this suggestion, I'll go for the Mysterious series first and see how it goes. If it's anything like Ryza, I'm sure I'll enjoy them, especially if the time mechanic isn't too strenuous.
@@TheKisekiNut The Dusk series definitely is pretty good, and its time limits are easier than the Arland series, but if you're like me and enjoy getting the "Perfect" item then the mysterious series is a good jumping off point.
For transparencies sake two of my favorite games are in the Alrand series, but i would recommend doing Mysterious > Dusk > Arland as each series gets stricter with the time limits.
I am also a "starter" in the Atelier series, and I think your advise is sound. I personally don't like time constraints very much, because I want to take my time to explore things. That's the reason I decided to make Atelier Sophie - The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book my first Atelier game. I will certainly play the other games (starting with the rest of the "Mysterious" series). I guess when I grown used to the mechanics in the games, that time constraint won't hurt me that much.
Anyway - I got in all that JRPG stuff thanks to those guy's at Falcom. I also consider playing games like Blue Reflection, Omega Quintet, Conception 2 and Conception PLUS, Dark Rose Valkyrie, Dragon Star Varnir and Fairy Fencer F (to name a few). One thing is for sure - There is no way I go out of games for the foreseeable future... ;-).
I honestly started tearing up toward the end because I hate that some people hate Ryza's story but thats the thing- It's not meant to be some crazy THERES A WAR AND WE NEED TO TAKE DOWN SOME GOD kind of story. It was refreshing to see somethin that was just a group of friends dicking around and having fun.
I'm playing Ryza 2 at the moment, and it has an uncanny knack of cheering me up even after a bad day.
Its not even about that tho. It dose not even have to be big or dramatic but there has to be somthing to pay off in the end. Plus the end enemy of Klint kingdom was obiously just tacked on.
That sounds like a really wholesome time to be honest.

I had the complete opposite experience lol, I had never played an Atelier game and this game got me hooked harder than cocaine, I finished it 100% in 4 days and then I replayed it, have to say that I'm a huge crafting and gathering maniac on every single game I play, so I was hooked from the start, the charming calm passing, the simple yet intricate and expansive crafting system, fast passed combat, it was a hit to me, to me the biggest downfall was worldbuilding, there's a lot about Kurken and the mainland, but there's nothing and I mean nothing about the outside world, hints about people being from the capital and other cities but that's all, trough the entire game I had this very weird sensation "So, there's traveling merchants and trade routes, but where's the other cities" at the end the game tells you what the party is planning to do in the future, but I don't know, A world map, a bit of international politics would have made this have an absolute 10 for me
I actually like that the npcs become like ghosts because they hinder my exploration on towns.
just ordered this game yesterday as a huge rpg fan ive never played any atelier game in the franchise but this caught my attention as i saw trailers etc and i was hooked i cant wait to dive into this game also huge shout out to you for mentioning a rpg game i love eternal sonata i know theres 3 atelier ryza games in the series this point so it made sense for me to order the first 1 to play them in order awesome job i subscribed keep it up
As my first jrpg I've ever played all the way back in 2011, Trails have set my expectations too high in regards to storytelling, soundtrack, world-building, and character development. Played other games like octopath travelers but I got really bored with the story and side-quests even though the music is awesome. Just want to say thank you for the video. Interesting to look at other jrpgs under the lens of a kiseki fan, so I can lower my expectations accordingly XD.
Thanks for taking the time to watch it man! I agree, I very much doubt I'll find another JRPG which can trump Trails in world-building. That's not saying I can't enjoy another series though, it just needs to offer something else that I find compelling, and Ryza definitely met that criteria.

I've been wanting to play these games too and I think this might have been the push that I needed, I'll have to check them out real soon and see what I think about it as well. The scenery looks pretty good and the graphics are kind of what i'd expect already. In fact, it looks similar to Bravely Default and on that note I can hardly wait Bravely Default II to come out!! Have you ever played the Bravely Default series?

I wasn't sure wether or not I wanted to get into the Atelier series with this one... Realized physical copies for the switch are pretty scarce specially in NZ, your video triggered me and oh lucky me, the nintendo eshop has it on sale. Insta buy after watching your video. I would like to see a Musou/Dynasty Warriors game based on the Atelier Series, it would seem weird, but i think it would work well, also the same style but on all Falcom games characters.
Recently became a fan of your channel due to my love for Trails. This was a fantastic review and very enjoyable to watch. Might give the Atelier series a shot someday, even though the boobage and other overt fanservice-y stuff are big turn-offs for me.

I've only played iris and mana khemia 1 and 2, tried shopie, and I'm surprised that the series was actually meant to be a light-hearted series and not story focused like the 3 atelier iris game and 2 mana khemia games. I kind of want to try ryza but I'm not actually sure, do you guys have any recommendation on what atelier i should play ? if there's one that is leaning on the story part
60 bucks on steam. That's a really, really high price for something that doesn't look like an AAA title.
Whether it's worth it or not is in the eye of the beholder. I'd say 30 hours of fun for £50 is still a good deal.

I got this on sale for 40 bucks and spend 70 hours to finish it. I like the play style but the story is kinda bland but still fun.
I really wanna buy Ryza, but I guess I'll wait for the DX version.

This was my least favorite Atelier 🥲 but I didn't dislike it.
I think I am just very used to the classic Atelier games so I was a little surprised by so many changes.
What I find fascinating about the Atelier series is that it sounds boring as hell, and yet, when you play it, it's so surprisingly fun an addictive. It's hard to recommend, but at the same time you can't help but recommend it anyway lol

How it currently is developed? No. Not at all. Maybe as a crafting aspect of an mmorpg? You don't really go very far in ryza, it's on purpose no doubt but in MMOs exploration is pretty big

As some one who has played 7 of the games I can tell you that my main reason for playing them is simply that I want to see cute characters do cute things.
But my advice for you if you plan on playing some of the older games is that if you want to do all/most of the side quests and get the true endings just use a 100% walk through guide. The time restraints in these games can be brutal
It's why I started with Ryza! I initially was going to start with Arland, but a lot of fans of the series told me not to start there because of the time limit as you said. Time constraints aren't really my thing if it's ala FF13-3, so a walkthrough would be best if I dove in to those!

When I played Atelier Rorona for the first time, it took me half of the playthrough to realise that "traits" and "effects" are a thing. Before, I had just mixed stuff together and it miraculously worked. Then the item requirements for a quest were so specific, that I suddenly realised: "Wait, there is more?"
I got through most of Firis without realising this too. Was my first Atelier game though...
That happened with me while playing Atelier Sophie. I got to the last boss and thought that the boss was incredible hard. I had basically no traits. After many months I cleared the game on easy. After trying Firis I realized the traits, played Sophie again and destroyed the boss on hard (since traits can be really overpowering).
I have personally described this game as a "slice of life" JRPG. You arent out to save the world or go on a grand quest to beat the greatest monster, you are expected to live and play in the life of someone else. Is it perfect "No" but is it fun "OMG yes" I love the characters and the world, that I want to see more of. Cant wait for the second game to release!

It's still a little baffling to me when I see people come into Atelier's latest game with no prior experience. Not in a bad way, of course. I think it's great more people are coming to the series (can you believe it's been going on for 20+ games?)
Ryza was really fun, I had a really fun time with it. Escha & Logy is still my favorite by far, but I see good things in the future of Atelier. :)
It's a series I've wanted to try for a while, Ryza just seemed like a great place to get started. And of course the new one is on it's way as well soon, at least in Japan!
The first and second game are on playstation for 30 euros at the moment and i never heard of these games. Is it really worthit?
@@kingdomsoul8968 Absolutely worth it if you're into crafting and gathering. It's a more chill story, a lot of character bonding and just taking things at your own pace. If you wanted a more chill experience it's definitely worth checking out.

I played all atelier post ps2 era and i can say without doubt this is the worst atelier in moder era , BUT its a great JRPG , as atelier game this is bad , few event , few character interaction , few funny escenes and even many escenes without voice , atelier always have 100% voices at least in japanese every dialogue had voice .
But ryza is probably the best JRPG gust made it , is great the atmosphere the ost and the battle system is great , but the alchemy system is boring because is prety easy obtain broken items , in the past game obtain a great item is more hard , but well i think is a good game i dont recomend for first atelier to newcommer , i recomend Sophie or Rorona , Ayesha is great option
I play Trails for the plot and overaching plot and i play Atelier for its Cute asthetic (and comfy feel) and mechanics would also reccomend Rorona or the mysterious arc if u want more while waiting for next in secret arc

Lent wanted to get stronger because he would get beat by his dad and wanted to show his dad that he will leave this place and become a knight. They never really felt one dimensional to me. Even bos grew up and is helping Tao out.
Yes! It is good, loved everything about the game even the minor default or bug. One thing though, expenseive DLC but Gust is known for this so not really a problem. Can’t wait for the sequel :)

I remembered playing atelier iris and mana khemia series in the PS2 era. They are such an wholesome game for story and the graphic sprite reminiscing me to the trails in the sky games. I am getting more and more less interested to the franchise when they are heading towards the cute asthetic. Hopefully i can give them a chance again in the near future

This was my first game in the series too, I played on the switch and it was smooth enough. I found the characters likeable but the story was very slow, it's a very chill game for the first 80%. Great if you need a chilling time to unwind from stress. Didn't enjoy the combat system much though.
Synthesis system was awesome.
Story didn't really hit home for me, but it was a nice change of pace. I'm basically served on the story front by Trails, so it's good to have something like Atelier that offers something different.
@@TheKisekiNut i played sophie in january and yeah, the story feels like monkeys typing into keyboard randomly compared to trails, even ys games. The gameplay is great tho.
@@garchomowner I tried to look at this game without relying too much on using Trails as a backdrop. I feel pretty much any JRPG is gonna come short in story when compared with the world of Zemuria!
The Atelier series has always been a more laid back rpg game that's all about the slice of life stories. I'm in the same boat as a long time fan about not liking the new battle system.
The story feels rushed sometimes, and as you said the pacing can be all over the place too.
I feel like Klaudia was the only character with real depth or development throughout. Lent stands up for himself when it comes to his dad, but that's about it.
That being said I very much love the cast, world, combat, gathering and alchemy systems! Hoping the sequel can do what this game couldn't!
It's a nice change of pace to other JRPG's. No other JRPG has made me feel this relaxed in a long time. I felt I could just play at my own pace, and enjoy the awesome ride. Can't wait for that second game!
I do want to play this game among others (FF7, P5R, Ys Memories of Celceta, etc.), but I've been saving money for Trails of Cold Steel 4 all this time since Cold Steel 3 was released. So I won't be able to get any of the others that I want to get in the near future. Probably next year, or when there's a good sale going on. But I heard that the Atelier series doesn't usually go on a huge sale. Probably only a few bucks off, but that's usually it.

Tried to like this game, but the action battle system is just so annoying and is a dealbreaker for me. If only there was an option to switch it to turn based as it always have been.
I like the atelier series but didn't care for Ryza. My complaints are the new alchemy system is a step back from Lulua. Also I really don't like it's final fantasy 13 style battle system, I thought Lulua had one of the best atelier battle systems. I just prefure turn based over an active battle system.
That's fair. I personally don't mind turn based or real time; gameplay isn't really a dealbreaker for me in most cases as long as the game does something else well. I don't think it was like FF13's battle system though, that system was literally brain dead button mashing, and I still maintain that thought after playing it again less than a year a go. I felt far more engaged with Ryza's system, it gave a lot of choices but kept the pressure up with the real time element.
@@Coffee4Baby I gave up on the game as well, not sure how far I got onto the game. It's a shame that the battle system really killed it for me cause I like the atelier games but I will be skipping Ryza 2. Oddly enough I was liking the characters in Ryza either, I found them to be pretty bland and unlikable. The more I think about it the more stuff I remember I didn't like about the game.
I'm also coming into this game having just jumped into the amazing world of Legends of Heroes. I have a LONG way to go in that series but it didn't stop me from purchasing Atelier Ryza 1 and 2 thanks to the current game sale in the Playstation Store. I'm very much looking forward to giving it a shot as it's a gorgeous game and looks to be a lot of fun.
i don't regret buying this game,i thought this is the first atelier game i played til i realized mana khemia was part of the atelier games which i played first back in 2015 and this the game that got me hooked into atelier games,then i went for arland series after finishing this one.
Bought for the thighs, stayed for the actual gameplay, story, and wonderful ost.
Personally i love ayesha a lot more than ryza but ryza is really REALLY GOOD so pls you need to play the atelier seried
Don’t think like the conclusion of the video matched the rest of it… Main story sucks, side quests suck, characters suck, there are invisible walls everywhere, but in exchange you can work another full time job?

It's a very good introduction to the series. A lot of charm.
I got the game and I’m unable to get into it. I love the look and art style of the game but the main gameplay loop has me bored. I honestly feel bad because I really like the cartoony cutesy aesthetic and I like the actual combat but the gameplay outside that I find boring.
No doubt this game isn't for everyone. It's all tied to the alchemy, if you can't get in to it, you're most likely not gonna enjoy any main title Atelier game. That's why I was surprised that I enjoyed it, normally I'm not in to that kind of stuff.
There's so many of these on switch and I want to try one but I really don't know where to start.
For this particular one. Leveling takes a backseat. You need to research about the equipment and attack Ireland. You can't just overlevel and spam items .
Great review. I might buy atelier ryza for the Nintendo switch later on. Haven't really played the ones on the PS3 yet and I remember playing the atelier games for the ps2 back when I was younger and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully I'll buy this and the other atelier games for the Nintendo switch. It really looks cool and relaxing to start with.😃😊
I really think you'll like it! From what I hear (I can't speak from experience since I haven't played the previous games) it strays a bit from the other entries, but it was a brilliant experience for a new comer like myself, and that mostly stemmed from the alchemy system.
The Kiseki Nut okay thanks 😊 It just looks so relaxing and interesting too. I'm also thinking about buying atelier lulua and lydie and suelle for the Nintendo switch too.

I’m new to the series and this is my first game and I’m not really enjoying it. I don’t really like sub and I don’t find the characters very interesting, tutorials aren’t very good and the alchemy system doesn’t intrigue me enough.
Funnily enough, you do get a recipe book after you complete a questline that basically caps off all the other questlines in the game.

I've enjoyed the Atelier games to an extent. Always has a cute cast of characters and usually 40+ hours of gameplay. All in all I own own 10 of the games from the series, but I've only played Atelier Escha & Logy Plus, and Atelier Sophie to the end. Some of them like Escha & Logy have multiple endings, so there is some relay value if you don't save in specific areas. The only real issue I have with them is the difficulty spikes with some of the optional bosses for trophies. Other than that, I kind of want to start Atelier Shallie back up again.
I have to agree, the DLC for this was brutal, and I got stomped by the main story end boss a few times which forced me to learn more about the synthesis mechanic, but that's no issue, it's forcing me to learn which I enjoy. It's nice that you have to make use of a mechanic rather than grind levels in the traditional way.
Sorry, but this game was a major disappointment to me. The whole trying to find the right things in order to synthesise WAS a chore to me and slowed the story down to a crawl. In addition, as I’m not a fan of quest based JRPGs, the lacking story as you put it, is the most disappointing. Pacing is totally lacking which isn’t helped by the whole gathering and side quests, which is the core problem for me. The poor story.
Atelier games usually aren't story focused. It's more crafting and quest focused.
I want to play this game on ps5 but its FULL PRICE and out of stock physical in my region even when Ryza 2 is out lool
That's madness that it's actually sold out! Very surprising. I'd still recommend it though despite the price, and Ryza 2 is nearly here in Europe (mine's on it's way as we speak).
I've never played an Atelier game before. I'm at that point in my life where devoting such time to a game is impractical at best. As someone who devoted YEARS of my life to games, however, I would like to say a few things about this game that bring happiness to my heart when I watch reviews.
The characters seem beautiful without being objects. It might be the art style or the intended audience, but many of the characters are adorable rather than sexual. It gives a player time to value the game cerebrally and emotionally, to invest in the protection and progression of the team while actually wanting each character to grow and continue on their quest. Nothing wrong with sexualized characters, don't get me wrong, but it's nice to see a female protagonist that is just enjoying an adventure and not looking like her final stop will be a brothel. It's refreshing. Maybe I'm just remembering the wrong JRPGs though.
The maps seem content-dense. Play Fallout, Metro, Saints Row, or practically any open world game and you will see vast tracts of land everywhere that are used for nothing more than traversal. From the reviews, I don't see that in the Atelier games - there are always things to collect or interact with or explore. Enemies don't seem to harass you from halfway across the map, there are several ways to deal with most issues, and items respawn. Referring back to the later Saints Row titles, there were objects and collectibles around that could be collected to empower your character. Once those collectibles were...collected?...they were gone forever. The game world became more and more bleak, one more touch of vibrancy gone forever. Atelier doesn't follow that model from what I can see, and I like that.
The price for failure is low, but there is still a price. Still, that price is not so high as to make experimentation something to fear. That is a difficult balance to find and hold, but it seems like the makers of this game did so. Well done. As a hoarder in most RPG games, I'm slightly leery of the quality system and how things just...don't seem to stack as materials. Personal pet peeve, not a deal breaker, but seeing several dozen of a single resource cluttering my inventory...I was a dedicated Skyrim player for a while as a thief. Due to bugs and glitches and some very potent enchantments, I had boots that increased my carrying capacity by tens of thousands. I would still find myself over-encumbered during menial trips across the land. Many of those items stacked. If the items in Atelier don't...I'll have a LOT of scrolling to do.
These are a few things I noticed. Please, everyone, know that this is my impression on a game I have never played. I literally don't have dozens of hours to play a game anymore. I'm casual at best, but this is definitely the type of game that would make me smile if I lost my job because at least I could play it for a while between bouts of job hunting. If your life is not so hectic, if your days are not so busy, and you like a game that feels innocent and fun, I've heard little more than praise for this game and other games in its series.

I don't usually watch game reviews anymore but I found your takes to be very close to my experience with the game. I finished the game with around 68 hours, most of which were spent in the atelier. It's amazing how they took a system that's usually terrible and overlooked in other games (crafting) and made it the focus of the game and managed to make it SO FUN. Looking forward to Ryza 2 and seriously considering playing the older games in the series but I'm not entirely sure where to start.
I'm also buzzing for the second game, I love continuity and it looks like they're doing that with Ryza. The additions look promising, and the combat seems a bit more refined as well.
@@TheKisekiNut Combat did feel a bit lacking. So I'm excited to see what they brought into the table with the sequel. I have no complaint about anything else in the first game to be honest. As long as everything stays the same, maybe some QoL, I'll be happy.
I bought this game on a whim several months ago, yet to play it actually due to backlog....I may have to rearrange what I am playing.
It's a good game man, well worth the playthrough, and relatively short too!

played this game the week it was released, all i could say is this game is made for girls 😂😂😂 not that there's something wrong with the game itself, it's good. i mean, character build is good, graphix is good, story is good....
just not my cup of tea... haha, i stopped after playing for 10 hrs....

OMG, the character designs are dreadful. I had to stop watching and sadly, prolly will never play it now because of that. Glad to hear you really like the game tho.
