@davidvinc Nice! Looking forward to it. My personal fave for the year was Romancing Saga 2, btw. Which is no small wonder considering all the great stuff that came out in 2024, and given the fact that the last SaGa title I enjoyed was FFL3.
@@quickpawmaud yeah, I just started Eiyuden, and it's the most middle-of-the-road recent title I've played since Monochrome Mobius. I'm really enjoying the story, but other aspects have drug it down a bit for me.
I have bought it since day one and I'm 92 hours in. It's still my first playthrough and I haven't finished it yet because of real life. Not ideal, because I could only play during the weekends, so some of the passion and hype have died, but I'm still having a blast during the little windows I have to play.
My husband LOVES that Slime anime and manga, and I was thinking of getting it for him as his Christmas gift. That... looks... absolutely terrible. Yuck. That would disappoint him bigtime. :( And I wanted Farmagia, too!!! Thanks, David, for your honesty about these good and bad games. You saved us both some heartache.
Sky Oceans hurts the most, because I was genuinely looking forward to it. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm glad I didn't buy it. Maybe one day, the real Skies of Arcadia can get a remaster, or at least a re-release.
@Slappaccino So glad you gave them a shot. I was sold when Stories 1 was announced because I fell off Pokemon and it was everything I wanted from the genre.
Talking about bad games is not only entertaining, but helps with things like keeping wishlists trimmed down. It can be a shame to see missed potential, but at the end of the day, these games are competing not only with releases this year, but previous years, for our time.
True, it's nice when whoever is giving feedback is clearly saying why they don't like it. For instance if someone doesn't like farming games or VNs being negative isn't a deterrent with someone who likes them
I just finished DQ3 last night. Really enjoyed it, definitely one of the best of the year. Did have to take a break before getting into the post-game simply because the grind is a bit much. Wish they would've added Metal King Slimes in this remake.

Metaphor is my rpg of the year while Final fantasy 7 Rebirth is rpg of the decade. Fully prepared for the third part to not live up to the expectations they’ve set with Rebirth.

Great video! I wish SMTVV got more love from the jrpg sphere online. It genuinely is one of my favorite rpgs already and probably my second favorite atlus jrpg behind nocturne.
I totally relate to how you feel about Persona, so it kinda makes me wanna try Metaphor. Still I wish Atlus could make a new IP that is not just another Persona with a new coat of paint.
Great list David. I pretty much all of these RPGs on my list. And companies really need to learn to STOP making cheap, half-assed games like Farmagia & Reincarnated Slime just because they're licensed. Also, I have to give you props for those great segways for each entry.
Experiencing 2024’s JRPGs vicariously through your channel (for now). 🥳👍🏻 The animations in TLoH mobile game are sinful. No one in their right mind can think those look good.
As someone who 100%ed Reynatis... I honestly didn't hate it. I wouldn't recommend it either, but it wasn't the worst game I played this year (that dubious honor goes to Stormgate). A lower price and a bit more polish would have helped a lot though. Half the cast is just not fun to use, due to the wonky targeting on some moves and jank attack animations. And since people are listing their Top RPGs for this year, my top 8 would probably be: 1. SMTV: V 2. Unicorn Overlord 3. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth 4. Romancing Saga 2 Remake 5. Trails through Daybreak 6. Ys 10 7. Persona 3 Reload 8. Metaphor Have yet to play DQ3 and I'm hopeful for Fantasian.
Playing through Dragon Quest III at the moment at a snails pace. Just enjoying every moment and taking my time. I’m at Ibis currently and prepping to head for the pyramid. Definitely my game of the year. Looking to tackle unicorn overlord at some point as well, though a little hesitant because I’m not too good with strategy games. Getting ready for Fantasias release in December and looking forward to 2 specific games in 2025: Ys memoirs in felghana and Xenoblade X.
In addition, Palworld is definitely one of the best games released this year. It's in early access, so I guess it doesn't count, but after 200 hours in this thing, I can say for sure it was one of my favourite games this year. It's hard to pin point a genre for it - it's open world, rpg, and survival all meshed into one. Really addicting game though.
I also recommend Dread Delusion if you're looking for something weird that plays kind of like The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. If you want something turn-based that plays like a classic CRPG, try out Skald: Against The Black Priory.
Trails Through Daybreak was amazing. On my "rushed" second playthrough. Even fast forwarding everything and not talking to any NPCs this is taking forever lol. I just wanted to finish up getting a few things like max bonds before moving onto Daybreak II next year in case it mattered. Eiyuden Chronicle was really good too. I enjoyed my time with it but it could've been better in areas. I still have to play the DLC too. Is that even out yet? Didn't play anything else from this year though. I procrastinate too much. And I've been playing older games too. Blossom Tales, Final Fantasy VI...again, Nexomon 1 and 2, Fire Emblem Engage, Trails into Reverie, Cold Steel IV I think. I haven't even purchased Ys X yet which is kinda sad. That probably should be up there for top game this year as well. I'm not sure what's next to play. Front Mission 2, DQIII again, One Piece, Wargroove 1 and 2, Empire of Angels IV, Legend of Nayuta, Super Mario RPG again, Super Robot Wars 30 Star Ocean 2 again or something I've had for longer that's still sitting in the backlog. And again, Persona can yeet itself out of being a pillar for Atlus. Growlanser and Devil Survivor needs to come back instead. I haven't played Metaphor though as it's not on Switch. From what I seen it almost looks like a one off game like Radiant Historia. I mean, not everything needs to be a series.
I wish Atlus would just give us the damn Raidou games on modern consoles. Or Strange Journey Redux and the original Soul Hackers. Or the DDS duology. Hell even just SMT1 and 2 at this point. I can't be bothered with these 100+ hour long slice of life rpgs like Persona anymore. I'm so tired of going to fake school and/or being on a timer.
Been playing Dragon Quest 3 remake game a lot and been restarting/making new files a lot as well. Becoming almost a chore, even though I am getting close to a possibly great party based on different guides including yours. Finally found a guide on how to get the best or close to best personalities for different classes besides Hero, making that class female is most recommended and getting lone wolf is still pretty good, until you get the Gander for Vamp. At least the old guides for personality test still work. As for the other starting classes, thinking of once again starting with Merchant, but then change it to Gadabout so at least it is not totally useless and have some skills up to level 20. Maybe the Stone Throw can have some use with a Gadabout, if they decide to use it on weakened monsters. At least you can still dig for money and items and service call. After most likely lv. 40 something, make her a Sage. Not sure of the other two. Do want one of the party members becoming a thief to have Padfoot once I most likely change a Monster Wrangler to the other Sage, maybe a Priest. Was going to do a Mage to Warrior, but sort of pointless since you can get the Jennies and Mush once money comes in for befriending monsters, just need Padfoot from the Thief since Holy Water does not work. The last one, maybe a Monster Wrangler, or some other decent/good starting class before becoming that class. The downside, it will make it much harder to befriend monsters while lacking the tools to do it. Also, regardless of what I do, I could go the Martial artist route to get hard twice. But then, I have to find another part member to make into a Sage. Changing a Priest to eventually a sage seems pointless and starting with a 3rd utility party with Thief could have a weaker starting party until I make him to a sage. At least I am keeping a file that I am pretty far on, so I can go back to it to finish the game with it and I did pretty well with it.
Not all mobile games and games based on anime are horrible. Just... most of them. You're right, it's really hard to find a good gem among the trash! I think I remember you liked Monochrome Mobius, which is from a LN/anime.
I probably played more backlog this year than new release. Of the new ones I played, Dragons Dogma 2 takes the cake. I need to take more time off work. Have you played Final Fantasy Dimensions? With your disdain for mobile games, I'm curious about your thoughts. I played a small bit but mobile games are tough to get into. That's a game I might want the HD2d treatment for.
Thank goodness Brothership wasn't on the bad list as it's not bad, dear got it's not Recarnated Slime bad, or BiSDX levels. It is a flawed experience, but for be a new entry after a 9 year gap, I'm chuffed to bits
My personal best RPGs this year have to be: Metaphor, Unicorn Overlord, SMTVV, Saga 2 Remake, Visions of Mana. Good: Farmagia and Persona 3 Remake. Bad: Reynatis and Rebirth. Ugly: DQ3HDR. Anticipating Fantasian and Fairy Tail 2!
Reincarnated as a Slime is one that makes me sad to see it came out so bland, it apparently had Tales staff on board and combat wise is the closest thing I've seen to a traditional Tales game in a long time
would honestly put Rebirth in my bad games list this year :X I don't play nearly as many games as you do but it was my least favorite of the year. tedious as hell and completely cowardly ending that I think ruined a lot of the potential this new story was telling
Let's see... the only one of the "worsts" I even tried was the demo for Sky Oceans, and I removed that from my Steam library before finishing what was available in the demo (I'm not sure I even got through a full hour). I pre-ordered FF7rb and Visions of Mana, and beat them already (although I haven't gone back to platinum/100% them). I recently snagged DQ3HD2D, but haven't played very far in it yet (btw, I'm avoiding your advice videos about this game for now, because I'd rather try to figure things out on my own first). Metaphor: ReFantazio is on my wishlist, and I'm hoping my family will buy me a copy for Christmas. I think I'll skip Unicorn Overlord though, since I'm not into strategy rpgs.
Wow what a great list bro! 3 of 5 are on my top 5 as well. Stellar Blade was a game I had high hopes for and surpassed expectations. It probably would be my number 1 if not for Rebirth. FF7 simp since 1997. Keep up the great videos man!
I haven't had a chance to really play a lot of these games, but the game this year that has been 50/50 for me has been Eyuden Chronicles:100 heroes. It has some great moments, but ultimately it suffers from some of that First Game stuff like Suikoden 1 did. Hopefully if they make a 2nd installment for the franchise they can make the overworld map bigger, or at least make it feel bigger.
As a huuuuge Atlus fan since the early 90s, by the end of Metaphor, I was a little disappointed for a few reasons. Still an excellent game and has the bones to be a really great series.
Yakuza like a Dragon Infinite wealth, SMT5V, Unicorn Overlord, FF7, GS Nightmare Feast P.s. don't have Metaphor or hd2d DQ3 but everyone praises them so need to check out Metaphor
My favourite JRPGs this year: 1. Ys X: Nordics 2. Visions of Mana 3. Unicorn Overlord Eiyuden Chronicle: I wanted it to be amazing, but the game felt lackluster. Maybe the era for 100+ characters is done; I honestly had recruits I never used and the siege battles felt less like an engaging strategy mini game and more of luck/read the walkthrough to win. EC wasn't a bad game, but I suppose, I expected too much. Metaphor: I played the demo and got bored; felt tedious rather than entertaining. Needless to say, I didn't download the game. Truthfully, I feel that way looking at Persona/SMT games, which is why I ignored them. I am happy for Metaphor's success -- a win for JRPGs is always welcome; the game plus SaGa, Soulsbourne, and Dragon Quest are just not for me. Reynatis: I would rather play Metaphor. Rebirth: waiting for PC release. Special mention: Stellar Blade. Yes, it's not a JRPG, but damn, EVE is hot and awesome and I want Stellar Blade 2!!!!!
The only thing i hated about Unicorn Overlord wasn't even anything in the game itself, it was a great experience to go through, but rather how the whole thing was sold to players especially by UA-camrs... One of the things i heard CONSTANTLY was that it was "Fire Emblem but BETTER!", which was absolutely not what the game was, and i felt like it did it a great disservice to compare the two franchises. Because Unicorn Overlord shares basicly no mechanical ideas or mechanics with Fire Emblem, so since i knew nothing of the game, but love Fire Emblem, i went in expecting just that, and BOY was i disappointed when it played nothing like Fire Emblem. It took me like half my playthrough to rewire my brain away from the comparison, and only then did the game really start to get good!
I recently got a lot of great RPGs this year including many on your list. But of course I couldn't get by with out at least one dud. That being Sky Oceans. A shame since I really wanted to like that game.
Last comment went way off topic and long. This comment for anyone. Does anyone think I can do pretty well with a starting party with 3 "utility" classes: Merchant, Thief and Monster Wrangler, or is it a bad idea and have at least a Priest?
After I played the pretty good Ys X: Nordics, I went back retro to fan translation land and started playing games from the Herakles no Eikou series. I'm on Herakles no Eikou Snap Story for Gameboy. This game is abysmal for having awful stat balancing and terrible RNG where one bad turn gets you killed. Couple it with high encounter rate and difficulty being able to run away from battle, and what you have is an absolute disaster. Yet, because i'm a complete fool, I want to finish it.
@brentwalker5726 I'd also recommend Switch. I personally got it for the PS5 just because I use that console more often, but the performance and presentation is just as good on the Switch as it's not a very demanding game, and the extra portability is always a good thing.
I love how your last pick for bad games was an anime based game when you praised Goblin Slayer, an anime based game. 😆 But I get it. Not all games are created equal.
I love Metaphor, but I honestly still think P5 is better. I didn't like that new Archetypes were tied to Follower ranks, it made me feel pressured to focus on the Followers that give the upgraded Archetypes I want, instead of the ones whose stories I liked.
Im currently playing through visons of mana. I loved the first half of the game, but after chapter 6 all the padded side quest after every town main story quest and every chapter is honestly just as bad as star ocean: integrity and faithlessness. Its feeling like a forced chore. I still love the graphics artwork and main story, but the game is becoming a chore. Im really starting to not enjoy it.
@davidvinc yea but they have some of items that unlock the teir 3 class abilities for the characters so I finish them all from this chapter across the map I probably will stop doing them. It's counter immersive to do everything is not fun at all. But would be nice to be able to use more of the class skills and abilities per character.
FF7 Rebirth suffers from a similar problem, except it extends through the majority of the game. Sure, you can skip most of the minigames, but you're also missing out on most of the best treasure. It's offputting that you get better treasure from doing non-heroic things than you do running actual quests and exploring the world. Cloud and company deserved better.
Perhaps not the best thing for the algorithm, but I''d like to see a video for "5 games in 2024 that were just okay".
I'm working on an "underrated gems" video - that should fit the bill (and more algorithm friendly)

It's a mobile game so it's basically a given it's gonna suck lol.
@@AlastorShadow0 And because it's mobile, we can feel justified in decanonizing it. Make a real game or go home.
It did remind me I need to start that series
Not all mobile games and games based on anime are horrible. Just... most of them. You're right, it's really hard to find a good gem among the trash! I think I remember you liked Monochrome Mobius, which is from a LN/anime.
I did love MM
I'd add in best games the remake of Romancing saga 2 remake
What music are you using in this video? One of the songs sounds like a remix of the imperial fleet music from skies of Arcadia.
@jamessnedeker4799 I would love a version of FFD that has controller support. It's a damn fine game, and the only game on my phone.
Thank you David I almost picked up reynatis dodged a bullet there.
I thought I was only one who finds FF7 Rebirth bad and tedius AF.
Reincarnated as a Slime is one that makes me sad to see it came out so bland, it apparently had Tales staff on board and combat wise is the closest thing I've seen to a traditional Tales game in a long time
Cant play a single player Mana game. Visions looks fun but if it aint couch co-op im not interested
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is also a fantastic game, do not let IGN fool you with one of the worst review articles ever written.
would honestly put Rebirth in my bad games list this year :X I don't play nearly as many games as you do but it was my least favorite of the year. tedious as hell and completely cowardly ending that I think ruined a lot of the potential this new story was telling
I think I'll skip Unicorn Overlord though, since I'm not into strategy rpgs.
trails trough daybreak if there a categorie for best hero of the year than the winner is van arkride i love this game
I am here to see where Loop 8 ends up
It doesn't even make the list. 😂
Wow what a great list bro! 3 of 5 are on my top 5 as well.
Stellar Blade was a game I had high hopes for and surpassed expectations. It probably would be my number 1 if not for Rebirth.
FF7 simp since 1997.
Keep up the great videos man!
Glad you enjoyed!
David, did you find DQIII HD2D remake a bit easy?
Highly agree with the whole video
Yakuza like a Dragon Infinite wealth, SMT5V, Unicorn Overlord, FF7, GS Nightmare Feast
P.s. don't have Metaphor or hd2d DQ3 but everyone praises them so need to check out Metaphor
Sky Oceans looks absolutely horrible, what were they thinking? So many bizarre design decisions.
Ys X: Nordics was pretty fun
What did you think of LAD:Infinite Wealth?
Oh I loved it!
My favourite JRPGs this year:
1. Ys X: Nordics
2. Visions of Mana
3. Unicorn Overlord
Eiyuden Chronicle: I wanted it to be amazing, but the game felt lackluster.
Unicorn Overlord is 🔥
That is all.
hi David
I really want to play Unicorn Overlord, but I'm only on PC so I can't do anything about it u_u
David I missed Romancing Saga R Revenge of the Seven Heroes.
Dude what I don’t understand is you call mobile games trash but then you take sponsorship from mobile/ftp games. Make up your mind
Love the trash talking that’s what originally got me to subscribe when you spoke about the “last 3Ds game” that was a ripoff 😂
"Vomitrocious" is brilliant! Definitely stealing that.
One of the best words I’ve ever heard
I want to get Dragonquest 3. I have a switch & PS5. Any suggestions which system i should get it for?
I got it for the switch. I like the portability
@davidvinc I was thinking the same, especially with it being this type of graphics. Now I've decided. Thank you, David!
@brentwalker5726 I'd also recommend Switch. I personally got it for the PS5 just because I use that console more often, but the performance and presentation is just as good on the Switch as it's not a very demanding game, and the extra portability is always a good thing.
love hearing about both the good and the bad in one video, David with another banger 👏
Thanks so much, I loved making the video!
FF7 Rebirth needs to be on the worst list.
I love how your last pick for bad games was an anime based game when you praised Goblin Slayer, an anime based game. 😆 But I get it. Not all games are created equal.
Goblin Slayer is kind of like FFT, which I adore, Slime.... just sucked.
Eiyuden and Romancing SaGa 2 are 2 on the best list.
I love Metaphor, but I honestly still think P5 is better. I didn't like that new Archetypes were tied to Follower ranks, it made me feel pressured to focus on the Followers that give the upgraded Archetypes I want, instead of the ones whose stories I liked.
For me Ys X is GotY, but Visions of Mana is very close behind (so is the Silent Hill 2 Remake, but that doesn't fit here). Ys never misses.
Best and worst RPGs of 2024 with David
Metaphor Re Fantazio, Persona 3 Reload, DQ3, SMT V Vengeance on Best RPG’s
Im currently playing through visons of mana. I loved the first half of the game, but after chapter 6 all the padded side quest after every town main story quest and every chapter is honestly just as bad as star ocean: integrity and faithlessness. Its feeling like a forced chore. I still love the graphics artwork and main story, but the game is becoming a chore. Im really starting to not enjoy it.
Then don’t do the sidequests? Do what you enjoy
I'm so glad northern war sucks. The whole anime/mobile game is a shameful lazy cash grab and an insult to the main series.
I am loving farmagia I stream the game in my channel there mistake they should release the anime first and it’s not anyone cup of tea
