What if THEY played drums on Toto's AFRICA instead of Jeff Porcaro?

- • Brecker Brothers Some ... Try this one after listening to Lars.
Not in the pocket I know! Some intentional, some I just did not even practice. But....Here we get a glimpse of what Africa may have sounded like if Baby Dodds or John Bonham or Tony Williams or Vinnie, or Lars or Buddy Rich and others had played on this great track.
Be happy people, it's all in good fun! I get NO compensation for this due to using the TOTO track. That's fine. Never thought this would go so crazy, but almost 100k now. Wish I would have taken more time.
O.K. now for the tough part. Explaining humor, kind of kills the joke. But here goes. Some folks are taking life WAY too seriously. This was done SO quickly and off the cuff. I got the idea and just kept going. I could barely hear the track - no excuse I know. Was not in the pocket for sure. That was not the point anyway. I would literally come up with an idea of another one as I played. So, I did another one until I felt it was enough. Just kept hitting pause and then did a new one. Mostly this has gotten a lot of great comments. A few haters. A few that COVID has ruined their ability to laugh at something only intended for fun. Really, I am just wanting to bring some distraction to the difficulties we are all facing. Honestly, not one of these drummers is a bad drummer. All are to be highly regarded including Lars. I did not even pick the thumbnail! YT did that automatically. I went with it. This was wham bam and done.
Redo or not? That is the question. I can't redo spontaneity. It may work. It may not. Glad it made MOST people laugh. I may redo it. Vote below in the comments.

Hands up those who waited especially to hear “Lars” 😂
Except Lars no use ride. He china that shit 24/7
Africa vs Fade to Black LOL I f'ing busted out laughing
Yes
Lars part needs more snare fills. Way more snare fills. Way way more snare fills.
It sounded like shit and he fucked it up so essentially..spot on. Best Lars cover ever.
HAHAHAHA The Steward Copeland was right on!
True! So was Buddy Rich and Mitch Mitchel. Awesome play.
i loved how you could almost see him trying not to play the backbeat on 2 and 4
Not at all.
that was PERFECT!
The pause in the middle of Lars made me laugh LOL.
HE FOKING LOST THE BEAT!
Why did you laugh laugh out loud?
Because of the stop. Lars gave up mid song. But He’s played some great stuff over the years.
Same. 😄
Dude, I was laughing so hard when he stopped. Classic Lars!!!
That was incredible! I would like a full version of Stuart Copeland one, that would be a blast!
vinni and stuart rule this absolutely
this has convinced me that Africa could be a Police song
That Copeland groove was spot on 😅
totally agree
Every song in the world could be a police song
Sting's voice would be interesting on this song.
ABSOLUTLEY..!!!
The Stewart Copeland was my favorite. So appropriate for this song.
The Ringo one was really tasteful as well.
Also Phil Gould
Really giving Lars more credit than he deserves on that double kick
To be more realistic the tempo should have gradually risen to double after eight bars...
Stop it, both of you! I am dying!
True🤣🤣
Hahaha, poor Lars.
He even gets where Lars inevitably goes out of time and stumbles back in again, lol
3:36 Obviously a Lars-Live-Version :D
Edit: A lots of us making fun of Lars, so do I. Nevertheless was he my childhood-hero in drumming! He has his own style of drumming (and rhythm ;D) which definitely inspired so many of us.
He's a great drummer. Just a fun pile on.
Alternatively titled: How other drummers would ruin any chance of this song topping the charts worldwide.
Everyone except for Copeland
@@inthedream9127 totally agree
But also that Steve Gadd part was believeble?
@@inthedream9127 that pfp and username killed me. That is hilarious and I don’t even know why.
Except for Gould, Colaiuta, and Vega.
Pretty sure the downvotes were from Lars!!
John Bonham was a perfect fit for Led Zeppelin, Stewart Copeland perfect for The Police, Lars Ulrich perfect for nobody really, Jeff Porcaro perfect for Toto and well most of the musicians in the business back in the day. Excellent video
Porcaro was one of the greatest ever and most people have no idea that he was the studio drummer for many of their favorite and most successful records in his far to short era, "Beat It" by Michael Jackson for one of the 100's of examples.
Sorry dude, but in that list, I think Lars Ulrich is the best example of a perfect fit for a band. Metallica’s sound is unique, and we all know that is in big part because of Lars...
Fool In The Rain is Rosana basically
He's rich and your broke.
@@jkranitesLOL! I'm definitely not broke. Be well, my friend.
The Lars Ulrich one wasn’t accurate he doesn’t use a ride cymbal
lol true. Open hi hat all the time
@@twowheels808 China*
Needs china
lol
He likes to postpone a crash usually hit on the 1, but he hits it on 3 together with the snare
Ringo swinging his sticks side to side, spot on! Love the attention to detail.
Burst out laughing at that point!
That isn't how Ringo did it. He made a figure 8.
@@badtelevision5482 what do you mean, I just started playing drums and I'm also examining this swing of his, any tips??
@@itamarbushari88 Yeah. don't start out with Ringo. He's one of the most deceptively difficult drummers to copy.
If you are going to try notice how Ringo hits with a down strike on the down beat, slightly runs his hand and does a backhanded sweep across the hat for the up beat.
@@badtelevision5482 yeah I'm seeing something like that, can you detail and explain a little bit for me?
I'm glad Jeff Porcaro played on the track, but this guy has some great chops and does a pretty good job of mimicking some of the greats!
This was wonderful and I was laughing (in the best possible way) all the way through. You really show how well you've listened to and practiced the styles of a very wide variety of drummers and styles. You are a really fine player. And to every so-serious commenter with their "Bonham, Purdie shuffle, blah, blah, blah" and "your timing was occasionally off," or dissing it because (heaven forbid) no Peart: this is so clearly a just-for-fun, wink-wink nudge-nudge effort by a very good drummer to put a smile on our faces. Mission accomplished! And how many of you haters are 1) drummers who know how hard this sh*t is? and 2) familiar with so wide a range of music and styles that you can pull Baby Dodds and Lars Ulrich off your sticks?
My vote is for more! My personal suggestions for other idiosyncratic players: Moon (who some mentioned below), Charlie Watts, Ginger Baker, Carly Barrett, Jo Jo Meyer, Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Phil Rudd and Milford Graves....and maybe Meg White.
And BTW -- all your other videos are great too!
You get it! Thank you!
Only trouble with the Lars and Criss is that his impressions of both were actually done without losing the tempo. Better job than either of them.
uahuhauhauhauhauhau
3:37
@Mike Kren my thoughts too! and I'm not a drummer.
Golden!
Everyone's piss takes of Lars are from the Reload sessions when he started to go south, for the first 5 albums he was lethal.
Not sure why, but I laughed so fucking hard at the Tony Williams bit.
I did the same.
Same here.
Yup. It was unmistakably Tony Williams. So out of place yet so clearly him.
Even the Buddy Rich raging out is very spot on
OMG, I laughed out loud at TW too... His impressions were very good. He's got most of them pretty cold. Excellent chops too!
This is HILARIOUS but the important thing here is YOU are a great drummer. SUBBED
I have been sitting here thinking “why is everyone wearing the same shirt”
No matter what you say the song is overplayed by either version.
HiLARS
It takes an awesome drummer to replicate those parts. 😄
Absolutely
That was AWESOME. Hell of a drummer. I’d like to see you do a Neil Peart version. Keith Moon, Simon Phillips, Gavin Harrison.
Just watch 2013 live version when simon was with them
Brilliant! Would have loved to have seen Neil Peart's interpretation of this song.
I thought the same thing
I gotta say if Toto did a session with Copeland I'd love to watch that. IMO Copeland would be a fair fit in Toto as Jeff passed on. Just saying
Totally agree. Definitely flowed PERFECTLY!!!!
I’d like to see a super group with Copeland, Lee, Lifeson, and Shaw, just let geddy play the bass
@@brentparks3669 OMG !!!!! That'd be AWESOME !!!!!! Geddy pounding on the bass with Alex again would be a dream come true.
If Geddy wasn't up for it I'd like to see Flea included in that cast.
@@brentparks3669 just dont let him sing...
steve and vinnie fills into the chorus are crazy good - well done.
Captured Stewart Copeland and Mitch Mitchell perfectly. Bonham’s caricature was funny. And the Lars impression was hilarious.
Hahaha, imagine Phil the Fill Collins, tutum-tutum-tutum-tutum-tum-tum It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from youuuu..... Great video, loved it!
HEY LARS...THATS A TASTY LICK
- no one. Ever.
Well he did something right... $$$$$$
*snorts line*
It sounds stock
That's funny I was listening to Disposable Heroes on the way home today and he sure went off on that. Of course in addition to many other songs.
@DEAD GRATEFUL HEY HERE'S A NEW METALLICA ALBUM... LET'S BUY IT SO WE CAN HEAR LARS TASTY LICKS
- no one. Ever
LOL. Loved this. Just like you implied, I imagine Steve Gadd and Carlos Vega would play closer to Jeff's taste. Stewart Copeland was just right on. I think Vinnie would play closer to the original groove but I enjoyed your Vinniesque references a lot.
I loved the Stewart Copeland version as well.. lol..
HAH! The Stewart Copeland one was perfect! It just fit. Loved Phil Gould too. Great vid!
What a delightful concept and nuanced execution. It really demonstrates the pivotal role of the drummer. As a drummer, I watched it all with a smile of appreciation on my face. (Loved your essences of Copeland, Gadd, Colaiuta, Tony Williams(!), Buddy-with-bite, and the vastly under-appreciated Mitch Mitchell in particular.)
This is great!! I'm sharing this video with a percussionist buddy of mine who played with Vinny and was friends with the Porcaro family. You nailed it!
I love seeing the mix of all these different styles, really makes you appreciate all the drummers being to their respective bands
Ringo was hilarious!
Totally enjoyed this!!
Imagine if any one of these other drummers was the original and Jeff Porcaro was in this list...
P.s. The Stewart Copeland lick was money
This is like the deepest drummer only joke ever 🤣🤣 thumbs down guys have no sense of humour !!
Eh, I’m a bassist and I get it! I got great laughs out of this!
@@michaelosborn2568 good to see it’s not just drummer then 👌👊
Ringo was spot on!! Still laughing at that one
You can actually see Ringo playing on Africa, look for "africa ringo stars all band",
You're damn lucky I watched your video, man. The idea of anyone other than JP playing drums on Toto records is like a living nightmare that I can't escape from...
My god the Peter Chriss one had me laughing out loud haha
This was nothing short of brilliant
Peter Criss's inability to keep time is the best part of this.
LOL... nice.
And Lars' fuck up 🤣🤣🤣
A lot of them have that problem...
None of them are
Peter Criss was the drummer for KISS, what band are you in?
This is fabulous. A very enjoyable listen. Those PST7s sound excellent for this circumstance.
They are!
Neat concept for a video of techniques. Good song choice and nice playing.
So funny for all of us drum nerds! But also, incredible playing across all of the styles and approaches!
lol at the Stewart Copeland one. He just CANT keep it simple!!!
That was awesome, Sir!
Literally in every example you were way ahead of the beat going into the chorus. lol
I know, someone had to say it, I’m actually surprised they just posted it like this haha, I’m not perfect but I mean it seems quite obvious
Steve Gadd's version was almost on point, tho
Pretty sure the point was to be comedic. Lol
@@jacobwetzel9124 the problem is most of those legends wouldn't rush so terribly. Hardly comedic.
facts. And that Bonzo impression was awful
the Lars one would have been more accurate if the toms sounded like plastic buckets.
and trash can lid snare, but the fact that he emulated losing his place in the song made me give the video a thumbs up lol
True, but he did nail Lars losing the beat.... :)
And no ride cymbal, only China
ROFL 🤣
That and the removal of the ride cymbal.
All I can say is thank God Toto had Jeff Porcaro
Simon Phillips was the better one inclusive Rosanna!
@@frankmeenzen787 🤣
Thank God that they had both Jeff Porcaro and Simon Phillips... and who knows? Maybe Simon will return once more in the future?
@@CaptainSpyware Indeed and maybe! Single requirement: A world without
the leadership of Klaus Schwab with his World Economic Forum and the
Communistic Party Of China with their Corona forever plan!
Bonham would chill like the boss he was through to the last chorus, where he then deliver an earth shattering 'Levee-esque' 4/4.
This is brilliant!! Thoroughly enjoyed it. You captured those styles perfectly.
The "Where are we?" Lars impression was perfection.
The Vinnie licks are bang on! The ‘I’m Tweaked’ groove just doesn’t fit Africa though 😆 but the reference is brilliant
Dude.... Great chops, love the improv on so many style drummers. You nailed em all..... Kudos....
Please do more of these
Copeland sounded the BEST !!!!! Worked perfectly.
Omg! Simply brilliant! Perfect sarcastic dry drummer humor. The Vinny section had me cracking up
Brilliant. Loved the grip changes and stylistic additions
Hahaha this is amazing. Your dynamics are superb as well Sir.
Aaahh...I see what you did there...very clever...quality drumming by the way...
Cool, thanks
Steve is the only one who doesn’t rush his fills!
I love how the Lars impression was perfect right down to his trademark fk-up.
Your kit sounds awesome man!
Disclaimer: Imitating Keith Moon could result in destruction of your drum kit.
Haha, the Lars Ulrich stop was authentic !
He played it better than lars ever could
@Drok that’s a lie but whatever
@@drok7619 Sure, that's why this guy is nobody and Lars is in the biggest band of the century.
it's a joke and kinda funny but I really don't understand all the hate for Lars, he co created and co wrote songs for the greatest metal band in history ( album and ticket sales make this undebatable) love him or hate him he is one of the most successful drummers on the planet.
@@rickysreviewsandhowtos Greatest metal band in history??? You have to check your metal. The only undebatable thing is that the made a lot of money and popularized the sound. But now they are neither metal nor musically great.
Jim,Cool how you jump through the various styles. Waiting now for your Jeff Procaro "interpretation"
Now that is difficult!
Loved it. Your drums sound really good and of course the playing was spot on
I dont think Bonham would have played Rock n Roll probably more closer to Moby Dick with hands. Remember Jeff took Fool in the Rain as the basis for Rosanna. Overall great job though.
And remember John bonham took the Purdue shuffle for fool in the rain!!!!
I feel like he would've done quarters with lots of syncopated bass drum, maybe a few doubles. A sort of Kashmir thing. Every other impression was SPOT on, though.
Is true I think he did not mimick bonham
This literally just made my day, that was awesome 😂
This was so amusing. Thanks.
Yoooo you nailed Ringo's swingin hi hat - right on!
The ride bell part you did for Weckl was hilariously accurate
Fascinating, and beautifully done! I could deal with an alternate reality with Steve Gadd in Toto. Russ Kunkel and Phil Gould too.
Dude these impressions were spot on! Enjoyed the hell out of this :-)
This is GREAT stuff. Get's all us drummers to think very deeply about those signature grooves of the drummers you were demonstrating. .....AND gets non drummers to see just how much difference the drums make in any song. Wonderful idea. I subbed instantly.
Thank you! Appreciated.
"We're not worthy! We're not worthy!" Bow to the MASTER. DANG.
Cool idea, well done!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼One of the best and funny performance I've ever seen on the Internet!! Congrats and thanks
This is Excellent!! The styles of each drummer are spot on. I loved the Weckl and Gadd parts along with the Lars "Where am I?" This was great!!
the imagining of Stewart Copeland playing sounded pretty decent probably the best of all 🥁🌊
Great job young man,, it has taken you clearly hours to out this together. Love your humour, effort and open mind.. Thank You for sharing
MP
Those are some serious skills. Love your effortlessly groovy rolls!
That was so well done. Incredibly well done!
Not quite. More like beats (or impressions of these guys) with Toto playing in the background.
Nice Leaving Me Now style fill from Gould.
Phil and Jeff sort of reminded me of one another back then.
Love the straight 1/8's from Level 42.
This is so enjoyable!
I’m watching this two months later and it’s still brilliant.
This is the best drumming video ever made. Hat tip.
...is he rushing or dragging?
Rushing… a lot
I would love to see this again. This was really fun.
Perhaps the best thing I've ever seen on the internet. Pissed myself. Drum impersonations - who knew?
Haha that was thoroughly enjoyable and spot on!:) That’s probably exactly how Lars Ulrich would play it!:) Spot on Copeland also. Great job!:)
PS only thing missing in this video is a Phil Collins version doing the ‘In The Air Tonight’ fill before the chorus:)
Oh man the Weckl was so amusing. That guy can cowbell any tune and make it a linear groove extravaganza
ahhh, so glad I stumbled upon this...it's awesome
This was awesome. I literally burst out laughing at Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Rich. "Yep, that's it, exactly."
Dave Weckl's Latin cowbell.... Spot on.
The Peter Criss had me dying 😂
probably the best sounding drummer I've seen on UA-cam
That was fantastic .... and also really pleased to hear that Ringo sounded the best.
Bonhams Fool In The Rain would have been a better match and yes, Lars don't just not use his ride. He hasn't got one. 😁
Nice video! 👌🏼
He used 1982 -1987
this is part homage and part piss take. love it.
This is awesome! Thanks for putting it out there
Glad you liked it!
Love your interpretation of the signature playing styles for each of the guys
