Whoever mic’d the drums is a genius.
Yes! Don't they sound great?
You are probably looking at the genius, producer Rick himself.
My thoughts exactly.
agreed
That was my engineer Ken “GL” Lanyon
Gregg's happiness about drumming and drumming within music is infectious. Makes you just want to play drums yourself and improve in every single aspect in musicianship. He can truly do it all.
He's like the Tim Pierce of drums😊😊
As always, Gregg is amazing.
So true, that's why he's in a different league in my opinion.
Until you realize you got bills and need a good paying job
@@jamescaliendo1030I mean, do you genuinely think every musician who wants to get better or enjoys general musicianship only does so to work professionally? That’s a pretty weird take. I practice drums daily and have for about 13 years with 0 intent to play professionally or make that my career lol. Like have you never tried to get better at a thing simply because you enjoy it?
Nothing better than an expertly tuned set of drums mic’d up by someone who actually knows what they’re doing
Even on my tiny phone speaker it sounds fat and amazing!
i dont know how people listen to anything on a phone speaker lol, i always use headphones even earbuds@@thromboid
That's the kind of drumming that is SO much harder than it looks. That's true limb independence. This guy is fantastic.
He’s also won the prestigious “coolest voice after a 3-foot-bong rip” award 🤘🏼
I love seeing the way Gregg listens to the question presented to him, and how he affirms his understanding and appreciation of the question. How does one stay so gracious and humble? Amazing performance, Gregg. Kudos to Rick and his crew for the outstanding recording as well!!!!!
What a guy. Not only is Gregg talented, practiced, skilled - he's also got a big heart and wants us all to be happy and dancing along to the music. 🎶🥁🕺
YES!!! So well deserved. Best drummer, best teacher and best mentor anyone could ever ask for. We love you Gregg!!! ❤️
Check out Estepario Saborino. This dude is next level drummer.
Siberiano@@CDJF1
The changes in dynamics are simply awesome, not to minimize the feel he gives each variation.
As a guitarist and drummer, this channel is the bomb. Rick, I so appreciate you promote drumming.
Gregg + Rick is the drum education collab the world needs.
Gregg's brain is a massive library of drum styles. "Best All Around" is well deserved!
He sounds effortless. Then you look at his face. That's focus and determination. This shit's supposed be to hard, otherwise everyone would do it at this level. This man is a legend. And by the way, the drums sound FANTASTIC, Rick!
Drummers seem to always have the best facial expressions in most bands. And always make it look easy. I'm always in awe of singing drummers because they have to use all four limbs and their voice and keep time for the rest of the band. I do have a couple of friends who are brothers where one plays the bass and other the guitar but, the bass player also plays the keyboard at the same time like JPJ(except not with his feet, lol). I've also seen them play side by side where they picked their own guitar but, played the neck of the other brothers bass/guitar.
Gregg has this thing where it never feels complicated, but trying to play a few of these things with the right turnarounds isn't actually easy
Wow. I've been playing my whole life and he just reinvigorated my love for playing drums. Man.
I saw Gregg with Ringo and his All Star Band a couple weeks ago. He was clearly the bandleader keeping all of it together, and it was a joy to watch. Plus, he just seems like a great human!
Gregg's a machine.
Such timing, so groovy.
What a drummer.. What a top bloke and I love the sound of his kit. Just the right size IMO.
Gregg loves MUSIC. All kinds and even respects and tries to learn the genres he isn't passionate about. What a great musician
Contagious happiness all around, Greg is such a lovely human being before a great drummer
I'd love to see a video with and Gregg and his brother Matt (equally awesome bass player) talking about and demonstrating how to coordinate bass and drums together to create a groove
I just got to see him live this Monday. One of my favorites. The Allstar Band killed it
He really shows why he won the award! Great playing of SO many rhythms! Wow! 🥁
Watching interviews with Gregg honestly makes me happy. His energy and demeanor and true enthusiasm for his craft is just uplifting to see. Zero ego on display, just amazing skills and appreciation for an amazing life. Truly seems like a good and fun human
Saw him with Ringo Starr last month. You could tell he and the whole band were having a good time. Infectious energy he exudes.
I love that bouncy snare thing he does with all those ghost notes; the kit is perfectly mic'd and mixed
Rick didn't pay me to say this, either. Rick, you are a class act, I love that you love music and promote and encourage it and people to play it and appreciate it and much continued success doing what you love. You're a blessed cat!
Love it when Rick concentrates on the drums that he gets the 'best all around' drummer in the biz! Love it!! Now if he could get Rick, Gregg AND Ringo together, that would blow my mind.
GOD that drum mix...I'd sell a kidney to achieve that! I LOVE the snap and top end in the snare - bright but not brittle, and of course Gregg's playing is fantastic. Great stuff!
Loved his work with victor wooten when he did the bass day thing. Completely improved my bass playing.
Gregg is the best, well deserved, he truly is the people’s drummer. So much love and generosity!!!
Hey Rick, I had the privilege of seeing Greg play with David Lee Roth back in 86. My senior year. At the old Richfield coliseum here in Northeast Ohio. Greg's playing was so great and to this day, played one of the most memorable drum solos that I can remember.
I love when Gregg's on! Some of the best episodes.
I saw Gregg with Ringo earlier this year. He's an All-Starr in every sense of the word. One of my favorite drummers playing today.
I remember seeing Gregg for the first time in 1983 playing with The Maynard Ferguson Big Band. You could tell he was going places. Maynard found so much awesome talent back in those days.
The Eat 'Em and Smile tour was one of the most energetic and talented shows I have ever seen. Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and Gregg were all top notch musicians and what else should you expect from Roth after leaving a band as talented as all the Van Halen members were. Saw this man again with Ringo's All Stars just a few years ago. He is one fantastic drummer and his enthusiasm comes across when he plays. Just look at the talented artists this man has played with.
Eat ‘Em and Smile was my first concert ever. Blew my little 14 year old mind!
I had high school friends who saw the Eat 'Em and Smile tour --- they said it was better than Van Hagar that same year
Kit sounds sublime! I've always found Greg's ability to jump styles/genres/grooves really impressive
My best friend, also drummer, met at music school over 50 years ago, eventually moved to Las Angeles and studied with Gregg. He tells me that Gregg was best teacher ever. He talks to me about his lessons and was best musical experience ever.
I’ve always found great musicians to be so modest, humble & be the greatest friends to have. You both sound like it. Out of great hearts come great music.
Gosh, the passion! The drive and development of knowledge while playing! This channel and invited guests are amazing! Thank you Rick❤
Gregg's playing is off the charts, and the passion and pure happiness he exudes about drums and music is infectious. I feel uplifted just watching him. He's got a new subscriber. Thank You Rick, for always featuring musicians who are not only top notch players, but top notch people as well.
Rick, thank you so much for showcasing Gregg and his amazing perspectives and approach. Love the chemistry you two have together. Never stop.
I had the honor of seeing Gregg with the Rodger Fox Big Band here in Auckland NZ earlier in the year, he did a clinic before the show, he was just an amazing burst of energy and fun. He Deserves any accolades he receives. Love the channel Rick, been watching for 4 years now and it never gets boring.
Oh my gosh, Rick! So glad you had Gregg on. As a drummer with less than a year under my belt (it was a bucket list item), these tips from Gregg are top notch and so helpful! Can't wait to try them out.
He’s amazing! That was awesome. His hands & footwork are amazing
I just fell from my chair just watching this.. I couldn't stop dancing and moving to the myriad of styles he is putting in his performance... Oh my god!! One of my all-time favorite drummers!
Gregg has such a jovial disposition. He strikes me as a real authentic soul and a great friend. I love watching him play and listening to his stories.
I started piano lessons at age 7 in 1967 and then a few years of guitar piano lessons in the high school bands and performing and recording ever since. Now I teach piano and playing several bands. And this is one of the best hours of my musical life. Thank you so much Rick bless your face.
This is soooo coool....really addictive mood and vibes Greg is spreading...
I never thought I would see it. Risking it all a third time. All that musical enthusiasm from Rick and Gregg in one room together at the same time, risking some type of critical mass event leading to distortions in the time signature continuum. Love it!
The genius isn’t just the smorgasbord of drum techniques it’s the way you can always hear the form coming through - so clever. Greg’s a truly great musician.
Wow, fantastic. Excellent drumming from one of the best. Such a nice guy, too. Please have him on more often, Rick.
This was so inspirational, Thank you for sharing this one with us Rick !!
Wow! It is sooooooo pleasant to not only hear but also see him play the drums! So full of artistry! Awesome!
This is so great - and so important. Thank you guys! I left this video incredibly inspired and in such a good mood! 🤩
Rick, these just keep getting better and better. Thanks for enriching our musical lives!
His joy is contagious, his drumming tremendous.
As a drummer, I've been following Greg's career since the mid eighties. Knew he was on David Lee Roth's band. Then in Modern Drummer Magazine, read he graduated North Texas State and played in the 1 O'Clock Lab Band. So I was like ok, he's really, really good (1986'ish). Been learning from Gregg ever since. Who would have ever guessed he'd be backing up Ringo in his band, touring with him for years. But, I'm sure Ringo Knows how good Gregg is too and it's what I would have done. Or any drummer who was a Beatles fan would do with a guarantee of a well funded touring career with sold out shows globally.
Gregg is the man and really fun to work with. I was lucky enough to have him and his brother Matt play on my second album in 2006. Super talented cat.
Think of the phenomenal calculations running through Greg’s brain, and the coordination and timing it takes for his body to process and accurately hit each note. An inspiration!
😁
Greetings from Fort Lauderdale 🌴☀️👋🏼😁🥁
Gregg just expressed the way allll subscribers feel about rick. Love. This channel is useful to say the very least. Every question covered by the best teacher.
Gregg is absolutely right. As I do myself I never stayed with one kind of music. I always ventured into other grooves and styles. Thanks again Rick and Gregg for an awesome show. ❤
Amazing drumming lesson. I admit my knowledge of drumming is severely lacking, but love how enthusiastic and knowledgeable Greg is about every style and aspect of the craft. Kind of reminds me of Rick.
**The Nod** Needed that today, Rick and Gregg. Thank You.
Mind blown. Gregg you rock and thanks for spotlighting these amazing people Rick! You're a rockstar as well
Those drums sound incredible. The playing, tuning and recording are spectacular.
This is the content that makes being a musician wonderful. Thanks to both of you.
A real bonus finding this, thank you Gregg for the very positive energy
Gregg’s playing on Joe Satriani’s “The Extremist” (1992) album is nothing short of phenomenal. Extremely well recorded and produced by the late, great Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones)
Love the drum sound so much! and the wy Gregg plays his rhythm and fills.. so masterful. I could listen to just the drums without any other accompaniment and it still sounds great and full!
What a flow to his drumming. It doesn’t get any better than this. Thanks Gregg and Rick.
I really like Gregg's personality. Such a real person!!!
This was so awesome to watch!!! I know nothing about any instrument, but sure do enjoy these videos!!! Gregg sure is the best and CONGRATULATIONS to him on winning best all around drummer!
He has some of the best dynamic range of any drummer, ever. Love listening to him!
my hat is off to Rick's engineer, Ken “GL” Lanyon, what a sweet-sounding kit and super tasty grooves. so smooth. His limb independent is really fun to listen to.
Greg and his brother Matt both played on Joe Satriani’s The Extremist, which is still one of my favorite records 30+ years after its release.
Mine too. I was at the video shoot for Summer Song in Saugus Ca in July or August of 1992. I set up drums for Gregg later that night at a jazz club in Sherman Oaks.
Same here I was shocked back then at how amazing the drums were above satchs shredding lol
Just Awesome Gregg!
I really enjoyed meeting you again and attending the recent clinic that you performed in Central New York at Big Apple Music.
Drum On! 🥁
Gregg is such an entertaining guy while being able to teach at the same time.
As for his drum chops, I would be happy just to listen to him playing snare - such feel and subtlety.
Gregg has an effervescent joy about his playing. I could listen to him all day. Reminds me of the joyful genre hopping of Johnny Hiland.
What a great guy! I saw him with Ringo Starr a few weeks ago and it was a phenomenal show. Thank you Rick for bringing him into the spotlight here on your channel and thank you Greg for your passion and playing ability...💞🙏💞
What an unbelievably enlightening video this was. Thank you.
Congratulation Greg! I have fallen in love with genres that I had to learn for gigs, really study it and when I get it it gets me!
My first time discovering Gregg and what a delight! Not only his playing, but his energy and attitude. Makes me smile. Great drummer and person!
I'm always amazed at how many notes/beats a musician can remember! Especially long songs for drummers!
Gregg was one of your best interviews, yet he communicated so much more in this display of great musicianship.
Gregg is an all around awesome guy, and incredible drummer.
Being able to sing first. And intuitively count 4 or 8 bar phrases while ear training as a kid. Even odd time without knowing. Really helps you become a better drummer when you get into it and learn the instrument.
It's so awesome to see the happiness of just playing
Love this guy! What a phenomenal drummer!
Awesome video guys!!
Gregg is such a solid drummer! I've always been a fan since the DLR days, and I love that he and Chad Smith took lessons from the same teacher at the mall. So cool.
Gregg brings such joy to his playing and is always so much fun to watch.
Dang Rick-that’s the BEST video on drumset playing I’ve seen in a long time! Greg Bissonette is a solid inspiration, and I love how he’s talking about other drummers. I came to love David Garibaldi after hearing him perform at the “Voices of Latin Rock” shows here in San Francisco. Hearing Gregg talk about singing a song in your head is really valuable. I love all of your videos- thank you from my heart, Rick. Your love for music is awesome, and infectious.
Gregg is such an amazing person. As kind and genuine as the day is long.
Sing the part! I love this.
What a phenom Gregg is!
Gregg's positive energy always perks me up!
All I gotta say is damn! When he took some of the jazzy rudiments into the intro parts for Hot for Teacher. 🤘🏻 One heck of a drummer and his passion puts it all together also.
Congrats, Gregg! Love watching Gregg! Not only is he an outstanding musician, he's cool as can be and his positivity and passion are infectious. Wish he was my neighbor lol
ONE F*ING GREATEST EPISODE YOU PUBLISHED HERE MR BEATO!
Absolutely llllllllloved it!
Thank you so much!
Gregg is so fun to watch... it just looks like he has a blast playing all the time!! That bit where he talks about singing the songs he's playing to is pretty much the way I come up with parts. It might not even be what my friend who wrote the riff thought of, but if it reminds me of something I feel fits I'll play it. Then it just so happens it does not slot in so easily so I'll have to mess with it, but it just gets me started on something to get the arrangement done. Great stuff guys!!
Gregg is an absolute beast. He's played on some of my absolute favorite albums, and has played for some of my favorite artists. I ran into him at a mall in SoCal - insanely nice, genuine, and so excited about his craft.
