This has to be THE definitive version of 'Abacab'. I never get tired of watching or listening to it, such energy and musicianship on display. Absolutely amazing performance by Genesis.
You aint kidding. Why don’t you stay home and watch the video then. Not to mention that the price of admission doesn’t include the right to document the performance and distribution of same
No wonder poor Phil Collins suffers from back problems - the physical effort in smacking those drums so hard and so precisely has taken its toll. The way he (and Chester) drive this piece along is absolutely stunning.
'Abacab' is a masterpiece. The musicians know it too. So happy to watch this music video, my favorite, Abacab. Genesis, one of the best in the biz. Love you Phil!
Sitting here in 2020 amazed at this performance. The final segment beginning at 6:25 gives me chills. The growing maelstrom of keys and rhythms to soaring reaches of Rutherford's solo.. magical...
I was there with my big brother....who had lost a bet with my Pa over who should come with me. He ended up being a total Genesis convert. He called a lot of their stuff “modern jazz”. I LOVE ABACAB live, fantastic. Happy days 💕
Unbelievably tight. A flawless performance by the entire band. Phil's voice is so huge, powerful, and clean.Puts the modern yo-yo, hipster bands to shame.
One of the greatest pieces of live musicianship ever committed to film. Sublime in every measurable way. Can’t think of any modern band anywhere that comes anywhere near this level. Awesome.
You're right, although, I'm sure there are bands out there who have a great chemistry and musicianship, it's just nobody knows of them, because nobody cares about that kinda music anymore. We're back to the Elvis days of faces with shadow writers.
It all begins with the fans cheering, then notice the looks of Tony at 4:13 and Daryl at 4:16. Yes, we fans of Phil know exactly what is about to happen. They all turn their heads in the direction of our boy Phil as he heads over to his drum set to carry on his beyond epic performance. Then, he sits down and with a rapid drum fill kicks the pace of the song right up through the roof. We do not even realize how fortunate we are, and, perhaps spoiled. We sometimes never want him to leave his drum set, yet we could listen to his one of a kind voice non-stop. We all love this type of mixed feelings we constantly experience unconditionally, and we never want them to cease.
88BigEtrain I saw them live in Springfield, MA in 1986. I did not comprehend the full scope of what I was witnessing and the heart of their fame! I miss them so very much. I really miss them!
+Stephen Deac You were so blessed! I would pay a true fortune to see him during that time... Hopefully, he will visit our country during his planned world tour, after the back surgery and his miraculous recovery, so that I can get to see him at least once in my life. Of course, it would still be no 1986 above and beyond epic performance that you witnessed...
I hear you BigEtrain! I am looking forward to his future tours and pray that he will be remotely near Seattle/Vacouver BC!!! Good stuff coming! Cheers.
Knock-out solo by Rutherford propelled onwards by the unstoppable forces of Phil & Chester on drums. The pinnacle of rock music. Hard to see it ever surpassed.
If this jam doesn't pull at your soul. I got news, you my friend are already dead. When Collins finishes with the lyrics that's when the fun begins. And remember boys & girls 2 drummers are better. Enjoying
No wonder Phil Collins has physical problems now - he put his whole body into playing those drums. Thanks Phil - you really were the greatest rock drummer.
10% of the population is left handed…40% of pilots are left handed. Strangely as pilot and a drummer I drum right handed…we are special people. Though Phil is an absolutely amazing drummer…I couldn’t even get near his abilities!
he put his whole body into everything on stage. anything he did was 100%. say what you will about his solo work or genesis after 75, but this man was a performer no matter what he was doing
To me, Rutherford's solo ranks among the all time greats because it wasn't scales or a circus act; it was instead a highly melodic and emotional statement that fit in with the song and the rest of the band not to mention the delivery of the sheer power of rock music.
I implore you to look at Steve Hackett (the guitarist who preceded Mike on guitar (because Mike started out on bass in Genesis)) and some of his solos. I think he was a better guitarist than Mike.
I agree - I've listened to that solo for 20 years and never get tired of it. Very intense, exciting & unique. And all magnificently punctuated by Collins & Thompson. This is one for the ages.
I've heard this song hundreds of times but it still knocks me out. Every. Damned. Time. This is a fantastic version, with the whole band firing on all cylinders. It is a thing of epic beauty.
One of the greatest songs of all time by the greatest band hands down; Abacab; second home by the sea; los endos; etc: instrumental nectar of the gods. I’ve seen the live 4 times; once in a stadium with 75,000 people; no current musicians compare to the raw power and emotion of these songs. Taylor Swift can charge thousands for a ticket and sell out shows but there’s no comparison to the musical talent
I saw Genesis the last time they came through Denver and LOVED the show. These guys are an AMAZING band to watch and listen to. Phil Collins is a gifted genius when it come to the drums. This song proves it.
Never realised til later how much of phenomenal voice Phil Collins had. I was such a Gabriel fan that I put Phil in a box and I did not let him out til years later in my head anyhow. And ontop of that I got to hear his phenomenal drumming at the time I seen him in Rochester NY. Cheers!
This is one heck of a good video..!!!!!!! I knew these guys were good, but this left me speechless. Everyone has a mini-solo as the song continues... Chester and Phil are tearing it up with the drums!!! And the ending is perfect!
I give Chester full respect, he was right up there with Phil on the drumming skills, and not many brotha's were into rock and roll back then or even now! Great performance!
I reckon this is up there with the most unbelievable live performances I've ever seen. There must be 100,000 people in that audience or more! Banks just kills it on those ARP and Prophet keyboards, Rutherford has that wicked chainsaw guitar sound and Collins and Thompson smash it on the drums, it's just so good. That dude on bass just kicks arse too, he really propels the song along. Amazing how good they were/are as musicians.
+Mike Fitzpatrick (Liquid Audio) There is a High Definition version of this, filmed in Sony HD, at the time. It was transferred to regular format. There is rumor there is a HD version of this going to be released. I have no sources, just random newsgroup posts. I would love to see this in its full (intended) glory. One of the best concerts of all time, for any band.
I was at one of the July 1987 shows at Wembley ... I don't recall which one. I'd seen them a few days earlier at Roundhey Park in Leeds (it poured down with rain through most of the show). In a box somewhere I still have my black Invisible Touch t-shirt (which is probably too small for me now). Good stuff.
Used to blast this in my apartment in St Gallen Switzerland.... neighbors loved it along with Al Jarreau and Toto.... bless from Arizona....that was back in 1983...😂❤
Absolutely outstanding musicianship. Take note of Tony during the Abacab instrumental when he's on the Quadra. Playing with his back to the rest of the band. When playing live is so reliant on visual queues, the band can't do this during Abacab.
This concert is by far my favorite one of Genesis. Man, they are on FIRE! Phil is giving 200% vocally and banging his hands off on those drums! I don’t know how he does this. His energy is off the charts during this whole concert. I seem to hear some syncopated time in there too-am I wrong? Watch the end of this concert Turn it on Again. Phil sings his heart out and drums at the end. Honestly, people don’t know how hard it is to sing like that and then go play during it. Unreal. Chester is a master at keeping pace with Phil. We didn’t realize at the time that we were witnessing a band that was the best ever. So fortunate to see them before they disbanded.
Phil could not stay away from his kit on this banger of a song. Classic!!! SHOWMANSHIP deluxe................... This is great!!!!! LOVE IT..................................
Mind exploding video. These men are so darn good... Plus two drum kits changes the song in so many ways! If you were in that crowd, you would have to be up on your feet. Love the ending.

After 40 plus years, this song still amazes me. The enthusiasm, the skill, the Greatness of this band.
A real pounding rocker.
One of the best live performances ever.
Abacab has always been my favorite Genesis song and this version brought me to tears. The instrumental is stunning.
This has to be THE definitive version of 'Abacab'. I never get tired of watching or listening to it, such energy and musicianship on display.
Absolutely amazing performance by Genesis.
Kinda partial to the 1981 version but this is TRE-mendous.
One of the best rock shows i ever heard and see, Genesis, And rock is my life forever!
All of them at their absolute peak.

So true. They don’t even look Pictures or watch the videos. They just acquire them.
yeah i saw one smoking a club and another reading something static written on a piece of paper. What a joke.
You can enjoy the music and also own a smartphone
A real rock concert where the band just blows the crowd away with talent from another planet.

Literally just gave me chills too!
Rutherford was absolutely ON FIRE for the last couple of minutes. Epic.
Mike Rutherford playing the hell out of that guitar, great job all!
Tim Root Mike doesnt get the credit and recognition he deserves imo cause he is one hell of a guitar player!!
Tim Root Orgasmic solo by Rutherford.
And bassist!
Love the beat to this song as it starts

This song just blew my mind. One of my favorites of Genesis. It's just as good, if not better, when it's live.

Amazing keyboard work by Banks.

Bloody hell. This rocked HARD. Bravo, gentlemen.
Collins and Thompson's dual drumming is absolutely amazing. This song is like a powerful train cruising on. It is an awesome thing to hear.
