I've got a 2012 sDrive20d and it's awesome. I wouldn't call it an SUV but if you want load capacity of an estate car but without feeling old this is the car to get. Goes all the way to 145mph on German autobahn and I was comfy driving it for 13 hours straight. Definitely recommend getting one with idrive and satnav. This is great car for dads who don't want a boring estate or minivan.
Luca Natoli yes, the new one is on a Mini platform, not a genuine BMW DNA. Bmw offers something special (except the mini platform models)not only premium quality. The only producers with similar concepts are Porsche, Mercedes and Jaguar, but apparently bmw does it a bit better. The competition still has some good models but most of the range are less sharp. Porsche actually does a good job and they have even better models but at considerably higher costs.
I just bought one used 1 month ago, whatever said in the review is true, dashboard doesn't give premium feel and the steering is so hard that u feel like driving double the size car and finally it's not a suv but car with good ground clearance and basically I'm a fan of bmw f10 but this one looks good in real even the dashboard has sportive feeling and I couldn't resist buying it after I test drove it, now I also want to own an bmw f10 😀
Bmw is about dynamics and driving not about going from a to b. The hydraulic steering and the heavy feel is so much better for people that appreciate driving, and it is now rare to find. Then it sits on a 3 series platform, with 50:50 weight distribution so a neutral balance which is great, RWD feel for the xdrive which is sporty. It's hard to find a car with these features, especially an suv or crossover. The cheap feel plastic is anyway durable but it seems that they wanted to cut the costs which was actually good because it allowed people that could afford it otherwise to benefit from the special BMW platform. And the price was indeed lower started from 25.000€ for the base model. The only problem was with the n47 engine distribution chain but that problem was on all models with that engine not x1 only. This car I think is still the best handling car in its class on the market. If you find a better one in that price range (30-35k) I would like to see it because I'm looking for replacing my x1 (in fact because of a potential issue with the distribution although it still runs smoothly, which was a silly mistake by BMW). Also which car in this class looks better? Only the new x2 now. That badge is wanted for a reason. I'm surprised because the reviewer is a car specialist and I'm sure he knows about these details.
I went to my BMW show room today and this car has had a face lift, looks much better now and was told it much better to drive looking forward to Carbuyer doing another review when they can get their hands on one.
@@madsam9403 fast forward to now. Do Not Buy it. The engine is blown, and the cost for a new engine + labour can buy you a brand new car. All the BMW cars has this issue, you can search on youtube "BMW problem". Get yourself a Toyota, good quality car stay for a long time.
Agree with most of what was said. I own an E90 335i and am currently driving an X1 as a loaner. I was puzzled about the steering comment though. At least in the one I'm driving, it feels like there is /too/ much power steering, leaving it feeling a bit vague and as though you are on an icy road. The steering in my 3 series is a lot heavier and gives you way more feedback (maybe a bit too much as the steering tends to snatch if you hit a pot hole!). I thought the manual also felt a bit too loose. On my car (depsite being 5 years old), you have to give it a decent amount of force to get into gear, meaning that you never misshift. Within 15 minutes of driving the X1, I accidentally put it in reverse at some lights and had a near miss with the car behind... Simply because it lacked the resistance I'm used to. Interior definitely does not feel as good quality as my 3, and also what is kind of disappointing is that 50% of the interior seems to be lifted from the last generation 3 series. The instrument panel, gear stick, stereo, air con, even the indicator/wiper stalks and power window switches! Engine is pretty woeful too. I've got the 2.0 diesel AWD and strangely enough for a diesel it seems to really lack power down low. Like you could be pulling out of a junction... nothing, nothing, nothing - almost get hit by an oncoming car, and then as you are 50% through the turn it suddenly picks up and shoots forward. It's also amazingly noisy on acceleration but to be fair, motorway cruising at 2k RPM is decent. I guess that's to be expected from a diesel, but considering how BMWs are generally well insulated and that you could barely hear my 335 with a performance exhaust, let alone the stock one, it's pretty disappointing. I find the clutch to be a bit vague too - never really sure if you are on the biting point which is weird. Of course all this could just be that I suck as a driver lol, but I think I'm probably really spoiled by my 3 series though. I suppose to be fair I should throw in some positives. It's very comfortable and the cabin is a very nice place to be, classic BMW design. It's also very practical - way more practical than my 3 series which is funny considering the X1 is actually marginally shorter and narrower than my car. Oh, it has USB audio (standard feature for most but missing on my car) and DAB which is pretty nice! Air con is very effective too. FYI the X1 I am in is a 2014 with 1,800 miles, so the issues I've found aren't due to age or wear and tear
The heavy steering issue was only present on the pre-facelift model. From 2013 onwards they supposedly fixed this issue. The main problem as you said is how much they've carried over from the old 3 series. The only thing in favour of this car compared to the Q3 IMO is its RWD drivetrain, but the new x1 will be FWD unfortunately
Man I was hoping only the 2 series MPV was going to be FWD, but now I've heard that the 1 series is going to be FWD and now the X1 too? BMW what are you doing? Is it only a matter of time before the 3 series is FWD?!?! lol
Zero1Zero1 Unfortunately they'll still appeal to buyers who are enticed by the brand but have no idea what it stands for. Mercedes have done the same and they got away with it. The 3 series should be safe for now though.
Excellent review. I agree the X1 seems a little odd and rear seats and trunk veing very small. Price is too high for what you get and the best part of the vehicle is the excellent engine. Audi Q3 is a better choice or if you can BMW X3.
My mother drives this car in town a lot, and yes it is pretty heavy. And I have to sat that the materials aren't that bad at all. They sounds they make are bad, but they look good and they are but together really good. But it is not a 40 grand plus car.
Of course it has power steering! But if you prefer an even lighter handling at lower speeds "Servotronic Steering" (180 pound option) will increase power steering assistance even more at lower speeds while keeping the high speed stability.
Ok the steering at low speeds isn’t doable by just your fingers like in other cars but the steering is just fine. It really isn’t difficult to steer at all
I have absolutely no idea what this bloke is talking about, poor leg room !!, poor power steering !!! plastic feel !! I have a 2010 2.0 xdrive, it's a great car, it's comfortable, spacious, and a pleasure to drive, I'm 6ft 3 and there is more than enough room in the back and the boot has more than enough room for my bullmastiff, the dashboard doesn't feel like cheap plastic. I could go on about this all day but I'm off for a drive in my fantastic x1.
I really don't know what the reviewer is talking about. I have this car and this guy by the way forgot to say that the car he is reviewing is the X1 with M package. Anyway, don't let this particular review turn you away from buying this car. You have to DRIVE this car and afterwards make a decision. I know you are going to love how good this car rides. The best option for having fun in a car not as big as a SUV not as low as a sedan and with plenty of space.
i have an x1 and it is amazing i have the top end one with the i drive and sunroof also the top diesel mine is the two wheel one dont listen to the haters it is a SAV not an SUV it is a good car once u test drive or own one you would like it the higher one has a lighter steering trust me this is a good cr quality on the top model is really good
The materials are not to be scratched or ticked you ...@#$%@. It is more important to not rattle or look cheap. For example you don't see shiny surfaces easily in the X1.
Was this car on winter tyres at the time of filming this because it has different wheels to the same car that is pictured on google images which has actual M Sport wheels on it?
That sucks about the 4 banger. MotorTrend said the US version was going to have a 300hp V6 under the hood. Guess they changed their mind. Not bad for $31,545 base, but add the works and were talking about bucca dollars. $52,890 is insane and way over priced for an X1
@Adzzz1995 Actually, I've never heard of a Mercedes SUV to have a bad ride. The Audi Q3 which Matt tested several weeks ago was praised for its ride too. As for off-roading, some are pretty good at that too.
@TheMusicandlyricz why not.this are for people who dont want to spend more for an x3/x5.its like you saying there is no point having a 3 series coz there is the 5/7 series.
Of course there is power steering. Just that it's maybe not quite as strong as in, say Mercedes or other grandpa-mobile. The weaker support was done so that you have a better feel of the drive, and that is excellent in X1. Test drive it, and you'll see what I mean. You want soft riding easy steering car - get Merc E class, or other Cadillac kind of yacht. Beige with fake wood finish probably. :)
@MacGyver920 well not really.....i live in australia and not sure of any of these cars are sold in the uk but cars like the nissan patrol, toyota land cruiser ect......are built to be strong have good off road capability....but not so expensive or luxurious
i was about to buy a BMW X1 S drive with sht interior quality with sht options. at same price i bought a Mercedes new C class AMG package..awesome car :)
Interior is cheap because it's from the old series 1. BMW did that to cut price of X1 as much as possible so they can attack Tiguan and they did it well.
@Adzzz1995 more space, comfort practicality and ability to some mild off roading also some people like the higher siting position and there is more status because he car is bigger. basically crossovers allow good looks(for most people) praticality of an mpv or hatchback and are good for city and slippery surfaces
So the reviewer wanted a cheap SUV with super high quality build materials? Only problem is that it's not possible! X1 is the lowest end SUV BMW has to offer so naturally there are compromises. Go to X6 if you want luxury and can afford it.
Mat, thanks for highlighting X1's downsides for me! It definitely goes off my list - it was Tiguan on the other side, and when I tested it, it had soft-touch plastics almost everywhere and it can sit three people at the back with good space.
That really depends on what model. some yes, some no. My old one was manual, which was hard to find. But the sporty M's like m3 and what not, they are common in manual.
please ..try to show the dashboards in all the cars you make a review of .. it's really important for your viewers to feel they are driving it ,, about all your videos don't reveal dashboards.. thanks
that depends. The older one is rear wheel drive, the new ones are front wheel drive. As for steering, mine has hydrolic steering, so can't tell what he is talking about with the city driving as I have no troubles. Mine has the M sports package with adaptive suspension, so bumps and what not are no problem and you feel nothing at all. Interior is better quality with the M sports package rather then standard. But if you are wanting it to fit 5 people, this will fit 4 no problem, the tunnel in the middle prevents adults using the middle back seat (better suited for children the middle seat).
@sspope i dont think that people are understanding what im saying.....im not saying that these cars have less off roading capablities then say a (eg) mitsubishi pajero but why would u pay so much for such a beautiful car then put it through the punishment of off roading.....and if u dont plan to....then why not pay less for a sedan and get a better ride...thats all im saying....
I like how they play happy music while talking about the negatives.
Wow! Young Mat Watson
awkward looks? I think the X1 looks quite good.

I've got a 2012 sDrive20d and it's awesome. I wouldn't call it an SUV but if you want load capacity of an estate car but without feeling old this is the car to get. got the 2011 x1 at release. Not letting go of it, especially now that the new x1 are all front wheel drive.

When he got into his car at 0.48 and said the X1 I came in subtitles "Big Storm" thats fun

This likely to be one of the best small suvs considering the resale value is now 1/4 of the current asking price in my country
Bmw is about dynamics and driving not about going from a to b. The hydraulic steering and the heavy feel is so much better for people that appreciate driving, and it is now rare to find. 100 percent agree with the steering I love it
The only "crossover" I would ever consider buying. BMW for life!

Thanks for another great video Matt, my birthday has just gotten this much better. :)
I got a 2011 BMW x1 x pack great car and I'm happy I purchased it
Nah that part beside the handbrake is definitely a wallet holder. At least thats what I use it for 😆
I meant the restyled x1 , new engines, higher quality interiors, direction lights in the side mirriors.. Etc
Oh dear, i found younger Mat!! 😆

This is the simpliest X1. X1 28xdrive is fantastic. v6 with full system.

Lyubomir Georgiev 10.8L / 100 KM. So full tank gets roughlt 600 - 700 km's.
I ALSO DON'HAVE CLUE WHAT THIS MAN TALKING ABOUT,,i have this car in same color and everything working perfect easy and nice to drive ,,
The shape (its like a mini X5) and the higher grond clearance not offered on BMWs hatchbacks.

I don't know why BMW convinced that the 7-series looks is so good and sexy so they make most of their models look exactly like it !
As always, a brilliant review, Mat! :D Like the car as well.
I'm looking at buying a 2013 X1 28i Msport in 2024, I'm tired of all of the screens nannies an gimmicks, this seems like a perfect fit.
no, it has power steering, but the steering is just really firm. My mom has an x5 and it is extremely difficult to turn.
that's why I love British comedies
wdym
this x1 in the video is an M Sport but it has SE wheels, hmmmm
i have an x1 and it is amazing i have the top end one with the i drive and sunroof also the top diesel mine is the two wheel one dont listen to the haters it is a SAV not an SUV it is a good car once u test drive or own one you would like it the higher one has a lighter steering trust me this is a good cr quality on the top model is really good

I just got one of those, I love it !! A little lazy the guy who makes these videos, or maybe he was in a rush to get to the bathroom.
Great review he is usually spot on
You said it, X5 mini, but it does not seem to do the crossover duty very well, and it should be a must for a X line car huh?
in Australia and USA Air Conditioning was standard since 1986 on all BMWs. Europe and rest of world as of 2006 or later. Very funny.
Matt, please consider reviewing the Mini Cooper Coupe and the BMW 7 series :) Great review as always, keep them going :)
@tokekkk Really? I mean, in Malaysia, We have Electric Power Steering in MyVis. This does NOT come with power steering at all.
@Adzzz1995 Actually, I've never heard of a Mercedes SUV to have a bad ride. The Audi Q3 which Matt tested several weeks ago was praised for its ride too. As for off-roading, some are pretty good at that too.
I usually prefer BMW's over Audi's, but this time I prefer the q3
Q3? I believe Q2 is better to compare to the X1 . Both is beauty but I don't like timing belt:) and preferred the chain like BMW use
@TheMusicandlyricz why not.this are for people who dont want to spend more for an x3/x5.its like you saying there is no point having a 3 series coz there is the 5/7 series.
just got the new X1 a few days ago, great car. but the i really hate the fact that there is no power steering!
0:20 FAIL ! It still gets stuck when he tryes to lift it out ! But good review !! Matt is the best !
Could you please guys review the new bmw x1 ? It's been a huge seller. Thanks
2:58 Golf R ❤
Its like head to head.
@MacGyver920 well not really.....i live in australia and not sure of any of these cars are sold in the uk but cars like the nissan patrol, toyota land cruiser ect......are built to be strong have good off road capability....but not so expensive or luxurious
is that the first time u reviewed the seats AFTER the drive?
It is on the SUV line of bmw, otherwise it would be on the hatchback line though. It's more hatchback than SUV, so, why in the X line?
There is a steering wheel adjustment??? Mine doesn’t
@sahartyman i got it last week too and I'm starting to feel the burn in my arms. apart from that, its not that bad
Probably the first time Mat actually uses heavy luggage!
Not sold in UK, or Europe. CarBuyer only reviews cars sold in the UK. plz
i was about to buy a BMW X1 S drive with sht interior quality with sht options. at same price i bought a Mercedes new C class AMG package..awesome car :)
Akward looks? I love this car's looks...
2:56
Love the Golf R :D
Interior is cheap because it's from the old series 1. BMW did that to cut price of X1 as much as possible so they can attack Tiguan and they did it well.
What kind of Carwow is this? 😂
Buy a Focus S/W, they look damn good!
I am not bmw x1 mom and i like how it looks
Hi, I was just wondering what the song is at the end of the clip.
Pretty awesome review btw.
Cheers,
so does it have power steering or not??people say it has some not
@Adzzz1995 more space, comfort practicality and ability to some mild off roading also some people like the higher siting position and there is more status because he car is bigger.
basically crossovers allow good looks(for most people) praticality of an mpv or hatchback and are good for city and slippery surfaces
Can you review the new Mercedes B class pls?
Are manual x1s rare >> please reply my wife is buying one
That really depends on what model. some yes, some no. My old one was manual, which was hard to find. But the sporty M's like m3 and what not, they are common in manual.
isnt air conditioning standard on all cars?
@tokekkk listen @3:03..he said " it seems though bmw completely forgot..
please ..try to show the dashboards in all the cars you make a review of ..
it's really important for your viewers to feel they are driving it ,,
about all your videos don't reveal dashboards..
thanks
Please review the new volkswagen sharan.
@Adzzz1995 You mean, what's the point of SUV's in the first place? It isn't only the German SUV's who can't go off road, nobody can.
@sahartyman i have no idea you would buy a car with no power steering in this day of age...
What's the price please
Paddle shifters are availible
Imagine someones facial expression when they catch me watching this revire.
So the old x1 is a no go. I was considering it for my dad
that depends. But if you are wanting it to fit 5 people, this will fit 4 no problem, the tunnel in the middle prevents adults using the middle back seat (better suited for children the middle seat).
can you do a review of the bmw 7 series? thank you!
Please, do review for new Kia Optima.
@sahartyman liar.it has power steering its just heavy.listen @3:01.he said "its seems though bmw completely forgot".. lol
Please review BMW 6 series Gran Coupe
If the steering was easy, you would complain about that, no win situation
Please review the European version of the Camaro !!!!
The steering isn't heavy at all.
Bollocks, the X3 and X5 don't come with rear wheel drive. This one does.
@enemay why is that my friend?
@mo7eby 3:38 That looks like a dashboard
Do the X6!!!!
It's not all that bad looking. Although I would just buy the BMW 3-series Touring.
