My cat is matted on her stomach too. It’s horrible. Don’t know what I’m going to do. She won’t let you anywhere near her stomach. I just wish I had something that could literally knock her out so I could just get it done to give her relief. It would take days if I could even get to her stomach. I honestly don’t know what to do. I never like giving sedatives to my pets but it’s to the point this poor baby needs to be OUT so I can get these mats off her stomach. She’s a sweetheart but she doesn’t want you ever touching her stomach. Ugh!!

There are professional cat groomers everywhere. You may need to take her there to be shaved. Whatever u do don't try to shave urself especially the stomach area!! U will most likely clip her!! Another thing u could try is have another person either hold her on her side or even standing up with belly exposed...good luck!!!!

That's were my cat gets matted. She's long haired and now 19, she's never groomed herself that well, but now she's even worse. I try to brush her a little every day, but sometimes I can't get to it and then it seems to become quite scary, but this video has really given me great direction.

My 15 year old cat got severely matted. I did everything exactly as recommended in this video, and it worked amazing! It's like he's a new cat. Took about an hour with my 5 year old keeping him calm and distracted, and about a third of a jar if oil.

I also use scissors with blunt tips, open and use one side to slice vertically through the mat, starting near the ends of the fur, working down to the skin. It works really good. It cuts through the dead hair making it so much easier to brush the mats out.

This makes brushing out mats look way easier than they really are lol! My 15 year old girl doesn’t like being brushed at all, and although she’s as polite as can be, she absolutely hates having her back end touched (which is where most of the mats are). Usually after brushing out her mats, I come out with quite a few bites and a really annoyed cat, but at least I have enough hair to make a new cat lol

I have 10 cats, over the years they've all learned to enjoy being brushed/combed. Half are old (over 16) and it's become painful for them when I brush around their back ends, probably arthritis. I buy cheap blunt-nosed childrens scissors (Dollar Store) to cut out those tangles. Occasionally I have to hold their necks 'scruffed' (left hand) to hold them in place and not bite me.

Which is why U need to get a bottle of CBD! Turns a hyper crazy hundred pound dog that won’t stop barking into a lazy, sleepy bag of fur ....so you can imagine what it does to a cat. It’s a lifesaver and is great pain relief for animals w arthritis as well.
My friends vet suggested putting down her large size hound who couldn’t make it up the stairs with his arthritis or go for walks anymore ...after using CBD it’s like he is two years old again - and a completely new animal now that he’s not in pain.

Most people don't know this, but black tar heroin is very unhealthy for cats and should only be applied once or twice an hour via needle to completely sedate the cat for extended periods, something we call a "heavy overdose" in the biz.

My cat (13 year old moggie female called Paloma; she's very sweet and gentle) has become extremely matted recently. She used to have the softest and most luxurious coat. I had her checked by a vet (on two occasions to be 100% sure there is no medical reason) who both said bluntly "she's lazy" and that it is common in elderly cats. I have been taking time every day to just gently brush her. She has come to like the experience and sometimes when she comes to me she gets excited and chirps at me as I hold the brush. Many years ago when I rescued her (along with her brother Perry who sadly was killed; Paloma would pine for him for months because they were literally twins and were ALWAYS together) she would hate being brushed and would run to hide. It seems she realises that she is matted and now realises the brushing is a nice experience and something to enjoy. These tips are extremely helpful so thank you for the video.

All I had was vegetable oil so on the root of the bad mats I applied the oil every day and also gently combed and brushed him and cut what I could whatever wasn't close to the skin and amazingly the mats began to fall out beginning with the smaller ones. The last big one on his back took about 2 weeks but it finally came out out pain free!! I'm so relieved! Now he lets me comb him (stainless steel) and then I use a small slicker brush and then he gets his push up treat! I don't feel like a horrible cat mom anymore! Thank you for sharing this! @monicaswavel6074 vegetable oil isn't great for cats, but olive oil is. In fact, I watched a video where this girl said mats that are hard balls rub olive oil in, and in about 3-5 days, they fell off. Just a fyi, I learned.

We use a combination of cutting out the worst of the matted pieces and combing the areas with a Furminator (one person holds her while the other does the work!). We just do it a little at a time, every day, until the mats are cleared. She gets lavishly rewarded with Dreamies throughout the process!

My Norwegian Forest cat hates coconut oil. He doesn’t groom much at all due to dental issues and I have started using olive oil and massaging it deep into his skin. Because his hair is soooo long and his undercoat gets so matted quickly, I find snipping (a time or 2) the difficult knots with scissors held at almost 90° makes a huge difference. I wait a couple hours after brushing, and then take a warm, damp washcloth and lightly clean the excess and brush one last time to make sure the oils left are distributed.

Your advice about coconut oil and treats of some type helped me release a big, painful mat from my long haired cat's fur on her neck. I didn't have anything for sedation which would have helped because she struggled. She responded well enough to being scruffed that I was able to use some pet grooming clippers to slowly and carefully get between the hair and skin. My precious furbaby Spades is a longhair and I absolutely hated getting her unmatted the first time I tried (last year), so finding this video has given me a better insight... The first time I tried, I accidrntally knicked her on her neck - in which I stopped and put a bandage around her nack for about 2 weeks to make sure the knick healed all the way (changed the bandage every few days.
But with this video, I will feel with some knowledge and some helpful tips on unmatting her. I hated hurting her.

Thank you so much for posting this, and for sharing non-pharmacutical, easily obtained products to help in the process. There are so many videos about dogs, but very few for cats. I discovered my old man cat, whom I though had just a few mats around his collar, is actually COVERED in mats with massively impacted fur :-( We've been working daily on trying to cut them out, but its so stressful for him. I'm looking forward to trying the CBD and coconut oil (and I ordered a new brush), and see if we can avoid having to get him shaved.

I didn’t try to chemically calm my cat first before removing some of her matts. But I found that using a cone around her neck helped to protect me from potential bites during her bath and de-matting session. Talking gently to her as I dried her and brushed her kept my cat a little calmer. Holding the matts near the roots and close to her skin while I comb through small sections seemed less uncomfortable or painful for my cat. I massaged her with a bit of mineral oil. It works great for detangling the fur for less hair loss or need for snatching it out,...OUTCH 😿!! But I also like your idea of the Coconut Oil for her fur and skin. I would like to try using an electric shaver next time to make the de-matting process faster and more efficient. Doctor can you please demonstrate this in a future video? Thanks for sharing.🙏

This is much too rough, and Murray is being a super good sport about it! For rescues that have been abandoned - even pets that have been long neglected, nothing short of sedation would keep one from taking a chunk out of the human pulling at their paper-thin skin like that. Murray is lucky he only had a few little mats on his back, but you are luckier. You can NOT use this method for a severely matted cat unless you have a death wish. There are tools and products that *help*, but nothing but gentle patience and time (in short sessions) will do, short of shaving by a cat groomer who has experience. Precisely why I won't leave one with a vet for grooming!

I was uncomfortable watching how hard he was pulling, and Murray even showed him that it was hurting him. I've read a lot of reviews for grooming combs (some with sharp blades) on Amazon and many owners were upset because they said the fur wasn't being cut but was being pulled directly out of the skin. I have read though that it can be done slowly and carefully to avoid pulling and tearing. I wish this vet would've done that.

Shaving would be more humane, but if you are having to figure out the clippers.... PLEASE watch a couple of videos from pro cat groomers before you try doing it yourself. A cat's skin is almost paper-like underneath all that fur, and if fur is matted all the way to the skin, you can very easily cut right into it without some tips and techniques to avoid it. Stay calm, don't rush - and if possible, get a second set of hands to help (preferably belonging to someone your cat is comfortable with!) if you don't want both you and cat to be traumatized by your first effort.
