  • In the TV show Scorpion, there is a scene where Walter O'Brien, the leader of the team of brilliant misfits, tells Paige Dineen that her son Ralph is a genius. Walter, who has an IQ of 197, is known for his ability to recognize and cultivate extraordinary talent in others, and when he sees Ralph's remarkable abilities in mathematics and problem-solving, he realizes that the boy is a prodigy. Despite Ralph's struggles with social interaction and communication, Walter believes that he has the potential to change the world with his intellect. As a result, he invites Ralph to join the Scorpion team and use his skills to help them tackle complex and dangerous missions. This moment is a turning point for Paige and Ralph, as they come to see that Ralph's differences are actually his strengths, and that he can use his intelligence to make a difference in the world. It is a touching moment that highlights the importance of recognizing and nurturing the unique abilities of individuals, especially those who may not fit into traditional molds or expectations.

I love how excited the chess master is that he got beat in eight moves by a kid. No ego just genuine joy that this kid could play so amazingly well. I know it's just a show but I like the feeling it conveys.

The shortest game ever registered between two grand masters, was in four moves. Lazard defeated Gibaud in a chess cafè in Paris in 1924.
Viswanathan Anand, who resigned on move 6 against Alonso Zapata in 1988. just a quick google search there were other examples as well. the shortest was in two moves called the fools mate. not done by a master but interesting none the less.

The two things that killed this show was falling into the "we have a ridiculously small amount of time to prevent a catastrophe that only we can prevent" trope too many times, and focusing too much on the Walter+Paige relationship drama at the cost of the lighthearted fun of the first few episodes. With slightly better writing, and more consistent writing, they could have gotten a few more seasons out of the show.

"I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your son is a genius" it's honestly sad that this quote is quite realistic, geniuses have a hard time being social, and despite their great talents, there's not a great amount of opportunities of work that can exploit that talent, and end up taking jobs where they end up wasting their knowledge. And if you tell me about X or Y, those people are mostly individuals who had resources, or were given the chance because they called the attention of someone with those resources, like in this show. And no, a tragic backstory isn't gonna score you the big chance, cause there are other 5 people with a tragic backstory as well.

This scene is so well played, it had me hooked. The first “upload” to the jet-in-flight scenario was supposedly based on something that really happened. So that was fun. Then it quickly became an endless series of sameness: a room full of outcast MacGyvers saving LA or the world from being blown up with just seconds to spare. You can only reset the same plot-line so many times. I wonder if it would have been better as a movie.

It's because people demand that stakes be raised. No one is ever happy going from a city wide threat to a block wide threat. "The stakes were higher last episode, why should i care". The American viewer base is honestly more to blame for how bad the current state of entertainment is than Hollywood, and with how much of a cesspit Hollywood is that's saying something.

I feel like this needs to be clarified:
The kid didn't win the game after playing eight moves.
They must have played way more than eight moves, but the grandmaster sees there will be a forced checkmate only eight moves away from the current position of the game.
Professional chess players don't continue playing a game until the very end. As soon as the player who's about to lose recognizes there would be a guaranteed checkmate without a finite amount of moves (if they kept playing), they resign and the game is over.

Your clothing tells me you’re wearing clothes. I would wager that we’re inside of a building given the walls and ceiling. And, according to your name tag, I’d say your name is Wendy. I think I know what you mean by using quotes here, it bothers me too...why is it that every genius portrayed on tv or in movies seem to be autistic. sure many people who are autistic are genius, but not every genius has autism. not every genius struggles to communicate with public, they just find it so painfully tedious to explain the meaning of the statements they make in a conversation, where more that 50% of whats said by the genius is explaining what they just said. so instead of going through that pain they just stay silent and observe, with only responding to questions in the simplest terms possible to them and nothing more. anyways have I got it right as to why you used quotes on that specific statement?

Except, in fact, nobody know the I.Q of Einstein and I.Q is not measurable above 175, this scene is pretty good.
And I am ready to recognize extremely high I.Q are something special and out of the world, but in admitting they are able to turn salt, pepper, sugar and other things in chess pieces,
what I can't even see how the three(Walter, his pal and the brat) would know they have "titled" the different food stuffs in the way, the fact Walter is able to keep an eye on the chess match while hacking the airport system and thinking how to solve the problem, from such a distance and know who is winning and losing, that would not even be a question of smarts, but simply of physical impossibility.
Which kind of eyes the guy has ?

So Einstein with an IQ of 160 developed the theory of relativity. Walter works for the NSA (which is impressive). Based on accomplishments that means Walter has accomplished less with more and is underperforming. That’s more of a dig on himself than to Einstein.
And a grandmaster chess player who loses in 8 moves? The shortest amount of moves it took Magnus Carlson (who many consider the greatest chess player) win was 17 moves. When you get to the highest level, grandmasters very rarely fall for those mistakes.

    Inaccurate and generalized example:
A person with a IQ of 100, one with 110 and one with 120 will be in a room.
The 100 IQ will talk to the 110 and then to the 120.
The person with an IQ of 100 will think that the person with 110 is smart. He will also either think that the person with 120 is either an asshole or dumber.
If the discrepancy of IQ in a is to large a lower IQ person will not be able to comprehend things that the higher one will think of as basic givens. If a person is unable to understand something then usually they tend to claim that their own logic that they understand is superior to what they don't understand. That's why only slightly smarter people are considered smart because they have a better logic, but one they can still comprehend. If you are to smart then people start to doubt that person, hate themselves and project those feelings against others.
I just used IQ to explain something. Usually it's much more complex than that and usually it is dependant on one of the 15? different fields where people are intelligent or not. Logic is just one of those fields.
Funnily enough the concept of Doctorate degree's more or less solved a lot of those conflicts. Because people accept an argumentum ad verecundium very easily despite that being also somewhat of a logical fallacy also.
    Humans are funny creatures.
