I maxed out everything, aside form the hardrive and the nano textured screen.
The i9 may only give you a 17% increase but if you plan on messing with 6k and 8k footage it’s going to be worth it.

Yeah considering apple went intel for this last gen mac pro it makes perfect sense a mainstream chip with 2 less cores and alot more frequency kills it.

I haven’t run any of these test but I’m happy with my setup and the performance. I opted out of the nano texture glass myself. Bought 3rd party ram and maxed it out to 128G. 5700XT graphics card, 10th gen 10 core i9 and the smaller 500gb drive. I have two 2gb Samsung x5 externals ssd’s and a couple t5 drives. My machine runs davinci like a dream.

For those interested I I have an i7 and 5700 (8gb, not the XT) and I get 89.2 fps in Unigine Heaven, Extreme presets and temperatures mostly from 60 celcius to going up to 80 celcius in the end. I did not think it was worth it (and it was outside my budget) with the 755 € upgrade to i9 and 5700XT for 7 more frames. I find it strange how all the reviews totally ignore the 5700 (non-XT) like it is not an option. I think it offers much better value than the XT, at least for gaming.

Thanks for sharing this info! I always thought that the 5700 has to be great value for the money. Would you be able to quickly run Geekbench 5 Metal and post the score? Would like to see how it compares to the 5500 XT and the top spec 5700 XT.

Constantin Mateescu Sure, I get 50758 in Geekbech Metal. No fan noice during the test. So seems to be in the middle of 5500XT and 5700XT.

Also tried Heaven again. The fans turn somewhat loud in the last scenes and second round , before that they are quiet. But even then you barely hear them with sound on. Can’t hear them at all with headphones on. Max temperature in Heaven around 85 celsuis in the end, mostly 70-80.

Thanks again, Juho! Much appreciated! I'm very close to pulling the trigger and I will definitely go for the i7 with 5700. Just concerned with the idle noise levels as some folks on MacRumors were returning their machines. But it looks like it's virtually silent based on your reports and what Max Tech has shared as well.

I’ve been waiting for weeks for this video before purchasing and even started a thread in the macrumors forums about the 10 core 5700xt benchmarks and we were all patiently waiting until now! The video dropped earlier than expected and these numbers show some interesting info. I guess the 8 core and 5700xt is where it’s in terms of performance per dollar and also heat management and money savings! Keep up the great work guys! Can’t wait to see the gaming review and see how it stacks up against my Radeon pro 580 from 2017 iMac!

ricky v Thank You! I am upgrading from my 2017 5k iMac because it’s just not powerful enough and this is most likely the last intel Mac because the transition to arm and I don’t want to be apart of that from day 1 so investing now should have be good for many years and when software is fully optimized, we can then reassess the situation but for now, this iMac is awesome.

Would love to see how this performs in Logic, with some big sample libraries... I run Superior Drummer 3, but will also have some Kontakt orchestral libraries, as well as the Spitfire BBC SO pugin library. Along with some software synths, namely Alchemy, U-He Repro One and Five. My current i7 2014 iMac with 32GB struggles with this little lot, so looking to update.
Will also be using this for 4K video so interested to see how FCP works with this.

My loaded iMac arrived last Friday and I have been using it heavily since then. I had mentioned my disappointment with the overall performance in the review of the 8-core. While it is fast - it isn’t as fast as I expected. The FCP performance is also far below my expectations - and I went all the way with 128GB ram. The system handles everything I throw at it - but it does get VERY hot - it just doesn’t get as fast as I thought it would based on the specs. I look forward to seeing how the future iMacs perform once they are off Intel. I have a feeling they are going to blow us away.

Thanks for testing the Apple machines, Max. I haven't seen anyone else go into such detail about testing Mac machines like you have. I'm glad to see Apple is doing better with cooling, though still a bit warm, and in turn, better with clock speeds. My 27" 5K Retina iMac from late 2015 runs hot as hell and doesn't clock well due to temps.
I want to get a new iMac but I'm waiting to see what Apple does with the upcoming iMac's first, which will probably be a while but I can wait a little bit. I at least want to see if they update the chassis of the new iMac's and how well the new Apple Sillicon performs in them.

What I'd really like to know is if the type of GPU has any effect on the CPU power and performance. So if there is a fixed total power budget and the 5700XT (presumably) uses more power than the 5500XT, does that effect the maximum wattage available for the CPU, and therefore the peak CPU performance (and fan noise). I wonder if that is why the i7 is using more power than the i9 in these tests, because it only has the 5500XT. I guess we won't know unless somebody gets 2 iMacs with the same CPU and different GPUs.

Just got my 8 Core i7, it's fantastic. I haven't tried it with any games because let's be honest, Apple's never been a great gaming machine but with Pixelmator Pro, and Logic Pro it's been pretty quick. I'm not even using my speakers/monitors for hookup as the iMac's built in speakers are good enough for most work and if I need it for Logic Pro I just put on the headphones which are also being used for my work phone system. Note on the memory, when I was an Apple Reseller, OWC had the best memory options and I'd go to them often for memory and hardware when clients needed it.

If the only thing you'll use that GPU for is gaming then its a better "Bang for the buck" than the 5700XT if you're trying to keep the price of your iMac low with minimal other upgrades. If you going to do other things that tax the GPU like professional apps or if you care about resale I'd spend the extra on the 16GB 5700XT. We'll talk about this in our gaming video coming tomorrow!

Would be interested to see more graphic design based testing, InDesign, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, etc. Lots of graphic designers use iMacs but most UA-camrs focus of video creation. Also, do you have benchmarks on SSD performance, one review said the 5700XT gave better drive performance but surely that is down to the drive config, with the higher capacities runner faster. I’m getting 4TB and would be keen to see how that compares to the very fast iMac Pro SSD’s. Your channel is the best BTW. Keep up the amazing work.

As mentioned everywhere, the 8-core i7 looks good in terms of performance per $. For an all-round computer doing photo & graphics work, some video and gaming, the 8-core seems good.
I have a 10-core, 5700XT on order, but can still change it to 8-core. I won't though. Doing most of my heavier lifting in Resolve and Blender I'm going for absolute performance, even if it's diminishing returns in the end. I'll be using all 10 cores for extended periods daily.
I also see the memory you recommend are CL19. That's on the slower side among 2666MHz. I'd look for CL16-18-18. Admittedly a small detail, but that's how we roll.

Maybe the wrong video to put this but I’ve enjoyed most every video you’ve posted. Much good info.
And I know you’re busy but on your recommendation of the Radeon 5700xt I went and replaced my eGPU Radeon VII with one. Ran some benchmarks which encouraged me that this card would better enable my 2019 iMac to playback HD and 4K video files from the QNAP NAS connected with 10g. And man is that the way to edit videos! The NAS is perfect for speed. So anyway... without a long story I opened Premiere Pro today to check the playback of an HD/4K project I just finished. With the Radeon VII I would have many dropped frames even at 1/4 playback resolution. The 5700XT has greatly improved that situation in that I can play the project at 1/2 and better yet, 1/4 playback resolution without continuous dropped frames. Most now occur at transitions which is fine. I’m just kinda befuddled that with all this high powered hardware it’s still an issue playing 4K content (shot with a Sony FDR AX100).
I did loads of videos back in the day of DV running through a 2013 MacPro and Matrox MX02 and never had the issues I’m running into now that I’m getting back into the biz and climbing the learning curve.
So I guess all this is just to say thank you for your channel and educational info. Maybe a video on the reasons behind ‘X’ hardwares Challenges in playing content smoothly from the timeline?
I’m considering moving to Final Cut but have been an Adobe user since forever!

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  4 роки тому +1

We usually don't recommend eGPUs for high-end Macs, especially iMacs, because they have decently powerful graphics already.
The issue is that the data has to travel back and forth from the Mac to the eGPU, and then back to the Mac to show everything on the display. This causes major inefficiencies and slowdowns compared to simply using the built-in dedicated graphics, especially for playback frame rate.
It really only makes sense to get eGPUs for Macs without dedicated graphics cards, or maybe for Macs that have very weak dedicated graphics.
I would suggest running some tests with and without the eGPU connected and compare.
There were many times where a 15" or 16" MacBook Pro performed better by itself compared to actually having an eGPU connected.
There are a couple of ways you can be sure that it's running.
First go into the Premiere Pro settings and make sure it's set to use the eGPU.
Then go into the applications folder, click get info and check the box that says Prefer eGPU
Then I would download iStat Menus 6 and see if it's actually using the eGPU. -Vadim

@@MaxTechOfficial Thanks for the reply! I guess I didn’t mention my whole setup. I’m using the iMac as a secondary display and a 32” 4K monitor for my primary display to gain real estate for Premiere Pro. The 32” is connected to the eGPU. Additionally I have a 27” monitor connected through the HDMI out of the eGPU and then through a receiver for sound and then to the 27”. My intent was surround sound editing and playback monitoring. Originally the HDMI out of my MacPro was connected to a 43” 4K tv so I could have surround and real world feedback for Premiere playback to check projects. This worked great under HD when I was on a 2013 MacPro but through Adobe’s and Apple’s dropping support for certain formats and Adobe removing Dolby digital surround support parts of my setup broke. And the 43” 4K tv would not work when connected to the eGPU. I think this had something to do with HDMI version and/or port version!?? I felt I could update to a newer editing setup that would operate the same way as the HD setup only with 4K. And then convert the archive footage I have to a more playable/editable format. Surround sound would have to wait until I understood what exactly was happening. The eGPU came in when I realized the MacPro wasn’t handling the 3 4K monitors I was trying to use. Then the MacPro became suspect as hardware issues with RAM crept in. So I traded up (unfortunately right before Apples release of the 2020 iMac 😢)
So with this setup PP is shown in Activity Monitor as using the eGPU on program playback and rendering (with PP or media encoder). Since you probably know now I have more money than brains I also hooked the iMac up with 128 gig RAM and have one T3 connector hooked to a RAID farm with a large amount of Tb storage (mostly archival now since the NAS has proven a much better video server), and an OWC external breakout box providing the 10g through the same T3 connection. The other T3 runs only to the eGPU.
Knowing my configuration if you have any mother suggestions I’d be glad to try! I’ll investigate your above suggestions and run some more tests. Thank you!

    • @VmanJeff

A little additional info..... After playing around with PP this morning I can tell you this....
I open PP on the 32" monitor and, as stated above, that monitor is connected to the eGPU/Radeon 5700XT combo. When I click "prefer external GPU" in Info, then start PP, it actually uses the iMac Vega 48 GPU! When I deselect the "prefer external GPU" AND reboot, PP uses the eGPU again. Seems odd. But I guess since PP is running on the 32" monitor and I read somewhere PP needs to be run on the monitor using the eGPU to actually use it, then the info panel selection sees the Vega 48 as the external. Maybe?? IDK...
When I disable Mercury transport and/or uncheck the external 27" monitor connected to the eGPU HDMI out, playback can be monitored in the PP interface program monitor pane at full resolution with occasional dropped frames on transitions.
If Mercury Transport is enabled and the 27" monitor is checked, I can playback to the 27" monitor at 1/2 resolution with very few dropped frames. Again, mostly on transitions. This is mostly acceptable to me for my needs since 1/2 resolution is still pretty good resolution for monitoring from within PP.
I even tried deselecting the 27" monitor output in PP preferences and moving the PP monitor pane to the 27" monitor with OK results. Somewhat like having the 27" enabled in pref's.
I did not try moving the PP interface to the iMac to use the Vega 48 GPU as when the iMac Vega 48 was being used through the selection of "prefer external GPU" in info, playback was worse than either the eGPU/Radeon VII or the eGPU/Radeon 5700XT.

Thank you for continuing to provide us with quality content and analysis.
    Very much appreciated.
When you say the 10-core iMac wasn't pushed, does it mean that Apple purposedly throttled down the performance?
The iMac may not have thermal throttled but Apple might have built-in the throttling.
What was your projected CPU performance output?
I was thinking maybe the 10-core iMac reached a 17-18% improvement from the 8-core which is actually close to a 20% improvement of a 8/10 core comparison not the 25% that what was projected?
