Fast forward to now, 2022. The 2021 hasn't changed much, but there are few reasons why to grab this iMac before they stop the Intel and go with I assume will be the M2 iMac this year. 1)Intel base programs that must be run in Windows. 2)Expandable Ram and 3)Black Bezel . If you're like me and Windows Remote Desktop is a bit slow for your use so you need to use Bootcamp. Rush to get this one. If you can run everything on Apple, you may want to wait but keep in mind that this will be the last time you'll be able to upgrade the memory for a heck of a lot cheaper than what Apple is offering. It's rumored that they will be running a white bezel on the new iMac 27 units :-(.
The matte display looks gorgeous, but I'm not sure whether it's great for people like myself who work with text on a daily basis. My old iMac-Mid 2011, 21.5 inches, just died this week, 10 years later. The only upgrade was to get SSD 2gb. That screen was highly reflective, but I fix that problem fast, my red background was not lit, so, dark; then there was no light on my face at all. All this was cheap without any problem to make correction on zillions of photos! 😉 Now I will by a new 27 inches without any problem on the mirror screen! 😁
Just came across this UA-cam video. Nicely summarised. Good that you demonstrated the difference between the 2 screens. Going the matte finish certainly makes a difference, I’m definitely going to spend the extra to upgrade. Thanks for showing us your observations and sharing your thoughts 😊
Apple iMac simply ROCKs ... The thing is that I will keep my 2016 iMac 27" and yes, most probably buy another iMac 27" rather soon as once the Apple processors come in play on iMac's most probably you will not be able to upgrade your ram via 3rd party products as is the case at the moment.

This is a very nice video and, I enjoyed hearing your reflections. It was also great to be able view and compare both your older and newer iMac's side-by-side. As for myself, I look at things differently. For me it would depend on how much, I love the current design or if I would really prefer to own a newer more modern designed iMac system. When buying my iPad preferred the older 9.7 inch size so, I picked up one a few months before apple changed the design. Also, I think the iMac Pro will be one of the first computers redesigned with the new apple processor.
I already brought on 7th of October 2020 ... but, I am completely happy with speed . But, when you data access external hard drive it has huge lag for performance... rest all is great ...
Quick question: when exporting a 4K H.264 video (through Media Encoder), can you still continue to edit in Premiere without any struggles/lags? If yes, just barely or easy-peasy? 🤔 Thinking about getting an iMac 2020 and an answer would help a lot with my decision. 😊

What are your thoughts on Apple doing away with the RAM door on the back so consumers can upgrade the RAM after sales and at a fraction of the cost that Apple charges? If there’s a strong possibility they will then that in itself is a great reason to upgrade to this iMac right now.
I love matte screens but the best PQ is on glossy screens in completely dark rooms. I think I'd rather treat my room to minimize glare and light rather than spend on nano coating
Man, I am so on the fence. I’m still running a mid 2009 MBP 13”. It’s been a really great machine but it’s just getting passed by. I’ve recently gotten into drone photography and videography and I’m still doing music production, albeit on an old version of Logic Pro. I can’t upgrade the OS any further and I’m stuck running older versions of software because of it. That’s part of my problem is that I need a machine that can handle photo, video and music production and unfortunately in the Apple ecosystem that runs at a premium.
Are you using your lappy with a big screen? Having used a ton of Macs over many years I’d say the biggest productivity jump is screen real-estate. I have a 5yr old imac 27 and last years 13 MacBook Pro. The iMac is where ALL the real work gets done, the laptop is capable sure, but it’s a handy, luxury “accessory” when I need it, I rarely use it for much real work. For a designer, photographer, videographer, you want screen!
Bruce Kennedy no. The screen size never really bothered me. It was one of the concessions I made and I got used to working with it and I’m able to do so efficiently enough. Honestly, I’m not sure what in the world I’d do with so much screen real estate at my disposal.
Bruce Kennedy tell me about it. I’ve actually gotten pretty decent just using iMovie on my phone. I used it sparingly on my old MBP with fair results. I’m seeing that it’s actually not a bad little editing program considering that it’s free, well, included software from Apple that is.
@@LPCliftonMusic iMovie is great. I use FCPX, but you can do plenty with iMovie. The irony is, your phone may well be faster for some tasks than your laptop! If you like editing on the go, on an iPhone or iPad, it's worth checking out Luma Fusion - it's really powerful and easy to use.
Internal vs external SSD - is there any functional downside from having a combination of small internal SSD with a large external SSD compared to getting the largest internal SSD you can afford? Aside from the obvious cost and cosmetic differences. Thanks, nice review.
Tyler Stalman Tyler Stalman I think I’ve finally found a way to fully make my iPad work to be my portable driver, and I’d like to have that expandable RAM with the iMac, so better and faster will enforce the decision!

Hi, I’ve just purchased to 27” iMac last week, installed an extra 32GB RAM but find the fan constantly spinning!! And that happens when I’m running 4 to 5 safari tabs... surely this is not right?!? I haven’t tried Logic Pro yet but this would be a nightmare! I have the MacBook Pro and I’d need to be running heavy video editing before this happens! So far I’m really dissapointed in this machine 🙈
The Nano Texture is now only a $300 option, but it ruins the clarity of the Retina display. It gives it a 'screen door' effect and the text is not nearly as clear as the regular glass. So if you have no window behind you and no glare, it is not worth it.
Great review! Definitely going to consider the nano-texture after watching this. My late 2013 27” iMac has served me well the past 7 years, but I’m due for an upgrade. The 2020 model seems like it will be a good workhorse for the foreseeable future. :)
Hi Tyler. I’m wanting to buy an iMac 5k 2020 with the 3.8GHz 8-core i7 processor and upgraded graphics Radeon Pro 5700XT to use for video editing and also gaming via boot camp. But I’m unsure whether or not to pay extra for the 10Gb Ethernet. Even though I’m personally not going to use the 10Gb speed I’m wondering if it’s worth having for resale value in the future? What’s your thoughts?
D B I’m going with 1TB SSD and will partition windows on bootcamp with half of that (512GB) and I’m not getting the nano-texture screen as I keep reading comments that it reduces constrast and anyway the benefit of the non-glare screen is only relevant in an uncontrolled window-lit room. But that’s only my assumption.
Nigel Burrell interesting! I was considering dual booting windows and going with the 2tb option as I already have over half of my 1TB SSD on my MacBook filled (and will be restoring that computer onto this iMac.). Would Oculus Rift and other games run well in Bootcamp?? I don’t need it necessarily but I would like to have the windows option and maybe play something VR

I have a late 2013 iMac too. I have not upgraded my OS to Catalina because I still have 32 bit apps. I wish they had waited until MacOS11 to ditch 32 bit. I have an old printer and a scanner I use every now and then. I just got a 16" MBP and it killed off a lot of the software I had in there including Epson CD Print. I don't know if it killed off the drivers for it too? That is something to think about before buying a new Mac.

From what I heard about the Nano Texture on the Pro Display XDR, people have complained that text doesn't look as sharp as on the glossy version. Could you tell us if you noticed any fuzziness with really small text? I would very much appreciate your reply!
Just try it. If you press your face against it? It’s a little less sharp. From normal viewing distance, it looks the same
@@stalman That's great news, thank-you! So would you still recommend this screen for someone who is coding / editing text documents daily? I'm using dark mode on my current Macbook Pro and the glare is really obvious and distracting. One final question: is the matte texture also present on the black bezels?
I spent $50 on a Matte screen film on my 2011 iMac, it's been working fine til today. don't know if i should spent $500 for a nano screen.
Just check on out in reel life. You can’t judge it from pictures
@@stalman 500€ is ridicolous tho
Those films reduce the clarity and sharpness greatly. I had one and threw it away
@@Rockem1234 the one I'm using is pretty good.
I do graphic design and photo editing. Sadly the company I bought the film from is no longer in business.
Position your screen without reflections is a long term professional habit. Why u would ever want light behind you and try to fight it is silly. Save the money everyone.
I bought a 12core Mac Pro and I'm happy with it your computer will be obsolete anyway. buy if you need a computer. I needed one so I got it cause my old Mac was crashing whenever I use final cut and unreal engine I think it's was the power supply(anyway) if you need a Mac by one
Thank you for being so calm and informative. I'm going to buy the new iMac on saturday and Linus' overdramatization of "dead on arrival" was a bit too much and made me very anxious of even buying at all. It's true that it will last for years to come and apple might update the desktops late so if I need it now then I should buy it
Love this video so much! Thanks for the informative video.
I’m waiting to see if the 2020 iMacs have ironed out the quality issues I’ve seen in my iMacs over the last 15 years. It’s either been a bad LCD, bad power supply, or bad graphics card.
It’s pretty sad when my 35 yr old Mac Plus still turns on, and boots without issue, but my 27” iMac needs the graphics card replaced... again.
If you don't mind sharing which 27" imac is yours and what configuration? I work on fully maxed out upgraded macbook pro 16 2015 and it's always running out of scratch disk space while editing large projects using advanced editing softwares
A few months after the M1 release, would you still recommend this device?
This
In breaking news, replacement recommended microfibre cloths are now available for $99 :) Great review.
This guy for sure will upgrade to the new iMac once it launches in the October event.
I can guarantee you that the 27" iMac and the Mac Pro will be the last to be upgraded to Apple Silicon. So this is it for the next two years.
I prefer this design rather than the rumoured chinless design. I'll be ordering soon.
I prefer iMacs. Like you. Still using 2011 iMac 21 inch. And 2011 MacBook. Next purchase will be iMac. I don’t do videos or photos

Good review. Informative, sharp, and not silly. Kudos.
And ... being a beard guy ... I like your beard.
I’m trying to decide between a MacPro 16” laptop and an iMac. Last iMac I had crashed and burned and I lost a lot of data. I compose and arrange music. Cheers.
I would not buy a Mac in this frame until I see what that first apple silicon looks like. But if your machine dies or you need it for a project then that is a different thing. Of course, you may want to skip that first gen apple silicon but I still would like to see what they do with it.
I love the poverty glass on my pro display xdr. I can have the window open and still not many reflections
Very informative. Great job mate!
Please test video editing experience with footage from the Canon R5/6 (h.265 10 bit 4:2:2)
I've read the newest apple products work pretty well with the 4:2:2 format.
For me the best one to buy is the 24 inch aluminum imac
Cam looks so much better. The sound from the mic could be better but an external mic would solve that. I am picky though.
I have a 2011 MB pro that is now really struggling with logic pro. Want an iMac but just so annoying that this machine will be outdated in 12 months
Excellent demo. Getting mine tomorrow....so excited! Brigitte in Tulsa Oklahoma
Also, as a coder, do you recommend using 27" iMac for coding purposes?
I feel like bigger screen is better for coding. U see more code after all
Thanks Tyler, Would you purchase a MacBook Pro 16 right now, or wait until the the new Apple 'Silly-Con' era has commenced?
Just ordered this computer all decked out. Should I of waited? What are your thoughts??
Depends how badly you needed it now, but we are definitely closer to an update now. Personally I’m holding off for my MacBook update
Thanks for the informative and logical presentation. Probably made up my mind to upgrade my 2014 iMac with Aussie dollars.
I already brought on 7th of October 2020 ... but, I am completely happy with speed . But, when you data access external hard drive it has huge lag for performance... rest all is great ...
Thanks for the shoutout!
Thanks for all your hard work benchmarking!
Quick question: when exporting a 4K H.264 video (through Media Encoder), can you still continue to edit in Premiere without any struggles/lags? If yes, just barely or easy-peasy? 🤔
Thinking about getting an iMac 2020 and an answer would help a lot with my decision. 😊
I mostly edit in Final Cut these days, but that would be a good test. Some interesting benchmarks are starting to come out ua-cam.com/video/4Fa5yNwsK7o/v-deo.html
What are your thoughts on Apple doing away with the RAM door on the back so consumers can upgrade the RAM after sales and at a fraction of the cost that Apple charges?
If there’s a strong possibility they will then that in itself is a great reason to upgrade to this iMac right now.
The webcam looks and sounds crazy good.
I’m looking forward to 1080p webcam also.
I love matte screens but the best PQ is on glossy screens in completely dark rooms. I think I'd rather treat my room to minimize glare and light rather than spend on nano coating
Is that a true metric?
@@DB-lr6kl I meant to say PQ is better on glossy screens in darkness. That's a true fact yes
Always look forward to your reviews
What do you use and iMac for... just internet racing? Or do you actually do work on it?
Thanks for the informative video! Thinking of getting one. Quick question: is it worth it to buy Apple Care+ for these? It’ll be my first Mac. Thanks!
I like how you say, "defuse the reflection", that is where we justify the $500 more...LOL
Thanks for the info! Very detailed and helpful. Keep on doing good reviews!
I had my 2013 iMac upgraded to 1tb ssd and 16gb ram for around £200. I don’t need a new one for a few years now
Man, I am so on the fence.
L.P. Clifton hehe you get used to it - esp for Video editing.
My daughter wants the 21.5. Still runs on intel. I don't know if I should wait until the fall.
One of the dopest reviews of this iMac. Thanks!
Thank you Tyler, very informative and clear video.
Internal vs external SSD - is there any functional downside from having a combination of small internal SSD with a large external SSD compared to getting the largest internal SSD you can afford? Aside from the obvious cost and cosmetic differences.
Thanks, nice review.
Well said, overall. Considering this over the 16” MBP
If you don’t need to be portable, this will do everything better and faster
Tyler Stalman Tyler Stalman I think I’ve finally found a way to fully make my iPad work to be my portable driver, and I’d like to have that expandable RAM with the iMac, so better and faster will enforce the decision!
R MOLINA I’m doing the same! Consider the Logitech Combo Touch for your iPad!
D B Way ahead of you! I’m loving it
I think you're right about the CPU, but it is a concern...

Getting mine tomorrow, Dec. 8. 27" 10Gen 8G DDR4 with 1TB. I have a 2015 27", but after the Big Sur update, it seems to be running a little janky. I get paranoid about things like this, so I bought, what will hopefully be, the Last "Intel" desktop from Apple. Thanks for the overview. PEACE.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW? - Can you remove the stand and add an aftermarket VESA mount?
You’ve got it wrong. 2022 has a great one coming out.

Great Video, Tyler. Very helpful!
So many people out there with late 2013 iMacs 😁
2009 21" ...... it’s Time 😆
Early 2010!
I am getting the same specs! I’ve done tireless research on this and yes it is worth it - for storage use or resale value
How many GBs is your SSD, and are you getting the nano-texture screen?
How much is the quality difference between the two?
ME: I can still use my 2-year old Asus laptop for games and worksheets...so I guess, I don't have to buy one.
MY BANK ACCOUNT: Thank goodness!!
Oh I love your kitchen.
The Matte Screen ONLY makes sense if you have light coming in from back or the side. Else the Glossy Screen has so much better contrast and colors.
Look at in person, don’t judge it from video
@@stalman I own both in my Photo Studio! The Glossy Version is much better if you don't have "light issues"
Which one is more color accurate?
First time asking this, since I don't have this fancy stuff, but does this iMac is a nice combo with the new Mac mini? Since the new Mac mini will be using the M1 chip, the Apple Silicon.
I like I-Mac's do you get the Apple-programms included and can you install them, my former social workplace had one standing at the workplace. Kind regards.
That screen is amazing! So you can upgrade your own RAM and not have to use apple’s crazy priced sets?
You sure can! One of the great features of the iMac, easy home upgrades
Tyler Stalman nice...thanks!
@@stalman Easy Ram yes, SSD is more complex and chance to destroy the computer.
@@r3n736 SSD the only way to go!
I wouldn't buy any Apple RAM. Get it from Amazon. That faster network connection may come in handy down the road.
My color profiling software runs on 32 bit. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see some ARM based iMacs a year from now.
For the price id sure like for it to last. Are macs worth it for a 8 year or more ownership?
My current iMac is from 2013 so it will be turning 8 soon
Ah loving it I'm currently using 2017 imac and it's great but looking to upgrade once the imacs get the m1 chip or higher upgrade
