5 Common Discernment Traps and How to Avoid Them (feat. Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P.)

  • Fr. Mark-Mary and Fr. Gregory Pine reveal five discernment traps we can fall into, and how to avoid them.
The five common vocational discernment traps we tend to fall into are catastrophism, angelism, sensationalism, objectivism, and vocationism (names courtesy of Fr. Gregory).
How do we avoid them? By recognizing these things:
    1) The Lord loves your vocation more than you do, and is constantly working toward this goal. All we have to do is respond generously to him.
    2) Humans were created to know our vocation step-by-step, not all at once. God is working slowly in our lives, and patience is essential in following his plan.
    3) God works in ordinary ways, and just because they’re ordinary doesn’t mean they’re not marvelous.
    4) The Lord loves you in a specific, particular way, and he’s going to encourage you towards a vocation that corresponds to your desires and who you are.
    5) Your life doesn’t start when your vocation does. Your broader vocation is to glorify God and to strive towards heaven. It’s your specific vocation that shows how you’ll play your own unique part in God’s divine plan.
By breaking out of these limitations, we can draw our hearts and minds closer to Christ, which will only lead to greater discernment of his plan.

Was denied the priesthood due to anxiety, they let me in the Oblatehood but I left due to reasons I thought I wasn’t ready. sought other communities and had the door slammed in my face before I had the chance to even have a come and see. Some time passed and I re discerned the oblatehood but no one ever returned my letters from the vocations office. My local ICKSP community I was stationed at and I are still very much close, they’re my second family. I’ll always love them.
But I’ve since abandoned discernment all together forever, as it’s destroyed my mental health, left me in severe depression and I’m picking up the pieces.

I was 16 and was sitting in a conference. I was in my junior year and had plans to join the Air Force. My mom looked at me and wen “Have you considered becoming a nun?” I just stared at her. I had when I was really little wanted to be a sister for a little while, but for the most part that had not entered my mind. I was angry and flat out refused to entertain that thought. That night I looked into religious orders and fell in love. So now I am looking into contemplative orders and am super exited. Also so incredibly blessed to even be considered to be Christ’s bride.

I need advice. I’m 24. I’m currently in my last semester as a college student after six long years. Anyways, I’m confident that I’ve been called to become a priest. I talked to my mom about it, since she’s the only one that raised me. She raised me in the Catholic faith. I was baptized, did my First Communion, and Confirmation. She thinks it’s all in my head, and I get tired of hearing that. Honestly, I think I’m going to be stuck in the middle once I graduate from college and end up doing something that I hate. If I were to become a priest, I feel as if I’ll be happy in my life.

If you truly believe God is calling you to be a priest than you should speak to the director of vocations in your dioceses. It’s good to speak to your mom but if she’s not listening, you need to explore this further with those that can help you truly discern God’s call. I promise prayers for you.

God is probably not speaking to your mother about whether or not you should become a priest. He’s rather going to speak to you more or less directly, as God does not need your mother’s permission to call you to the priesthood. Talk to a vocational director, talk to God, and generally try to see if this life is for you.

I believe God's plan is also meant to be not just for you, but through you for many as well, like Bishop Barron's recent remarks about graces of God not to be contained within us for ourselves but to be shared and propagated to many, as reflected in the feeding of the thousands of people from a few pieces of bread and fish by Jesus.
My point is, God's plan is both unique to each person but at the same time universal in its purpose, to bring good and holiness not just to select people but for many; and so, sometimes, God's plan for you can be disrupted if another person does not want to cooperate with God, like Jonah who initially refused to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh, not until Jonah was changed and did his job, that Nineveh was saved.
So, I believe we have to be patient and trust God fully, when some people reject us or turn us away, it is not like that is not God's will or God has abandoned us, it can be because God actually has a plan for you with that person or those people, but they do not want to cooperate with God in their actions and so as a result you are rejected or forced to find a new way, or to wait. And so, as I am still learning and growing in faith as well, trust God that He will find a new way for you and that His will be done in the end if you hold on to His path and will.

A broken engagement is tough stuff. Prayer for you today, I've been there. I got married at 47. A bit late perhaps but it's been a Grace.

That's either a start to a joke or something like what you'll see in this video.

So really weird question. Just wondering if something is a sin or not. So if you are not allowed to have a phone in your backpack at school, you are o oh allowed to have it in your locker. If one forgets to put it in their locker and notices they didn’t right before class started, and does not put it away because that had no time. A phone rings and they think it is theirs so when the teachers ask they admit they forgot to put it away and go and put it away, but as they are leaving they notice it was not their phone ringing but someone else’s and the teacher did not catch that person. If they approach that person after class and the person apologizes for having their phone, explains that they forgot. Would it be a sin of the person who put their phone away did not tell the teacher someone else had a phone on them?

It’s not a sin because the person didn’t lie. It would only be a sin to withhold information if it’s a grave matter
